This week on The Tone Mob Podcast, Blake Wyland sits down with Steve Cobucci — guitarist, gear junkie, and founding member of Wolves at the Gate — to talk about the beautiful mess that is making music for a living. Steve kicks things off with the story of his first guitar: a classical hand-me-down from his mom, followed by a hard-earned Gibson Les Paul — because if you're gonna make noise, you might as well do it right. From his beloved B-52 tube amp to his first Tube Screamer, Steve proves that chasing tone starts early and never really stops. Blake and Steve rip into the realities of starting a band in college, the rollercoaster of recording in a real studio, and why having a good drummer is like finding a unicorn. They don't shy away from the sticky stuff either — managing egos, screwing up communication, and how growing up (just a little) changes everything you thought you knew about music and life. They swap war stories about live shows, argue the merits of production quality, and marvel at how revisiting old albums can hit you harder the second time around. Plus, Steve drops some hard-earned wisdom about why you should find your own sound, keep it loose, and remember: if you're not having fun, you're probably doing it wrong. Whether you're a guitarist, a music nerd, or just someone trying to make a little magic without losing your mind, this episode's got something for you. Huge shocker incoming: Zach Broyles made a Tube Screamer. The Mythos Envy Pro Overdrive is Zach's take on the green apple of his eye, with some special tweaks including increased output, more drive sounds, and a low-end boost option. Does this mean he can clear out his collection of TS-9s? Of course not. This time on Dipped in Tone, Rhett and Zach welcome Tyler Bryant, the Texas-bred and Nashville-based rocker who has made waves with his band the Shakedown, who Rhett credits as one of his favorite groups. Bryant, it turns out, is a TS-head himself, having learned to love the pedal thanks to its being found everywhere in Texas guitar circles.Bryant shares how he scraped together a band after dropping out of high school and moving to Nashville, including the rigors of 15-hour drives for 30-minute sets in a trusty Ford Expedition. He's lived the dream (or nightmare, depending on the day) and has the wisdom to show it.Throughout the chat, the gang covers modeling amps and why modern rock bands still need amps on stage; the ins and outs of recording-gear rabbit holes and getting great sounds; and the differences between American and European audiences. Chasing Tone - Guitar Podcast About Gear, Effects, Amps and Tone
Brian, Blake, and Richard are joined by the legendary Jay Leonard J for Episode 514 of the Chasing Tone PodcastWe start off with some exclusive hair clipping tips from the super talented Jay Leonard J and this eventually turns into a discussion about gain clipping and Wampler's latest release, the Wampler Mofetta. Brian had an idea one day. He loved the Ibanez MT-10 Mostortion but wondered what would happen if he used MOSFETS for clipping. The Mofetta is the culmination of his rumination! Brian asks Jay about his creative process when it comes to pedal demos and he gives us an awesome candid insight into his flow. Is the Tubescreamer the ultimate wingman pedal? Jay thinks so and has a compelling case to consider and Blake is in an educating mood. Are you a fan of the Beach Boys? A number of cool products were released in the last week that were officially licensed by the Beach Boys and the guys discuss them. Richard asks Jay about his musical career and he tells us a wonderful tale of how it all began with a special guitar. Jay takes us on an international journey with his early career before he tells us about how an unconventional piece of equipment became part of his demo rig and how he became a stunt double for the top martial artist in Hong Kong. You are not going to want to miss this episode, Jay is hilarious and hugely interesting, and he joins us on Patreon too for some amazing stories that involve international diplomatic peril! Chasing Tone - Guitar Podcast About Gear, Effects, Amps and Tone
Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for an all-new episode of the Chasing Tone Podcast!Brian has a new piece of gear and he is very happy with it so tells us all about it - could it mean the introduction of a new form factor for Wampler gear? Meanwhile Richard isn't feeling himself (turns out he had Covid brewing but didn't realise it) and Blake has a guitar mystery. Do you hang your guitars or put them on a stand? The guys discuss the pros and cons before Brian makes a cannibalistic confession. Blake has been playing with the Wampler Metaverse Delay plugin and tells us about a neat trick he has discovered before further discussion over delay algorithms and delay pedals commences. Richard asks the question that everybody has been asking once again and Brian considers the commercial implications of his thought process. Does the artwork for an album still have relevance in the digital streaming world? Richard has recently watched a documentary about Hipgnosis, famous album cover designers to the greatest bands of their era, and is equally inspired and moved. He then makes a random confession and walks into a trap. Brians special bakes, Brad Paisley, Germanium ICs, Mr Dynamite, Crazy tube circuits...it's all in this week's Chasing Tone! This episode is sponsored by the fine folk at Stringjoy.comThanks to all our supporters - you are awesome! We are on Patreon now too!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/chasingtonepodcast)Brian's new online courses are here:http://www.guitarpedalcourse.comAwesome Merch and DIY mods:https://modyourownpedal.com/collections/booksFind us at:https://www.wamplerpedals.com/https://www.instagram.com/WamplerPedals/https://www.facebook.com/groups/wamplerfanpage/Youtube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdVrg4Wl3vjIxonABn6RfWwContact us at: podcast@wamplerpedals.comSupport the show
It's the most wonderful time of year: the “year in gear” season is finally upon us, and we're celebrating with this special in-person episode of Dipped In Tone. Zach and Rhett gang up at Zach's place to rundown the best of the best of musical excellence and oddities in 2023.The guys start in with their favorite stompboxes. Rhett tips his hat to Old Blood Noise Endeavors' Beam Splitter, Hologram's Chroma Console, and Universal Audio's 1176 pedal, which he runs as a hard-clipped overdrive. Some might say it sounds shitty, but as Zach notes, “Shitty is pretty in the mix!” Zach's “boring” picks include the Nobels ODR-1, his collection of new Tube Screamer variants, and the Poly Beebo. Along the way, they talk about the magic of going back to old gear they'd written off in their younger days, and dig into the root causes of Zach's discomfort with more experimental playing approaches.Rhett sings praises for the new Orange OR30 and remembers its early 2000s predecessor, the AD30, and he and Zach agree on the superior, “8K” quality of Two-Rock's current offerings over nearly every other amp on the market. Out of this year's axes, Rhett favors both Fender's Vintera II '60s Bass VI and the Mexican-made Jason Isbell Custom Telecaster, plus the Collings 470 JL—Julian Lage's signature. Zach spotlights his PRS SE Silver Sky, and a gorgeous Gibson Custom Shop 1959 ES-335 Reissue.Be sure to stick around for the end, when the duo call out the year's biggest disappointment in gear, which Zach describes as “baby's first modeler.”Big thanks to StewMac for sponsoring this episode. Host Chris Shiflett starts things off with a discussion on the musical context McCready emerged from. “If you didn't have this punk rock background, then you were looked down upon,” remembers McCready. As he explains, his upbringing was less punk rock and more Cub Scouts until he picked up the guitar. He and PJ rhythm guitarist Stone Gossard preferred the likes of Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, and after Gossard caught McCready shredding Stevie Ray Vaughan licks at a party, he phoned him up to start a two-guitar band. “I could only do what I knew how to do, which was play leads,” says McCready. A major turning point came for McCready when he witnessed Muddy Waters' performance in The Last Waltz. “It seemed like he could do more in one note than I was doing with all these thousands of notes,” he says. The observation led him to give up shredding and move in an emotion-driven, blues-rooted direction. That spirit drives the soaring solo on “Alive,” which McCready cut with a 1962 Japanese Reissue Stratocaster, a Tubescreamer, and a Marshall JCM800. McCready reveals how Jimi Hendrix's sounds on “Machine Gun” influenced his own performance. After the lesson, McCready answers questions about how “Alive” has changed over the years, Eddie Vedder's punk-ish rhythm playing, and why he smashed a Strat onstage last year. Best of all? Shifty finally gets a proper “guitar store lick” from his guest. Click below to subscribe to the podcast! My guest this week is Kevin Paul, who started in the music business as a DJ, but then discovered sound engineering and immediately knew that was his true calling. Starting at Soho Studios in London, he later moved to the Kink's own Konk Studios. At Konk, he worked alongside a bevy of successful producers and engineers, as well as bands such as The Kinks, Galliano, Terrorvision, UFO and Elastica. After working on archiving the Depeche Mode back catalogue in 1994, he was offered an engineering role at Mute Records' in-house studio, which eventually lead to a position as Head Engineer. Since 2008, Kevin has been in charge of mixing and remixing the exclusive