Gracias.

"I have no claim to anything here save through her". These are the reputed words of one of the most famous knights in English history, William Marshal, describing his wife Isabel, daughter of Aoife and Strongbow. In honour of St Valentine's Day Dr John Marshall (Lancaster University) gives us the full story of Isabel de Clare — a fascinating noblewoman, whose life, inheritance and influence crossed multiple (shifting) territorial boundaries. Dr Marshall offers complex and sometimes poignant insights, explaining to us how, being "born to an English father from the Welsh March and an Irish royal mother, Isabel's life crossed geographic and cultural divides, though neither of these were as rigid as we tend to think.” Suggested reading: You can find details on John's publications at: https://lancaster.academia.edu/JohnMarshall The history of William Marshal , eds A. Happy St Brigit's weekend! (For links to Brigit content see below). Instead of Brigit we were eager to release an episode we recorded just before Christmas with the brilliant Dr Colin Veach, from the University of Hull, on the English colonisation of Ireland, which may be known to some of you as the Anglo-Norman Invasion. Today's episode mostly focusses on the English perspective of the conquest. Whether it was inevitable, how we should frame the events, English or Anglo-Norman etc. We talk Diarmaid Mac Murchada or in English, Dermot McMurrough and Strongbow, King Henry II and the bad King John, but we'll cover Rory O'Connor and other aspects in more detail in future episodes. We've an extra super short bonus episode which we will release next week on the initial propaganda that was released justifying the English invasion and how historians should approach the sources today. In 1170, the Norman Lord Strongbow landed an army in Ireland. The following day, he launched a deadly assault on the nearby city of Waterford. Before the day was out, Strongbow had not only conquered Waterford in a brutal assault but also made time for his wedding. This marriage changed Ireland forever.Discover how the marriage of Aoife, a seventeen-year-old, and Strongbow, a man in his mid-forties, altered the course of Irish history. I also explore how it elevated Aoife to one of the most powerful women in medieval Irish history. In addition, my supporters of "The Troubles" with Dr. Brian Hanley continues this week with part four, as we delve into the years 1970 and 1971. Picture the scene; a small village pub where a young couple are enjoying a quiet drink together before going to tell her parents that they're engaged to be married. They hear a low rumbling in the distance that gets steadily louder, to the point where their small wrought iron table starts to shake and the barely-twenty somethings grab their drinks (he a pint of Strongbow, she a delicate rosé from California.) All of a sudden, a sports car comes drifting around the tight corner spraying dust and pebbles all over the couple, cracking the wine glass and shattering one of the decades old front windows. The car screeches to a halt and a lithe, dirty blonde-haired man wearing leather pants, a sleeveless white tee, and shades alights, walks over to the couple, says "Push the envelope, don't sit on the fence!", retreats, climbs back into the driver's seat, and shouts "I'M IN LOVE WITH MY CAAAARRRRRRRRR!" before gunning it, spraying more pebbles, and a starlted vole, into the carnage he's already created. As the car speeds off into the shattered still of the countryside, the license plate "MEDW$" can just be made out as it shrinks to a dot and vanishes. If Randy were to title this episode, he'd probably call it "Don't sit on the fence" or possibly "Why didn't someone buy Rog' a rhyming dictionary?"Today's episode covers another Roger car song, this time from "Innuendo". That's right, we're covering "Ride The Wild Wind".NOTE: If you want to skip ahead to Randy and Kev's manifestations and the wheel spin, that happens at 36:03Thanks to everyone who tuned in to the last episode and left us some comments on Twitter, Facebook, and BlueSky! Introducing Jono Holt. Ten years ago he founded Otherway, the strategically-led studio where design and advertising work together to connect brands with a new generation of consumers. Forged from a background in advertising but with a desire to create omni-channel brands in a fast-changing digital world; Jono spotted the DTC trend early, looking to brands like Warby Parker in the states, going on to launch brands like Butternut Box, Psycle, Hylo, Cabinet, Moju, Lucky Saint and many more, including their own watch brand Farer. And in many ways, ten years on, Otherway have come full circle. Not only launching a new studio in San Francisco but playing a hand in a surprising amount of ads that you'll see on the London Underground. With brands like Strongbow, Deliveroo, Inches, Graze, Moretti, and Hayman's Gin all demanding a slice of Otherway's creative aptitude for first-class communications. For me this episode is a special one. The 100th episode. I spent four years at Otherway working closely with Jono and learning as much as I possibly could from him. An approach to brand strategy that is provocative, commercial, to-the-point and delivered with conviction without the fluff, time-wasting or jargon that you can find lurking in other agencies. He hasn't taught me everything but he's taught me a hell of a lot - and I'm lucky to count him among my mentors today. In this retrospective episode we look back at the past ten years in business and to the future, garnering his point of view on the world of brands today while looking at the opportunities in the market tomorrow. If you're interested in branding, advertising, agencies or the venture ecosystem then this one's for you. Enjoy.

