Today's conversation is one of my favorite in recent memory. I have the privilege of speaking with 26-year-old track and field star Gabbi Jennings. Gabbi is from Slidell, Louisiana, where she attended First Baptist Christian School. Gabbi notched 44 state titles in Track and Cross Country during her time there. Yes, you read that right. FORTY FOUR. Gabbi then competed at Furman University and was a three-time All-American. During her time at Furman she had PRs of 2:04.66 in the 800m; 4:12.60 in the 1500m; 4:37.46 in the Mile; 15:33.59 in the 5k in track; and 16:55.1 in the 5k in Cross Country. Among her notable achievements in college include qualifying for the NCAA East Preliminaries in an unprecedented four events (800m, 1500m, 5k, 3k Steeplechase). Gabbi came in 20th at the 2019 NCAA Cross Country Championships and qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track Championships in the Mile. She graduated with a degree in Communication in 2020. Gabbi would go on to sign a professional contract with Team Boss and eventually Adidas. In 2022, at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, she came in 4th in the Steeplechase, running a new PR of 9:25.05. She also represented the United States in 2022 at the NACAC Championships winning the gold in the Steeplechase. Most recently, she ran a 9:07.70 in August at a Diamond League event in Rome. In today's conversation, Gabbi and I dive deep into her backstory, how she won 44 state-titles, what winning her first one as a 5th grader meant, her years at Furman and how they shaped her, how she's striving for more in this next stage of her professional career, learning under Emma Coburn, her thoughts and ambitions for the future, and much more. This one was fun, deep, full of wisdom, all the things that make a great podcast. Lace-up your shoes, throw in the AirPods, and be blessed by the stories and wisdom of Gabbi Jennings. Tap into the Gabbi Jennings Special. If you enjoy the podcast, please consider following us on Spotify and Apple Podcasts and giving us a five-star review! It's been a long, hot summer, but fall has finally arrived in Louisiana! As temperatures and humidity go down, the Bayou State comes alive with a colorful array of autumn events and festivals. On this week's show, we enjoy a taste of fall. We begin on the Northshore, where the annual Abita Fall Fest is about to kick off, bringing national acts and local artists to the quaint town of Abita Springs. We meet festival co-founder Anthony Essaied at his restaurant and bar, Abita Brew Pub, to learn about the charming town he calls home. The arrival of October also means Oktoberfest. Chef Horst Pfiffer joins us to talk about the authentic German-style fun on tap at both Middendorf's Restaurants in Manchec and Slidell. Bavarian brews aside, there's perhaps no drink that better complements the joys of fall than a crisp hard cider. At Kingfish Cider in Jefferson Parish, Colleen Keogh is crafting and serving this bubbly alcoholic drink all year-round. Colleen gives us a tour of her cidery and taproom and explains why cider makes a refreshing alternative to traditional options. It was supposed to be this weekend, but, well, rain
Two tornadoes touched down in the city of Slidell, north of New Orleans, earlier this month. The severe weather damaged hundreds of buildings in the area. Thankfully, nobody was killed. But recovery efforts are expected to be ongoing for the next several months. Gov. Jeff Landry issued an emergency declaration after visiting the area last week. Greg Cromer, Slidel's mayor, joins the show to share more on the city's ongoing recovery efforts. Louisiana loses teachers every year. Some go to neighboring states. While others leave teaching completely. And a big part of the problem is pay. Teachers in Louisiana make about $13,000 less a year than the national average. And regionally, they still make several thousand dollars less. All week, we're hearing from public school teachers. Aubri Juhasz, WWNO/WRKF education reporter, interviewed several teachers about the difficult decisions they're faced with, including whether to stay in the classroom. The 2024 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, also known as Jazz Fest, kicks off this week. The Rolling Stones tops the list of headliners. And foodies will get some satisfaction too. Several vendors are offering a wide array of dishes featuring crawfish. We caught up with two of them Sonya DiCarlo of Clesi's Seafood Restaurant & Catering and John Caluda of Caluda's King Cakes Cottage Catering. ___ Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Diane Mack. How wonderful to have Rabbi Eric on the show again!Rabbi Eric was raised in a traditional Jewish home. After his bar mitzvah, he began to study the Hebrew Scriptures more closely which brought many questions to his mind. Questions like if a sacrifice had to be made once a year on Yom Kippur to cover the sins of Israel from year to year how were those sins covered now. When he was unable to find answers from the different rabbis that he asked, he became an agnostic. While serving in the US Navy, Rabbi Eric was challenged by a believer in Yeshua to study the Scriptures until he found answers within them. While searching the Hebrew Scriptures, Rabbi Eric found belief in Yeshua as the promised Messiah of Israel which brought answers to all of the questions he had. It is now over 33 years ago. Since then Rabbi Eric studied to become an ordained Rabbi in the IAMCS (International Alliance of Messianic Congregations and Synagogues). He has served as a Rabbi in Mobile, Alabama. He also helped to establish five synagogues across the Gulf Coast in Slidell, Louisiana; Bayou La Batre, Alabama; Spanish Fort, Alabama; Navarre, Florida, and Brit Ahm Messianic Synagogue in Pensacola, Florida, where he serves as Rabbi today. Rabbi Eric has been married for 42 years to his wife Pammy. In addition to God Has No Plan B, Rabbi Eric has written; With Me in Paradise, Transient Singularity, #ManWisdom, OY! How Did I Get Here?,Thirty-One Things I Wish Someone Had Told Me Before Entering Ministry, Jesus is to Christianity as Pasta is to Italians, Romans in Context and Simple Shabbat Siddur.