performances at the coveted iTunes Festival UK and Germany events. He has mixed over 100 artists to date including David Bowie, Adele, Ed Sheeran, Alicia Keys, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Calvin Harris, Foo Fighters, Jack White, Linkin Park, Florence & The Machine, Deadmau5, David Guetta, Norah Jones, Oasis, Mumford & Sons, Paul Weller and many more. During the interview we spoke about the producer that influenced him the most, why he worries about immersive audio being accepted, his views on audio education, where mixing and mastering will be in 10 years, and much more. I spoke with Kevin via Zoom from his studio in the UK. On the intro I'll take a look at Spotify skip rates, the one super-important metric that's still a secret, and AI-driven ChatGPT codes up an Ibanez Tube Screamer plugin.
A Boss RE-202 Space Echo … on a vocal mix? A hot pink overdrive, treble boost, and echo in one pedal named SusMaryOsep—a word Filipino mothers shout at troublesome children? An Artificial Blonde—with hat's off to Madison Cunningham—that's a slightly pitched vibrato? Line 6's Catalyst modeling amp—sexy or not? Amp plugins from Neural DSP and Line 6? Tone King's royal-sounding Imperial MkII and Soldano's SLO-30? Metallica in a box (Caroline Guitar Company's Crom)? A Pigtronix Star Eater fuzz that looks like a wild berry Pop Tart? And have you seen the new Empress Para EQ and Origin Effects' M-EQ Driver? Hosts Rhett Shull and Zach Broyles run down their top gear of the year. Plus, dueling Les Pauls and the eternal question: to refret or not to refret. And is a bone nut really better than nylon? And what's a Dutchburst, anyway? Tired of questions? Well, Rhett and Zach also talk post-Thanksgiving turkey. And Zack tells about his 6-string family reunion with his first guitar and flashes the new Mythos Pedals Hephaestus, named for the Greek god of blacksmithing. What else? (Sorry, that's another question!) Rhett opens up a box of spankin' new pickups from Stew-Mac, and they discuss the online screeds and screeches trailing their conversation about tone woods with Paull Reed Smith in the previous episode. And yes, they do dip a rig, submitted for dissection by “Dipped in Tone” listener Kenny, whose '90s rock setup—with stitched-rose guitar straps—sparks yet another argument about the merits of the Tube Screamer and the virtues of the Phase 90 and Phase 45 versus the Small Stone.Big thanks to StewMac for sponsoring this episode. Chasing Tone - Guitar Podcast About Gear, Effects, Amps and Tone
Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for an all-new episode of the Chasing Tone Podcast! It seems that a certain British gentleman made a rather unfortunate mistake in the misty haze of the morning after, and he explains his calamitous schoolboy error in a single improvised monologue of utter idiocy. He will never live this down - well not while Brian and Blake draw breath at least. Richard makes up for this slightly by telling us about his Birthday where he decided to go roadtesting a few incredibly expensive guitars at Andertons. Brian confesses that he is pickup stupid and then lets us in to a BIG secret about a guitar he may or may not have on order. Richard has finally bought a guitar, and yes it is that one, it is also one that Brian is disgusted by, and Blake insults his new purchase - or does he? Brian is also thinking about going wireless and talks a bit about his gigging setup and then of course the talk morphs into a bacon based discussion. Blake's been playing with a new Tube Screamer and he likes it. Yes you read that right, a Tube Screamer that Blake likes. Brian is curious about the unique features of the circuitry and so Blake breaks this down in great detail and Brian goes into a deep dive on tubescreamer circuits...and then we look at the Mike McCready exploding guitar video that one or two of you may have seen...Flute effects, Expensive guitars, Brent Mason, Subliminal ASMR, Tappety Tap sensors, Sausage or Bacon...it's all in this week's Chasing Tone!We are on Patreon now too!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/chasingtonepodcast)Awesome Merch and DIY mods:https://modyourownpedal.com/collections/booksFind us at:https://www.wamplerpedals.com/https://www.instagram.com/WamplerPedals/https://www.facebook.com/groups/wamplerfanpage/Youtube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdVrg4Wl3vjIxonABn6RfWwContact us at: podcast@wamplerpedals.comSupport the show
Weitere Infos: www.florian-poeschko.de

Chris and Jody walk thru the steps of dealing with High Gain guitar sounds. Which amps are good choices? What if you're using amp sims? Mic'ing an actual cabinet, or using IR's? Why too much gain may hurt you, why you should consider a Tube Screamer, and how the mid's can actually be your friend. It's also not unlikely that there will be some nonsense discussed.