The homies talk (in depth) about a missed chance of hanging on the American River many moons ago, real life cannon events and how Strongbow is the best commercially available cider on the market (suck it, Angry Orchard). No games because this one is all about that RIFT RAFT CHIT CHAT.
**This is the second of two episodes on the story of Irish people who fought in the French Resistance. Part I was released last week.**Few Irish people recognise the names Sr Katherine Anne McCarthy or Patricia O'Sullivan. However during the Second World War II they were among the dozens of Irish women who fought in the underground war against the Nazi occupation of France. The stories of these women are unbelievable. My guest in this episode, Dr David Murphy, from Maynooth University reveals the risks they took and the harrowing consequences for those who were caught. If you have family members who served in the Resistance get in touch with David at david.murphy@mu.ie.**I am currently working on a new series on the history of podcasting. I have interviewed some of the biggest names in podcasting and now I am looking for your input. I would be really grateful if you could complete this short survey on your experience as a listener at https://irishhistorypodcast.ie/listenersurvey.**
The struggle of the French Resistance against the Nazi Occupation of France remains one of the most famous chapters in World War II history. It has been immortalized in numerous film and books. However the story of the dozens of Irish people who served in the Resistance has been almost completely forgotten. In this podcast I interview Dr David Murphy from Maynoooth University who has researched the Irish people who served in the Resistance. While the writer Samuel Beckett is the most famous David reveals the forgotten history of other Irish volunteers and their experience of the war.**I am currently working on a new series on the history of podcasting. The history of the Great Famine naturally and understandably focuses on the death toll. However most people survived but in all too many cases their lives were changed by the horrors they had in endured. This episode focuses tells the previously untold story of one woman's struggle during the Great Hunger. I first came across Jane Cullen buried in the records of a 19th century hospital and she immediately intrigued me. After further research I was able to find a surprisingly large amount of detail about her life in other institutional records. Jane's story will give you a unique insight into survival during the Famine and how individual people's circumstances shaped their experiences during the Great Hunger.Become a supporter & access dozens of exclusive podcastsPatreon www.patreon.com/irishpodcastAcast https://plus.acast.com/s/irishhistory
During the noughties, the August bank holiday was truly a tale of two cities: Reading and Leeds. Thousands of teenagers and early 20-somethings flocked to both of them for the festival weekend, armed with tents, sleeping bags, crates of Strongbow and their recently acquired exam results. The twin festivals were nothing short of chaotic: tents were set on fire, security fences were stolen to make wrestling cages and people fell into long drops (yes, that did actually happen). In episode two of The Noughties Podcast, we cover it all. We hear from Bloc Party's Matt Tong on the role the festivals played in shaping the band's career, we speak to Celeste Cruz (from Daphne and Celeste) about getting bottled offstage when she performed in 2000, and we hear 'war stories' from several festival goers, including BBC Radio 3's Elizabeth Alker.
