The phoney war's over. The shooting war has begun. And it isn't going at all well. France is in collapse, its generals quickly turning defeatist and its politicians unable to shake them out of their inertia. Churchill tried hard, flying across to talk them into keeping up the fight, but without success. In the end, they surrendered to the Germans, being forced to sign an armistice in the same railway wagon, in the same forest, where they had previously forced the Germans to sign their armistice at the end of World War One. Britain was now more isolated than ever. Not as alone as many liked to think, since it had its empire and dominions still with it, and they supplied huge numbers of men. But without either of the growing world powers, the US or the Soviet Union. Now Churchill had to become tougher than ever. First, he had to see off Halifax, his own defeatist, serving in his war cabinet. Fortunately, he had the support of the Labour members, and the man invited as a guest, the Liberal leader too. When Chamberlain finally came down on his side, Churchill, buoyed by the success of the Dunkirk evacuation, could see off Halifax. Next, he had to show that he had the hard core, the ruthlessness even, to win the war. He did that but in a tragic action, the firing by British warships on a French fleet in Mers el-Kébir, in Algeria. The major loss of life among men who'd been allies weeks earlier was a bitter pill for everyone to swallow. Arguably, though, it prepared the British to develop the toughness for the harsh trial that was about to start. As Churchill warned, Hitler had now to turn his ‘whole fury and might' on them. That's the subject of next week's episode. Illustration: ‘Very well, Alone', cartoon by David Low, June 1940. Britain, along with France, might well have declared war against Germany in September 1939. But that didn't lead to much fighting for the next eight months. There was some action at sea, during which the British Royal Navy put an end to German surface raiders, though it had still to face the worst threat to its maritime trade, which came not from ships on the surface, but from submarines. On land, in the west, there was practically no action, in what came to be known as ‘the phoney war'. It wasn't phoney for the Poles of course, who were being bombed and invaded, first only by the Germans from the west, but soon by the Soviets from the east too, rather confirming what many suspected, that the Nazi-Soviet pact included a secret protocol dividing up Poland between the two countries. The Pact also provided the Soviets with the confidence to invade Finland which they did at the end of November. Britain and France decided to come to the Finns' aid by landing troops at the Norwegian port of Narvik, but it took them so long that Finland had been defeated, after some heroic resistance, before the Allies could help. However, the Allies went on with the idea of landing at Narvik,to cut Germany's supplies of iron ore from Sweden, most of which went through the port. Unfortunately, they took so long and were so indiscreet in their plans, that Hitler pre-empted them, invading and occupying Denmark and southern Norway, and getting troops to Narvik first, able to resist the Allied landings when they finally happened. Though marginal in itself, the Narvik fiasco prompted a major debate in the British House of Commons, in which the government, although it won a final vote of confidence, did so with so small a majority that Chamberlain felt major changes had to be made. He decided it was time to form a national government, in coalition with Labour and the Liberals. That, though, proved impossible to pull off if he stayed on as Prime Minister. He stood down and, as the front runner to replace him, Halifax, said he wasn't prepared to take the post, it inevitably fell to Winston Churchill to shoulder the burden. Labour and the Liberals joined him. So it was together behind him, as depicted by David Low in a new cartoon, that they faced the next, far worse crisis that was about to hit Britain and France. A History of England

In the mid-1930s, there was still widespread hope across Britain that a major war could be avoided. That could be achieved, many believed, by international negotiation towards disarmament, and by collaboration to enforce the decisions reached. A body existed to achieve just that: the League of Nations. It called a major conference, chaired by Arthur Henderson, former British Foreign Secretary, former leader of the Labour Party. It set out with plenty of great intentions but achieved nothing. Too few countries were prepared to trust others enough to make the cuts in their armaments that might have made a real difference. Meanwhile, another British politician, this time a Conservative, Lord Robert Cecil, one of the architects of the League of Nations and president of the British association dedicated to supporting it, the League of Nations Union, was campaigning for international collaboration to give real force to decisions of the League or elsewhere, so that breaches could be genuinely and effectively punished. He organised an unofficial referendum in Britain, the Peace Ballot, completed in 1935, that showed how massively the British people supported efforts for peace. Sadly, though, that year, 1935, would be the peak of such efforts. Thereafter events would drive the world increasingly towards another war. Indeed, one of those events had already happened, as early as in September 1931: the Japanese invasion of the Chinese territory of Manchuria. Someone like the outstanding political cartoonist David Low would go so far as to identify that moment as the true start of the Second World War. That notion, with which this episode starts, rather suggests that efforts to prevent the Second World War reached their peak, only to fall away afterwards, when it could be argued that, actually, it had already started. 