“This journey didn't begin with fight promotion—it began with the love of the arts, and it continues because of it.”“Mastery is when you're unconsciously competent—your body knows before your mind can think.”“We didn't just build champions—we built humans. And you can feel the difference when they walk into the room.” – Scott CokerWelcome to a very special episode of the Black Belt Podcast. I'm your host, Harinder Singh, and today I'm joined by a true pioneer, visionary, and martial artist—Scott Coker. You may know him as the founder of Strikeforce, the former president of Bellator, or the man who helped shape the careers of some of the greatest fighters in the world. But what sets Scott apart is not just what he built—it's how he built it.At his core, Scott is a martial artist. A student and teacher who carries the legacy of Ernie Reyes, a master of building not just champions, but character. From training in Korea to creating global fight organizations, from discovering legends like Daniel Cormier and Ronda Rousey to launching his latest venture, “Fight Night,” Scott's journey is a masterclass in authenticity, intuition, and martial arts spirit. In this conversation, we dive into:The philosophy behind building warriors from the ground up.The subtle art of talent identification and what it means to feel someone's greatness before the world sees it.The return to grassroots martial arts through “Fight Night” in San Jose. The evolving culture of combat sports—from rings to cages, from Muay Thai to MMA.And most importantly, what it really means to live, breathe, and walk the path of martial arts—on and off the mat. This is more than a conversation. It's a rare glimpse into the heart and mind of someone who's helped shape the evolution of modern martial arts, all while staying deeply rooted in the traditional code of the warrior.

Kevin Green was a rookie firefighter with the LAFD who was off duty one night out on a date when he witnessed a car crash on the freeway late at night. After pulling his truck over to help, a drunk driver crashed into the disabled vehicle, knocking it into Kevin & crushing his leg against his own truck. What happens after is a story of survival, recovery, & the importance of the fire family as Kevin frees himself from the wreckage, helps the original victim, then treats his own shattered leg. Once en route to the trauma center the firefighters treating Kevin notify his station as well as his previous department, the Compton FD. Members from both departments meet Kevin at the hospital with his family, and stay with him every step of the way. We talk about the multiple surgeries and attempted surgeries Kevin endured, as well as not knowing if he would lose his leg. He describes hearing conversations while he was supposed to be completely unconscious but was only paralyzed. We also talk about the long road to recovery that saw Kevin miraculously return to work in a year. We talk about martial arts, discipline, growing up in Compton, filming a reality show as a rookie fireman, Compton FD stories, LAFD vs CFD drill towers, fat guys with Black Belts, Serra HS career day, Ernie Reyes, & we get a mention for one of Ben's MAC trauma centers, Harbor UCLA. Kevin is an awesome guy & his positive outlook on life is infectious as are his stories about growing up as a karate kid in Compton. This episode stands strong.

Cindy Villanueva is a memoirist and an inspirational writer with a passion for helping women achieve lives of strength and joy. She's the author of a terrific book called “Don't Fight Mad: A Black Belt's Quest To Recapture Joy” and she is the co-author of “Finding Our Wings: Seven Entrepreneurs on Reclaiming Hope and Power”. Cindy is a seventh degree black-belt master instructor and the owner of Ernie Reyes' World Martial Arts. Her love of teaching led her to be an adjunct professor at Concordia University of Texas where she teaches undergraduate marketing and graduate marketing management and leadership. She speaks regularly on leadership and women in business. Cindy has four children and two grand-children and she splits her time between Austin, Texas and New Smyrna Beach, Florida. In this episode, Cindy and I discuss: Difference between progression in girls and boys when learning self-defense How to set healthy boundaries and how to communicate effectively Navigating through fear and dealing with it healthily Warning signs of an unhealthy or a potentially dangerous relationship Key Takeaways: Don't be afraid to change. Be the person who you're designed to be, that person can change and that's okay. To learn self-defense quicker, be comfortable with getting hurt and be ready to hurt. Sometimes violence is appropriate. Not all kinds of violence are evil. Think about the upside of embracing that fear vs capitulating to that fear. If you choose the latter, you would be less than who you are designed to be and who you're capable of being. Don't instantly dismiss yourself when you feel something is wrong. Trust your intuition and make an informed decision. "As soon as you hear or start saying the word ‘should', run the other direction… there shouldn't be a should, everyone is different. Figure out who you are… and what brings you joy." — Cindy Villanueva Connect with Cindy Villanueva: Twitter: https://twitter.com/KnockoutMrktg Website: http://www.cindyvillanueva.com/ | http://www.komarketingstrategies.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/cindyvillanueva/detail/contact-info/ CONNECT WITH CYNTHIA: If you'd like to chat with Cynthia, sign up for your Personal Safety Preparedness Consultation with her today! Tom Callos Mini-Bio:Tom Callos is a 7th degree black belt under Ernie Reyes, Sr. --and a 1st dan in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu under Andre Galvao. His first lessons were in judo, in 1969. He earned his 1st degree black belt in Taekwondo in 1979 --and his Black Belt in Jiu-Jitsu 49 years after he first stepped on the mats.Tom owned 2 schools located in Reno, Nevada that at their peak taught over 800 students each week. He was, for a time, in a partnership with his teacher in 11 schools in California's Bay Area and owned a school located in Hilo, Hawaii which is now owned and operated by his former student, BJ Penn. For several decades before his retirement in 2019, Tom was in service to the international martial arts community as a business consultant and curriculum designer. The programs he designed focused on altruism and his “Out of the dojo and into the world” approach to marketing, teaching, and rank testing. He designed programs such as The Ultimate Black Belt Test, The 6-Tasks Character Development Program, The Random Acts of Kindness Program --and for 15 years ran an annual “build-vention,” a martial arts business convention that was held in rural Alabama and had participants raising money for --and then building --homes and other structures to benefit people in need. His efforts in Alabama brought a quarter of a million dollars in donations and was a catalyst for more than 40,000 man-hours of volunteer labor. Now retired from consulting, Tom is working on his Bachelor of Fine Arts, with a specialty in printmaking at Boise State University.

