Today's episode is with Jane Davis, the Director of UX Research and UX Writing at Zoom. She previously led UX Research and Content Design at Zapier, and managed the growth research team at Dropbox. Throughout the episode, Jane tackles the thorniest customer development questions and walks us through the end-to-end research process in incredible detail, covering everything from clarifying your goals and asking the right questions, to selecting participants and synthesizing insights. We start by going through how she applies her playbook in the early-stage startup context — when you're shipping the first version of your product and don't yet have the resources to invest in a full research team. We also dig into challenges such as deeply understanding the problem you're solving, taking on a competitive or a greenfield market, and figuring out willingness to pay. We also get into best practices for prototyping and iterating, as well as some of the common roadblocks startups face later on, including how to build for multiple users and what to do when people aren't excited about your product or using it frequently. Whether you're talking to potential customers before you start a company, or are looking to get better feedback from your current users, there's tons of insights in here for founders, product-builders, and design folks alike. Here's the book Jane mentioned in the episode: Just Enough Research by Erica Hall. We also recommend checking out Jane's recent article: What's the point of a UX research team? Chris Davis' 2021 season is coming to an end before it began after getting knee surgery, a talk about Ravens number retirements, and a Starting 5 of Sports Documentaries we would love to see.
JP Finlay, Mitch Tischler and Pete Hailey took in Washington's rookie minicamp over the past few days, and now they're here to pass on everything they learned. First, though, they react to the team signing safety Bobby McCain, another veteran who could start come Week 1. Then, it's camp observations time, as they give their initial thoughts on everything from Sammis Reyes to Dyami Brown to who's wearing the best number to Antonio Gandy-Golden. Once they go through various conversations based on the action, Pete gives another cat update (a disheartening one, too) and then they toss to Mitch and Pete's interview with Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops. In that chat, Stoops explains why Washington fans will fall in love with Jamin Davis as well as why he's perfect for a franchise that's trying to change the culture. If you like podcasts where there's some deep analysis about a red line that was on the field and there's also a debate about whether Mitch's "notes" that he stores in his head are really notes, then this is the episode for you.
Tuesday started with some bad news around LeBron James and his injured ankle. L.A.'s star will miss the next two games - at least - after feeling real pain against the Raptors over the weekend. And these aren't just any games, either. Thursday against the Clippers, Friday vs. Portland in games that could go a long way towards determining if the Lakers finish in the 5th, 6th, or dreaded 7th spots in the playoff race. Seven means the play-in mini-tourney, which is a spot nobody wants to be in. The day did improve, though, as A.D. hosted what had to be the among the greatest failed Reddit AMA's in Reddit AMA history, filled with trolls and the type of rampant immaturity we find wildly entertaining. Yes, the hosts are children. All that, and talk of L.A.'s supporting cast. Who do you trust right now? HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: LeBron is out. What does it mean for the fight to stay in the top six? Besides the obvious (Davis), who will face the most pressure to play well while James heals? Do the Lakers have the firepower to endure if he misses more than a couple games? SEGMENT 2: Markieff Morris has been godawful of late. Like, catastrophically bad. Can he recover in time to contribute in the way he did last postseason? What about the rest of the supporting cast? Who would you trust to play well once the playoffs come? SEGMENT 3: We break down that most glorious failure of a Reddit AMA, and answer a critically important question raised among the thousands asked: Would you rather fight a Lebron-sized duck, or 100 duck-sized LeBrons? After seemingly fixing the broken mechanics of Gary Sanchez, who has been arguably the best hitter in baseball this spring, Trevor is taking a crack at an even bigger challenge: Chris Davis. Davis, 34, was once one of the most feared bats in the game, most notably in 2013 when he crushed a whopping 53 home runs and drove in 138. However, since signing a massive deal to stay with the Orioles in 2016, he's become a shell of his former self. With two years remaining on his seven-year contract, can Plouffe find the cure for "Crush" Davis?

SPLIT PICKS returns to examine two films that find the Coen Brothers at their cruelest and their most compassionate When two writers selected two separate Coen Brothers films to write about within in a matter of days of each other, the coincidence made for the perfect reason to resurrect Split Picks, the first podcast series Split Tooth Media produced. Looking at two wildly different Coen Brothers films, the dark romantic comedy Intolerable Cruelty (2003) and the fictional folk music biopic Inside Llewyn Davis (2013), host Craig Wright, film scholar Frankie Vanaria, and filmmaker Steve Collins discuss how the Coens work with genre, how they weave film and music together, and whether they are at their strongest in comedies or dramas — or if there's a distinction between the two at all. Head to www.splittoothmedia.com to read Steve's and Frankie's essays about "Inside Llewyn Davis" and "Intolerable Cruelty."
