COG STUDIOS, Calif. -- The LA Galaxy were busy on the market after they apparently had a deal for David Ousted go sideways and then acquire the rights to Davin Bingham. But is all not right with that deal? Could the Galaxy be without a goalkeeper going into 2018? Your hosts Josh Guesman and Kevin Baxter are reunited in pod land to discuss all the latest Galaxy news. Kevin, while on vacation, stopped over at the Adidas factory to spy on the new Galaxy 2018 home kit. He'll give you the briefest of hints on the new jersey while also ruining Josh's dreams of a Galaxy vs LAFC season opener. He's mean, sometimes! Next, Josh and Kevin will recap the not-so-busy first stage of the MLS Re-Entry draft and they'll once again try to convince you that the Galaxy are actually going to pick someone this time. Josh may even convince you that it's more than one person. Then the guys will dive into all the lastest rumors and give you any updates they can find. Will the Galaxy sign another defender before they get a striker? Who are the striker options right now and should the club take some risks for the coming year? Josh will even get unreasonably angry about having to talk about ANOTHER PATO RUMOR! Seriously! Why?! Finally, the guys will answer listener questions where Kevin gets called out for his clearly blatant affinity for LAFC and why he writes five articles to every one article for the Galaxy. I'm sure it has nothing to do with all the news the Galaxy are breaking every day. It's a great show that gets you almost all the way up to the CoG holiday break. With just a Thursday show remaining, are the Galaxy running out of time to make this a "Happy Christmas?" Everyone at CoG wishes you a very Happy Holiday, no matter how or who you celebrate with! Thank you for letting us be a part of your 2017. And we hope (after Thursday's show) that you make us a part of your 2018 plans, as well! Music Provided by Back Pocket Memory

Whitecaps PxP announcer Paul Dolan says the reason the Whitecaps decided to part ways with David Ousted is the fact he was the second highest paid goaltender in MLS, and in the MLS, you want that money going to your designated players up front.

Vancouver Whitecaps are still top of the West, with five games remaining. With four of those matches on the road, the 'Caps will need to be at their best to stay there and it gets off to a tricky start with a trip to Seattle on Wednesday evening. We preview that match with Radio Cascadia's Steven Agen. Can the 'Caps extend their unbeaten run to eight? Are the Sounders slumping? How will Fredy Montero be received? All this and a lot more Cascadia Cup chat. We also hear from Fredy Montero himself about heading back to his old haunts, plus Carl Robinson, David Ousted, and Jordan Harvey chat to us about how the 'Caps need to approach this season run-in against their closest challengers. We also look back at Saturday's win over Colorado Rapids and hear from both head coaches, and chat with Kendall Waston about his season so far. Due to some technical issues stationwide at CiTR radio, the podcast of Sunday's AFTN Soccer Show will not be available for a couple of days. As such we've used some of the audio from Sunday's show with newly recorded links inbetween them. We'll be bringing out a specially edited version of Sunday's show now later in the week (as Episode 222) and add in some post Seattle stuff, so watch you podcast feeds for that.

It's a busy weekend of football, with Vancouver Whitecaps MLS, USL, and Residency teams all in action in crucial matches. After a long stint at home, the 'Caps first team are back on their travels, heading to expansion side Minnesota United for the very first time. It's rivalry week, so I guess we can call this one the Røvde Derby, as adding a bit of spice to the tie is United's goalkeeper coach Marius Røvde, who left Vancouver after five and a half years to head to Minny. We chat with Marius [at 05:16] about his time in Vancouver, what prompted the move, Minnesota's start to the season, their danger men, and ask, does he know all of David Ousted's weaknesses?! The MLS guys may be on the road, but the USL team is at home, taking on OKC Energy on Saturday afternoon. And they'll have a new face in the line-up, New Zealand striker Myer Bevan. We catch up with Myer [25:59] to chat about what brought him to Vancouver, his time in the Nike Academy in England, and his recent experience at the FIFA U20 World Cup in Korea. The AFTN Soccer Show is brought to you in partnership with BCsoccerweb.com, your one stop site for all your BC, Canadian, and North American soccer news and links. Have a listen!
So it turns out that cheaters actually DO prosper. At least in MLS under PRO referees they do. Vancouver Whitecaps' 1-0 loss to D.C. United, thanks to a dodgy winning penalty call, is a hard one to take. At least we now know what the D.C. aspect of the team stands for. But it wasn't all just down to that one call. The 'Caps did enough to win the game and their finishing, good goalkeeping, and the woodwork, all conspired to prevent that from happening. We look back at all the big talking points from the match and hear the thoughts of both coach, Vancouver's Carl Robinson and D.C.'s Ben Olsen [15:57]. We also chat with the Man of the Match, D.C. goalkeeper Bill Hamid and centre back Steve Birnbaum [53:04]. But the 'Caps have to put all of that behind them as they have a big game coming up this week with a Canadian Championship semi-final second leg in Montreal. We look back at the first leg, ponder what to expect from the second, and hear from two WFC2 players that made their competitive Whitecaps first team debuts last week - Dutch centre back Sem de Wit [73:32] and New Zealand defender Deklan Wynne [81:15]. And there's still time to look at the Whitecaps new training pitch and facility and hear the thoughts of Jordan Harvey, David Ousted, and Robbo on it and training on grass as opposed to turf [97:14] and have a quick look ahead to this Saturday's MLS match with Atlanta. The AFTN Soccer Show is brought to you in partnership with BCsoccerweb.com, your one stop site for all your BC, Canadian, and North American soccer news and links. Have a listen!
