Linedy Genao - After receiving her bachelor's degree in Business Administration at the University of Connecticut, she began a career in banking. However, after receiving a message encouraging her to audition for the first open call of Gloria & Emilio Estefan's On Your Feet, her life changed forever. With only high school theater experience, Linedy landed her first Broadway-bound show, On Your Feet, and hasn't stopped since! Linedy has continued to rise through the ranks, most recently as the Alana/Zoe understudy on Dear Evan Hansen prior to its Broadway closing and on its first national tour. She was also recently named in Variety's “10 Broadway Stars to Watch” list. Kris Carrasco is a genderqueer, Latino-American artist hailing from the Appalachian mountains of western North Carolina. Born to immigrant parents, his first taste of the stage was seeing Jennifer Lopez star in the hit movie Selena, and through the incredible power of representation, a flame was lit. Kris' love of storytelling stems from the belief that as artists, we are the storytellers of the human experience and that it is our duty to record humanity (and our experiences with it) as diversely and specifically as possible with a 21st-century anti-racist lens on everything. Kris' greatest hope is that anyone that comes to a performance of theirs leaves with a greater sense of empathy for themselves, their community, and most importantly those who've lived experience is different. SUEÑOS tells the untold story of three generations of a Mexican-American family and their pursuit of the American Dream. The story primarily focuses on the viewpoint of protagonist, Ali Viramontes,  and his journey to becoming a world renown composer. Juilliard is his one-way ticket and he won't let anything stop him, even if he has to sacrifice those close to him. Obstacles become too challenging to overcome and seems there's no other way, but to continue the cycle that tore down his family's dreams. This original, contemporary musical celebrates Latiné/Latinx people and cultures, and weaves their stories into the fabric of the American Musical Theatre.

The newest directions in 21st Century trumpet performance are being explored and defined by Courtney Jones, an award-winning Bach performing and recording artist who has also emerged as a leading figure in contemporary performance and pedagogy, conducting, and service to inner-city youth through music outreach programs. An artist who transcends stylistic boundaries and in high demand as a clinician and adjudicator, Courtney has performed with classical ensembles and orchestras throughout the United States, internationally, and has won multiple solo awards and accolades through regional and national trumpet competitions. This journey began in Jones' hometown of Columbus, Georgia. While earning his Bachelor of Music degree at Columbus State University, Courtney performed with various Columbus State University ensembles and recorded with artists such as Jens Lindemann, Joseph Alessi, John Bruce Yeh, and the Columbus State University Wind Ensemble under the Naxos Music label. While completing his Master of Music degree in Trumpet Performance at Shenandoah Conservatory in Winchester, Virginia, Courtney studied under the instruction of J. Carlton Rowe, former Principal Trumpet of the “President's Own” United States Marine Band, Craig Fraedrich of The U.S. Army Blues, and performed as Substitute Principal with the Loudon Symphony Orchestra of Leesburg, Virginia. He also had additional studies with Steve Hendrickson of the National Symphony Orchestra Courtney conducted his doctoral studies at UCLA under the instruction of international soloist and former lead trumpet of the Canadian Brass, Jens Lindemann. During his time at UCLA, Courtney worked as a Teaching Associate for lecture courses and provided weekly lessons for university trumpet students under the direction of Lindemann. Winner of a Gluck Fellowship, Jones was then selected as the conductor of the UCLA Brass Ensemble during the latter part of his residency. His musicological research during this period explored 21st Century ideological and transcendental concepts of performance practice focusing on a lesser-known contemporary work of composer Frank Ticheli, The First Voice for Solo Bb Trumpet. The intention of this dissertation was to broaden the technical capabilities of 21st century performers and shed light on the ideological and philosophical foundations of Ticheli's composition. While the study is largely analytic and interpretive, the main purpose and goal is to help modern trumpet players develop more confidence in performing Ticheli's music and other contemporary compositions in related genres. Before completing his doctorate, Courtney was appointed as the Visiting Assistant Professor of Trumpet at the Voxman School of Music at the University of Iowa. During his two-year residency Jones served as the Principal Trumpet for the Iowa Faculty Brass Quintet, taught Graduate Brass Pedagogy and Literature, and served on recital and graduate committees. He was asked to lead the University's top performing Jazz Ensemble (director on leave) and produced an engaging performance concert by the University's Brass Ensemble (which had previously been inactive for a number of years) to showcase the importance of Brass Bands as an engaging training ground for solidifying technical and pedagogical facility for brass players. In addition to his