Jesus consistently modeled dependence on the Father through prayer, obedience, and service. He came not to be served, but to serve others, ultimately giving His life for humanity. In the same way, believers are called to deny themselves daily, not through their own strength, but through the empowering work of the Holy Spirit. Through trials, hardships, and acts of service, God uses surrender to refine faith and produce spiritual maturity. This devotional reminds readers that sanctification is a lifelong process. Full Transcript Below: We Must Die Daily By: Emily Rose Massey Bible Reading: “…that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead” (Philippians 3:10, ESV). As a mom and wife, I am given countless opportunities to set aside my own wants and to sacrifice my love, time, and attention to my husband and children's needs. Pouring yourself out like that on a daily basis can sometimes be physically exhausting; I find myself praying for supernatural strength often! Yet, at the end of the day, even though I am tempted to wonder where my “me time” is, my heart is always full. This is when I begin to see more clearly what the Apostle Paul meant when he said: “I die daily.” The Biblical principle of dying to yourself has always been true, but I didn’t always live it or even understand it. Becoming a stay-at-home mom has challenged me in more ways than I can count in the area of putting others before myself, and I am always learning and finding that it is truly more blessed to give than to receive. As Jesus’ disciples, we are called to follow Him. That was Paul’s mission in life – to imitate Christ. And it is what he and the rest of the apostles literally gave their lives to preach to the world through their words and actions. We may not ever get the honor to literally die for Jesus Christ because of our faith in Him, but by God’s grace, we can imitate His selflessness every day. The apostle Paul emphasizes his great desire to join Christ in His suffering and become like Christ in his daily dying of self: “…that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead” (Philippians 3:10, ESV). Intersecting Faith and Life: To be able to imitate Christ and enjoy this kind of fellowship with Him, we must look to Jesus as our example. Even though Jesus was God in the flesh, He still leaned upon God the Father for everything He said and did while He walked this earth. Jesus would rise early to pray and seek God for His will for the day. In addition to seeking God in prayer, Jesus obediently submitted Himself to the will of the Father, even unto death. Each day, we are faced with the temptation to satisfy our flesh and go outside the boundaries of God’s perfect will. We discover what that will is when we read the Bible and study it for ourselves to learn God’s ways. We are not perfect, but thankfully, Jesus was, and because of His sacrifice on the cross, we have been given the precious gift of the Holy Spirit as born-again believers. The characteristics of Jesus’ death should be the characteristics of our lives: humility, sacrifice, and glory to God through disciple-making. Ultimately, Jesus did not come to be served, but to serve others (Mark 10:45). Jesus ministered to thousands upon thousands of people during His time here on earth. John 22 tells us that if all the things Jesus did were written down, the entire world could not contain the books that would be written! Dying daily definitely isn’t easy, but it is worth it because Jesus promises us that whoever loses his life will find it and find it abundantly (Matthew 10:39, John 10:10)! But remember, we cannot die daily in our own strength, friends. The Holy Spirit is who empowers us to choose God’s way through the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). With each passing day, by God’s grace, we mature and cultivate a life worth dying for, a life found in Christ alone! Living like Christ’s dying is a continual process of humility and sacrifice. May God empower us to die daily and choose others above ourselves. Our flesh wants nothing to do with denying it of anything. We don’t want to experience suffering. But it is in those moments of dying to self that you become more like Christ. What are the difficulties and trials you are currently facing? Ask the Lord to help you embrace those trials and sufferings so that you may grow closer to Him. Let us seek to look like Christ’s dying by learning how to be humble and sacrificial. Instead of resisting those difficult times, ask the Lord to help you to find great opportunities for sanctification to be conformed to the image of Christ Jesus and lean into His grace through the trial. In this powerful message, Pastor Shirley Albritton cuts through religious ritual to expose the true call of New Covenant worship: a living sacrifice. She makes a clear distinction between the Old Testament's material offerings and the radical, life-altering submission God requires today. God doesn't want just some of you; He wants all of you—your mind, body, and soul—set apart and dedicated