A two and a half hour roundtable discussion on the state of Vancouver Whitecaps and Canadian Soccer? Yes please! But don't worry, you don't have to listen to it all in the one sitting because we've split Sunday's mammoth CiTR radio show into two podcasts. Your usual AFTN hosts are joined by Jay Duke to chat about all things Whitecaps, Canadian Premier League, and the recent 2026 World Cup bid. The 'Caps chat is in today's podcast, and the World Cup and Canadian PL one will be coming on Thursday. In this first podcast, we look at the current state of the team, what areas need to be strengthened, who should move on, formations, tactics, how the season might play out and much more. We're also joined by 'Caps keeper David Ousted for our new segment of the show - 'Me, My Shelf, and I' - as the Dane chats about his favourite books, author, and what he's currently reading. Have a listen!
What would make a Good Friday a Great Friday? Vancouver Whitecaps beating Seattle Sounders at BC Place, and making it even better yet is bringing you a special preview show for the first Cascadia Cup clash of the new season. We chat with 'Caps coach Carl Robinson about the task ahead, along with goalkeeper David Ousted and in what will be an emotional occasion for the Sounders all-time leading scorer, striker Fredy Montero. We also hear from the Sounders camp, with audio from head coach Brian Schmetzer, striker Jordan Morris, and Osvaldo Alonso. And there's still time to ask some of the 'Caps players and Robbo about last Saturday's snow farce. Have a listen!
Guests include David Ousted.
In the first episode of Sideline Stories, Whitecaps FC goalkeeper David Ousted chats with Perry Solkowski about a wide-range of topics, including his biggest regret, parenting philosophy, and what might just be the funniest family trip ever.
Four days, two matches, two different competitions, two defeats. That's been Vancouver Whitecaps' week, but the performances and circumstances of the games against San Jose Earthquakes and Tigres in the 'Volcano' were very different natural disasters. The 'Caps battled hard against a much better Tigres side in Mexico on Tuesday night, coming away with just a two goal deficit and are still very much in their CONCACAF Champions League semi-final. We look back at the game, the performances, and the strange feeling of coming away from a game that we expected the team to do much worse in but being disappointed with how things ultimately played out. 'Caps coach Carl Robinson gave us a call just before he headed home from Mexico to chat about the game and what may lie in store in the second leg (00:16:23 mark). There were some good defensive displays in Mexico, especially from Kendall Waston and David Ousted. But where was that in San Jose? Can they produce that every week in MLS? San Jose was a mess. We look at the great start, the turning point of Ousted's sending off, and the subsequent defensive collapse, posing the question what future does Kekuta Manneh have with this team if he can't add a better defensive side to his game and what could the 'Caps get for him if they decided to put him up for a trade? Our player interview this week is with one of the Whitecaps most recent additions, Brek Shea (00:49:48). We sit down with Brek to talk about his career, moving to Vancouver, and life off the pitch. We found it an interesting chat and we're sure you will too. And there's still time to bring you Tim Parker's footballing bucket list (01:16:17). Have a listen.
The second weekend of the 2017 MLS season was an odd one for Cascadia. Seattle came from 2-0 down in the last ten minutes to draw against the Impact on a concrete-like surface in Montreal, and that was the least eventful of the region's games! Portland downed LA at the StubHub Center in a match altered by a questionable red card and heavily affected by injury. Meanwhile, Vancouver nearly broke their winless streak in San Jose in another match undone by a dismissal. The Whitecaps took a 2-0 lead on 17' but David Ousted's red card on 23' changed the complexion of the game. The Earthquakes stormed back for three straight goals in the highest scoring (and most painful) Cascadia fixture of the weekend. We have all the analysis on these three bonkers matches, not to mention a massive preview of Vancouver's CCL Semifinal first leg against Tigres on Tuesday. We scout the opposition, set up the tactics, and try to assemble a path to the Final for the Whitecaps. Previews of Seattle's home opener with NY Red Bull and Portland's big showdown with Houston also follow in a 90-minute long edition of Radio Cascadia. Come get hyped for this CCL Semifinal with us, as Cascadia is again tested on the highest of stages! PLAYLIST: 00:00 - Whitecaps review @ SJ, CCL Semifinal preview @ Tigres UANL 34:45 - Timbers review @ LA, preview v Houston 59:45 - Sounders review @ Montreal, preview v NYRB

We're back for one final show from Wales as Vancouver Whitecaps wrap up their first of two preseason camps. We look back at the latest game, what the camp has told us, and chat about some of the latest news and rumours out there in Whitecapsland. This episode is something of a nod to the Goalkeepers Union as well. We sit down with the 'Caps new goalkeeping coach, Stewart Kerr, and chat with the number one man between the sticks, David Ousted. So before we say hwyl fawr to Cymru for one last time, have a listen.