applied obligations, Courtney performed with Orchestra Iowa, the Dubuque Symphony, and gave solo performances with both the Cedar Rapids Municipal Band and New Horizons Band. One of which was the Midwest Premiere of Kim Scharnberg's Travelogue for Eb Trumpet. Besides performing with well-known jazz and popular artists, he has shared the stage with famous artists or groups such as Kenny Burrell, B.B. King, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Rihanna, Lalo Schifrin, Vanessa Williams, Boy George and The Culture Club, Jennifer Cox, and Stevie Wonder. In addition to his solo performance career, Courtney has performed with the Golden States Pop Orchestra, the Southeast Symphony Orchestra, the Macao Orchestra (China), the Pasadena Orchestra, the Debut Orchestra, the Inspiravi Chamber Orchestra, the Gateways Festival Orchestra, the Orchid City Brass Band, the Oslo Philharmonic (Norway), the Long Beach Opera, the Chamber Singers of Iowa City, the Salt-River Brass Band, the Gateways Brass Collective, and most recently had his Carnegie Hall and Metropolitan Art Museum performance debut this past May in New York. His feature film and television credits include music performed for “Glee,” “Notes from Dad,” “Cougar Town,” and “Criminal Minds” among other productions listed under the media tab of his website. Prior to his appointment at Florida Atlantic University as the Assistant Professor of Trumpet & Artistic Director of Jazz and Chamber Ensembles, Jones was a Lecturer of Music at Columbus State University while recording his Solo CD project, “Between 2 Worlds,” at the Joyce and Henry Schwob School of Music. Between teaching and solo performing engagements, Dr. Jones has and continues to promote music education and instrumental performance in inner-city schools through the Music Outreach Program at UCLA, The Harmony Project of Los Angeles, Trumpets 4 Kids in Dallas, Texas, and the Nat King Cole Generation Hope, Inc. Each of these programs offers schoolchildren art-in-education opportunities. These programs are essential because they provide underserved, inner-city students, and communities with musical training and mentorship that would otherwise be inaccessible.

She is a freelance AEA stage manager and recently completed her PhD dissertation at the University of Illinois. Her dissertation, “The Quest for Professionalization: A 20th Century Cautionary Tale for United States Stage Managers,” focused on reclaiming stage management history while investigating the field's current challenges through a historical lens. Her past stage management credits include: Illinois Shakespeare Festival, Knoxville Opera, La Jolla Playhouse, Lamb's Players Theatre, Long Beach Opera, San Diego Repertory Theatre, and Tennessee Repertory Theatre. Editor's Note: The interview implied Dr. Scheier was the only person with a PhD in Stage Management. This is incorrect. Dr. Tracey Catherine Cattell recently got her PhD on British Stage Management history, looking at British promptbook notations. Sue Fenty, current faculty at DePaul University has a PhD from an Australian University and her dissertation was on modern day stage management and working Internationally.

Babatunde Akinboboye, the HipHopera Guy, joins us in an eye opening episode of Open Deeply. While Babatunde weaves operatic excellence seamlessly with hiphop and trap beats, you can see that he brims over with next level passion and joy. You would never suspect the intense struggle that he has overcome across his life. While his early childhood was filled with love and cuddles, it brutally shifted to one of physical abuse, a struggle with undiagnosed ADHD while feeling lost, depressed and lonely. But soon, Babatunde was kidnapped out of this emotionally unbearable situation by a benevolent family intervention leading to new opportunities, especially in music. However, the struggle didn't end there. Once in the U.S., he contended with racism and the experience of being othered, not just in school, but later from the international opera establishment despite its self-assessment of being evolved and civilized. Clearly, not so much. But neither struggle nor obstacle has ever blocked Babatunde for long. Eventually, he, along with the Black Opera Alliance, stood up against the old school opera establishment and he broke free from their stagnant rules when he launched his hiphopera style which has been embraced by ever growing fan base and the media. Please join us for another amazing life story on Open Deeply. Towards a New Opera! Ep 4 | Dr. Naomi André - Ways of Seeing // Black Opera created by Alexander Gedeon design by Yuki Izumihara a co-production of Long Beach Opera & Social Convention --- for mature audiences --- This week author and scholar Dr. Naomi André joins us to discuss the continued use of blackface in 21st century opera, opera in South Africa, and all of the cognitive dissonances of race in American opera today. Dr. André is the author of “Black Opera: history, power, engagement.” Towards a New Opera! is a new podcast intended to engage discussion with diverse artists on the expanding possibilities of new American opera. What does a new opera look and sound like if classical music is not treated as a culturally 'superior' form? How can conceptual artists from outside the field be engaged in the 'public dreaming' of new approaches? Each is a ‘message in a bottle’ — with the dream of awakening new connections across vast cultural