It’s a double-sized episode for a legendary double album! In this, the landmark fourth episode of Rush Strutter Zep Magik, Kevin plays his “Magik” card by selecting Pink Floyd’s acclaimed conceptual extravaganza The Wall for review and comment. Before the featured discourse, they discuss the necessity for lighthearted tunes in the midst of these trying times, with Kevin espousing the merits of post-Disney Miley Cyrus and Mike sharing a bit about the musical exploits of his former middle school teachers. Kevin also breaks out his guitar - a Fender American Vintage '62 Jazzmaster – and tries his hand at a few riffs from The Wall. Along the way, the guys wax philosophical about the album’s music, lyrics, and themes while also touching upon the 1982 film adaptation of The Wall starring Bob "I Don't Like Mondays" Geldof. From Bertolt Brecht to Blackie Lawless, Mike and Kevin run down the album's influences and impact as they assess The Wall’s ultimate place in the pantheon of rock and/or roll. This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/xS2ZWpLxkzQ We compare an original Roland RE-201 Space Echo with the RE-20 pedal, Strymon Volante and EchoFix EF-X2. Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below. Welcome to the episode. A little while back, Dan and I did a video on single-head tape delays based on our love of the Echoplex sound. You can watch it here: https://youtu.be/iDdK8QMcF2INow it’s the turn of the multi-head tape machine, specifically the classic Roland RE-201 Space Echo that debuted all the way back in 1974. We have some simple questions…How much does the old, analogue RE-201 sound like the ‘new’ RE-20 digital pedal? What about the EchoFix and the Strymon Volante? Can Dan put together a Heath-Robinson pedalboard that simulates what a multi-head tape delay does?Let’s do this – enjoy the episode! This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/FWZmr1rE-yM Why do tape delay machines sound sooooo good? It’s a question we are delving into over a series of shows. We kick off with our personal favourite REAL TAPE machines. Erm, our only machines, in fact. Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below. COVID-19: This video was filmed long before the social distancing measures were advised by various governments across the world. Rest assured that all of us at That Pedal Show began observing social distancing and stay-at-home measures as soon as they were announced. Be well y’all! There’s just something magic about tape echo. Be it an Echoplex, Space Echo, Copicat or what have you, that – literally – magnetic blend of warmth and often idiosyncratic unpredictability is what puts the tear in your eye and the emptiness in your wallet. Both Dan and I have been on a voyage of tape discovery these past months; smitten by the sounds, maddened by the maintenance and confused at the question of why modern pedal simulations just don’t stand up. Or do they? So in this first instalment of (probably) three, we indulge in the tape machines themselves. Consider it a context setting siting lap of what’s to come. In Part 2 we will delve a little more deeply into the single-head Echoplex side of things and a bunch of modern pedals, then follow that up in Part 3 with a similar treatment of the multi-head Space Echo approach. No, we haven’t looked at the European-style Wems/Meazzis etc… maybe that’s one for the future. At present we don’t own any. Off we go then… please enjoy the episode! Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below. Welcome to the show! In this episode, Daniel and I run through some classic effects pairings: two effect types that go together like peas and carrots. Bacon and eggs. Erm, op amps and clipping diodes? Anyway, no doubt there are many many more, but we’ll kick you off with these 11 to get you thinking and perhaps spark some ideas of your own. We’re doing this because it might not be immediately obvious that combinations of effects can be really cool; moreover that you can create some really lovely sounds without having to own every pedal under the sun. Please remember that we’re talking more about effects types than specific pedals here, so don’t worry if you don’t have the exact pedals: another of the same type will get you there! This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/VdlWBu3jrIA You want a wet/dry rig, but you’re not sure what amps will work well together? And what about power, gain, phase and digital latency? We answer all that and more…. Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below. Welcome to the show! In this episode, Dan and I return to one of our favourite subjects: wet/dry guitar rigs. Definitions differ as to what wet/dry actually means, but for us it is this: First off, you are using two separate guitar amplifiers…Compression, boost, EQ, wah, overdrive, fuzz (all the ‘dry’ effects) go to both amps.Modulation, delay and reverb (all the ‘wet’ effects) only goes to one amp: we call this the wet amp. The amp that doesn’t get the ‘wet’ effects we call the dry amp. It’s pretty simple in theory, but you need to be aware of a bunch of things when choosing your two amps such as volume, gain, phase and (related to phase), digital latency. There’s EQ as well of course, but that’s really a matter of personal preference and taste so we're not getting into it here. In this video we use a fairly standard signal path…Guitar, overdrives, modulation, delay, reverb, tremolo, amps Viewed as the wet/dry signal path it’s this (sorry we can’t draw a diagram here, but let’s try text…)DRY SIDE: Guitar, overdrives, SPLIT (Humdinger) to Amp 1WET SIDE: Guitar, overdrives, SPLIT (Humdinger), chorus, delay, reverb, trem to Amp 2 Hopefully that explains it! This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/K-YbjgNcMQ4 Many amps have separate clean and overdrive channels. We got there in the end. Welcome to the show! In this episode, Dan and I demonstrate what happens when you use common effects pedal types – boost, overdrive, modulation, delay/reverb – into the clean and dirty channels of your guitar amplifier. We also touch on the effects loop section of your amp and why you may or may not want to use that. Now, clearly there’s quite a bit of latitude in what we might call ‘overdrive’. In this case we’re using a mid-gained overdrive texture for our 'dirty' channel. The more gained you go, the more marked differences you will hear between clean and dirty channels in terms of how your effects react. For anyone wanting more on FX loops in general including stuff like the Four Cable Method (that Dan is basically using to patch the amp's preamp into G2), that is for another day - we'll dedicate a whole show to it. Meantime, there are on-screen graphics to explain what's going on, but if you're still confused…The effects order is as follows: Guitar, Boost, D&M Drive, Jam Ripply Fall, Maxon AD-9, Source Audio Collider, Amp Now look at the top row of G2. The four labels that start with ‘Preamp…’ refer to where the amp’s FX loop is sitting in the signal chain. When the red light is lit under… • Preamp After Drives: this means the boost and D&M Drive are hitting the amp preamp. ALL other effects are in the amp effects loop. • Preamp After Ripply Fall: Boost, D&M, Ripply Fall in the front, Delays in the amp effects loop • Preamp After Analogue Delay: Boost, D&M, Ripply Fall and Maxon AD-9 in the front of the amp, Source Audio Collider in the amp effects loop • Preamp After Everything: Everything in the front of the amp, nothing in the effects loop. We hope that helps! Enjoy the episode. This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/DcvKhl60I-o We demonstrate 10 ways to use reverb effects pedals for electric guitar to inspire new sounds and creativity in your playing. Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below. Reverb: pretty much the oldest effect in the book. It’s the sound of space, packed into a handy-sized box that can take your guitar from flat and direct, to colossal and cavernous! There was a time, not so long ago, that reverb for guitarists was that mysterious knob on your amp that you simply set to ‘not too much’. The last decade however has seen a veritable tidal wave of reverb pedals, offering us ever new ways to wash our tones clean… or dirty. Most of us are still confused. So join us as we run through 10 ideas designed to get you vibing on verb. Enjoy the episode! We demo and compare the Fulltone OCD V1.7, OCD V2 and the Custom Shop OCD GE overdrive pedals through a Marshall Plexi amp and Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/lYX8MJt4ulc The Fulltone OCD is without question among the most loved and successful guitar overdrive pedals of all time. Introduced in 2005 (we think!), its creator Mike Fuller wanted an OD pedal with plenty of dynamics and headroom, a relatively open EQ response and of course plenty of full, rich and dynamic overdrive. It is noted for responding well off the guitar’s volume pot and is used in pretty much every musical genre you can mention. There were a number of incremental changes to the design over the years from V1 to V1.7 - notably tweaking the midrange and adding germanium clipping diodes – then in 2017, Fuller surprised everyone with a V2, which is where we pick up the story in this video. Oh, and there's a Custom Shop GE version too. As a point of interest, this is also probably just about the best demonstration of what buffers to do your tone that we’ve stumbled on yet. This is the audio from our vide here: https://youtu.be/Yp61VmZM3q8 In this episode we dip a very tentative toe into the deep waters