30 years ago this very month Scots-Canadian businessman Fergus McCann swept into Celtic Park and secured the clubs very existence with an eleventh hour investment that would alter the course of Celtic's history for ever. A move such as that however can't be engineered by just one man and many figures played a key role in what eventually took place on that day back on the 4th of March 1994. In this special new series by The Celtic Exchange we speak to some of those individuals as we bring you the inside stories of what unfolded during that incredible time in Celtic history. We're looking at the story from all angles and in Part 2 we speak with David Low, who was widely regarded as Fergus McCann's right hand man during the takeover and a man who was literally in the room when Fergus saved Celtic. David tells us just what was going on with the old Celtic Board at that time and the strategy that, eventually, saw them ousted from the corridors of Celtic Park. The Battle To Save Celtic is a new mini-series by The Celtic Exchange marking 30 years since Fergus McCann's takeover of Celtic in March 1994  =================================================== All Celtic Exchange episodes are now available on YouTube

He is a Celtic fan and has been lucky enough to enjoy not one but two 9IAR's and see Celtic reach 2 European Cup finals and enjoyed the recent quadruple treble. He was involved with Fergus McCann back in 1994 when the rebels won and the old board was ousted. He was a consultant at Celtic during the McCann years which saw Celtic Park redeveloped and Celtic stop Rangers doing the 10IAR.A lot has happened since January when David last chatted to Andrew on the Podcast. Neil Lennon has left the dugout, Peter Lawell is getting ready to leave the directors box and we await the arrival of new CEO Dominic McKay as we wait to see who will become our next Manager. David and Jeanette Findlay represented the Celtic Trust with a meeting with Celtic, CEO Peter Lawell, Financial Director, Chris McKay and Supporters Liason Officer John Paul Taylor recently and he talks about what was said and proposed at the meeting.David quickly explains how the PLC works before going into detail of one of the major talking points of the meeting when the Trust made a proposal to Celtic to compensate the season ticket holders from this season with the option of a gift of shares to the value of the season ticket after you take out the costs of the virtual season ticket.Covid19 and the fallout will continue to have an impact on Celtic and the greater football World David thinks that it may excelorate a European Super League and a chance for Celtic to play outside of Scotland and this was also touched on at the recent meeting in Celtic Park.Andrew asks David to switch from his Celtic fans hat and his financial background on occasions as the conversation flows from what could and should happen at Celtic and in the wider football community with the likes of European Super Powers like Barcelona and Real Madrid heading into serious financial troubled waters. They touch on the management vacancy at Celtic, player exit and maybe more departures from the boardroom. On the new CEO, Dominic McKay who David does not know personally but he says one of his business partners does and he gives his opinion on what he does know of him and he looks back at all the CEO's who have served the club since Fergus McCann took up that position in the boardroom. Peter talks about recent statements and the growth of the Celtic Trust their current shareholding and the targets they are setting and goals they want to achieve to give Celtic fans, a greater say in the running of Celtic. They also touch on Celtic v the Rangers, Glasgow Derby and David climbs back into the Celtic Soul Time machine again, this time Andrew asks him to take us back to his time as a consultant at Celtic. This leads to David having a pop at the SFA for their treatment of Celtic including how they ripped Celtic off when renting Hampden and also how Fergus McCann stood up to the SFA and how the Suits at the club should be nowhere near the Tracksuits. SPFL TO RFC - WTF?   It’s here, the dossier that everyone (well everyone in scottish football) was waiting for.  The evidence, the whistle blower, the reports of bullying, the substantiation, the smoking guns, deep throat, the bombshells that would lead to the resignation of the CEO were all…well NOT there.   Unfortunately RFC seem to confuse questions with evidence and fact with opinion.   Following it’s publication, their CEO (who sits on the SPFL board that is so useless) appeared on Radio Clyde.  after his appearance I’m even more confused as to what it is they want an inquiry into.   Anyway, we set about trying to disect it the whole mess.  I am joined by Anthony Murray and David Low to look at this as objectively as Celtic fans can.   Enjoy…

