Splitting Fairways Episode 6: Golf’s Biggest Lie, “That’s Good.”

Every golfer has heard the phrase, “That’s good.” It usually comes after a short putt stops just shy of the hole, and before anyone has a chance to tap it in. For most recreational golfers, it’s simply part of the game. But should it be? That question is at the heart of Episode 6 of Splitting Fairways, the THP podcast where Ryan “Hawk” and Jeremy “Lord Tox” tackle the conversations golfers have every day. This week, the discussion centers on one of golf’s oldest unwritten rules: the gimme. Ryan argues that conceded putts are a practical necessity, helping keep rounds moving and making recreational golf more enjoyable. Jeremy counters that golf has only one finish line, the bottom of the cup, and every conceded putt turns an actual score into an educated guess. Along the way, the conversation explores where gimmes came from, why every group seems to have its own definition of “inside the leather,” and whether routinely accepting short putts quietly inflates handicaps over time. We also examine why golfers who never seem to miss a two-footer during a casual round suddenly insist on putting everything out when money, trophies, or bragging rights are on the line. Gimmes undoubtedly help pace of play, but they also raise an uncomfortable question: if a handicap is meant to reflect what you actually shoot, should posted scores include putts that were never made? After listening, we want to hear from you. What’s the longest putt that can honestly be called a gimme? Go to discussion... document.write("Loading Custom Ratings..."); The post Splitting Fairways Episode 6: Golf’s Biggest Lie, “That’s Good.” appeared first on The Hackers Paradise.

What defines a round of golf? For generations, the answer has been simple: 18 holes. It’s the standard golfers have measured themselves against for more than 250 years. But should it always be? In Episode 5 of Splitting Fairways, Hawk and Lord Tox tackle one of the biggest debates to emerge from the THP community this year after a social media post about a proposed 12-hole golf course sparked nearly half a million views and hundreds of passionate comments. The discussion quickly became about much more than hole count. Does golf need to evolve to fit modern lifestyles? Is time now the biggest barrier keeping people from playing? Or is the traditional 18-hole round still the only format that truly delivers the complete golf experience? Along the way, they dive into the surprising history of why 18 holes became the standard in the first place, read some of the best community comments from the original discussion, and explore whether this debate is really about golf courses or simply about making more time for the game we all love. Whether you’re firmly in the “18 holes or nothing” camp or think golf could benefit from more flexibility, this episode is guaranteed to make you think. Watch Episode 5 of Splitting Fairways and let us know where you stand in the debate. Scottie Scheffler getting a free drop for a ball he never found! And so close again for Sam Burns and Cameron Young. And what about Doug Parker, who was once destined for PGA Tour stardom? Poggi nails it with the father-son dynamic Doug Parker's in this character-driven story of family, rediscovery, and second chances, all set against a game that has a way of revealing the truth about people when it matters most.

