More people in their 60s and 70s are staying on the job than ever before, and it's not always about the money. Today, Ryan digs into the real reasons retirees keep showing up to work. Working longer isn't automatically the wrong call. Sometimes it's exactly right. The real question is whether it's a choice or a fallback. That's worth figuring out before you assume the answer. Here's what we discuss in this episode:
The Three Pillars of My MusicianshipThis feels like a great way to end an era of the podcast. We're moving this weekend, the studio is being packed up, and this is the final time I'm sitting down in front of the camera here before everything moves to the new house and a completely new studio. It felt appropriate that this episode ended up being about something pretty fundamental: the three pillars that have underpinned almost everything I've done as a musician for the past 30 years. But I only really started thinking about them this way quite recently. While signing and packing copies of How to Transcribe this week, I noticed how many people had bought it alongside Bass Player's Guide to Sight Reading. Sitting next to those was The Bassist's Book of Scales and Arpeggios, and suddenly this very obvious connection appeared.Technique. Reading. Transcription. Those three things have been with me throughout my entire career.TechniqueScales, arpeggios, harmony, theory and the physical facility to actually execute the ideas I hear.I'm not practicing technique because I simply want to play fast. Even after more than 30 years of playing, there are still enormous areas of my technique and musicianship I want to improve that have nothing to do with speed or trying to impress anyone. ReadingReading gives me faster access to music. And despite having done it professionally for decades, it's not some innate ability that appeared fully formed when I pick up the bass. It's a skill I've worked incredibly hard on and one I still have to maintain. So for this episode I decided to test it.I pulled out two exercises from Bass Player's Guide to Sight Reading that I haven't played in years, spun up the play-alongs and took a shot at reading them cold while I was filming. I also break down what's actually going through my head while I'm reading: scanning ahead, anticipating fingerings, deciding where on the instrument to play something, thinking about tone, remembering mistakes that might need fixing after the take and — hopefully — getting comfortable enough with the notes that I can stop thinking exclusively about reading and start thinking about music.TranscriptionThis might be the deepest pillar of all.Almost all of the vocabulary you hear when I play comes from decades of listening, transcribing, absorbing and repeating music.Transcription isn't just about writing somebody else's solo on a piece of paper. It's about immersion. It's how I've learned languages within music, developed vocabulary and continually found new inspiration. It's also probably the pillar I've neglected the most recently, and one I want to spend more time with again. The Work Never EndsOne of the things I love most about the greatest musicians I've been fortunate enough to know is that none of them seem to think they've arrived. The people whose playing seems almost impossibly developed still have lists of things they want to practice, sounds they want to explore and areas of their musicianship they want to improve. Those lists make up several lifetimes worth of work, and the common thread I've noticed among so many of my musical heroes isn't simply their ability. They love the work.In This Episode* The three pillars that have shaped my musicianship* Why technique isn't about simply playing faster* What reading music actually gives you* Why sight-reading is a skill I still actively maintain* Attempting to sight-read my own exercises years after writing them* Testing myself on a piece in 7/4* What I'm thinking about during a professional reading session* Why one or two takes matter in the studio* Thinking about sound and phrasing while reading* How transcription develops musical vocabulary* What I want to work on next* Why great musicians never run out of things to practice* Why loving the work might be the most important part of allThe Complete Bass Mastery BundleI've also bundled the three books that inspired this episode together for the first time:The Bassist's Book of Scales and ArpeggiosBass Player's Guide to Sight ReadingHow to TranscribeTogether, they represent these three different but interconnected areas of musicianship: technique, reading and transcription. Each book also includes its accompanying video masterclasses and play-along materials, so this is really much closer to a complete course than simply a collection of three ebooks. And with that, it's goodbye to this studio.Thank you to everyone who has watched and listened to the podcast from this room for the past two years. The next time you see me, hopefully within the next week or two, it'll be from the new space.More soon, Janek Get full access to Janek's Newsletter at janekgwizdala.substack.com/subscribe
