Explore bitter beers with Midwest Coast, including ESBs, English Pale Ales, and IPAs that cater to evolving palates. 01:48 Beer Myth: What's a “girly drink” when it comes to beers? Katherine and Brian and their guests shatter the myth that some beers are “manly” and others are not.  07:32 Midwest Coast Brewing: Cameron Compton, founder of Midwest Coast, and Timothy Ficken, brewery manager, talk about what brought them together to Midwest Coast. They share the different beer trends that were emerging in their very different parts of the country, with hops being a central part of one brewer's background and almost completely absent from the other's. Cameron also discusses his time in the military and in the tech world and what compelled him to move with his wife to Chicago, where he had never lived before, and open a brewery with his sister. Cameron also explains how hop contracts work and why they're so brutal for brewers to work with. What is an English IPA and what is an ESB? Timothy explains the concept behind the “Extra Special Bitter” and how they developed an English Pale Ale in order to make a certain style more palatable – and marketable – for customers. Katherine brings up a conversation about whether the Western palate really is designed to handle hops (is it?) and Brian explores the idea of a person's palate changing as they grow older. What is hoppy and what is earthy? An EXTENSIVE debate ensues, including a confused Cody who doesn't know how to explain what he's drinking. 54:20 Beer Behavior: When is it okay for brewers to chase trends and when is it not? Katherine gives props to Cameron and Timothy for sticking to the styles they like to brew, which evolves into a discussion of the benefits of trend-chasing – as long as someone else is doing it. 1:01:48 Today's Featured Merchandise: Our amazing baseball hats, available in multiple styles and colors! Ordinary Bitter, Best Bitter, ESB and English Pale Ale are not the easiest style to find here in the USA. Fortunately in and around Ohio there are still some microbreweries being them with pride and English tradition. This month we travel up to Mansfield Ohio to talk with Carmone and Duncan MacFarlane to learn what goes into making a great ESB. Being this is our Halloween episode for the year, it is no coincidence that the Phoenix Brewery is housed in a former mortuary. Their resident ghost Charlie makes his presence known! Hopefully it is not too distracting a listen due to the clawing, shuffling noises, and bumps in the night that we picked up while recording. It was no doubt we were picking up something from the paranormal.

For Movies and Booze this week, Sean was joined by Dean McGuinness, Chris Wasser and Rachel Ryan with thanks to Marks and Spencer. Today's Pale Ales are listed below. Moosehead Pale Ale is an English Pale Ale of 5.0% A.B.V and is brewed in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada. Moosehead Pale Ale presents as pale straw gold beer with a solid white head. At 5% a.b.v., this beer is an incredibly easy drinking beer, but it has substantial complexity. It does not ‘punch the drinker in the face' with flavour, but it most definitely has many layers of flavour. Interstellar Pale Ale is an American Pale Ale by Outer Place Brewing brewed in Kildare and collaborating breweries. Interstellar belongs in the American Pale Ale style. Brewed with American hops – Cascade and Strata, this beer combines the essence of a West Coast IPA with a juicy New England IPA, but is brewed as an American Pale Ale (rather than as an IPA) – with an a.b.v. of 5% and a less assertive but notable hop bitterness.

Amongst climate problems, wealth inequality and the fall out of the bigot's referendum (Brexit) and what we do now that we have left Europe… we have three concurrent scandals at the top of public life – The Monarch – The Police - Government! Will you get our musical ‘Beer or BS' quiz all correct? (American Pale Ale) - 5.3% ABVWe absolutely love Sentinel, but it has a tendency to knock us for six when we fancy a few scoops with it sitting near the 7% mark. An idea was mused by our own Matt in the brewhouse to make a baby version of the beer; an all-Simcoe pale ale, with the hopping rate of an Augment beer. Sure enough, the result is It's Only Forever, named for another one of Scott's “isms” whilst he was running the canning line late last year. Super ripe stonefruits, fresh mango, and pineapple notes are a-plenty in this kickass pale ale at a seriously sessionable strength.