The podcast is back. We were off for too long. Sounds fitting, sadly, for the end of the Whitecaps’ season. Marc Weber joins Patrick Johnston to look at a team clearly on the verge of transition. First, how did we get here? And then there’s that dustup in training this week between David Ousted and […]
They may have had some luck, poor finishing by their opponents and an inspired David Ousted along the way, but Vancouver Whitecaps got back on the horse again on Saturday night with a 3-0 win over MLS leaders FC Dallas. We look back over the win, the standouts, the key moments and what it might mean for the Whitecaps going forward, now that they've broken their three game winless streak and scored their first open play goal of the season. We hear from both head coaches, Vancouver's Carl Robinson and Dallas' Oscar Pareja, and visit the visitors' locker room to hear from Canadian striker Tesho Akindele, defender Walker Zimmerman and former Whitecap Mauro Rosales. And there's still time to look ahead to Wednesday Western Conference clash at home to Sporting KC. What changes will Robbo make for that one? There's a lot of chat to be had, so have a listen!
Vancouver Whitecaps made it back to back MLS wins at the weekend, facing Houston Dynamo very shorthanded and coming away with the 1-0 win. The defensive side of the Whitecaps game is improving by the week. What's behind the turnaround and is it here to stay? We hear the thoughts of head coach Carl Robinson, goalkeeper David Ousted, and defenders Jordan Harvey and Fraser Aird. At the other end of the pitch, Vancouver are still struggling to put the ball in the net from open play. Are the goals coming or should we be deeply concerned? Ousted and Robbo give us their thoughts and we share ours. We look ahead to the visit of LA Galaxy at the weekend and ponder what lies in store from that one and which of their big name players may or may not make the trip north. Our special guest this week is Houston Dynamo head coach Owen Coyle (find it at the 21.55 mark). We sit down with him for an extended chat about his move to MLS, life at the Dynamo, the challenges the league presents, his career to date as a player and a manager and a lot more. And there's still time to talk a little bit of Canadian men's national team. There's a lot of chat to be had, so have a listen!

It's December, it's the offseason, so that can only mean one thing - AFTN's annual pre Christmas "State of the Whitecaps" chat with 'Caps coach Carl Robinson. As always, Robbo is very open and honest with us about the season past and what lies ahead for 2016 and beyond. How busy will the 'Caps be in the transfer market this offseason and where is Robbo looking to strengthen? How will the new TAM be used and will this see at least one more DP come to Vancouver? Where will the goals come from next year? We cover all this and a lot more in our half hour chat, as we talk tactics and formations, the value of MLS experience, the complexities of moving players within the league, developmental pathways and find out the latest on David Ousted, Cristian Techera, Callum Irving and some other titbits. And we also ask the big question - what would it take to tempt Robbo away from the Whitecaps right now? As an added extra this year, we also have a chat with WFC2 head coach Alan Koch about what he's learned from the club's first USL season, preparations for year two, and the upcoming MLS SuperDraft. Have a listen!

Hear from Whitecaps head coach Carl Robinson and players Kendall Waston and David Ousted and also Timbers head coach Caleb Porter on this edition of Soccer Talk.
They've only been and gone and done it. Vancouver Whitecaps are your 2015 Canadian Champions and the celebrations went on long and hard in Canada's soccer city after Wednesday night's Voyageurs Cup win. AFTN has been there for the heartbreak, so it's about time we're there for the joy as well! We look back at the win over Montreal and hear from both coaches, the Whitecaps' Carl Robinson and the Impact's Frank Klopas, along with Montreal players Eric Kronberg and Callum Mallace. Amidst all the celebrations, we grabbed a couple of exclusives for you, our loyal podcast listeners, and we chat with two men that have been through the years of disappointment into the competition to get to this point, Whitecaps President Bobby Lenarduzzi and Curva Collective's Zachary Meisenheimer. But Wednesday's win is already in the past, so we look forward to Saturday's match-up with Houston Dynamo in MLS action. Who will play in this one after a busy few days? Can the 'Caps get their first win in Texas? We'll soon find out. And there's still time to look back at what's been a hectic but fairly successful month of August for the Whitecaps so far, with the help of Carl Robinson, David Ousted and Tim Parker. Have a listen!
Vancouver Whitecaps are set to get back to MLS action after their bye week. Our last episode was a "Season So Far" roundtable, so we now bring you part two - the "Season Still To Come". We're joined once again by AFTN writer Jay Duke and regular AFTN podcast contributor Zachary Meisenheimer to look at the issues of the day surrounding the 'Caps. Who should be moved out in the transfer window and what positions need strengthened? Is the squad depth good enough? Will there be any movement at all? There's a busy season still to come for the 'Caps in MLS, Champions League and Voyageurs Cup action. What should be their priorities and how will they fare in each competition? Also, what one word and what movie titles could sum up the Whitecaps' season so far? And there's still time for Whitecaps goalkeeper David Ousted to tell us his "Desert Island Discs" and for another instalment of everyone's least favourite gameshow, "30 Seconds To Mars". Have a listen!
Vancouver Whitecaps have packed their bags and hit the road for six weeks, but fear not, the AFTN podcast will keep you close to the guys. In Episode 114 of "There's Still Time" we look back at the win over RSL and ahead to the Montreal Impact and the five game road stretch ahead, with audio from coaches Carl Robinson and Jeff Cassar. Will this finally be the game that sees Gershon Koffie become more consistent? Will Octavio Rivero get the big money move he seeks if he can't finish one on one chances? And just how much better and key can David Ousted get? The front four seems pretty set now (squad rotation aside) and it looks to be a South American affair. We chat with one of them, Argentine midfielder Mauro Rosales about his and the Caps' season so far, his injuries and does he prefer the number 10 role? Away from MLS action, the tightly clad ball girls Marianne and Gabby brought us the draw for the CONCACAF Champions League and the Caps will face old foes and new in Seattle Sounders and DC Olimpia. We hear from Whitecaps Club President Bobby Lenarduzzi about drawing the Sounders, travelling to Honduras and more. And there's still time to hear from Carl Robinson about the Caps' plans for the July transfer window with a busy end of year awaiting the team. Have a listen!