Lead Pastor Josh Carstensen continues our series on Mark. Some things feel like they'll last forever. Like the life you've built, the people you love, and the plans you've made. But Jesus reminds us how fragile it all really is — not to fill us with fear, but to free us from holding too tightly to what was never meant to last. There's a surprising kind of hope that grows when you realize history is moving somewhere on purpose. Even when the world feels unsteady, when obedience is costly, or even when tomorrow isn't promised. The goal isn't to figure out the timeline. It's to live awake today. To loosen our grip on what fades, hold tightly to what endures, and be ready whenever the King returns.Thank you for listening to this message from Northwest Hills Community Church in Corvallis, Oregon, on August 9, 2026, at 10:30am. For some people, continuing to work is a choice. For others, it is a necessity, or simply the result of not knowing whether retirement is truly possible. Mark explores the financial, social, and emotional reasons why more Americans are remaining in the workforce well into their 60s and 70s. Tune in to hear how a strategy can help you determine whether you need to keep working, want to keep working, or are finally ready to step away. Here's some of what we discuss in this episode:
More people in their 60s and 70s are staying on the job than ever before, and it's not always about the money. For many, work provides purpose, connection, and a sense of routine that retirement simply doesn't replace. Let's dig into the real reasons retirees keep showing up to work. One of the problems in my life is when you are a different type of human. I'm saying this humbly..... My brain works differently versus others. And I'm successful. I've been adopted. Addicted. Abused. Imprisoned. The way my mind works, none of that was able to keep me down. Don't get me wrong. I got my ass kicked in every facet of life. It took people telling me I'm a piece of shit. It took me continuing to work. And guess what............ I started making money. I built businesses. Created a new life for myself. I don't surround myself with people that don't push to make me better. I worked with David Goggins a year before most people knew about him. Do you think he was nice to me? Nope. He told me I sounded like a lazy piece of shit. I needed that so I could get better. Most people get offended and mad at you when you tell them the truth. If you want to get better and keep winning, surround yourself with people that tell you the truth. Even if it hurts your feelings. They care enough to tell you the truth. “Send Coach John a message”I have found another legend - Nancy Lieberman (@NancyLieberman) shared this simple (and short) message - “Do the work even when nobody claps.” Remember this is coming from a Hall of Famer and someone (once again) is out there helping, encouraging, lifting others up from the journey she has been on. How awesome would it be if more people looked to do this to help others. Keep working towards great things, being our best along with making a difference with others along the way. Instead of tearing down others with actions and words (as there are way too many examples in today's world) all of us can do better. Part of that is doing things the right way - even if we don't get noticed. The applause shouldn't be the reason we are doing good things in the first place. Thanks for listening. You do not need a free afternoon—or an exhausting new marketing plan—to make meaningful progress with your book. In this episode, Penny Sansevieri and Amy Cornell break down how authors can use just 15 focused minutes to improve the parts of their marketing that keep working long after the timer stops. They start by celebrating Penny's new release, Think Local, Sell Global, then get straight to one of the biggest traps authors fall into: confusing constant activity with actual momentum. Posting randomly, scrolling for ideas, or trying to “do all the things” may feel productive, but it rarely builds the visibility, trust, and reader connection that lead to book sales.Instead, Penny and Amy share a smarter question to ask before you spend your time: What can I improve today that will still be helping my book next week, next month, and three months from now?You will hear practical, high-impact ways to strengthen your book's discoverability and conversion in short, manageable bursts. From tightening the opening lines of your Amazon description and reviewing your categories and keywords to refreshing your author bio, improving your website, adding A+ Content, and checking what readers see inside your Look Inside preview, these are the book marketing assets that can quietly do more of the selling for you. They also talk about the long-game power of email marketing, how to reconnect with a quiet newsletter list, and what to say when you are convinced you have “nothing to send.” Plus, they share realistic 15-minute, 30-minute, and 60-minute marketing plans to help you stay visible between launches without burning yourself out.If your book marketing has felt scattered, time-consuming, or impossible to keep up with, this episode will help you refocus on the small improvements that create a much bigger payoff.Send us your