Brian and Blake are back and once again joined by Wampler’s own Richard Oliver in this weeks episode.Did you catch Phoebe Bridger on SNL? Did you see her attempt to destroy her guitar? The guys have seen it and share their amusing reactions. Then there is the guy who has made a guitar out of his deceased uncle’s skeleton. That’s right. You can imagine the reaction our trio has on this one. England has their own version of Phil Spector? Richard recently discovered that notorious history of Joe Meek and his possible ties to a gear company. TikTok may be okay, social media burnout and a tube screamer controversy. Sonic Renegades: Exploring Revolutionary Guitar Effects Pedals
In this episode, we cover one of our favorite Tube Screamer inspired pedals. This "clean" overdrive pedal doesn't come off as "mid-rangey" or "muddy" making it a wonderful option.
Dans cet épisode, Mathieu April et François Gagnon comparent les chansons Crazy de Patsy Cline, Aerosmith et Gnarls Barkley. Ils parlent donc de Luca Paltrinieri, les meilleures chansons de Willie Nelson, l'entretien de Trigger, la guitare de Wille Nelson, 1994 en musique, Sabotage, Punk Rock is Bullshit, Tube Screamer, Cee Lo Green, Damon Albarn, The Grey Album, Bob Dylan, Guided by Voices (bien sûr), Pet Shop Boys, C.R.A.Z.Y., Lars Gotrich et Yvan Ponton. Sonic Renegades: Exploring Revolutionary Guitar Effects Pedals
In this episode, we dive into this compact overdrive pedal. This classic reissue doesn't disappoint even for it's small size.
"It wasn't like I was looking to make pedals my career, at all… it was just, 'I bet I can sell one to buy parts for this other one.'" –Robert Keeley, on his early work On this week’s podcast, we talk to Robert Keeley of Keeley Electronics. When it comes to the world of effects pedals, Keeley is, quite simply, a legend. During our conversation, he recounts his early days flipping hi-fi gear he'd find at estate sales; explains why he never became an amp builder; outlines the importance of a great education for all of his employees; and walks us through the lifecycle of a pedal currently in development (the ECCOS delay/looper). Whether you know Keeley for his old Tube Screamer mods or for his more recent, digital signal processing effects, you're bound to learn something during this hour-long chat. This episode is sponsored by Retrofret Vintage Guitars and Mono Cases.
