Leroy Green (Taimak) has been dumped by his martial arts master so he can unlock the next level in his training – the Glow. While trying to find his inner power, Laura (Vanity) tries to unlock other inner feelings he has as well. Good thing Leroy is hanging around because Vanity has multiple kidnap attempts from a corrupt music promoter. Meanwhile, Sho'nuff (Julius Carry) will stop at nothing for an epic confrontation and Converse kissing with Leroy. There will be Glow EVERYWHERE! Ah, yes, to be young in NYC in the 80s. This is exactly how it was! RTS masters eating popcorn with chopsticks. La-Mar, Collin and Lucor reminisce over the “King of Colfax” and groove to this awesome soundtrack. We just hope you “jack ‘em up, buddy!”

Join hosts Krissy Lenz and Nathan Blackwell with special guest Alice Baker as they roundhouse kick their way through Barry Gordy's 1985 martial arts musical mashup The Last Dragon. This cult classic blends kung fu action, Motown music, and 80s pop culture into a unique cinematic experience that defies traditional genre boundaries. The hosts dive deep into the film's peculiar plot, following Leroy Green's quest to achieve "the glow" while navigating between two outrageous villains: the flamboyant Sho'nuff (played brilliantly by Julius Carry) and the unhinged video game mogul Eddie Arcadian. The discussion highlights how the movie, despite being a critical failure, became a beloved cultural touchstone, particularly in the Black community, spawning memorable catchphrases and iconic scenes. The episode reveals fascinating behind-the-scenes details, including how the film nearly missed securing Bruce Lee footage rights and lost 40 pages of script in a fortunate accident that actually helped streamline the final cut. The hosts also explore the impressive Motown soundtrack, featuring collaborations with legendary musicians, though they agree some of the songs haven't aged as gracefully as others.Key Topics Covered:Early career appearances by William H. Macy and Chazz PalminteriThe impressive roster of actors who almost played Leroy, including Denzel Washington and Lawrence FishburneVanity's decision to choose this film over Purple RainThe cultural mixing of various martial arts styles and traditionsThe film's innovative blend of music video aesthetics with martial arts actionNotable fight choreography by Robert van CleefYoung Ernie Reyes Jr.'s scene-stealing performanceThe movie's influence on future films, including possible Matrix connectionsVarying audience reactions and the film's revival screening appealWhether you're a longtime fan or discovering this unique piece of 80s cinema for the first time, this episode offers an entertaining deep dive into a film that perfectly encapsulates the decade's excess, style, and charm. The hosts rate it between 6-7 out of 10, agreeing that while the plot may meander, the entertainment value, particularly when watched with friends, makes it a worthwhile viewing experience. --We couldn't do this without your support of The Most Excellent 80s Movies Podcast! Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place (Renamed "Two Guys and a Girl" in its third season) was a sitcom that aired on ABC from 1998 to 2001. The show is about three twenty-somethings who share a Boston apartment and hang around (and work) at a pizza place. A lot of the motivation from the show came from show creator Kenny Schwartz's experiences working at a Massachusetts pizza shop. Modern day this sitcom might best be remembered as the launching pad for a young Ryan Reynolds. In its premier, the show's pilot was watched by 17.94 million viewers. Unfortunately the pilot ended up being the shows most viewed episode. The show received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the chemistry of the cast and the witty dialogue, but criticized the formulaic plots and the frequent changes in tone and direction. But can that boy's attention? Listen as they deep dive "The Pilot" and find out. Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Richard Ruccolo, Traylor Howard Jennifer Westfeldt, Julius Carry, & David Ogden Stiers www.S1E1POD.com Instagram & X (Twitter): @S1E1POD

This weeks special guest Big Court The Last Dragon (sometimes listed as Berry Gordy's The Last Dragon) is a 1985 American martial arts comedy film produced by Rupert Hitzig for Berry Gordy and directed by Michael Schultz.[4] The film stars Taimak, Vanity, Julius Carry, Christopher Murney, Keshia Knight Pulliam, and Faith Prince. Choreography was created by Lester Wilson and Lawrence Leritz. The Last Dragon was released in theaters by TriStar Pictures on March 22, 1985. The film was a financial success despite a mixed reception by critics, and is considered a cult classic. In New York City, Leroy Green (also known as "Bruce Leeroy") has dreams of becoming a great martial artist like his idol Bruce Lee. His master explains that he has reached the final level of martial arts accomplishment known as "The Last Dragon." Martial artists who reach this final level are said to be able to concentrate such mystical energy into their hands that they begin to glow. Only a true martial arts master would be able to exhibit "The Glow" over his entire body. Leroy doesn't fully understand and, in possession of a medal supposedly belonging to Bruce Lee, Leroy embarks upon a spiritual journey to find Master Sum Dum Goy, whom his master