A winless weekend for the Whitecaps, but fear not, the AFTN podcast is here to try and take your mind off things. Although talking about the things probably doesn't quite do that. Hmmm. We're joined by guest Harjeet Johal for most of this episode, to look over the loss to Seattle Sounders and look ahead to this Wednesday Canadian Championship semi-final second leg at FC Edmonton. What went wrong and can Robbo turn things around quickly? How strong a team will take the pitch at Clarke Field? Was the 'Caps early season success a true indication of the team or inflated? We hear from both head coaches, Vancouver's Carl Robinson and Seattle's Sigi Schmid, along with audio from the victorious Sounders locker room as we chat with goalscorer Chad Barrett and the central defensive pairing of Brad Evans and Chad Marshall. And we have a couple of MLS veteran goalkeeping guests on this episode as well. First up, former Sounders keeper and current colour guy Kasey Keller talks a little bit about the weekend's match and then former Sporting KC keeper Jimmy Nielsen talks to us about getting in to coaching in Oklahoma and shares his thoughts on his fellow Dane, David Ousted. And there's still time to look at WFC2's 2-2 draw with OKC Energy in USL action and chat with coach Alan Koch. Have a listen!
It's been a busy few days in Whitecapsland as the various incarnations of Vancouver Whitecaps played four games over two days and came away with just one win, two draws and a loss. The defeat came in MLS action on Saturday night where referee Dave Gantar gave the impression that he wanted to be the centre of attention. Whether he did or not, he became it anyway. We look back at just what went wrong in the Caps' 2-1 loss to DC and get the thoughts of both coaches, Vancouver's Carl Robinson and DC's Ben Olsen, along with Whitecaps captain Pedro Morales and goalkeeping rock David Ousted. We also have some exclusive chats from the victorious DC United locker room as we hear from debutant sub keeper Travis Worra, matchwinner Chris Rolfe and Perry Kitchen, and we talk with Kofi Opare about the game and the chances of him suiting up for the Canadian national team. Turning our attention to USL action, we take a brief look at WFC2's 1-1 draw with Seattle Sounders 2 on Sunday and hear from coach Alan Koch, goalscorer Robert Earnshaw and captain Tim Parker. And there's still time to have an extended one on one chat with S2 head coach Ezra Hendrickson about the game, his team's season so far and just how Seattle are looking to use their USL side.
Will we be looking back on April 22, 2015 as one of the defining moments in MLS history? The Montreal Impact sure hope so as they head to Mexico City for the CONCACAF Champions League final first leg against Mexican champs Club America. Montreal captain Nigel Reo-Coker, who joins the guys from Mexico City, sounds pretty confident -- find out why. Also, Matt Pavlich of Opta Sports tells you all you need to know about the Impact's opponents.Meanwhile, in MLS play there's another Canadian team making waves as the Vancouver Whitecaps extended their lead atop the league standings. Goalkeeper David Ousted calls in to answer the question on everyone's mind: Are the 'Caps truly MLS Cup contenders? Meanwhile, the Red Bulls continue to make their case in the East, while their intra-city rivals NYCFC miss out on a huge opportunity. Have they become David Villa dependent? In the mailbag there's more Jordan Morris talk and a Twitter controversy over the weekend has us all wondering: What the hell happened to this country?
Ladies and gentlemen, a big hand for your MLS leading Vancouver Whitecaps. Five games in and top of the pile. A very happy Easter indeed. Eggscellent you could say. But enough of the yolks, it's episode 104 of "There's Still Time", the AFTN podcast and it's our LA postgame show. We look back over the Whitecaps' masterful performance with the help of special guest Harjeet Johal. Who stood out? Who had more ball touches than Diego Rodriguez? When will Octavio Rivero be heading for the English Premiership? How jealous are TFC fans of the 'Caps start? All that and much more. We also hear the postgame thoughts from both coaches, Vancouver's Carl Robinson and LA's Bruce Arena, and there audio galore from both locker rooms. From the joyous Whitecaps, we hear from clean sheet merchant David Ousted, stellar defender Kendall Waston, goalscorer Kekuta Manneh and El Capitan Pedro Morales. And what would a post LA game podcast be without hearing from the man that is Mr Soundbite himself, Robbie Keane?! The Irish striker doesn't let us down again and we also hear from a very down sounding AJ DeLaGarza and the man who would be Zorro, Gyasi Zardes. And there's still time to look ahead to Wednesday's game against Columbus and how WFC2 have fared in the USL season so far. Have a listen!
Mondays with Marius returns to Province Sports Radio, albeit on a Tuesday. But like the Whitecaps the last three weeks, we say better late than never!