And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise. — Galatians 3:29 CALL OUT: I want to give a shout-out to Mark Robinson from Slidell, LA, who is using our book 30 Men Who Lived With Conviction with his men. Thanks for leading men. We need men of conviction in the world today. Thanks for being that man. Yesterday, we learned how to exegete the previous verse more accurately than many do. We learned that our spiritual oneness in Christ is a status received by faith and celebrated in baptism. It superseded but did not absolve our ethnicity, status, and gender. The great part of being a believer is the blessing of a unified spiritual family. God knows you want and need a family. God knows your family is messed up. God sees the disobedience of your parents. God sees the rebellion of your children. God knows your family is infested with adultery, perversion, addiction, and abuse. God knows the pain of your broken relationships. He also knows the shame you've had to endure and its effects on everyone in your life. And in the shadow of all this darkness, God had a bright plan. His divine providence is so great he knew thousands of years ago that you would endure this. He saw how messed up your family would be, so he made a promise to a man named Abraham. The promise of a new family planned for you, paid for in blood. In Christ, you have a family—a spiritual family full of messed-up people redeemed by the Father. If this is the case, you need to attend church and enjoy the blessing. I know some churches are ridden with issues. Sometimes, these issues exhaust us. Even so, removing ourselves entirely is never the solution. Like Paul, we have to fight through the problems. Paul is fighting at this moment because he knows the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages. He needs the family. The family needs him. It's not his family. It's God's. It has all kinds of blessings when it works well. God planned this family for you. So get to church. Get to know your family and receive the blessing planned and prepared for you in Christ. #AbrahamsOffspring #FamilyInChrist #RedeemedRelationships #ChurchCommunity #BlessedBelonging ASK THIS: Reflecting on your own journey, how has embracing your identity as a member of God's spiritual family impacted your perspective on the brokenness within your biological family? Considering the challenges you face in your church community, what steps can you take to actively participate in and contribute to the blessings of fellowship and unity that God has prepared for His family? DO THIS: Go to church. PRAY THIS: Father, thank you for the incredible blessing of belonging to Your spiritual family through Christ. Help me to actively engage with and contribute to my church community, embracing the blessings of fellowship and unity You have prepared for us. Amen. PLAY THIS: For Me And My House.

It's Carnival time in New Orleans! But the Big Easy isn't the only place people are celebrating. Just across Lake Pontchartrain sits St. Tammany Parish, a combination of bedroom communities and small towns that embrace nature and a laid-back existence. There, folks in towns such as Slidell, Mandeville, and Madisonville have developed their own unique forms of Mardi Gras merriment. On this week's show, we hear from three of those revelers. We kick things off with Charlotte Collins, who tells us the story of Mona Lisa and MoonPie, the oldest walking parade krewe in the City of Slidell. In 1984, she co-founded the krewe with a mission "to promote the arts, Olde Towne Slidell, and good humor." Their signature throws are MoonPies – the Chattanooga-made treats – which are tossed by the tens of thousands to eager parade-goers each year. Then, Tina Rhinehart talks about the Mande Milkshakers, the Northshore's first all-women marching group. Hailing from the West Tammany town of Mandeville, the adult dance team boasts more than 80 members who dress as mid-century housewives as they strut their stuff in parades on both sides of the lake. Finally, Bonnie Dennis gives us the lowdown on St. Tammany's floating procession, the Krewe of Tchefuncte. For half a century, their flotilla of fun has been making its way along the Tchefuncte River, celebrating the Carnival season, as well as the rich natural resources of St. Tammany Parish. He shares with us some stories of recovery diving from his earlier years as well as the new advancements made to sonar. We learn some of the complexities of water recovery and how depth, current, temperature, and time of year are all a factor. Fighting Camel fans will find it difficult to believe that it's been 27 years since Janice Washington arrived in Buies Creek, all the way from Slidell, Louisiana. Over the next five years, she played a pivotal role in some of Campbell women's basketball's greatest moments – including the program's first-ever NCAA postseason berth. Following graduation, Janice spent a total of nine seasons on Coach Wanda Watkins' staff – helping lead the Camels in the ASUN and the second Big South Conference era. Along the way, she set school records, earned all-conference honors, and served on the student-athlete advisory committee. And she recently returned to The Creek – taking a rare break from her head coaching duties at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania – to take part in Wanda Watkins Day festivities. In the next installment of Tales from the Creek, Janice talks with Stan Cole about how she arrived at Campbell, life in Buies Creek, how she moved into coaching and more.