seas." Alexander Gedeon is a stage director and performer born and based in Los Angeles, working primarily in the field of contemporary opera. He is currently Long Beach Opera's Minister of Culture. — The Towards a New Opera! intro/outro theme is an interpolation of Aretha Franklin's 'Amazing Grace' with Philip Glass's 'Dance No. 1'. — RABBIT HOLES: The title of this episode is partially borrowed from the John Berger book and mini-series “Ways of Seeing” from 1971. On Episode #17 of “CAN YOU HEAR ME, LONG BEACH? "Arts" can be a pretty daunting, dandy world, rife with black ties and velvet ropes. At the beginning of this, National Arts Month, we spoke with two groups looking to make their particular corner of the art world more accessible, more understandable and more fun. Long Beach Opera is hosting a Divalicious Drag-Off on Sunday at Hamburger Mary’s. Opera singers will be paired with drag queens to perform as teams: the Opera Diva will first perform an aria, followed by a lip-synced number by the Drag Queen (think “Un Bel Di” followed by “I Will Survive”) to be judged on originality and fabulosity. We spoke with LBO's executive director Jennifer Rivera and singer Joanna Ceja about the show. We asked Rivera how the search for a new artistic director is going. We asked Ceja to sing. They both obliged. Next, artist inhabit a sometimes mysterious world of creation and cleaning supplies. To wipe away a bit of the mystery, encourage a dialogue with the public, not to mention a chance to spend some art dollars in town, the Arts Council of Long Beach has put together Open Studio Tours. The Council's Tina Burnight spoke with us about this four-weekend event Oct. 5 – Oct. 27 that features artists all over Long Beach opening their art studios to the public; some studios are inside the artists’ homes (so it’s kind of like a home and garden tour!), some are in their garages, some are co-ops with several artists sharing space. It’s really a great way to see, in person, what local artists constantly chirp about, that there are just so many of them that call Long Beach home, and so few spaces (galleries) for them to show. The tour starts this Saturday and Sunday in the Zaferia/Eastside area with eight different destinations for tour-goers to check out. And, support your local artist!

Lorraine Burdick says she came late to her love for both her vocation and avocation. By day, Burdick is a librarian at Sno-Isle Libraries working in collection development. Away from the library, Burdick can often be found on the Seattle Opera stage as a member of the regular chorus. “I've been working in the library since I was in high school. I started as a page putting books away,” Burdick says.  “And I've worked in all the different levels of being a staff member at the library. I put myself through college, my undergraduate degree by working in the library.” After graduation, Burdick was working full time in a library. “… but I was not a librarian,” she says. “A few years and went and, ‘Boy, I really like this work. I want to be a librarian.’ So I've been in the library since I was very young, and decided when I was about 28 to become a librarian.” Similarly, Burdick says her early musical tastes ran toward musical theater, Harry Belafonte and the Kingston Trio, not opera. After happening upon a role with the Long Beach Opera in California, Burdick has been focused on the classic form. That opportunity turned out to be a gold-medal choice. Burdick decided to enter the solo category as a mezzo-soprano in the International Musical Eisteddfod in Llangollen, Wales. “(The) choir that I was singing with was going and I thought, ‘Well, I'm a singer, I will go and audition; I will go and participate in the solo competition,’” she says “I'd never done anything like that before. “… I won first place.” For the past 11 years, Burdick has been singing as a member of Seattle Opera’s regular chorus. “Whenever there is a show that has a full chorus, I'm in it, unless I'm not available but I usually I'm because I love it,” she says. Burdick says her interest and expertise in music pays off while performing her duties as a collection development librarian focusing on children’s materials, which she has been doing since about 1985. When reviewing additions to the library’s musical collection, she casts a critical eye. “I listen to see if it sounds like it's well-produced because a lot of these are self-published,” Burdick says. “I listen to how it's orchestrated, meaning what kind of instrumentation it has. I listen to how the person sounds, I listen to several of the songs on it to make sure they don't all sound exactly the same. And I look and see what they're singing about, and such.” Combining both vocation and avocation makes Burdick smile. “One of my favorite points is when I finish singing and there's this moment of silence before the audience starts to applaud, that is just, I just feed on that,” Burdick says. “That's just a joy.” And the library? “I really believe that the library provides many, many, many tools for people to live fully,” Burdick says. “Collection development gets to choose all the books, audiobooks, eBooks, DVDs; all the materials people can check out.” And she loves that, too. Stacy first worked with Christopher Murrillo (for longer than a day or two), this last December with the Troubadours "A Year With Out A Santana Clause".  Come to find out, their paths have been crossing for years!  