Another Saturday, another late, late winning goal for Vancouver Whitecaps. It's all getting so wonderfully predictable! Portland Timbers became the latest team to be on the end of a Whitecaps smash and grab thanks to Robert Earnshaw's 90th minute winner. Nice to do that in any game but when it's in a Cascadian derby against one of your fiercest rivals, then it's even sweeter. So as you can imagine, we're pretty cock-a-hoop here at AFTN Towers as we bring you our double whammy of our Portland postgame show and a quick USL WFC2 preview podcast. We pick over the bones of the game and hear from both Vancouver coach Carl Robinson and Portland head honcho Caleb Porter, with their thoughts on how the match played out, the goals and the key players. And talking of those, we also hear from Whitecaps match winner Robert Earnshaw and the man of the match, goalkeeper David Ousted. We also hear from the Portland locker room, with the thoughts of Timbers DP Liam Ridgewell, goalscorer Fanendo Adi and defender Nat Borchers. And there's still time for a quick look at WFC2 kicking off their USL season against Seattle on Sunday, as we chat with head coach Alan Koch and captain Tyler Rosenlund. Have a listen!
The lion sleeps tonight. Well Lions actually. Vancouver Whitecaps have headed home after two successful away games that saw them claim six points, two clean sheets and create late drama galore. We look back over the weekend win over Orlando City, and hear some thoughts on the match from 'Caps coach Carl Robinson, goalkeeper David Ousted, and defenders Steven Beitashour, Jordan Harvey and Pa Modou Kah. But that's all in the past now, for the first Cascadia derby of the season is coming up this weekend and we preview the Portland game. Who will play? Who will be suspended? Will the Timbers have a midfield left? We look ahead to the big battle and hear some views on the game and the stories surrounding it from both coaches - Carl Robinson and Caleb Porter And we have to say, the end of the Porter audio does make for some uncomfortable and cringingly awful listening!
Vancouver Whitecaps are still camping hard in the hope that the 2015 MLS season will actually get underway on time. It's a buoyant 'Caps camp, but then again, when is it not? Coming off a 6-0 friendly win on Sunday helps of course. We look back at the UVIC Vikes match-up and ask if there was really much than you can take from such a hammering? One of the standout players on Sunday though was young Canadian internationalist Marco Bustos. We speak one-on-one with Bustos about his first camp as a MLS pro, how he's progressing and his hopes for the season. A player who is hoping to build upon a great MLS season last year is Whitecaps goalkeeper David Ousted. The great Dane led the league with 13 clean sheets. Can we expect more of the same or even better? And how will the chemistry be with a new central defensive pairing in front of him? Ousted chats about all this and more. From those with contracts, to one hoping to earn one. We ran our written interview with Welsh striker Robert Earnshaw last week, but if you missed it or if you want more, here's our full exclusive chat with the goalscorer that may be the answer to the Whitecaps search for a veteran forward. And there's still time to feature a quick roundtable chat around the Collective Bargaining Agreement that could mean a MLS players' strike. Will it come to this? We hope not, but the players have our full support. Have a listen!
Episode 83 of "There's Still Time", the AFTN Soccer podcast, is a post playoff clinching special! It's been some three weeks for the Whitecaps with a unique treble of the Cascadia Cup, a Champions League spot and now a playoff place, kicking off against Dallas on Wednesday. We look back at the win against Colorado that got them there and the challenge ahead posed by Dallas. There's postgame audio from a jubilant Whitecaps locker room as we hear from coach Carl Robinson, goalscorer Kendall Waston, goalkeeper David Ousted and young homegrown star Sam Adekugbe. The Whitecaps headed down to Texas by a charter flight on Monday morning and we were at the airport to get the latest thoughts from Robinson, Ousted, Jordan Harvey, Andy O'Brien and Russell Teibert. Have a listen!
Episode 82 of "There's Still Time", the AFTN Soccer podcast, is a post Thanksgiving show and there's a lot to give thanks for in Whitecapsland. Now that they've lifted another Cascadia Cup, it's one goal down, two to go for Vancouver Whitecaps. After a dramatic and critically important win over Seattle Sounders on Friday, the Whitecaps could find themselves just 90 minutes away from both a MLS playoff place and a spot in next year's CONCACAF Champions League when they face San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday night. Or they may have to wait another week and even face playing catch up. We look back at the big talking points from the Sounders game, the players that stood out and those that didn't, and what shape the Whitecaps are looking in, in the battle for the postseason. Moving on to this week's training, we hear the thoughts of head coach Carl Robinson, goalkeeper David Ousted and centreback Andy O'Brien about Seattle, San Jose and the playoff race.Kekuta Manneh talks about his love for scoring against Seattle, the works he needs to do on his game and his international future, whilst new homegrown signing Kianz Froese chats about his MLS debut. And there's still time to look ahead to the San Jose game at the weekend. What Earthquakes team will turn up and will the pressure get to the Whitecaps? Have a listen!
Episode 81 of "There's Still Time", the AFTN Soccer podcast, is a Vancouver Whitecaps v FC Dallas postgame show. We pick over the bones of the 'Caps back to back home wins, that leaves them still with a narrow one point lead over Portland in the battle for the last playoff place in the West. There's locker room audio from Whitecaps head coach Carl Robinson, David Ousted, Sebastian Fernandez, Kendall Waston and Mauro Rosales, along with Dallas head coach Oscar Pareja. And there's still time for some Whitecaps news and notes, as we chew the fat on Omar Salgado, USL PRO, Russell Teibert and the Canadian men's national team, and the Whitecaps Residency.