Touro Infirmary in New Orleans recently launched a program to offer free postpartum home visits to anyone who gives birth at the hospital. Advocates of this initiative see it as a way to tackle Louisiana's high rates of maternal and infant mortality. Josie Abugov, a reporter for Verite News, joins us to talk about what the program has accomplished so far – and what nurses see as the biggest obstacles. A recent investigation into the New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board found that a handful of the agency's quality samplers had falsified drinking water testing results. According to the findings, up to five employees did not make all the stops they are supposed to make, in order to ensure the city's drinking water is up to par. News of the lax monitoring is leaving residents and regulators wondering if water quality reports from that time are accurate. We talk with Matt McBride, who has been investigating the issue for the Louisiana Illuminator. The music organization Notes for Education Northshore Fund is gearing up for its first Twilight Symphony concert, an outdoor concert by candlelight in Slidell. As we creep closer to October 31, Louisiana Eats is getting into the spooky spirit with our annual Halloween episode. This year, we've cooked up some pretty delicious and unsettling tales for you! We begin with culinary historian Sarah Lohman who travels back in time to share the earliest food traditions surrounding death. Sarah tells us stories of the funeral fare that gives a whole new meaning to being close with one's family. Next, we bring you to Slidell, where during an interview taping in August the Louisiana Eats crew experienced a haunting – right in the middle of the day – at Palmettos on the Bayou. Executive chef Ross Dover and owner Duffy Ramirez tell us about the restaurant's poltergeists, whom they lovingly refer to as "the Baseball Kids." Then, we're joined by bartenders Kelsey Ramage and Erin Hayes, whose love of Halloween led them to what is now an international pop-up bar experience called Black Lagoon. Fittingly, their story all begins right here at the Dungeon in New Orleans' French Quarter. Finally, we go after grandma's long lost potato salad recipe with the help of Mary Ann Winkowski, author of Beyond Delicious: The Ghost Whisperer's Cookbook. After Dennis Turcotte's body was discovered bound and dumped in 1978, New Orleans Police Detective Frank Weicks traveled out of his jurisdiction to the rural area of Talisheek to assist in the case. The working theory was Turcotte had spent time in New Orleans French Quarter and was possibly kidnapped from there. But once at the crime scene, Weicks found some pressing and practical problems. In this episode, Weicks explains his concerns about the integrity of the investigation. And a suspect emerges. Who is he? How did he know Dennis Turcotte?