of ‘ambient’ sounds in guitar. As we discuss, putting labels on music is problematic from the off… but to us ‘ambient’ guitar is about building textures using combinations of delay and reverb, then manipulating those further with anything from modulation to pitch shifting to synthesis to looping etc etc etc… anything you can think of, basically. Soundscapes, textures, ambience, mood. Covering a whole movement in a hour seems at best foolish but this is That Pedal Show after all, where our sole intention is to spark some inspiration and questions in your minds for things you might like to try. So let’s see if that happens… If you like the backing track used in this video (we’ve called it ‘Ambiphoria’ and it was made by Fraser our assistant, predominantly with the Chase Bliss Audio Mood and Empress Zoia), it is available from That Pedal Show Store. https://www.thatpedalshowstore.com/collections/downloads Enjoy the episode! This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/7ACGOxWspeA In this episode we explore the useful and inspiring possibilities offered by parallel gain staging… among various other tangential observances. Most of us are familiar with series signal chains because that’s what happens when you connect any two pedals together: one flows into the other. Parallel is where the signal is split before two effects, then hits them separately and is mixed back together again afterwards. You might think that combining two pedals would produce the same results however you connect them. Well, not so, as we discover. For anyone asking how to combine two pedals in parallel and what you might need to do so…The Wetter Box by TheGigRig can do this. We’re not sure about other stuff, but whatever you choose, you need to be able to split the signal before the two devices you want to mix in parallel… then mix them together again afterwards. This is the audio from our vide here: https://youtu.be/3ftRqEQV8Dg In this episode we stumble around a general discussion on being heard when playing solos. A friend of Dan’s had asked him what he needed to think about tonally when starting to play guitar solos: it sparked an idea for a show. Many of the concepts we touch on here have been covered in previous episodes, but they’re always worth a re-look for the already-initiated and close to invaluable for anyone new to the subject. Gain, EQ, volume… and a bit on delay, rounded up with five tips for better solo tones. Enjoy the episode! This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/pmUq8uK_AL8 Nerd warning! This show is probably not for first-time viewers, nor anyone looking for quick and simple answers. This stuff is deep, fundamental… and yet all grounded (pun entirely intended) in basic electronics! We are delighted to once again welcome Simon Jarrett to the studio. Simon is the man behind Kingsley Amplifiers (and pedals), based in Maple Ridge, Canada. Dan and I have been consistently blown away with Kingsley’s range of pedals and preamps, partly because of their meticulous design and build quality and partly because they are imbued with Simon’s own personal musical connection with tremendous guitar tone. We attempt to unravel some of that in this show, talking about guitar electronics basics such as input impedance, capacitance in guitar controls (low pass filter) and amp/pedal input stages (coupling capacitor/high pass filter), gain stage biasing and all those interrelated factors that have a fundamental effect on your guitar sound… long before you get into to worrying about which of the 487 Tube Screamer clones to buy. It will be well over the heads of anyone looking for quick fixes or simple answers and advice… but absolutely fascinating for anyone who has been playing and tweaking for years and not quite connecting the dots of what’s actually happening (like me, Mick here). Massive thanks to Simon and his wife Christine for taking time out of their vacation to spend time nerding at That Pedal Show. Enjoy the episode. If you dare! Not here sunshine… Nevertheless, these are 11 ideas for using a compressor pedal, taking in some general compressor knowledge along the way as well as hearing a bunch of different compressor types. This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/NxH9jK3Ujgk In this episode we dig into the world of DC voltage and what it means for pedal operation and sound. Let’s begin with a warning and please forgive the upper case. PLEASE ONLY USE THE VOLTAGE STATED EXPLICITLY IN THE PEDAL MANUAL AND NOTHING ELSE! This is because most pedals are designed to run on a specific voltage: usually 9V DC for most stompboxes. However, some pedals are designed to work on varying voltages, usually between 9 and 18 volts and sometimes up to 24. It will say so in the pedal manual or on the manufacturer website. If i