Episode 80 of "There's Still Time", the AFTN Soccer podcast, looks back at a very busy, and at times disappointing, week in Whitecapsland. There was the good - the signing of tow homegrown players. The bad - the failure to convince New Westminster to be the home for the Caps' USL Pro team. And the ugly - Vancouver head to Portland this weekend to face Will Johnson and co. We bring you all the chatter from training this week in another raw audio heavy episode. We hear from those homegrown signings, Marco Bustos and Kianz Froese about their new MLS deals and we get the thoughts of Whitecaps coach Carl Robinson on the pair. Those were the only two signings announced on Monday before the MLS roster freeze and Whitecaps President Bobby Lenarduzzi tells us why and talks about the USL Pro situation, the season run-in and more. Keeping with the young theme we hear from Christian Dean about his first MLS start in last week's game against Dallas and from the guy that scored Vancouver's goal down there, and who everyone hopes is going to go on another streak, Erik Hurtado. Turning attention to back to the remainder of the MLS season, we hear from Robinson and some of the players about being in a full playoff mindset already and how each of these remaining six games is already basically a playoff game if Vancouver want to reach the postseason once again. Robinson also looks ahead to this weekend's big Cascadia Cup clash in Portland and we hear from some of the players - goalkeeper David Ousted, centreback Andy O'Brien and midfielders Matias Laba, Mauro Rosales and Russell Teibert. A busy show for a busy week!
Episode 79 of "There's Still Time", the AFTN Soccer podcast, is a 'Legends of Vancouver' special. Past and hopefully future. The number 79 has special connotations for Whitecaps supporters. 1979 is the year we won the NASL Soccer Bowl and we honour the 35th anniversary of that triumph by speaking with two of the Caps' legends from that era. First up is Willie Johnston. Wee Willie is enjoying being back in Vancouver for the celebrations and has been doing a lot of media, but we feel we bring you the best, most informative and most fun chat with the Scot that you'll hear this week. We look back at the Soccer Bowl triumph, his time in Vancouver, the infamous stories and other aspects of his long career. Next up is his old teammate and current Whitecaps President Bobby Lenarduzzi. The Duze talks about the current state of the Caps, will there be any new additions before the roster freeze, what can cure the scoring woes and a lot more. From days of old to current times, via a former 86ers and Whitecaps player, local lad Mark Watson. Watson is the current San Jose Earthquakes coach, and back in his hometown for a crunch match up between the two sides as they battle for that last playoff place in the West. Watson talks about the race, the challenge the Caps pose his team and the weirdness of this season's MLS schedule. And there's still time to bring you some audio from the Caps side to preview the San Jose game. We hear from head coach Carl Robinson, goalkeeper David Ousted, defender Andy O'Brien, and striker Erik Hurtado ahead of Wednesday's important match.
Episode 77 of "There's Still Time", the AFTN Soccer podcast, might not have as much flair and excitement as Vancouver Whitecaps' number 77 Pedro Morales, but it's jam packed with Caps analysis and training ground audio. We look back at the Portland horrorshow and try and figure out just what went wrong. Have the Whitecaps simply been figured out and how do they get out of their current funk? Do they need to change formation and will that see Kekuta Manneh played as an out and out striker? If Pedro Morales doesn't perform, then the Caps don't perform. We wrote about that in an article earlier in the week, and coach Carl Robinson weighs in with his thoughts. We also have more training ground audio and views from Robinson, David Ousted, Andy O'Brien and Darren Mattocks. And there's still time to look ahead to this weekend's game with DC United.
Disinfectant at the ready, the Great Unwashed are coming to town. Portland come a calling to BC Place on Saturday in a crucial Cascadia Cup clash with vital playoff points on the line. A Whitecaps win and they're sitting pretty, A Timbers win and Caps start to lose the momentum in the playoff race. Episode 76 of "There's Still Time" looks at what lessons, if any, we can take from the Whitecaps' 2-0 loss in LA and ponders whether a change of formation would help with the goalscoring woes. Or will that take a new addition and could he be on the way in the shape of Kei Kamara? We also look ahead to this weekend's big game hunt against the Timbers. Can the Caps give Will Johnson and co a right good face slapping? And there's still time for lots of training ground audio from Caps' coach Carl Robinson, goalkeeper David Ousted, defenders Jordan Harvey and Andy O'Brien, and strikers Kekuta Manneh and Darren Mattocks. Have a listen!
Intense was the word of the day at Whitecaps training on Tuesday and it was also the mood in the air as the players battled hard for over two and a half hours. There were hard challenges, verbal exchanges and an overall desire to get the team over the final stretch and into the playoffs. Episode 75 of "There's Still Time" is a special Tales From The Training Ground as we hear from Caps' head coach Carl Robinson, goalkeeper David Ousted, right back Steven Beitashour, midfielder Russell Teibert and striker Omar Salgado about a number of key topics. We look at the Caps' three clean sheets in a row; the team's current fifth place in the standings and playoff push; the intensity of training and why it's important it doesn't go too far; the upcoming LA game; the Julian Jenner rumours and whether there will be more additions before the roster freeze; and what are the chances of some more homegrown talent being added soon? All that, and there's still time to look at the Salgado handshake incident that had everyone in a tizzy over the weekend, and we hear from the player and coach themselves in full about it, expanding on my article on MLSsoccer.com. Have a listen!