If you listened to or watched our last episode, you'll know that we tried to pod outside on the balcony to no avail, so for this episode, we headed back indoors. We grabbed two great beers - The City from Henderson, an English Pale Ale with a phenomenal story behind it, brewed to represent the beer that folks would have consumed a century ago; and Shubie, a raspberry sour IPA from Wellington, a fruity, tart, summer crusher. We discussed the recent campaign from Molson, #MakeItCanadianBeer, where they've attempted to solicit independent Canadian craft breweries to contribute to a case of beer to celebrate Canada Day today. Their sheer aggressively tone-deaf approach speaks volumes about both the company and the agency behind it, so we had a lot to say. We also tested out a new game, which we both kinda sucked at, but we're going to do it again with guests in future. Cheers! Classic English Style Pale Ale(Description courtesy of Beer Advocate) https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/styles/154/The English Pale Ale can be traced back to the 19th century and the city of Burton-upon-Trent, a place with an abundance of hard water, rich in calcium sulfate. As well as enhancing a beer's hop bitterness, this hard water helps achieve clarity. English Pale Ale can fall anywhere on the color spectrum between golden and reddish amber and should generally have good head retention. A mix of fruity, hoppy, earthy, buttery, and malty aromas and flavors can be found in the sip, not unlike a classic Bitter. Traditionally all ingredients are English in origin.-Color – Gold to Copper-Clarity: Chill haze is acceptable at low temperatures-Perceived Malt Aroma & Flavor: Low to medium malt aroma and flavor is present. Low caramel character is allowable.-Perceived Hop Aroma & Flavor: Earthy and herbal English-variety hop character should be perceived, but may result from the skillful use of hops of other origin.-Perceived Bitterness: Medium-low to medium-high-Body Medium-ABV: 4.4%-5.3%-Glassware: Pint Glass Examples (courtesy of Beer Advocate)(https://www.beeradvocate.com)Old Speckled HenGreene King / Morland BreweryEngland, United KingdomStyle: English Pale AleABV: 5.2%Notes: Old Speckled Hen is popular with ale drinkers up and down the country (England) and renowned for its unique character and consistent quality. The great British ale was first brewed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the MG car factory in Abingdon, Oxfordshire. It was even named after the factory’s old run around car which was often parked outside the paint shop. Spattered in paint, the car became known as the “Owld Speckl’d Un”. The eagle-eyed might even see the resemblance between MG’s logo and the Old Speckled Hen label!More than 35 years on, the great premium ale continues to be a finely balanced beer with a distinctive rich, malty taste and fruity aroma.DBA (Double Barrel Ale)Firestone Walker Brewing Co., California, USCraft Beer Storm interviewed David Walker on Episode # 50 - Check it out herehttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/episode-50-david-walker-of-firestone-walker-brewing-co/id1438117278?i=1000442533846Style: English Pale AleABV: 5%Notes: DBA—a.k.a. After last episode's adventures in Beer Asylum we decided to record this week's episode in the relative quietness of my flat (which worked for me as I'm incredibly lazy). We will probably record another episode at that fantastic shop in the future, but at a quieter time. This week we talked about quick fix diet tricks that you can do to lose weight, we looked at West Sixth Brewing (a Kentucky brewery), and we rank our favourite IPAs from England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales. The Beer Shrine in my flat (with some embarrassing Strongbow that we don't speak of beside it) Quick Fix Diet Tricks What makes quick fix diet tricks so satisfying? Their effectiveness or their ease? Probably a combination of both, this is not something exclusive to diet either, people love hacks, tricks, and shortcuts, that can instantly make a difficult task easier. It is important that I make this clear first, quick fix diet tricks are only effective when you have the big building blocks of diet and exercise in check. These quick fix diet tricks can help you to hit your targets a little easier, but they won't work alone. But now that we've got that out of the way we can get started. So here we go: Swap Cooking Oil for Cooking Spray (saves 120 calories) Drain beef mince while cooking can reduce fat by up to 50% (135 calories per 100g) Swapping fancy bread such as tiger bread for kingsmill (11 calories saved, but this can add up) Stop buying junk food and snacks during your weekly shop - Out of sight, out of mind Swap coke for diet coke (34 calories in coke, 0 calories in diet) Swap JD and coke for Gin and Diet tonic (200 calories saved) Learn 5-6 healthy meals and batch cook them before freezing Avoid beer on Monday to Friday (unless you are doing a podcast obviously) Beer of the Week: West Sixth Brewing This week we actually looked at three different beers from a Kentucky brewery called West Sixth Brewing  which was founded in 2012. We were experiencing these beers for the first time, and had bought them from a beer delivery service called Beer52. The three beers that we tried were: an IPA, a porter, and a wheat beer. The porter is called "Pay it Forward Cocoa Porter" and while I enjoyed it immensely, Todd was not a fan. Not because it was a bad porter, but because he dislikes porters in general. I know what he means, they are a very unpopular beer, and a surprising choice for a Kentucky based brewery. But this porter tasted excellent and is well worth a look, strong cocoa flavours along with the standard coffee taste, not particularly thick or thin, and while I wouldn't order 2 in a row, I'd be pleased with a pint of this. The IPA was decent, but a bit strong (7%) and rather bitter tasting. It reminded us both of an English Pale Ale rather than the lighter American hops that make American IPAs so delicious. This was not a bad IPA but it certainly wasn't our favourite. The final beer (which we actually drank first) was the Lemongrass American Wheat. Which was nothing like any wheat beer we'd ever had before! A look at the website has shown that it is a "non-traditional" wheat beer, and I would describe it best as a lager-like beer that has a strong lemongrass taste. It was nice, but when you buy a wheat beer you expect a wheat beer! So I was a little disappointed by that. Of the three, the beer that surprised me the most (in a good way) was the Porter, the Wheat beer was nice but not as good as the German or Japanese wheat beers we've had in the past (or even an American wheat beer like Blue Moon). The IPA was a little disappointing, but still a perfectly decent beer. I enjoyed West Sixth Brewings offerings and hope to see some more of them in the future. The Best IPAs of Britain & Ireland Obviously this list is subjective, and maybe you've got your own favourites but Todd and I were looking for our favourite IPA from England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.

Last week I was traveling for business in East Lansing, MI – but I was still able to squeeze in an interview with Quinn Sioma of ROAK Brewing Co. The atmosphere sounds a bit raucous at HopCat, but I was able to discuss 3 distinct and different ales with Quinn: Awesomesauce -an English Pale Ale with wheat, Blow Your Face Out – a Double IPA; and Live Wire, an American IPA. BTW – If you're a craft beer lover and get a chance to check out a HopCat – do it!