Ted AKA @tedankhamen joins me in Derry and Toms for the second leaf of our Summer diptych musing on Moorcock, gaming and whatever else enters our eyeline. Some choice cuts in here including miniature bashing, Tolkien (again), a shock Strongbow appreciation story, chaosium-isms... but mostly some good, chewy thinking on modelling Moorcockian worlds and cosmology. I also bang my BoL drum again. Be sure to have a good delve around Ted's blog Tomb of Tedankhamen. Ted also mentioned Lasers and Feelings by John Harper. Join hosts Gabe Cook, Martyn Goodwin-Sharman, Grant Hutchison and Producer Scott as as they do a deep dive on Star Wars in the Neutral Cider Hotel!Grant Hutchison is back on the podcast explaining why he missed the previous episode's recording. Gabe lets the guys know that he's recently won CAMRA's Campaigner of the Year Award and we're all so proud of him and his relentless cider (and self) promotion. Finally, Martyn shares a wonderful story of drinking culture in the UK and a night of fun capped off with a vomit shower. Then, it's onto the news where Gabe details a new release from Strongbow that's edging into the Hard Seltzer world with their new Dark Fruit Ultra. There's also a discussion of some of the big cider competitions that are back on this year including GLINTCAP, Hereford Cider Museum and Royal Bath and West Show. Grant reveals that his cider shop (Aeble) has launched a new cider subscription service offering high quality ciders for subscribers throughout the UK. Finally, Gabe and the guys raise a glass to Gabe's former boss Alex Peckham from Peckham's Cider in New Zealand as Alex recently passed away from illness. Cheers to you, Alex. RIP.Then it's onto this week's interview and, as Producer Scott likes to say, it's a doozy! This week, the guys invite onto the show a couple of committed environmentalists and permaculture practitioners that apply strong sustainable credentials to their cider making. The result is a spectacular range of delicious ciders that we can't stop talking about. Checking into the hotel is Lydia Crimp and Tom Tibbits from Artistraw Cider! In between loads of laughter, the guys chat about how they got started, getting high on their own supply, their unique and environmental approach to cider, how they work together as a married couple, their obsession with puns and their favorite radio station, Cider.fm!Finally, the guys close out the show by highlighting some of the favorite things they are watching lately which leads to a fairly lengthy discussion of Star Wars movies and shows (The Mandalorian). We are INTO THE CIDER-VERSE this week on Domestic Pints ONLY, in our first ever 'battle of the ciders' - we are chatting a matchup of some of the most popular domestic ciders in the country. First we chat about the history of ciders and the different types and characteristics before discussing the popular SOMERSBY apple cider. Next up we chat STRONGBOW dry cider, before ending with the popular BC selection OKANAGAN CRISP APPLE cider. We also take a quick break at roughly the 40 min mark to sample some cider and beer together (colloquially known as a 'snakebite'). Had a fun time sampling these tasty bevvies. We hope to return back to ciders in a future episode, possibly sampling some of the options on the craft market. Next we return back to our stomping grounds, chatting some 'western' bargain bin beers! It's out with the old shameless plugs, and in with the new shameless plugs, as Gabe Cook, Grant Hutchison and Martyn Goodwin-Sharman check back into the newly refurbished, Neutral Cider Hotel! The guys welcome Season 2 in a wildly unceremonious fashion, but lay down the expectation of a monthly schedule, so get ready for a new and different pace for the show. First things first though as Producer Scott has to ready the sound effects because the author of Ciderology announces his Patreon (Ta Da)! With wonderful exclusives, tier names and writing propositions, there's plenty to get excited about with Gabe's latest venture! Then it's onto the news, with a cider subscription service in the UK, the chain Wetherspoons have ditched Strongbow for Stowford Press, and a certain person is not going to Cidercon, so there's a whole broadsheet in this week's opening of the show. Then, we have a brilliant chat with national treasure Olly Smith. He's an award winning communicator, author and podcast host and, without question, the jolliest drinks expert in town, He has regular television spots, books, and Pingu writing credits to his name! The guys chat everything, from Jason Orange, to parents loving Gabe, George Harrison and his Olly's own range of glassware! It's a full, wild ride of enthusiasm from a wine loving guy, who makes it incredibly tempting to pick up a bottle of plonk pronto! After the chat with Olly, the guys drink Little Pomona's collab with our own Grant; First Waltz. A rich, wild ride that the guys drink and dissect, whilst using a word that doesn't sound right in a British mouth! The guys then break down how collaborations come together in cider, so definitely a chat you might want to listen to if you're looking to make something in cider.Alas, that's the end of the show, so please do check out the socials, and send us your messages and Speakpipes to have your say in where the guys go, what happens in the future, and just let us know how you're doing. And, thanks for listening. We appreciate you.The Team:Gabe is a cider expert: The CiderologistGrant has two cider businesses: Re:Stalk and Aeble Cider ShopMartyn loves to write about cider: CiderShitThe Rest of The Team:Executive Producer/Editor: Scott RiggsMusic: Billy KennedyConnect:Instagram: NeutralCiderHotelFacebook: NeutralCiderHotelTwitter: NeutralCiderPodListen and share episodes on our website: https://www.neutralciderhotel.com/ Leave us a voicemail: https://www.speakpipe.com/neutralciderhotel
