"The Minot State one took us by surprise," U.S. Rep. Julie Fedorchak told us on this episode of Plain Talk, referring to the cuts of nearly two dozen staff at the North Dakota Center for Persons with Disabilities. One of those workers, Kyle Erickson, who lives with cerebral palsy and not only works for the center but received services from it as a child, joined us to talk about the cuts on a previous episode of Plain Talk. "We found out about it in the newspaper, and we've been trying to get to the bottom of it, and I'm not sure that we have yet," Fedorchak said, expressing some mild frustration with how President Donald Trump's administration has been going about these cuts. "I do wish that some of the sudden cuts that are coming out, that the the administration is unleashing, would be a little bit more clear," she said. "That we'd have more heads up, that we understood the grand scheme and how these things are working out. What the big plan is, because I think that's what's hard. It's not having time to prepare for them. Or be thoughtful about them." "You know, if I was doing it, that's not how I would do it," Fedorchak continued, responding to a question about how DOGE and Elon Musk have presented their efficiency efforts to the public. "I would I would not talk about it this way, but I'm not in charge." Still, Fedorchak supports the overall effort. "In my opinion, we do need to be retracting and right-sizing the federal government," she said. "It isn't sustainable. There has been out of control spending and we have to correct that for ourselves and for the future citizens of our country." Fedorchak also pushed back on claims that Medicaid is being cut and that Republicans are pushing for tax cuts for the rich. She said the rate of growth in Medicaid spending is to be slowed, and that Republicans only want to renew existing tax policy. Also on this episode, Minot-based rapper Dakotah Faye performed his song '925,' discussed how he's managed his burgeoning career as a performing artist from North Dakota, and talked about his work with the F5 Project as someone who has struggled with addiction in the past. This episode is presented by Lignite Energy Council, an organization dedicated to protecting and enhancing the development of North Dakota's abundant lignite resources. Their goal is to maintain a viable lignite coal industry and support the generation of electricity, synthetic natural gas, and valuable byproducts. Episode 172 - Adam Martin, 5-Time Felon Turned Social EntrepreneurAdam Martin resides in Fargo, North Dakota, and is the founder of the F5 Project, and the Ridge Treatment and Reentry Center. The F5 project serves the formerly incarcerated and those suffering from addictions – typically anyone in those situations have limited resources available to them. Usually, they struggle to obtain even the simplest things due to an unfair stigma. I love the organization's byline, “We're criminal justice reform warriors who offer grace without question and create change for those who hustle”. The F5 Project cuts the red tape and eliminates barriers to basic needs, employment, and accountability. They are hands and feet on the street offering housing, resources, and a customized support plan for those who need assistance.Adam spent a lot of time in juvenile detention, foster homes, and eventually jail. He lost his kids, lost his car, and he didn't have a driver's license. He was very far behind on his child support, accumulating major debt and he had no real ambitions to go and do anything other than drink a lot, do many drugs, and party. His Mom and Dad met in treatment, so some would say his future was predetermined. Sadly, he didn't think he was going to grow up to be anything great. One day he blacked out and woke up in a hotel room, after stealing a U-Haul and breaking into three businesses. He regained consciousness in that hotel room and could smell the cigarettes and the booze. Adam recalls seeing stolen laptops around him and knew that it had all happened again. At that moment he started to realize that he was hurting a lot of people and that was the beginning of a “life change” for him.The F5 project now has transition housing in three communities in North Dakota. They work on restoring voter rights and strive to find large numbers of what are referred to as “second chance” jobs for those in their programs.Their services include housing, employment, peer support, community connections, and recovery growth programs. Regardless of your answer to all those questions, Paul reminds us that we are not alone. Recovery Elevator is right here with you every step of the way. A recent study of baboons revealed that establishing robust social connections in adulthood, is so beneficial to the animals that it can mitigate the consequences of traumatic experiences during their early years. There's that word again. Connection. In addition, researchers have found that once these connections are made, the baboons report living longer lives. We have learned, are learning - that building connections helps us depart from alcohol. When we first enter an actual relationship with the molecule alcohol. It's a wonderful courtship, but we soon realize that alcohol gave us wings, and then took away the sky. We must replace the connection we had with alcohol with something else. She lives in Dillworth, MN, she works in care coordination with the F5 Project and has five children ranging from 5 to 18. For fun she hangs out with recovery friends while doing a variety of activities. Kathy's parents were both addicts and she was in the foster care system early in life. She would spend her childhood moving in and out of foster homes. When she was 12 she ended up living with her brothers and stepfather because her mother went to jail. Kathy wanted to be like her older brothers and started drinking to have a good time. It didn't take long for her drinking and drug abuse to get out of control. Kathy ended up getting pregnant at age 16 by a man she didn't know well. She says she no longer had parental support. She quit all substances through her pregnancy and had a goal to be a different mom than her own. She was unable to stay quit and felt a lot of guilt and shame surrounding it. Kathy was not able to stay clean during her second pregnancy and after having the baby she spent a lot of time stealing to support her habit and her children. She ended up trying rehab at one point but was unable to stay sober for very long. Kathy feels she didn't have great parenting skills and ended up losing custody of her children due to the drug abuse. Some felonies found her in jail and she tried to