doesn’t, don’t do it. Dead pedals are often smelly and always useless for everything except throwing at bandmates for playing the wrong parts. (DUCK!)Moving on, it is also possible to starve a pedal of voltage until it gets to the point where it simply won’t work. This is a key characteristic of certain fuzz sounds. So we get into all that in the video and some of the side issues and discussions. This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/m49jK-49BFA In this episode we discuss the concept of ‘Always-On’ pedals with some practical examples of how you might use them. Lots of people use a particular overdrive or preamp; perhaps a compressor or a slapback echo as their always-on pedal. We propose that they fall into four basic categories that may be functional, tonal or both. 1. Buffers; 2: Tone/EQ shaping; 3: Gain and dynamics; 4:A specific effect, eg reverb, delay etc.Clearly you can use any pedal as an always-on pedal, but here were are attempting to narrow the discussion a little bit in our area of all-round rock, blues and roots playing, and offer some useful ways to proceed if you’re new to this train of thought. No doubt there will be plenty of questions arising – Ladbrokes has great odds on a million questions about buffers again. We’ll address it in Monday’s VCQ. But if you’re confused just remeber three things: 1. Buffers give you noticeable high-end and presence back if your signal chain is suffering from capacitance-induced dullness. 2.… Make most vintage overdrives and fuzzes sound rubbish when placed before them. 3. If you use loads of true-bypass pedals chained together and no loop switcher, you might benefit from one… Try it before and after your overdrives. We prefer them after. And, 'What about EQ pedals? Surely they are a prime example of an always-on pedal?' Yes. We talk about EQ, but not necessarily in the context of a specific EQ pedal. Anyway, enjoy the show… Pedals & stuff in this episode… • TheGigRig Three2Onehttps://www.thegigrig.com/three2one • TC Electronic PolyTune 2 MiniUK & Europe: http://bit.ly/2jKaukTUSA: http://bit.ly/2k2Gu4BAustralia: http://bit.ly/2vn6b6N • Benson Preamp (special edition orange)UK & Europe: http://bit.ly/2YdumSeUSA: http://bit.ly/2WBF44vAustralia: http://bit.ly/2VVJu9l • Fender Level Set BufferUK & Europe: http://bit.ly/2VsxKeTUSA: http://bit.ly/2J1covvAustralia: • Taurus Servohttp://www.taurus-amp.pl/guitar/effects/white-line/servo.html • JHS CloverUK & Europe: http://bit.ly/2JBB546USA: http://bit.ly/2E3D1PAAustralia: http://bit.ly/2W1srTu • Keeley D&M DriveUK & Europe: http://bit.ly/2oTblU1USA: http://bit.ly/2rfACMdAustralia: http://bit.ly/2pUDUAE • Snouse Black Box OD2UK & Europe: http://bit.ly/2VCE9QL • Origin Effects Cali76 Stacked EditionUK & Europe: http://bit.ly/2vMuSdGAustralia: http://bit.ly/2HbYgAr • Boss DM-2w Waza Craft DelayUK & Europe: http://bit.ly/2hzsothAustralia: http://bit.ly/2vT8ulc • Catalinbread Topanga Spring ReverbUK & Europe: http://bit.ly/2mj3leKAustralia: http://bit.ly/2qVOTyJ • TheGigRig G2https://www.thegigrig.com/g2 * Why do we have preferred retailer links? This is the audio for our video here: https://youtu.be/YSf3m9siUwo In this episode we take a very gentle stroll through some of the issues you might face when there are two guitars in the band. Clearly this is an almost endless topic so we’re starting with the really basic stuff. We’ve all been there with volume struggles, tones not working together, poor definition of parts… and worse than all of that: not knowing what to do about it. So Dan and I talk through some ideas that may help before indulging in some petit jammagé at the end. Where the gremlins begin… SORRY ABOUT THE DEAD CAMERASWe had a massive whoopsie-daisy in this episode with cameras. Particularly annoying as we are actually doing something different and no doubt you’ll assume there’s some kind of foul play going on. It's not the case, we just lost media from two cards. Arrrrggggg!!!!Before the cameras die, Mick’s guitar is panned slightly left; Dan’s slightly right. During the jams however you’ll hear Mick right and Dan left because that makes more sense when you’re looking at our pedalboards. We didn't edit the jams at all so they are a bit meandering. We left it all in as the sounds are interesting even if the playing isn't ha! HOW DID YOU MAKE THE BACKING TRACKS?I used the Drummer in Apple Logic to create some grooves. Then I called up the loop library in and simply dragged in some bass parts. During the filming I was playing it from my laptop over our PA speakers, enabling Dan and I to jam over. I then simply put the tracks underneath the show audio, lined it up, and did a super basic mix. That’s it. Enjoy the episode, we hope it helps spark some ideas and inspiration to play with other humans! (Or machines, ahem).