Rewind 852 years and you'll find no English in Ireland, not even a single Wetherspoons. But then along came a deposed Irish king called Dermot who wanted his land back and it all went pear-shaped.Hazel tells Shane how English rule in Ireland all began – from Strongbow and badass Aoife, to the King of Gossip – and we wonder what would have happened to the Emerald Isle if things had played out differently.Find us on social media @thehazelhayes and @shanetodd or @shanetoddcomedy. What's the big deal with drinking in the UK? We all love a pub garden, a rooftop cocktail and (back in the day) an illicit local park gathering compete with a 3L bottle of Strongbow or a bottle of red you stole from your parent's wine rack! But why are we so obsessed with drinking? In today's episode we talk about drinking culture, including the peer pressure we've all experienced when it comes to having a bevvie or 2, and we spill (somewhat irresponsibly), our worst hangovers and embarrassing stories resulting from having one too many! We question, is the boozy brunch replacing those iconic nights out? AND we provide you with our recommendations for the best brunch spots in London in our 'Place or Space' segment! Also in today's episode, we play a quick game of ‘Would you rather?' with an alcohol theme and Becki shares a hilarious ‘She-to'my-nanigan'! Do beaches have a history? They very rarely feature in history books, however some of the most important chapters in our past began on beaches. This episode was recorded at Passage East in Co Waterford. This beach is arguably one of the most important historic landscapes on the island. The Norman Invasion began here as both Strongbow and Henry II made landfall at Passage East.In this episode I look at the history of beaches, why they are often overlooked by historians and the fascainting story of how the Norman Invasion began at Passage East .In this podcast I reference the episode 'Dublin 1303 - The business of war'. Its worth checking out if you want to hear more about medieval warfare https://play.acast.com/s/irishhistory/dublin-1303-the-business-of-warFinally apologies for the lack of shows over the last few weeks - its all explained in this podcast. Join hosts Gabe Cook, Grant Hutchison and Martyn Goodwin-Sharman as they get very merry with berries in the Neutral Cider Hotel!Firstly, the first draft is almost right closely nearly coming to be given in on Gabe's new book; Modern British Cider! We're wondering if gabe went over the wordcount! Martyn's new blend with regulars on the show Little Pomona, Glad to be Plaid is out in the world, with MAD CYDER HYPE! And finally Grant keeps the guys all regular with the news of the Museum of Cider reopening again, before the guys split to the news. This week's news is filled with more piss and vinegar than the usual fair, featuring cures for the hichoueps, correct use for foxwhelp single varieties and the aromas of Scottish Scalps. Then the guys get ready for some unadulterated fruit ciders! This week things are slightly different, as the guys delve deep into the dark world of Fruit Ciders! Drinks with a huge sway in the cider market and mostly loathed by dentists, this was a category that the guys couldn't ignore any longer! And it's a go big or go home situation, as the guys try three of the biggest in the UK market, with Strongbow Dark Fruit, Kopparberg Strawberry & Lime, and Rekorderlig Strawberry Lime. Get ready for some wild reactions from the hypercritical triumvirate, high blood sugar, insane analysis and some Jackass Lite stunts! Then onto the other end of the flavoured cider market, with Martyn's blend In Touch 2 with Pilton. The fruit on show is Bacchus grape skins, brought together with keeved ciders and Dabinett, so the fruit is brought to life by the cider, but don't take my word for it, I just write the show notes and blend the stuff! Then it's onto the game, which Martyn has brought to the bunch with some wild rules! Drink along with your guesses, and slide into our DMS with the results! I'll buy anyone a drink who gets the whole lot! - GabeThank you for joining us at the show, and leave us a message at our Speakpipe and join us on our socials below! The Team:Gabe is a cider expert: The CiderologistGrant has two cider businesses: Re:Stalk and Aeble Cider ShopMartyn loves to write about cider: CiderShitThe Rest of The Team:Executive Producer/Editor: Scott RiggsMusic: Billy KennedyConnect:Instagram: NeutralCiderHotelFacebook: NeutralCiderHotelTwitter: NeutralCiderPodListen and share episodes on our website: https://www.neutralciderhotel.com/ Leave us a voicemail: https://www.speakpipe.com/neutralciderhotel

Big Breakfast Little Stories is back! The first story in the series is called 'Aoife's Wedding' and is dedicated to a little girl, Aoife Kelly from Hillview, whose parents called her after Aoife MacMurrough - of Strongbow and Aoife fame. This story is dedicated to her!