use this as an opportunity to get clean. After losing a close friend, Kathy asked her stepfather to bail her out. After about two months of using again she decided to get clean because that is what her friend would have wanted for her. She was able to get into inpatient treatment and felt this time that she was truly ready. As soon as she arrived, she went to a drum ceremony where she felt her spirit being awoken. She started learning about how her trauma affected her which helped her shed her shame. After treatment Kathy lived in a halfway house for a few months and upon getting out had her third child. Kathy started going to school for social work and was able foster her nieces who she has now adopted. She loves her current job as care coordinator and giving back to others. Kathy's plan in sobriety moving forward: to keep on giving back, anywhere and everywhere. Kathy's parting piece of guidance: You have control over your actions, and you can train your brain to be and do better. Adam Martin, founder of F5 Project is a change maker, paving the way for felons and addicts to hit ‘refresh' on a new day and new life, just like he has done. A 5 time felon. Adam Martin is a candidate for the Cass County Commission and the founder and executive director of the F5 Project, a nonprofit that for about the past six years has been helping people with addictions and felony convictions find work and housing. The organization's name is symbolic on two fronts: It's a reference to the F5 reset button on the keyboard as well as Martin's memory of believing he had, at one point, five felony warrants for his arrest. But while the keyboard symbolism is straightforward, Martin's criminal history is not as easily defined — either by his own recollection, or the official record. The coronavirus crisis has prompted policy makers in North Dakota, and across the nation, to look at reducing jail and prison populations by letting some low-risk offenders, and some folks in jail pre-trial because they can't make bond, out into the general population. In this episode I sit down with F5 Project (https://www.f5project.org/) a non profit set up to help coordinate services and provide personal support in order to deter repeat offenses. He got involved with F5 to keep himself accountable for recovery from his gambling addiction, he was at rock bottom with nothing left when he decided to get his life right. He is coming from a place that a lot of these inmates are, he finds that it is easy for them to relate to him. They started the podcast Eat.Sleep.HUSTLE.Repeat, to let as many people as possible know about the issues inmates face once they are released. “If we are able to provide continued support when they leave confinement, we have a greater chance of positively impacting their lives”. The F5 Project was started in 2016 by Adam Martin (https://www.linkedin.com/in/adamjaymartin) a 5 time felon that decided to turn his life around and by doing that help others. He is working to change the lives of inmates while they are still in confinement and prepare them to break the cycle once they are released. F5 believes that what happens in someone's past does not determine their future. What if we were all given an unlimited amount of grace despite our shortcomings? Adam Martin is the Founder of F5 Project, an organization that provides job and housing opportunities to felons leaving the prison system so they can have a sense of purpose and the confidence to re-enter their communities. Today, Jennifer and Adam dive deep into how the social stigma that surrounds felons effects their successful reentry into society and how we can do better in providing equal job opportunities to this untapped yet promising workforce. Adam Martin is dedicated to helping others overcome the things he has in his life: alcoholism, drug abuse, and a criminal background that includes 5 felonies. His work on the F5 Project has been a game-changer for many lives. Most felons are left with jobs that barely get their bills paid. They are given lower wages, higher expectations, and not enough room to succeed. With social stigmas holding back several socio-demographics, especially the vulnerable ones, Adam has one question: “What if we weren’t so quick to judge and brand people as unworthy?” If you want a story about reform, then Adam has one for us. After leaving the prison system, he had worked at a car wash, served and waited tables at restaurants - jobs that weren’t enough to support his family. Despite the setbacks, he knew that wasn’t what he wanted to do the rest of his life. Instead, he was going to find purpose and end the paycheck-to-paycheck cycle. He eventually got a job at an information technology company as an outside sales representative. They hired Adam even after knowing about his past, but he didn’t have the same advantages as the other employees. He didn’t have a license, he didn’t have a car - the things that would enable him to do his job efficiently. But that didn’t stop him from bringing in the sales needed to get him noticed by the higher-ups. He took the bus, he rode his bike, and he did everything he could to earn his keep. His dedication paid off. By his first year, he had made the company a million in revenue - an astonishing feat, even for non-felons. This brings us to how social stigma against felons hurt their opportunity for reform and successful reentry into society. Hiring people always comes with risks, but people aren’t just data. They are not just their standardized test results and their previous life choices. These individuals have hopes and dreams too. Most of the time, it’s because we’ve marked them as failures that they have ended up identifying themselves as such - this is not okay. Adam isn’t trying to get every felon hired, but he does want to advocate for those who are actually a good fit for businesses. Bad things can happen to anyone and that can push people into making hasty decisions, but that shouldn’t dictate that person’s opportunity to live a decent and fulfilling life. Nobody is perfect, and people should be allowed to grow and change for the better. Jennifer probes into how employers can overcome their fear of hiring felons, so Adam shares the 2 things he looks for in a potential hire: First, he wants complete transparency from the applicant and to know what their crime was, and second, what the applicant is doing every day to ensure that they don’t go back to prison and how they give back to the community. A shift in perspective is all it takes to make the workplace a better place. Want a little help creating your personal brand? Jennifer has a free resource for you.