feedback!Preorder Think Local Sell Global and claim your free Local Buzz Blueprint, a customized local visibility plan with personalized outreach ideas, pitch angles, and ready-to-use marketing tools built around your book and community! On today's show, host Esty Dinur celebrates Juneteenth, “America's second Independence Day,” with Dr. Timothy Golden. They talk about the symbolic importance of this federal holiday and how the US still struggles to make freedom meaningful for Black people. Juneteenth was made a federal holiday in 2021 after decades of campaigning by former teacher Opal Lee. Dr. Golden says that Juneteenth becomes “hollow” when we juxtapose the recognition of emancipation with Congress's inability to pass meaningful police and voting rights reform. The spirit of celebration is “neutralized” by the treacherous and tragic reality that enslaved Black people in Texas were kept enslaved after emancipation and the bad faith of our federal institutions who will not pass legislation that would support symbolic celebrations like Juneteenth. In the wake of emancipation, Dr. Golden says that we think of freedom too narrowly. He points to the work of Reconstruction that was ultimately undercut in the way that racial terror continued under state law. He says that full democratic participation continues to be deferred for Black Americans because of mass incarceration and voter suppression. They also discuss Dr. Golden's experience as an actor, the “white gaze,” and the philosophy of Ida B. Wells. Timothy J. Golden is Visiting Professor of Philosophy at Whitman College in Walla Walla, WA. His areas of philosophical specialization are Africana Philosophy (African American Social and Political Thought, Critical Race Theory, and Black Male Studies), Philosophy of Religion, and 19th and 20th Century European Philosophy. His books include Frederick Douglass and the Philosophy of Religion: An Interpretation of Narrative, Art, and the Political (Lexington Books, 2022), and Racism and Resistance: Essays on Derrick Bell’s Racial Realism (State University of New York Press, 2022). He is also a lawyer with more than 20 years experience concentrating in criminal defense, and he is an actor in local theater with solo performances in the stage plays Thurgood (portraying Thurgood Marshall) and How I Learned What I Learned (portraying August Wilson), and performances in Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice (Shylock), The Winter’s Tale (Leontes, King of Sicily), and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Peter Quince). Tim earned his Juris Doctor from the Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University and his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Memphis. Why Every Entrepreneur Should Travel (Even If You Keep Working)
On this special Pentecost Sunday, we reflect on the incredible blessings God has poured out on this church family—from humble beginnings in an apartment gathering to this beautiful new space. But today's message asks a crucial question: “Whose accomplishment is it?” Pastor shares a powerful personal story about his dad running an ultra-marathon—a reminder of the hard-earned sense of accomplishment we feel after doing something difficult. But in moments of visible success, we're warned to be on guard against the subtle temptation of pride. The truth is: every victory, every step forward, every act of faith—we owe it all to God.

This investor built a multimillion-dollar real estate portfolio with low-money-down loans and little cash-to-close. Thanks to his smart “rinse and repeat” strategy, he's quickly scaled from zero to 13 rental units in just four years, all while collecting thousands of dollars of cash flow a month. He would have never been able to get to this place if he hadn't followed a strategy many investors are too scared to try. Mike Johnson knew the best way to take bigger career risks was to have a backup plan. The ultimate passive income plan? Rental properties. But he didn't want to put 20% to 25% down on each property he bought, so he started where many investors do—house hacking. Four years later, he's continued his repeatable house hacking strategy, purchasing a new property every year, living in one unit, and renting out the others. This has allowed Mike to build a portfolio worth $3.4 million in just four years while buying in B+ or A-class neighborhoods and taking home a healthy amount of cash flow. But he has dealt with his fair share of headaches—squatters, non-paying tenants, and a lot of purple paint. Mike still says investing has been a massive win for him, and you can repeat his same strategy! In This Episode We Cover: How to start investing in real estate with little money using the house hacking strategy Why your primary residence IS an investment (and a phenomenal one at that) The biggest mistake Mike made that led to him buying a property with a squatter in the unit The new 5% down multifamily loan you can use to buy bigger, better, more expensive properties The cash flow AND appreciation market Mike is bullish on (and keeps investing in) When to self-manage vs. hire property management for your rentals And So Much More!