Today's podcast is a "Welcome Back from Spring Break" message from Mr. Milford and Maclay’s guidance counseling team. Tomorrow (3/24/20) we will launch the Maclay School Distance Learning platform at all grade levels. In this unprecedented time, every member of the Maclay faculty and staff is rallying together for our students and families. Along with our academic focus, we are also launching a Families First Care Team program that involves nearly half of our faculty and staff. The Care Team will reach out to make sure our families are taken care of and connected to our school community beyond what we are doing in the virtual classroom. This is our definition of what makes the Maclay Experience a great one, fully embracing our families. A fundamental belief we have at Maclay is the importance of the individual journey. Within our Mission Statement, the words 'each' and 'balance' and 'fullest potential' echo throughout our programs. As a school that cares about childhood development from 3-year-olds to 18-year-olds, we are mindful of the structure and flexibility it takes for all of our students to chase their interests and tackle problems worth solving. We believe that the potential in each student drives their particular interest, and they are naturally drawn to those things that will fully expand them, their abilities, and guide them to their maximum impact. Today's podcast shares one of the many stories of this potential turned into action and impact. Sophomore Molly Johnson saw a need and wanted to make a difference. In partnership with the Admission Office and 20+ Maclay students, the Student Ambassador program was born and is running strong. It helps build the connections and deepen them throughout the admission and orientation process. Molly is one of the many stories like these. Making an impact as a student at Maclay is not only possible, it is an expectation of the full experience. As individuals, we are not always skilled at specifying our goals, but as our vision sharpens through experiences, we learn how to adapt and thrive...and in the process, we grow. Not everyone has to start a club; there are countless ways we try to live our mission to, "enable each student to develop their inherent ability to the fullest extent with a balance of discipline and freedom." On today's podcast, we are joined by Bentley Harris and Janine Couch, both Academic Deans for the Lower School and Middle School, respectively. Over the last few years, Maclay School has been intently focused on fulfilling its mission to develop inherent ability in EACH of our students. This requires a 'human system' that ensures no cracks for students to slip through, and the camouflage common in schools is combated at every level. It is easy for schools to allow "good kids" (by the way, those are all of our students) to move through the educational system and because they don't make waves, and they are not noticed by the inattentive educator. They simply mark time and make it to graduation - fitting in, but never really belonging and getting the most of their Maclay experience. At Maclay, we want to make sure we have people and systems in place to ensure each of our students is noticed, supported, challenged, and directed to find success as they define it. Mrs. Harris and Mrs. Couch have hearts for all of our students and do an amazing job working a growth mindset into our culture and ensuring a positive feedback loop, so partnerships are possible...and ultimately, our students thrive because of it. You will clearly hear how these two educators and professionals make an impact on our Maclay community and EACH student. Today's podcast is one of the most fun and inspiring so far. We are joined by Barbara Cairns, Fran Sandon, and Annie Bell, three members of our Kindergarten team. These teachers share their belief in creating an environment that promotes an eagerness to learn so that students walk in the door excited every morning. You will hear how learning through play, and free choice create a solid academic and social foundation which is so important in kindergarten. Our classrooms are an extension of the family and making connections with not only the students but the parents is vital in creating a thriving and productive environment; Plus, there is advice for parents of children of any age! I would be remiss if I did not mention the aides who are heavily involved in each of these classrooms. All of our lower elementary grades boast two teachers in the classrooms. I have the honor of working the car line each morning, so I get to see these smiling faces as they jump out, excited to be at Maclay - these professionals do amazing work! The partnership is key, and the students benefit in the end!