for His use. This deep dive will challenge you to examine your motives for "sacrificing" and see if you are truly pleasing the Kingdom of God. Main Points for a Living Sacrifice: -- The Lord Wants You, Not Your Substitute: Many believers substitute easy, material offerings (like a Daniel Fast or giving up TV) for giving God their whole life. God is a non-material Spirit, and true worship is giving Him your entire self, not just objects. -- Fasting is for Dying to the Flesh, Not Moving God: We must correct the wrong purpose for fasting. It is not a magical formula to get God to move or secure a blessing. Its true purpose is to bring your flesh under control and check the "I, the me, and the my" in your daily life so you can better hear from God. -- It's Your Reasonable Service: Romans 12:1 calls presenting your body as a living sacrifice your "rational, logical, intelligent act of worship" because of what Christ, the ultimate living sacrifice, has already done. It is the least you can do. -- Guard Against Sophisticated Arguments: The enemy uses subtle, sophisticated arguments (like justifying indulgences or pleasures) to keep you from true submission. These arguments are designed for self-pleasure and self-gratification, which keep you from being a peculiar, set-apart people. -- Avoid the Worldly Harvest: If you sow to the flesh, you will reap corruption; if you sow to the Spirit, you will reap life everlasting. Every worldly sacrifice you make for personal gain (like overtime for a hobby or dieting for carnal reasons) comes with a harvest. Are you equally dedicated to the things of the Kingdom? -- Die Daily to Self: Following Paul's example, we are called to die daily to our own will, desires, and worldly temptations, letting the Word of God "cut" you so the poison of the flesh can bleed out and heal, rather than slapping a band-aid on it. The number one killer of relationships is: SELFISHNESS Selfishness: Being concerned with one's OWN interests above the interests of OTHERS. Six Signs of Selfishness: -Pursuing personal gain over the gain of the relationship. -Not attending to the needs of others. -Feeling entitled to more than what the other person can offer. -Lack of empathy. -Its my way or the highway. -Avoiding sacrifice. James 3:16 For where there is jealousy and selfish ambition exists, there is disorder and every evil thing. The results of selfishness: -Distance—people do not want to be around you -Resentment—those closet harbor frustrations with you -Disagreements—small solvable problems turn into massive fights -Doubt—trust is questioned “Selfishness has never been ADMIRED.”—C.S. Lewis Selfishness is a CANCER that must be intentionally REMOVED from a relationship for it to survive. Philippians 2:1-5 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 1. Remember how God REDEEMED you. Philippians 2:1-2 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like- minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Romans 12:3 Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. Selfishness is SELF-IDOLATRY. When I FOCUS on His grace, I can't help but feel GRATEFUL. When I FORGET His grace, I can't help but feel ENTITLED. 2. Seek to SERVE others. A perfect marriage is two selfless people working hard to out-serve the other person. Philippians 2:3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, The opposite of being selfish is being a SERVANT. I Corinthians 10:24 No one should seek their own good, but the good of others. When is the last time you intentionally served someone you loved? Selfishness is a DRAIN in the relationship. Service is a DEPOSIT in the relationship. 3. We are instructed through scripture we must die daily. We have to choose daily to crucify the old man, our old ways of thinking and doing. Old things have passed away and all things have become new. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

On our journey through the Beatitudes, we have come to the place where many people sitting in the pews will most likely get off the bus. When Jesus says that we are blessed when we are persecuted, many begin to squirm in their seats, and their minds begin to go off into never-never land as they attempt to block out the truths of our faith journey. When you and I walk in the life that has been described in Matthew chapter 5, it's not a matter if we will be persecuted, but when.Jesus said that if the world hated Him it will also hate those of us who are following after Him. The darker and more distant our world gets from the life that Jesus calls us to live, we can expect the persecution to increase.  Here is where I believe comes the greatest falling away from the faith that the church encounters. It's that place where we become complacent and lukewarm. In our attempts to avoid persecution, we compromise on the foundational truths given to us in the Sermon on the Mount. All of the attributes of the Beatitudes culminate here at the crossroads of faith and persecution. Will you get off the bus or continue the journey in following Jesus Christ?