Chris did props at the Long Beach Opera the first season Cindy and Stacy started there.  He worked a number of shows at East West Players before Stacy got there.  Chris' resume is full of theatre, opera, dance and TV productions all over the LA/San Diego area.  Hear how he was in the right place at the right time to become the set dresser for "Desperate House Wives" and a model building for the Oscars!   You can learn more about Chris at his web page: http://www.christopherscottmurillo.com   Attribution: ----more---- Logo: Ritzy Remix font by Nick Curtis - www.nicksfonts.com/index.html Music and Soundcello_tuning by flcellogrl / Licence: CC BY 3.0freesound.org/people/flcellogrl/sounds/195138/ Flute Play C - 08 by cms4f / Licence: CC0 1.0freesound.org/people/cms4f/sounds/159123/ "Danse Macabre - Violin Hook" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) / Licence: CC BY 3.0 LicensesCC BY 3.0 - creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/CC0 1.0 - creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/

Hi Friend, welcome to the blog and show notes for Episode 41 of Sally’s Performing Arts Lab Podcast. On Episode 41, my awesome guest is Stage Manager Cynthia Hennon Marino.  Her work with the ground-breaking immersive-devised opera, The Wreck, is just one of the things we discuss.   I’m your SallyPAL podcast host, Sally Adams. And every week I talk to people about creating original work for a live audience. Send an email anytime to Sally@sallypal.com. Because your ideas keep great conversations coming every week.   Check out sallypal.com/join for a cool free theatre resource called the Creator’s Notebook. You can also be a Sally ‘pal’ just by joining. There are other good reasons to join. Members get theatre cartoons, inside scoop on fresh productions, and entry into a larger creator community.   Stage Manager Cynthia Hennon Marino hit the ground running after getting an MFA in Stage Management from the College-Conservatory of Music. She went to New York and got hired almost immediately. She became a production assistant on the Broadway production of Equus starring Richard Griffiths and Daniel Radcliffe in 2008.   Cindy's journey started when she and her identical twin, Stacy Hennon Stone, did props for the musical Anything Goes their freshmen year of high school. The two now host a podcast called Twins Talk Theatre. The show is a series of great convos about working backstage.   Sister Stacy is a professional technical director in Long Beach, California. But neither twin planned on becoming a theatre professional. Cindy started by pursuing a degree in math. Stacy started in the business school. But theatre has powerful magnetic pull.   Each Hennon sister graduated from a different college with a theatre degree. Cindy’s sister headed to Southern California. Cindy followed when she found work with Palos Verdes Performing Arts.   Cindy and I talk about Long Beach Opera, the opera, Nixon in China, the LA opera, Hopscotch, and Portland Opera. She currently stage manages the opera, Faust, with the Oregon company. This latest venture features 3-D projections based on the work of sculptor John Frame.   The projections and projection mapping are a collaboration among designers Frame, Vita Tzykun, David Adam Moore, and Duane Schuler. It’s received a lot of attention from a previous reveal with Lyric opera in Chicago. Opera Wire called this production “a visual feast for the ages.”   But Portland’s production isn’t the most progressive thing Cindy’s done this year. In March, she and a small contingent with Opera Omaha embarked on a rare journey. The work they created is unique.   The Wreck is an immersive devised opera created in only 10 days. The Wreck borrows music and other bits from Slavik mythology and mermaid folklore. It features the writings of Anne Sexton, Alice Walker, and Adrienne Rich. It also floats on the music of Donizetti, Schubert, and Von Bingen. Ukrainian composer Mariana Sadovska adds new music creating an eclectic, otherwordly piece set in Omaha… sort of.   I know you’re going to enjoy what Cynthia has to say about stage managing and opera. There’s plenty of fresh ideas in the world of live opera performance. I can’t wait to see what she does next. Be sure and listen until the end of the interview for Concise Advice from the Interview, and Words of Wisdom from George.   Concise Advice from the Interview 7) Stage manage a show as opposed to a genre of theatre 6) Help the designers make a safe working environment for the performers 5) Focus on the show and focus on the people and everything else will fall into place 4) Go see opera! 3) Use physical cues to show you are open to a conversation 2) Experiment and have fun! 1) Think outside of the box   Thank you for following, sharing, subscribing, reviewing and joining. And thank you for listening. Download the SallyPAL podcast and listen on your drive to work. Or fall asleep to my recitatives like my sister does. Just be sure to let me know you’re out there.   Storytelling through plays, dances, opera, and other types of performances is the most important thing we do as a culture. That’s why I encourage you to share your stories. You’re the only one with your particular point of view. And SallyPAL is here with resources, encouragement, and a growing community of storytellers.   I want to help you tell your stories. All the stories ever expressed once lived only in someone’s imagination. Now… Think outside the box!
