People often have difficulty processing, or even talking about, emotions. In this segment, Carol Roberts, head of Young People's Services at Troy Public Library, suggests five books for kids and teens that can help readers explore various feelings. She calls the picture book "Goodbye: A First Conversation About Grief" (Madison & Ralli, 2023) a must-have for parents to help children deal with inevitable loss. "Evergreen" (Cordell, 2023), another picture book, tells how a squirrel learns to deal with fear. Two books are part of the "Read It Forward" program that gives free books to teens: "Elatsoe" (Darcy Little Badger, 2020) is the story of an Apache girl who explores her cousin's death in a town of gruesome secrets. The YA graphic novel "Hollow" (Watters & Boyer-White, 2022) retells the Legend of Sleepy Hollow set in current times. The final book, "Something Like Home" (Arango, 2023), portrays in verse the story of a Latina girl who is forced to live with her aunt after finding her parents have overdosed on drugs. Carol suggests this would be a helpful read for any youth in or facing foster care. For more details, stop by the main branch at 100 Second Street, or visit www.thetroylibrary.org. Elatsoe vive nesse ambiente levemente diferente do nosso. Hello, coven! We're back with a conversation about Trail of Lightning by Rebecca Roanhorse. There's some debate as to whether or not the book is young adult, but we enjoyed it regardless. Show notes below! Content warning: brief mention of sexual assault (24:55-25:40)  Why did we pick this book? J read Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse  when it came out with her book club. (patron/friend-of-the-show) Deanna said Trail of Lightning was also really good, and we're always looking to add more diverse voices to the podcast! Should we make merch with J's tagline “Chaos Ensues”? Recommend if you like… [read-alikes mostly, but also other media, film, tv, etc.]  The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline if you're interested in Indigenous stories about the end of the world. (We talk about The Marrow Thieves in episode 30) Reservation Dogs on Hulu which scatters in Indigenous stories and is set in the modern day Elatsoe by Darcie Little Badger, which we read quite recently (episode 57). It would be good for younger readers If you're into monster hunting stories, you'll like Trail of Lightning Also the film Mad Max: Fury Road  Buffy the Vampire Slayer K recently watched that movie San Andreas with Duane The Rock Johnson What is it with apocalypse movies/shows/stories and fingerless gloves? Libraries are crucial archives for keeping information and languages accessible for future generations. In the novel Kai listens to elders' testimonies – underscoring the importance of indigenous oral traditions Avatar the Last Airbender Trail of Lightning is book 1 of a series called The Sixth World. Book 2 is called Storm of Locusts and it's already out (published in 2019). Can't wait to see what happens next! From J: “It should be noted there has been some push back from some Indigenous groups about Trail of Lightning. I'll link to a couple of the articles I read about the issues, but the gist of it is that Roanhorse is not Navajo and she is not from a federally recognized tribe. I can't speak to these issues, but what I do feel like I can say is that a tribe being federally recognized should not be the only thing that makes someone Indigenous. The history of this country has shown us that much. Additionally, Roanhorse is half Black, and anti-Blackness abounds in every community – including Black communities. So I'm a little skeptical, but I'm also not Indigenous, so I can't speak to the issues of appropriation in any way, because I am not familiar with the cultural practices of the many many Indigenous tribes. Based on some of the critiques I read, perhaps if the book came with a content warning regarding the violence in the story, there would have been less pushback?” You can read some of the articles below if you're interested, and we'd love to hear your thoughts. Enjoy our presentation of Elatsoe, written by Darcie Little Badger, and published by Levine Querido. Imagine an America very similar to our own. It's got homework, best friends, and pistachio ice cream. There are some differences. This America has been shaped dramatically by the magic, monsters, knowledge, and legends of its peoples, those Indigenous and those not. Some of these forces are charmingly everyday, like the ability to make an orb of light appear or travel across the world through rings of fungi. But other forces are less charming and should never see the light of day. Seventeen-year-old Elatsoe ("Ellie" for short) lives in this slightly stranger America. She can raise the ghosts of dead animals, a skill passed down through generations of her Lipan Apache family. Her beloved cousin has just been murdered, in a town that wants no prying eyes. But she is going to do more than pry. The picture-perfect façade of Willowbee masks gruesome secrets, and she will rely on her wits, skills, and friends to tear off the mask and protect her family. This title has won numerous accolades, including Buzzfeed, Publishers Weekly, and NPR Best YA Book of 2020. Elatsoe is recommended for ages 13+. Tananarive Due's novella “Ghost Summer” takes place in the fictional town of Gracetown, Florida. Gracetown is the kind of small town where everyone knows everyone because the families go back to the town's founding. But Gracetown is different in one significant way: ghosts come out on hot summer nights. And those ghosts can only be seen by children. Now, most young boys and girls would run away from a town full of ghosts, but narrator Davie is not most kids. He's a budding ghost hunter, who can't wait for his summer among the spirits.  Recommended in this episode: Ring Shout (2020) and Elatsoe (2020) Up next: Justina Ireland's Dread Nation  Please rate and review us, or better yet, tell a friend.  Our social media is @MonsterWrote on Twitter and Instagram. Our email is monsterwrote@gmail.com. This episode was produced and researched by Lisa and Mel. Theme music is “Misconception” by Nicolas Gasparini, used with permission.