If you’ve played golf long enough, you’ve probably heard both sides of this argument. Low handicaps hate giving strokes. Higher handicaps get tired of hearing them complain. So who’s right? That question serves as the foundation for this week’s episode of Splitting Fairways, the THP podcast where Ryan “Hawk” and Jeremy “Lord Tox” take on the conversations golfers are already having every day. Rather than deciding who’s right, the show explores both sides of golf’s most divisive topics. This week, the focus shifts to one of the oldest debates in the game: the handicap system. Along the way, the discussion explores scoring variance, sandbaggers, vanity handicaps, and why golfers on opposite ends of the handicap spectrum both seem convinced the system favors the other guy. Professional golf is an emotional game. Even the best players lose their tempers. Clubs get slammed. Equipment gets thrown. Frustration boils over. What happens next often depends on who did it. That question serves as the foundation for this week’s episode of Splitting Fairways, the THP podcast where Ryan “Hawk” and Jeremy “Lord Tox” tackle the debates golfers are already having every day. Rather than deciding who’s right, the show explores both sides of golf’s most divisive topics. This week, the conversation centers on one simple question: Are professional golfers judged by their actions, or by their reputation? Using recent examples involving Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Wyndham Clark, Sergio Garcia, Joaquin Niemann and Tiger Woods, Hawk argues that certain stars receive far more grace from fans and the media than others. Tox counters that reputation is earned and context should influence how we view these moments. Golfers agree on very few things. Equipment preferences vary wildly. Opinions on course conditions can change from one group to the next. Even something as simple as golf fashion can create spirited debate. Pace of play, though? Surely we can find some common ground there. Nearly every golfer agrees that slow play is a problem, but we have seen the disagreement begin when we ask how much it should impact the experience. That question serves as the foundation for Episode 2 of Splitting Fairways, the THP podcast where Ryan “Hawk” and Jeremy “Lord Tox” explore the conversations golfers are already having every day. Rather than trying to determine who is right and who is wrong, the show examines both sides of golf’s most divisive topics and the perspectives that shape them. This week, the discussion shifts from golf fashion to one of the most common complaints in the game. Are golfers too obsessed with pace of play? The topic originated from a discussion on the THP Forum that challenged a common assumption. The original post wasn’t defending slow play. Instead, it questioned whether golfers sometimes allow pace of play to affect their enjoyment of the game more than it should. Predictably, the responses were divided. One side argued that pace matters because golf is a shared experience. Slow groups impact everyone behind them, disrupt rhythm, and demonstrate a lack of awareness for other players on the course. The opposing view suggested that golfers have become conditioned to treat every delay as a crisis. Waiting occasionally is not the same thing as slow play, and in an era of increased participation and crowded tee sheets, some delays are simply part of the experience. As the episode unfolds, the conversation moves well beyond pace of play itself. Topics such as golf’s continued growth, public versus private course expectations, respect for fellow golfers, and modern expectations of convenience all become part of the discussion. Along the way, several memorable comments from THP Forum members help illustrate just how passionate golfers can become when discussing pace. Whether you believe slow play is one of the game’s biggest issues or think golfers sometimes allow it to overshadow an otherwise enjoyable round, Episode 2 explores both perspectives. After listening, we want to hear from you. Is slow play ruining golf, or are golfers letting it ruin golf? Let us know where you stand in the comments below. Golfers agree on a lot of things. We love the game. We obsess over equipment. We plan trips months in advance and can spend hours discussing a single hole, club, or round. What golfers do not do particularly well is agree with each other. That idea is the foundation behind Splitting Fairways, a new podcast from THP that explores the conversations golfers are already having every day. Hosted by Ryan “Hawk” and Jeremy “Lord Tox”, the show takes topics from around the game and examines them from opposing viewpoints. The goal is not to crown a winner or loser. Instead, it is to explore both sides of the debate and understand why golfers often see the same issue so differently. Golf is full of these conversations. Equipment. Travel. Etiquette. Golf culture. Style. Fitting. The way we experience the game continues to evolve, and not every golfer feels the same way about those changes. Splitting Fairways was created to provide a place for those discussions while keeping the focus on what brings golfers together in the first place: a shared passion for the game. For the inaugural episode, we start with a question that sounds simple on the surface: Are golf shorts getting too short? What began as a discussion on the THP Forum quickly revealed something much bigger. Golfers were not really arguing about inseam length. They were debating what golf should look like today. For some, modern golf fashion represents a natural evolution of the game. Golf apparel has become more athletic, more comfortable and more reflective of broader style trends. Just as equipment, instruction and course design have changed over time, many believe golf fashion should continue evolving as well. Others see things differently. They believe certain trends move too far away from the traditions that helped define golf for generations. For them, presentation remains part of the experience, and some modern styles simply do not fit the image they associate with the game. That tension sits at the heart of the discussion. The conversation touches on self-expression, golfer identity, generational perspectives and the difference between etiquette and personal preference. Most importantly, it explores whether golf can continue evolving without losing the elements that made people fall in love with it in the first place. In many ways, Splitting Fairways Episode 1 serves as the perfect introduction to what Splitting Fairways aims to be. The topic may be golf shorts, but the discussion is really about identity. It is about how golfers view the game, how those views change over time and why even seemingly small topics can generate strong opinions. After watching or listening to Splitting Fairways Episode 1 we want to hear from you! Are golf shorts getting too short, or is this simply another example of golf evolving with the times? Let us know where you stand in the comments below, and welcome to Splitting Fairways. THPGolf · Splitting Fairways – Are Golf Shorts Getting Too Short?
