Dan and Dennis Dennis Hill, co-founder of Langhart & Hill Wines joins Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger on California Wine Country today. The last time he was on California Wine Country was this episode in September of 2023. The first tasting is a 2023 Chardonnay. While a lot of California Chards are the heavy oaky buttery ML style, this is different. It is more in the European style, higher acidity and better for pairing with food. They use high quality grapes from Sonoma County so there are a lot of fruit flavors in it. Dennis Hill and his wife were both raised in Healdsburg. There was a Renaissance in the wine industry in the 1970s when he was starting in the business – right place, right time. Healdsburg is located at the confluence of the Dry Creek River and the Russian River. That puts it at the intersection of three main viticultural areas, Dry Creek, Anderson Valley and Russian River Valley. In the northern part of this region the afternoons are hotter and in the southern part, it is cooler and foggier. Where to find Langhart & Hill wines Langhart & Hill wines are available in restaurants and some retail locations. They do not have a tasting room. Their production is still rather small for that. After working for some very large wineries with complicated operations and relationships, Dennis enjoys being able to work by himself. Their vineyards are located in the different climate zones described, so there is a four-week window for them to harvest everything. Dennis describes their two brands. Landhart & Hill are classic Sonoma County varieties, a Chard, two Pinot Noirs, a Rosé and a Merlot. They also have another label, Rumplestiltskin, which is for the less common varieties. For instance, today there is a Dobricic, a Croation variety, and an Orange wine, made of Trouseau Gris grapes originally from the Jura region in France. Trousseau is a Gris variety, not purely a white grape. Wine grapes come in three colors, black, aka red, white and gris, meaning gray. There is also Trousseau Noir. It's a tricky grape to use. You have to harvest not too soon or too late. Then, if you want Orange wine, you have to leave it on the skins just long enough.

If you lived in New Orleans between 1953 and 2021, you might remember Baker Maid Fruitcake. It was made here, and in its earlier years was hugely popular. But tastes change. Somewhere along the line fruitcake became relegated mostly to the holidays.  In 2009, when Greg Sorensen took over his family business as its 4th generation co-owner, he reasoned if they're going to make cakes for special occasions, why make a cake people eat once a year? Every day is someone's birthday. Why not make birthday cake? That simple decision – along with a few others that pivoted the bakery toward other everyday items – has transformed Baker Maid. Today they're a wholesale business that supplies layer cakes, cupcakes, and petit fours to grocery stores across most of the eastern half of the US. The company has a staff of 70 here in New Orleans churning out cakes. On a typical workday, 20-30 of those folks are cake decorators. Here's another great New Orleans story. Luka Cutura grew up on the Northshore. His dad was a Croation immigrant who went into oyster farming, and following in his father's shrimp-boot footsteps Luka got his commercial captain's boat license right out of high school. That meant he was licensed to carry passengers. Luka started doing swamp tours  for a company called Cajun Encounters. Now, Cajun Encounters is owned by Jeff Rogers. In 2016 Jeff and his wife Mary Anna decided to open a distillery and call it Seven Three Distilling, after the 73 neighborhoods of New Orleans. One of Jeff's boat captains, Luka, had spent his childhood summers in Croatia where he'd learned to brew his Croatian family's traditional Balkans fruit brandy and wine. With a few courses at the American Distilling Institute to get up to professional speed, Luka hung up his boat captain's hat and became the Head Distiller at Seven Three Distilling. Today, under Luka's leadership, Seven Three Distilling makes award-winning gin, vodka, rum, and a bourbon that's so popular they literally can't keep up with demand. When politicians, economists and pundits are fond of telling us, “The key to growing the national economy is manufacturing.” they're typically thinking of things like aircraft, automobiles, steel, electronics, and clothing. But because this is New Orleans, we do things differently. We're manufacturing birthday cakes and bourbon. Baker Maid Products and Seven Three Distilling company names might not make it into national politicians' speeches or onto economists' charts, but their contributions to the local economy are not insignificant. Could we finally have a crack at the Premiership? Signing strikers Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Eidur Gudjohnsen and Croation midfielder Mario Stanic and victory over Man Utd in the Charity Shield and beating West Ham 4:2 in the first Premiership match with Stanic scoring a goal of the season contender, augered well. But five matches later, popular (with the fans anyway) manager Gianluca Vialli was sacked and replaced by Claudio Ranieri, with rumours of players plotting behind the scenes to get Vialli out.Ranieri's reign started with the brilliant 3:3 draw against Man Utd at Old Trafford with Hasselbaink's exocet strike the stand out, but Di Matteo breaking his leg in the 1st round UEFA Cup defeat to St Gallen and the Worthington Cup defeat to Liverpool meant that by November Chelsea were out of two cup competitions and had only recovered from 16th position in the league to 10th. November was a horrendous month with the team struggling with adapting to Ranieri's tactics and rotation, as well as injuries to key midfield players. Of the 5 matches played Chelsea lost 4 and drew 1. For all intent and purpose, the league campaign was over before it began, but could Chelsea still challenge for the european places?The only bright spots in the season so far had been the superb goal scoring form of Hasselbaink and Gudjohnsen and the emergence of midfielder Sam Dalla Bonna and a certain young John Terry. Richard Young (born December 17, 1955) is an American actor, independent filmmaker, screenwriter, photographer and artist. Active from the early 1970s, he gained prominence starring in the opening sequence of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989). Other feature films appearances include: The Ice Pirates (1984), Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (1985) and An Innocent Man (1989).In the 1990's, Young had a position as a cameraman for a documentary of a woman who came into the U.S. for a new life after the Bosnian War. During the time of the filming, the crew found out that her family went missing in Croatia. It was when then at the time Young, the crew and the woman went into the war zone looking for the last surviving members of the family. After the shooting was completed, Young stayed behind in Croatia. The war had a profound effect on him and, after his return to the US, he chose to follow his love of photography, and is now working on detailing his Croation experience in either a screenplay or an autobiography.As of 2018, Young has been living in Seattle, Washington in the Pacific Northwest, and owns the Silverwing Images where he does fine art photography. Meet "Fedora": Actor Richard Young!

If you ve never heard of them and there s a good chance you haven t yet you ll be surprised these Slidell guys are as awesome as they are. We re all going to be hearing a lot more about them in the probably not too distant future. If we re lucky we ll also get to hear the new Andrew Duhon album in the not too distant future. Andrew is in the process of writing songs for it and tries out another new one on this show, called Go It Alone. If you listen to Andrew putting these songs together each week you re starting to get a feel of what a songwriter goes through assembling material he s happy enough to record for posterity.