This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/7ACGOxWspeA In this episode we explore the useful and inspiring possibilities offered by parallel gain staging… among various other tangential observances. Most of us are familiar with series signal chains because that’s what happens when you connect any two pedals together: one flows into the other. Parallel is where the signal is split before two effects, then hits them separately and is mixed back together again afterwards. You might think that combining two pedals would produce the same results however you connect them. Well, not so, as we discover. For anyone asking how to combine two pedals in parallel and what you might need to do so…The Wetter Box by TheGigRig can do this. We’re not sure about other stuff, but whatever you choose, you need to be able to split the signal before the two devices you want to mix in parallel… then mix them together again afterwards. This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/pmUq8uK_AL8 Nerd warning! This show is probably not for first-time viewers, nor anyone looking for quick and simple answers. This stuff is deep, fundamental… and yet all grounded (pun entirely intended) in basic electronics! We are delighted to once again welcome Simon Jarrett to the studio. Simon is the man behind Kingsley Amplifiers (and pedals), based in Maple Ridge, Canada. Dan and I have been consistently blown away with Kingsley’s range of pedals and preamps, partly because of their meticulous design and build quality and partly because they are imbued with Simon’s own personal musical connection with tremendous guitar tone. We attempt to unravel some of that in this show, talking about guitar electronics basics such as input impedance, capacitance in guitar controls (low pass filter) and amp/pedal input stages (coupling capacitor/high pass filter), gain stage biasing and all those interrelated factors that have a fundamental effect on your guitar sound… long before you get into to worrying about which of the 487 Tube Screamer clones to buy. It will be well over the heads of anyone looking for quick fixes or simple answers and advice… but absolutely fascinating for anyone who has been playing and tweaking for years and not quite connecting the dots of what’s actually happening (like me, Mick here). Massive thanks to Simon and his wife Christine for taking time out of their vacation to spend time nerding at That Pedal Show. Enjoy the episode. If you dare! This is the audio for our video here: https://youtu.be/pMpJuFJBTsQ Okay, despite the slightly click-baity title, this really is not a video for beginners. Or at least it’s not a video for anyone looking for quick and easy answers because we’ve spent decades and umpteen thousands of pounds finding out that there really is no simple answer to the question, ‘What overdrive pedal should I buy?’ However, we do have a better question for you that will be infinitely more helpful: ‘What do I want an overdrive pedal to do?’ We propose in this video that there are four common answers to that question and as such, help you significantly narrow down your OD pedal choices. But we haven’t included //insert every pedal in the world here//. No. This video is about concepts and understanding – gain structure, headroom, dynamics, the guitar-pedal-amp ecosystem because, well, head back to the first paragraph. TLDR? TLDW? We understand, but just know this: an hour and 17 watching this video, and a few others on our channel will save you years of getting it ‘wrong’, we promise. Enjoy. You see something shiny on the interwebs and have to have it. So, you get it.. but then there is something new/better/shinier/warmer/cooler available that's guaranteed to make you sound better because hey, that Pete Thorn (or insert your favorite youtube demo-er here) video sounded A-MAZING, and you have to havethat, so the old piece of gear that you loved last week takes a back seat. Sound familiar? Brian and Blake talk about it. You would be surprised just how many prototypes Brian makes to produce a Wampler pedal. It is easy to look at a schematic and say "That's a tubescreamer" based on its components, but that may not always be accurate. The guys explain why. And you hear this sort of comment quite a bit: "Hendrix or SRV didn't need all this gear to get their sound." It is a conversation worth having, so we did.
Alberta – overdrive that’s getting it real The Alberta overdrive pedal was one of the first pedals T-Rex produced, and it crystallizes just about everything this small Danish company is all about – tone, tone, tone. It’s not about Alberta’s controls. They’re plain minimalistic, with just three knobs – gain, level and tone – in ad-dition to the ON/OFF switch. What sets this pedal apart is its phenomenal sound, no matter how you set the controls. The blues and beyond Some people say Alberta was born to play the blues – and it certainly does deliver that vintage tubey warmth that bluesmen are always looking for. But T-Rex would never try to tell you what kind of music to play. We recommend Alberta for everything from Muddy Waters to White Stripes – and we guarantee that this pedal will deliver no matter what kind of music you play. How do they do it? Ever wonder what makes T-Rex pedals like the Alberta overdrive so different from what other companies? If you ever visited our offices in Vejle, Denmark, you’d understand straight away. We’re not a company that makes music equipment. We’re sonic craftsmen who have built a company to deliver the tone we’ve always looked for in our own gear.