claims can help Leroy unlock the power of "The Glow."BlackBusters is a podcast focused on reviewing, celebrating, re-living and critiquing Black film. Hands down this is one of our favorite karate movies of all-time. Full stop. In this episode we literally swoon over this entire movie, beginning to end, and in our final thoughts our only complaint is that we can’t get more. Not only is it a great movie, but being produced by Motown means it has the most amazing movie soundtrack ever. Dominic explains his love of both Sho’nuff and Richie. Melissa has a few Laura moments over Taimak. John gives us all the details on Vanity. This is a great episode for a fantastic movie. Movie info Premiered: March 22, 1985 Directed by: Michael Schultz Very accomplished before this movie. TONS of TV work. Directed Sgt. Star of the 1985 Motown-produced cult classic, The Last Dragon, we welcome Taimak to our first podcast of 2018. Taimak Guarriello was only 19 when he made his starring-role debut as the wise kung fu kid 'Bruce' Leroy Green in Berry Gordy's weird and wonderful action fantasy. It's a fun mix of martial arts and music, but the shoot wasn't always smooth, and Taimak explains some of the on-set disputes, rivalries and relationships which fuelled the production. He discusses working with legendary music mogul, Berry Gordy, and his co-stars Julius Carry and Vanity. But we also talk about his tough upbringing in New York and London, where his bohemian parents introduced him to many of the major celebrities of the time, including the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Andy Warhol and David Bowie. He was inspired by Bruce Lee and Shaw Brothers films, and even trained under the legendary 'Black Dragon' himself, Ron Van Clief. Taimak has remained true to the martial arts ever since, and he continues to train all the time as well as make his own movies, including a pseudo-sequel to The Last Dragon, called Master. You can read more about Master on the film's Indiegogo page. You can also keep up-to-date with all of Taimak's activities by following him on Instagram and Twitter. Also on this episode, I spend a bit of time chatting to the actor, fitness trainer and filmmaker, Daniel Lue, who has just made his own kung fu movie, called Kung Fu Theatre. Its a zero-budget tribute to the old-school kung fu movies he loved in his youth, and you can watch it for free on Amazon.
Michael Schultz's The Last Dragon is the story of Leroy Green (Taimak), a young man on a quest to find wisdom who's beset by gangsters and the Shogun of Harlem.
For the final show of the season Arden and another kung fu film! Though, Paul will argue that it’s not a kung fu movie, but a terribly long 80s music video. Either way, the guys are obviously having a fun time reviewing it. Oh, and there’s a single person in the chat room during the live show. It sounds sad to have only one person, but he’s one of the film’s stars! JOKE’S ON YOU, REST OF THE INTERNET. Interested in watching this piece of cinema? Choose your flavor below: Amazon Instant has it in glorious SD! Google Play iTunes Youtube On with the show: Once again, Arden brings us a movie to review. Previously, he brought us Revengeofthe.ninja. We learn that M.A.S.K., Mask and The Mask are all different films and television shows. Chris is fascinated with Berry Gordy’s Wikipedia page. The Last Dragon is ranked number 33 for the year in 1985 and look at the movies below it. Clue, Weird Science and more. There’s a Road House play? Get your fan site on because you need the glow. The villain is played by the late Julius Carry, who is simply amazing. Lots of recognizable faces in this film, William H. Macy, Rudy from the Cosby Show, Chazz Palminteri and this guy who is in every mobster film. Vanity’s 7th Heaven is…well, watch at your own risk. Not one, but two songs in this film were nominated for a Razzie. Arden compares Vanity’s dance in the 7th Heaven video to Prancercise. An actor from the film, Ernie Reyes Jr. shows up in the chat room during our live stream of this episode. Chris recounts the experience here. Chris is frustrated because he can’t find the Suki Yaki Hot Saki Sue song anywhere for purchase. Paul blows the minds of the others when he points out that Leroy’s master is just regurgitating fortune cookie wisdom throughout the entire film. Hey! He’s right. Ernie Reyes tells us from the chat room that his dad Ernie Reyes Sr. was one of the baddies in the club fight scene near the end. Who’s Leroy’s dentist? He does great work. As we wind the recap down, Ernie Reyes Jr. shares a great insight from being on the set during the final scene in the movie. Have a listen, we can’t spoil it here. We discuss 80’s music vs. boy bands and Arden dares Paul to watch Breakin and Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo. We discuss other possible movies to watch and Ernie suggests a few from the chat room, like Surf Ninjas. Then hilariously he says, “Why is my whole career films that can be on your show?” Thanks to Arden for joining us on a very funny show. Check out the restaurant he and friends are creating on twitter. There’s a blog for Prairie Noodle Shop as well. Of course, we need to thank Ernie Reyes Jr. for popping into the chat room. You can find him on twitter, @erniereyesjr. Finally, we have to thank you the audience for indulging us and listening. Support Film Frown on Patreon