Full disclosure, 90s "Ninja" movies have fried our brains. The ratio of Surf Ninjas Discussion to us talking about literally anything else is heavily skewed. Also, Harris made a very regrettable joke in the closing minutes of this podcast that he expects to be paying for in the afterlife, if such a thing exists. Note: We like our language NSFW salty, and there be spoilers here…Face Front, True Believers! Are the Fantastic 4 DOOMED!?! Will they ever appear in a motion picture with a Tomatometer above 37%? And should the unreleased Neue Constantin/Roger Corman feature from a quarter-century ago even be counted, as some claim that it was only ever made to maintain a producer's option on the property, but was never intended to be seen by, in Stan Lee's own words, "human beings"? Alex Hyde-White is Mr. Fantastic? Rebecca Staab is Invisible Girl? Jay Underwood is The Human Torch? Michael Bailey Smith and/or Carl Ciarfalio (and maybe Ernie Reyes?) is/are The Thing? The Terrible Trio of Frank, Mac, & Fixit will be the judges, as we look at the maybe first 4 movie on it's sorta-kinda 25th anniversary to see if it really is Clobberin' Time! Excelsior! For the final show of the season Arden and another kung fu film! Though, Paul will argue that it’s not a kung fu movie, but a terribly long 80s music video. Either way, the guys are obviously having a fun time reviewing it. Oh, and there’s a single person in the chat room during the live show. It sounds sad to have only one person, but he’s one of the film’s stars! JOKE’S ON YOU, REST OF THE INTERNET. Interested in watching this piece of cinema? Choose your flavor below: Amazon Instant has it in glorious SD! Google Play iTunes Youtube On with the show: Once again, Arden brings us a movie to review. Previously, he brought us Revengeofthe.ninja. We learn that M.A.S.K., Mask and The Mask are all different films and television shows. Chris is fascinated with Berry Gordy’s Wikipedia page. The Last Dragon is ranked number 33 for the year in 1985 and look at the movies below it. Clue, Weird Science and more. There’s a Road House play? Get your fan site on because you need the glow. The villain is played by the late Julius Carry, who is simply amazing. Lots of recognizable faces in this film, William H. Macy, Rudy from the Cosby Show, Chazz Palminteri and this guy who is in every mobster film. Vanity’s 7th Heaven is…well, watch at your own risk. Not one, but two songs in this film were nominated for a Razzie. Arden compares Vanity’s dance in the 7th Heaven video to Prancercise. An actor from the film, Ernie Reyes Jr. shows up in the chat room during our live stream of this episode. Chris recounts the experience here. Chris is frustrated because he can’t find the Suki Yaki Hot Saki Sue song anywhere for purchase. Paul blows the minds of the others when he points out that Leroy’s master is just regurgitating fortune cookie wisdom throughout the entire film. Hey! He’s right. Ernie Reyes tells us from the chat room that his dad Ernie Reyes Sr. was one of the baddies in the club fight scene near the end. Who’s Leroy’s dentist? He does great work. As we wind the recap down, Ernie Reyes Jr. shares a great insight from being on the set during the final scene in the movie. Have a listen, we can’t spoil it here. We discuss 80’s music vs. boy bands and Arden dares Paul to watch Breakin and Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo. We discuss other possible movies to watch and Ernie suggests a few from the chat room, like Surf Ninjas. Then hilariously he says, “Why is my whole career films that can be on your show?” Thanks to Arden for joining us on a very funny show. Check out the restaurant he and friends are creating on twitter. There’s a blog for Prairie Noodle Shop as well. Of course, we need to thank Ernie Reyes Jr. for popping into the chat room. You can find him on twitter, @erniereyesjr. Finally, we have to thank you the audience for indulging us and listening. Support Film Frown on Patreon