Gigi Hansen takes us on a magical journey from her early days in Slidell, Louisiana all the way to landing her dream job for a major media giant. After explaining how she and her sisters got their nicknames, Gigi guides us through some tumultuous years. From Mobile, Alabama her freshman year of high school, her dad's decision to move to Tembagapura, Indonesia and to Wasatch Academy which eventually turned out her rock solid group of friends she cherishes to this day. After a brief stint at Louisiana State University, she'd had enough and returned to her heart in Utah to attend University of Utah where she immediately found peace and joy. We reminisce some on the magical summer of 1982 in Tembagapura where we had talks that certainly shaped my outlook going forward. Gigi is authentic and has very little patience for the pretentious among us. She met her amazing husband John, who'd served a mission in England, and had two beautiful children Josh and Alivia and grandchildren Lillianne and Charlie. She has run her husband's successful business for more than 20 years and has landed her dream job. She offers comfort to her loved ones with life lessons and her friendship is to be cherished forever. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jason-scarabin/message
Lafayette is home to two hospital systems and has a deep bench of medical providers. It's the Hub City in a new kind of way. It's Acadiana's medical hub. So it might surprise you to learn that access to health care is still a problem. Every parish in Acadiana, except Lafayette, has a federally designated shortage of healthcare providers. Why? Well, if the answer were easy, it wouldn't be a problem. But suffice it to say the health business is complicated because health is complicated. And we can look at the issue from two ends: providers on the one, and patients on the other. Donna Aucoin is a medical psychologist and owner of Aucoin & Associates, a private therapy practice. Donna began her career in mental health as a social worker. After going back to school to become a psychologist, she worked for the state office of mental health as a regional psychologist, where she did clinical work and developed community programs. She left state employment and moved into private practice, her long-term goal, founding Aucoin & Associates. The practice has grown substantially and now offers a range of mental health services for individual patients, families and groups. In health care, it takes two tango. And the other partner here is the patient. Health education plays a big role in public health outcomes. And Gabriel Morley plays a big role in health education. Gabriel is the CEO of Southwest Area Health Education Center, or SWLAHEC. AHECs are nonprofits set up by Congress in the 1970s to address health care shortages and can be found in every state. Gabriel's office covers the Lafayette and Lake Charles areas and develops programs designed to help people make healthier lifestyle choices. SWLAHEC also helps patients navigate the market for low- and no-cost health insurance and trains providers on community care. Gabriel holds a doctorate in adult education and came to his job at SWLAHEC after a career working in libraries. He grew up in Slidell and holds a doctorate in adult education. Out to Lunch Acadiana was recorded live over lunch at Tsunami Sushi in downtown Lafayette. Barely thirty minutes northeast of New Orleans, you'll find a thriving, world class culinary scene in Slidell, Louisiana. For over 20 years now, Duffy Ramirez has paved the fine dining path at Palmettos on the Bayou. Beginning with a century-old homestead, Duffy expanded and grew his restaurant from the original 40 seats to today's capacity for up to 400 without ever losing the intimate feel of Palmettos' original cottage. When executive chef Ross Dover took the reins in Palmettos' kitchen, the operation took a serious step up. We sat down in the restaurant's dining room for two conversations: first with Chef Ross and then with Duffy to learn more about the special spot along the bayou.
Public schools in Baton Rouge canceled classes Monday after an employee sickout that began with bus drivers expanded over the weekend to include cafeteria workers. Charles Lussier, reporter for the Baton Rouge Advocate, tells us about the conditions that led to the strike and negotiations between school officials and union representatives. After 82 years, a Louisiana sailor who died aboard the USS Oklahoma during the Dec. 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor has finally been identified. The remains of the navy ship's cook, Clarence Thompson, will be brought to Slidell for a proper burial. Denise Bennett, Thompson's second cousin twice removed, tells us how forensic technology helped identify her long-lost relative, and how he will finally be honored. This fall, families across Louisiana can read and discuss award-winning children's books as part of the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities' new reading initiative. More than 60 programs will take place across roughly 20 parishes, with some starting as soon as the end of this month. Director of curriculum Sarah DeBacher tells us more about the program's goal to increase literacy and learning across the state. Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Karen Henderson. On this week's show, we're trekking across the Causeway once again to explore the culinary scene in St. Tammany Parish. We begin at Backwater Farmstead in the rural town of Bush, Louisiana. There, Ross McKnight and his family make foie gras, a luxury food they hope to make more accessible in our state. After we tour the farm, we head over Olde Town Slidell to meet Jeremy and Alyssa Reilly of Restaurant Cote and the Maple Room. These high school sweethearts have carved out a very special place in the hearts and stomachs of the Slidell community for nearly 10 years. We then speak with Nick Asprodites, the proprietor of two dockside restaurants and bars: the original Blue Crab on the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain and a second iteration at the Pointe Marina in Slidell. Finally, we meet Chef Jeff Mattia. Jeff opened his first restaurant, Pyre Provisions, in Covington just months before the Covid-19 pandemic began. Though Pyre Provisions closed its doors this year, Jeff has found continued success in his newest restaurant concept, Pyre BBQ on the Mandeville Trace. Billy Dwyer of Slidell, Louisiana and Kesten Jessee of Lebanon, Virginia share a common goal; to finish a well-bred coonhound pup from scratch without help from other dogs. Both are accomplishing what they intended to do and this episode covers their stories.Billy's hound Ruby is a Treeing Walker female and Kesten's hound Clyde is a Treeing Walker male. Both are less than two years old and each of them had their owners often questioning their future outcomes. The boys discuss how they accomplished the goal of having each hound treeing raccoons on a regular basis and making their owners proud. This is a short list of basic steps that enabled the hunters to realize their goals. Each hound remains a work in progress but with more than one hundred coons treed to date, the plan is working to near perfection. This is an episode for the hunter that would rather have it his or her way than to purchase a hound created by someone else. Don't let the title of this episode fool you. These guys know their stuff.