It's Episode 74 of "There's Still Time", the AFTN Soccer Podcast, and we're in a celebratory mood. Not just because the Vancouver Whitecaps beat Sporting Kansas City to get back into the playoff places in the MLS Western Conference, but also because this podcast was recorded on the 25th birthday/anniversary of when AFTN first began as a fanzine back in Scotland on August 10th 1989. So a special day for AFTN and a special day for the Whitecaps, who got back on track and finally stopped drawing. We pick over the bones and the highs and lows of the game and hear audio from both locker rooms, both coaches and a number of the players. On the Whitecaps side we hear from head coach Carl Robinson, goalscorer Darren Mattocks and goalkeeper David Ousted. And from Kansas City, we have a good chat with their head coach Peter Vermes (one of the best coaches to chat to in MLS in our opinion), their penalty-saving goalkeeper Jon Kempin and All-Star defender Matt Besler. And there's still time to look at whether the Whitecaps should/will make any further additions to the squad before the roster freeze, the USL Pro town forums and Canada's potential World Cup bid for 2026. Have a listen!
The blunderbus(s) is loaded. All aboard for episode 73 of the AFTN soccer podcast. Your usual co-hosts Michael McColl and Steve Pandher look at the latest happenings in Vancouver Whitecapsland with a Dallas post game show. More home points dropped against the FUDs, that's five points dropped in the last two home games, which is simply not good enough if Vancouver Whitecaps want to be a playoff contender. We look back at the 2-2 draw with Dallas, the mistakes that led to the visitors' two goals and the inability to convert more than two of the 30 chances created. Who played well? Who had a game to forget? What's missing and what can be done to change things? We look at all that and more. We also hear post game audio from both locker rooms. For Vancouver, we have some frustrations from head coach Carl Robinson, goalkeeper David Ousted, goalscorer and goal misser Darren Mattocks and captain Pedro Morales. Dallas coach Oscar Pareja shares his thoughts on the game and we hear from rising (hopefully) Canadian star Tesho Akindele. And there's still time to get some tweets from our listeners on where the Caps need to strengthen as the number one priority and a look at the heartbreak that was in store for the U23s in the PDL Western Conference Final Four. Have a listen!
It's episode 72 of the AFTN soccer podcast and your usual co-hosts Michael McColl and Steve Pandher look at the latest happenings in Vancouver Whitecapsland. It's been a tough week for the Caps. Three games, two good roads draws but ultimately only two points from a possible nine and slipping out of the playoff places was a wasted opportunity. We look back at the road games at Toronto and Real Salt Lake and the inability to manage games, kill them off and come away with wins from a leading position. What's behind the blown leads and the amount of late goals being conceded? How can that be turned around? And what personnel needs to come in during the transfer window to help? Apart from our thoughts on the matter, we hear those of coach Carl Robinson, goalkeeper David Ousted, left back Jordan Harvey and striker Erik Hurtado from training this week. And there's still time to look ahead to the crucial game against Dallas at the weekend, where three points really are a must. Have a listen!
It's episode 71 of the AFTN soccer podcast and your usual co-hosts Michael McColl and Steve Pandher are joined by Harjeet Johal to look at the latest happenings in Vancouver Whitecapsland. We look back at the Goats' slaughter. Chivas came into BC Place and left with a 3-1 victory but what was the main cause? The heat, Jordan Harvey's sending off, switching off at the start of the second half or the inability to take their numerous chances created? We hear post game audio from Caps' coach Carl Robinson, goalkeeper David Ousted and Vancouver scorer Carlyle Mitchell. Looking ahead to the tough two game road trip coming up, we ponder what changes Robbo should make and discuss the big question of whether the current Whitecaps squad is good enough to make the playoffs as we look at what desperately needs strengthened in this summer transfer window and which current players should move on. And there's still time to chat about the other big happenings this week - the Caps' new USL PRO team, Marco Bustos accepting a call up to Chile and playoff heartbreak for the U16s. Have a listen!
Vancouver Whitecaps are back in training after their World Cup break and we're back with our second Caps' flavoured World Cup special podcast. We hear from Jay DeMerit about what it was like to play in South Africa for the US in 2010, whilst Bobby Lenarduzzi shares some memories of turning out in Canada's first ever Finals appearance against France at Mexico 86. Heading to Korea and Japan in 2002, Andy O'Brien tells us what it was like to be there as part of the Republic of Ireland squad and shares some of his favourite memories of watching the World Cup as a fan. So does Carl Robinson, who talks Italia 90, what it would have meant to him to play in a World Cup finals and why he wants his players to have that chance to play at the top level. And there's lots of Scotland/Wales/England banter too. But it's not all World Cup chat. The Whitecaps returned to training this week, keen to build on their recent good run of form but to also shore up their defensive lapses. We chat with Carl Robinson, Andy O'Brien and David Ousted about whether the World Cup break will be a momentum killer, how to stop the Caps' leaking goals and what it's like to be a defender in this modern age of going down at the first contact. And there's still time to play you some more snippets from something that makes every World Cup complete for us, "quality" official and unofficial World Cup songs, including Canada's official song for the 1986 World Cup. Have a listen!
