Danielle Dick, PhD is the distinguished Commonwealth Professor of Psychology and Human and Molecular Genetics at Virgina Commonwealth University. She is an internationally recognized expert on genetic and environmental influences on human behavior. In this interview, we talk about her book The Child Code. In this book, she provides a interesting review on how genes influence behavior, spoiler alert-there isn't a gene for anxiety-it is more complicated. But more importantly from a parenting perspective, she provided a convenient way of thinking about temperament, what she called the 3 E's and quizes to help you figure out where you and your child are on this dimension. Importantly, she notes that we have to adjust our parenting style to match the temperament of your child. The Child Code is an extremely useful book for parents that is grounded in very solid science. We discussed a few things including:1. Their career journeys2. The mental health crisis3. Jen's vision/promly4. Danielle's research and vision for Thrive Genetics + The Child Code5. Trends, challenges and opportunities in healthJennifer Libby has been a psychotherapist for over 20 years treating at-risk adolescents. Jennifer has been sounding the alarm for many years about the rapidly emerging youth mental health crisis exacerbated by less than responsible social media platforms. Frustrated by the slow movement by the social media industry to “do better” for kids, and in response to her own family tragedy, Jennifer founded Promly as a healthier alternative to legacy social media. Jennifer's advocacy for better treatment of youth by Big Tech was well received recently in Washington, D.C. where she spoke to a large group of U.S. House Representatives regarding her on-going efforts (informed by client experience and Promly's Gen Z advisory board) to have YouTube remove and/or disrupt the algorithm for the “how to tie a noose” and “how to hang yourself” videos that provide step by step video instructions often created by teens themselves. Of note, suicide by hanging in children and teens has increased by exponential numbers in the last 10 years. It is examples like this that drive Promly to re-imagine how social media can “do better” for teens. Jennifer also speaks publicly on a variety of other mental health concerns impacting teens and has provided consultation with numerous agencies including Center for Humane Tech (producers of the “The Social Dilemma”) on best practices for teens and tech. ---Danielle Dick, Ph.D. is the Greg Brown Endowed Chair of Neuroscience and a Professor of Psychiatry at Rutgers University, where she directs the Rutgers Addiction Research Center. She has been named one of the most highly cited researchers in the world. Danielle is an author of THE CHILD CODE. In this conversation Danielle talks about how our genes and environment can influence our health and behavior. We talk about things like substance abuse, eating disorder, depression and other psychiatric conditions - is it individual's fault? Danielle says that "our brains are all wired very differently on the inside". When talking about addiction, Danielle explains that, interestingly, how our brains process reward appears to be more important than predisposition to specific substance. Emotion regulation is another big factor that influences addictive behaviors. We discuss anxiety, the role it plays, and the evolutionary advantage it was born from. Danielle concludes that genetic code we are born with is important, but it does not mean we are destined to have problems. Environment plays an important role and can make a huge difference. Finally, we discuss how this science translates in child care and parenting. Understanding your child's disposition is key for applying appropriate parenting strategies and nurturing a healthy family environment. Tune in to learn more! Genetics play an important role in the positive aspects of our personality, the potential challenges we might have in life, and the overall tendencies of how we'll act and behave. Although our genes are fundamental for this equation, the environment in which we live and the people and places that surround us are also responsible for many things. Being aware of this balance is the first step to self-knowledge. In today's episode of What You're Craving, Molly welcomes Dr. Danielle Dick, PhD and author of ‘The Child Code'. Besides explaining the idea of genetics and biology, Dr. Danielle also touches on important points about parenting and child behavior. The way kids are raised will potentially influence their adult life and, as parents, it's important to involve children in all of the solution processes. Tune in! Episode Quote “What I mean is not that genes are destiny and DNA is destiny, that we don't have an active important role in our life outcomes, but very often we completely ignore the really important role of genes in so much in human behavior.” – Dr. Danielle Dick Key Highlights Dr. Danielle shares her background in psychology and genetics; Does willpower is enough to break an addictive cycle? How addictive behaviors can go a different route? How much does genetic play a role on the way we show up to the world and how we interact with it; How parenting influence our tendencies in adulthood; Dr. Danielle explains that, as parents, it's important to solve problems with the kids participating; Our traits, personality and unique characteristics were given to us for a reason; it's important to accept the way we were made; DNA is not our destiny. It's not something unchangeable, but also not something to be ignored; Dr. Danielle explains that half of our differences and tendencies are due to biology, and half is due to our environment; Dr. Danielle shares her thoughts on what we're all craving. Genes shape not only your child's behavior but also how they respond to things you can control in their upbringing, Dr Danielle Dick tells PJ. Every parent has worries about how their actions will impact their child when the grow up. It's part of the deal of being a parent. I know for me I had fears that something I had watched on TV would give her nightmares. When she was a month or two old my daughter was sleeping on my chest so I started watching Nightmare On Elm Street. At some point during the movie she woke up and I had this terrible feeling that she saw just enough to terrify her little brain. In all honesty she was so young she probably had no idea what was going on in the first place. But these are the things you worry about as a parent. We put so much pressure on ourselves to be the perfect parents and perfect people for our kids. What if I told you that most of what we do will have no impact on their behavior as an adult? That's what Dr. Danielle Dick's research has found. Genetics play a bigger part in determining what our kid is going to be like. Knowing that does take some of the pressure off us, but it also allows us to find different ways to work with them. Understanding that our kids may be genetically predisposed to a certain type of behavior gives us the opportunity to meet them where they're at. Dr. Dick has laid out her research in a new book called 'The Child Code: Understanding Your Child's Unique Nature For Happier, More Effective Parenting.' We'll be talking about this research in this week's conversation.
Danielle Dick, Ph.D. is the Commonwealth Professor of BOTH Psychology and Human and Molecular Genetics at Virginia Commonwealth University. Her research focuses on how genetic and environmental influences contribute to the development of patterns of substance use and related behaviors. Her first book, The Child Code was just released. Danielle and Lisa Marie discuss the many differences of our brains and how to teach our children to appreciate them.
Why are your kids so different? Why is one kid so much harder to parent than their brothers or sisters? If you have more than one child you know how different your children can be. And so why is this? To answer this I invited an expert on human and molecular genetics Dr. Danielle Dick. In her newest book, The Child Code, Understanding Your Child's Unique Nature for Happier, More Effective Parenting she says, "Why is parenting so darn hard? It turns out there is a simple answer to that question. The reason that parenting is so challenging is that all of that well meaning advice from your parents and friends and pediatricians ignores one of the biggest factors that affects child development-genes. Danielle gives us a powerful, science-driven parenting that helps your child grow into the best version of themself. Danielle M. Her new book is THE CHILD CODE: Understanding Your Child's Unique Nature for Happier, More Effective Parenting, which offers a science-based approach to parenting centered on a child's unique genetic “code." In this Fresh Take interview, Danielle explains how understanding our child's unique genetic tendencies helps us parent that child more effectively. Our children's genes lay the foundation for their dispositions, and they influence the way our children move through the world. By working with our children's genetic dispositions, we can support our children's strengths and help them navigate their challenges.