ElfQuest is a back with an all-new, eight-part series called Stargazer's Hunt! In this episode, David and guest host Tanya Scott-Thomas react to the premiere issue, discussing the art collaboration between Wendy Pini and series artist Sonny Strait, the first glimpse of life on the Starhome, Strongbow's grief, Jink as a child, Venka's parenting choices, and Skywise's loss and fear. Also included is a recap of major events of The Final Quest, news updates on the latest new ElfQuest releases, and a summary of all the ways to purchase and read ElfQuest comics and graphic novels.
It's a special game of non-copyright infringement Fluxx alright? Nothing to see here, honest. Highlights include: - No business! - Who broke whose copyright? - Brandy and tea, fine. Strongbow and tea... no - Mark can't read - We're interrupted by some paranormal activity - Rip off or interpretation - you decide
The Final Quest draws ever closer to its conclusion. In this episode, we tackle issue #23, an emotional rollercoaster with heart and heartbreak in equal measure and the penultimate chapter of the saga. We discuss Windkin's lethal work, Dewshine's threat, Dart's full circle, Two-Edge's valor, the Go-Backs' armor, Treestump's dream, the mystery of the Little Palace, Kimo's sacrifice, Leetah's song, the Wolfriders' naivete, Shuna's fate, Strongbow's choice, the end of the Way, and more. One more issue to go. . . .
Issue #22 of the Final Quest is a pivotal issue not only in the Final Quest series but in the entire 40-year-old ElfQuest saga--so much so that it took us two episodes to discuss it. This is part two. We talk about the fulfillment of Skywise's quest to reach the stars, his relationship with Cutter and Timmain, and the ultimate fate of Moonshade and Strongbow.
Final Quest #20 is here and it's party time in Father Tree Holt. The impending threat of gun-wielding humans doesn't stop the elves from celebrating a new lifemating and a surprise Recognition. With Ryan off on vacation, David and special guest hosts Lisa Lannen and Katie La Salle-Lowry discuss these joyous events, plus the handing over of the mantle of chieftainship, new developments in Moonshade and Strongbow's troubled relationship, a new look for some trolls, a lovemate for Two-Edge, Rayek growing up, the spectre of death by fire for some ancient elves, and the answer to the question, "who stays, who goes?"
In this episode, we discuss issue #18 of the Final Quest. Lots of big developments in this issue! Cutter completes his latest quest in the Frozen Mountains and we muse on the implications of his powerful apology for both elves and trolls. We also talk about the evolution of Strongbow and Moonshade's troubled relationship, the growing powers of the Palace Dwellers, the poor treatment Two-Edge has received in his long life, Skywise's foibles and Venka's big surprise.
It's our review of The Final Quest #9! Is this the end of the Go-Back tribe as we know it? Venka and company make their way through the troll tunnels with Two-Edge leading the way - what will they discover in the Holt? Moonshade and Strongbow finally separate - but who gets the tree den and custody of the kids? Meanwhile Sunstream might just be the WoTM version of Bill Gates, and Cutter and Skywise literally become 'high' ones as they partake of the delights of dreamberries!
After a lengthy wait, we are back for our review of issue #3! Divorce? Nazi eagles? Communist deer? Is this still Elfquest?! Join Ryan and David as we discuss whether Ember will survive torture at the hands of Angrif Djun; if Strongbow and Moonshade can work out their "issues"; and the minutiae of Teir's philosophical musings on amphibians!