Cascadian derbies are very much like buses. Not only do you wait for one and then two come along, but they're also much better when you're on top. And we're in a Cascadia Cup fervour right now at AFTN Towers, so much so that we are bringing you the first ever podcast to feature all four AFTN writers and podcasters! Recorded live during Wednesday's Whitecaps U23 PDL game, episode 66 of "There's Still Time" looks at the fallout from Saturday's draw with Seattle and we get the scoop and definitive answer on the big talking point to come out of the Sounders game from Caps' coach Carl Robinson. With another Cascadian clash coming fast, we also hear from Jordan Harvey, David Ousted and Jay DeMerit with their thoughts about what playing in these Cascadian derbies mean to them and how they compare to some of the other big derby games they've played in over the years. As part of that, the Vancouver-Seattle rivalry is really growing and Carl Robinson tells us why. And there's still time for the AFTN team to look ahead to the next derby clash this coming Sunday in Portland. How do the Timbers and Caps match up and who are the key players?
Episode 62 of the AFTN Soccer Podcast is a Vancouver Whitecaps v San Jose Earthquakes postgame show, and also a Canadian Championship preview! Going into May there were two monkeys on the Caps' backs. They still didn't have a win against Western Conference opposition and they just can't seem to win that elusive first Voyageurs Cup. Well, after San Jose, that's one monkey well and truly shaken and one to go. We look back at Vancouver's win over San Jose and the super quick start that saw them three up after the first 20 minutes. Who shone? What led to them coming out of the blocks so fast? And what does the immediate future hold in store for this team? We have audio from both locker rooms after the game. We hear from Caps coach Carl Robinson, goalscorer Kekuta Manneh, goalkeeper David Ousted and captain Jay DeMerit for Vancouver and two goal man Chris Wondolowski and former Whitecap Shea Salinas for San Jose. And there's still time to look ahead to Wednesday Canadian Championship semi final against Toronto. It's going to be a young Caps team that takes on TFC and we chat with two of them, goalkeeper Marco Carducci and midfielder Bryce Alderson about the game and more.
Vancouver Whitecaps preseason continues in full swing. We recap the games so far, including the latest one, a narrow 1-0 win over Victoria. We chat with head coach Carl Robinson about that game and also catch up with Erik Hurtado and David Ousted about their preseason camp so far. Have a listen!
Episode 23 of "There's Still Time", the AFTN podcast. We really wish it was 41 as we have the numbers 4 and 1 firmly implanted in our head right now. It's a very jubilant podcasting crew this episode in the wake of the demolition handed out by Vancouver Whitecaps to Seattle Sounders in Cascadia Cup action. We look back on the game, dissect the goals and ask where that performance has been for most of the season. It was a team performance but there were also some magnificent individual efforts and we take a look at the play of Kekuta Manneh, Daigo Kobayashi, David Ousted and Jun Marques Davidson. We hear some post game thoughts of Martin Rennie, Kekuta Manneh and Nigel Reo-Coker on the performance, the win and the team's playoff hopes and the three of them also chat with us, along with David Ousted, on whether the upcoming ten day break between matches will benefit or hinder the Caps. And there's still time to look ahead to Colorado and try and break down what could play out in an exciting run in with four teams jostling for two MLS playoff spots.
Episode 21 of "There's Still Time", the AFTN podcast, is a post game pod following Vancouver Whitecaps' miserable 1-0 loss to Real Salt Lake. Recorded at BC Place after the game, we pick over the bones of the Caps' playoff carcass. What went wrong? Why couldn't we beat a reserve team? And who needs to shoulder the blame? We hear audio from Martin Rennie, David Ousted and some very honest and sadly accurate post game comments from a clearly dejected and frustrated Nigel Reo-Coker. We also head into enemy territory and have a chat with Jason Kreis about the game, the successful RSL system of play and look ahead to their midweek US Open Cup final against DC United. Turning our attention back to the Caps, is there still some hope left? A little and we look at the scenarios that need to play out to see Vancouver make it to the postseason, as unlikely as that may seem just now. And there's still time to end the show on a happier note with a look at the Whitecaps Residency's start to the season and the recent Whitecaps media match that saw your two co-hosts square off in the Championship game. We've tried not to depress you too much, but it was hard after such a performance by the Caps and our closing song probably won't help!
Episode 18 of "There's Still Time", the AFTN podcast comes just in time for Vancouver Whitecaps to head out on the road again on a three game away trip. We look at what the Caps' might need to get from these three crucial games and hear the thoughts of Kenny Miller and David Ousted, who are very honest about what they feel the Caps need to go out there and achieve. We also look back at the draw with Chivas at the weekend. What can the Caps learn from that draw and how worried should we be about some of the deficiencies with the team? With the recent addition of Sam Adekugbe to the MLS squad, we discuss some of the current emerging talent and ask who will be next to make the step up? All this and there's still time to look at the murmurs surrounding MLS reducing the regular season to 28 games to cater for international dates.
Episode 17 of "There's Still Time", the AFTN podcast, is a San Jose post game pod. With the MLS Western Conference so tight right now, every game has a cup final feel about it and the Caps pulled out a vital 2-0 victory over San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday afternoon. We look at the main talking points from the match and hear some post game audio from Martin Rennie, Nigel Reo-Coker, Camilo and David Ousted. There's also still time to look ahead to the Colorado game, Kenny Miller turning out for Scotland against the Auld Enemy and to pick over some individual player performances. This episode was recorded at BC Place right after the San Jose game, so enjoy all the background noises and horrible acoustics! We like to think of them as ambience.
