So when we got the opportunity to talk to Tom Bailey of the Thompson Twins, well guess what? Of course we're not going to turn that down! We discuss the Thompson Twins succes, his last album "Science Fiction," upcoming work, The Totally Tubular Festival and much more! t took a few years, but Tom Bailey is finally reclaiming the wonderful legacy of the Thompson Twins. The excellent hit makers were everywhere in the 80s, but eventually Tom lost interest in pop music and moved on with then wife Alannah Currie to making dub and trance music under the names Babble and International Observer letting the Twins' flame die out. Thankfully, about 10 years ago he brushed off those old hits, put out a poppy solo album, and has been back in our lives since. He's now joining forced with Thomas Dolby and others on the Totally Tubular tour this summer. We get into all of it including working with Nile Rodgers and Rupert Hine, the late great Matthew Seligman, John uHughes movies, and the stories behind a bunch of songs. Enjoy! www.thompsontwinstombailey.co.uk www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

We examine the history of carbon nanotubes, starting with Sumio Iijima in 1990. Or maybe Howard Tennett. Or maybe A.M. Nesterenko, N.F. Kolesnik, Yu.S. Akhmatov, V.I. Suhomlin, and O.V. Prilutskii, or maybe John Abrahamson, Peter Wiles, and Brian Rhoades. Or maybe others. Whoever it was, we then look at what mechanical, electrical, and optical properties are so interesting about nanotubes, then some practical applications for them.Support the show Support my podcast at https://www.patreon.com/thehistoryofchemistry Tell me how your life relates to chemistry! Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.07.14.549028v1?rss=1 Authors: Wallings, R., Mark, J., Staley, H., Gillett, D., Neighbarger, N., hirst, w., Kordasiewicz, H., Tansey, M. G. Abstract: Genetic variation around the LRRK2 gene affects risk of both familial and sporadic Parkinson's disease (PD). LRRK2 levels have become an appealing target for potential PD-therapeutics with LRRK2 antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) now in clinical trials. However, LRRK2 has been suggested to play a fundamental role in peripheral immunity, and it is currently unknown if targeting increased LRRK2 levels in peripheral immune cells will be beneficial or deleterious. Furthermore, the precise role of LRRK2 in immune cells is currently unknown, although it has been suggested that LRRK2-mediated lysosomal function may be crucial to immune responses. Here, it was observed that G2019S macrophages exhibited increased stimulation-dependent lysosomal tubule formation (LTF) and MHC-II trafficking from the perinuclear lysosome to the plasma membrane in an mTOR dependent manner with concomitant increases in pro-inflammatory cytokine release. Both ASO-mediated knock down of mutant Lrrk2 and LRRK2 kinase inhibition ameliorated this phenotype and decreased these immune responses in control cells. Given the critical role of antigen presentation, lysosomal function, and cytokine release in macrophages, it is likely LRRK2-targetting therapies may have therapeutic value with regards to mutant LRRK2 but deleterious effects on the peripheral immune system, such as altered pathogen control and infection resolution. EPISODE 40 Super Bowl Sunday has finally arrived! It’s the Chiefs and the Bucs - can Tom Brady separate his legacy from the New England Patriots and win yet another title, or will it be Patrick Mahomes’ time to take over as the face of the NFL? We bring in former NFL safety Quintin Demps to discuss his career, what he learned from Andy Reid, and what to expect this weekend. BEERS Is it IPA season again? Will reviews “Totally Tubular” from Orono Brewing Company in Maine, and its tropical notes have us dreaming of warmer places...well, anywhere that doesn’t have a foot of snow on the ground. Jake reviews “Peeptoad” from nearby Tilted Barn Brewing, to which he makes a comparison to another Rhode Island staple. BUSINESS You’d have to be living under a rock to not be aware of what’s going on in the stock market these past few weeks, and who better than our friend Zaid Admani to discuss it! In a relentless battle of “Bros vs. Suits,” the stock market endured a “short squeeze,” in which a group of Reddit users convinced many retail investors to pump up stocks in order to inflict massive losses on hedge funds who had “shorted” their share of these companies. GameStop, AMC, and BlackBerry had all benefited from the short squeeze - some users report gaining as much as 1700% on their positions. We break down the events of last week and ponder if this could be the new norm. We also discuss the recent resignation of Jeff Bezos, and what it could mean for the future of Amazon. BALLS Quintin Demps grew from a city kid growing up in San Antonio with a single mother to a standout defensive back at UTEP. He earned himself a 4th-round draft pick to the Eagles, was mentored by 9-time Pro-Bowler Brian Dawkins, and quickly found himself one win away from the 2009 Super Bowl...only to be walked off by a last-minute touchdown pass from Hall of Famer Kurt Warner. Demps reminisces on his memories of the league, the lessons he learned from now-Chiefs head coach Andy Reid during his time in Philadelphia, and being carved apart by Tom Brady during the four times in his career they played each other. We also discuss the mental and financial struggles with life after football, how to fix the Texans, what Deshaun Watson’s mentality should be going forward, and if Patrick Mahomes has a legitimate claim to the “Face of the NFL” title with a win. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/beersbusinessandballs/support

Upfronts are here, finally! In this week's Totally Tubular, Tim and I analyze all the relevant scheduling news, make our picks for most promising pilot, and consider why Limitless is being hung out to dry. After that, we dig into the week's premieres, including the very anticipated debut of Preacher and the absolutely unnecessary return of Wayward Pines. Along the way, we break down why Totally Tubular, like CBS's abandoned Drew pilot, skews too female. Segment breakdown: Upfront news round-up (01:18 – 37:39), Netflix's Lady Dynamite (37:40 – 47:21), AMC's Preacher (47:22 – 58:16), Fox's Wayward Pines (58:17 – 01:06:18), and the mailbag (01:06:19– 01:20:07). Beware! An upfront storm is blowin' in, and it's bound to bring in a swell of renewals, cancellations, and pilot orders. We here at Totally Tubular won't be caught out in the rain, oh no. We're prepared. In this week's episode, Tim and I chat about Fox's early pilot pick-ups, break down each network's biggest holes, and pick our fav potential series. Meanwhile, Noel jumps on the TV.com hotline to talk all things Good Wife. Disappointedly, nobody gets slapped. Segment breakdown: News round-up (01:52 – 14:08), Netflix's Chelsea ( 14:09 – 23:54), CBS's The Good Wife (23:55 – 57:34), Surveying pilots and network needs (57:35 – 01:10:50), and the mailbag (01:10:51– 01:23:10). Greetings, Programs! Not a three-hour tour, so to speak, but the results were the same -- the Renegade and Paige have become stranded on an island and have to team-up to get back to Argon City. We are privileged to discover some tidbits from Paige’s past that show us why she feels a bit “isolated” from just about everyone. (Who knew she was a musician? or a Med Program, for that matter?)
