Mike details the Cloud FinOps lifecycle by first attributing organizational cloud spend through showbacks and chargebacks to individual teams and products. JR describes the two levers available for optimization once an organization understands where they're spending their cloud budget. They discuss complexities that arise from virtualized infrastructure and techniques to attribute cloud usage to the correct owners, and close with some recommendations for engineering leaders who are getting started on cloud FinOps strategy.

Kay Oliver: New UK Treasury chief insists Liz Truss retains control

The new U.K. Treasury chief on Sunday insisted Prime Minister Liz Truss retains control of her government despite having to roll back her signature economic policies weeks into her premiership. Jeremy Hunt was drafted in to lead the Treasury after Truss sacked Kwasi Kwarteng amid rising pressure following the turbulent market reaction to the new administration's “mini-budget.” “The prime minister's in charge,” Hunt, a former foreign and health secretary, told the BBC when he was asked whether he now held all the power at Downing Street. Truss and Kwarteng had slowly unraveled key elements of their economic vision, including tax cuts for top earners and a halt on corporation tax rises, before the prime minister gave in to financial market instability and tanking polling figures and fired Kwarteng. Hunt has now said taxation will rise and public spending will shrink, despite Britain's growing cost-of-living crisis. He said he had been surprised to receive the call to return to the Cabinet, but he was “honored” to join the government as he shared Truss' desire to prioritize economic growth. “She has changed the way we're going to get there, but she has not changed the destination, which is to get the country growing,” Hunt said. It remains unclear if Truss, who throughout this summer's leadership campaign secured the support of a majority of Conservative Party members but not of its lawmakers, can ward off any plots to oust her. Tory lawmaker Robert Halfon told Sky News on Sunday that many colleagues remained unhappy and the situation “has to improve”. Opposition leader Keir Starmer has pressed the Labour Party's call for an immediate general election to restore stability, saying the Conservatives are “at the end of the road”. Hunt has suggested an election is not imminent election, saying Truss will be judged on how her government performs over the next 18 months. The Conservatives want to win back the trust of the public before any national vote. Recent polls have placed the Conservative Party at a vote share of around 25%, a far cry from the 42.4% share they received in December 2019 which handed then-leader Boris Johnson a commanding majority in Parliament. The current prime minister argued she still held credibility during a four-question news conference on Friday when she announced the appointment of Hunt. - by Mike Fuller, APSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Principal and Technology Transformation Practice Leader Mike Spires talks with Principal and Technology Transformation Cloud Leader Mike Fuller and Senior Director and Digital Transformation Strategist Jay Ruffin about the rationales, benefits, and best practices for multi-cloud environments.Show Notes:Welcome to The Hackett Group's “Business Excelleration Podcast,” where week after week we hear from experts on how to avoid obstacles, manage detours and celebrate milestones on the journey to world-class performance. Today's episode is hosted by Mike Spires, who leads the Technology Transformation practice at The Hackett Group. He serves as the emcee for a conversation on what multi-cloud is, some of its advantages and lessons learned from implementing multi-cloud environments. Mike's guests for the discussion are Mike Fuller and Jay Ruffin, who are, respectively, the cloud lead and cloud partnership lead in The Hackett Group's Technology Transformation practice.Turning first to what multi-cloud is and why it is often confused with the hybrid cloud, Mike Fuller explains that the hybrid cloud involves a company using both on-premise data centers and cloud providers. Multi-cloud, on the other hand, involves using multiple cloud providers. The benefits of employing multi-cloud strategies are often simply the ability to best fit a company's aims.  Sometimes a company may choose a multi-cloud approach in order to put applications and workloads closer to customers. Multi-cloud strategies can help with pricing and workload management, and in the case of global companies, enable compliance with data storage regulation.Multi-cloud strategies also impact areas of performance such as latency and agility. They bolster latency by meeting customer preferences and ultimately enabling customer-centricity. They foster agility by placing workloads in environments built around product capabilities. Multi-cloud also helps address the problem of unplanned outages. From a return on investment (ROI) perspective, The Hackett Group studies on cloud performance demonstrate that not only is ROI improved 8%-9% by using multi-cloud, but accuracy of forecasting is improved by 8%-12%. Multi-cloud enables companies to deliver benefits more quickly, and it is safer from a security standpoint than hosted on-premise environments. It also enables improvement in reducing the number of security incidents and mean time to detect them over single-cloud environments.      Of course, when putting a multi-cloud strategy in place, a company must determine what workloads work best in what cloud environments. Different workloads work best with different cloud providers, and in making proper matches, companies must consider things like speed of innovation, staff levels, security levels, and proximity to the customer. In the instance of mobility apps, it's helpful for performance and scale to work with providers in different geographic locations. Ultimately, the ideal cloud environment match is a fit-for-purpose solution strategically geared toward the application and/or data of the workload being matched. Moving forward, the group considers what industries are adapting better and more quickly to cloud use cases, and which industries are lagging behind. Telecommunications, software, and financial services companies are probably the most experienced in leveraging and having success with the cloud, whereas some in the public sector and in consumer goods are less experienced.  The industries generally lagging behind in cloud use are those with less experience in digital transformation. It takes three to four years to really get a handle on cloud use, and cloud is a sort of underbelly for digital transformation.A complete list of show notes is available here for download.

The Hackett Group Senior Director and Global IT Advisory Practice Leader Chris Key talks with Tech Transformation Practice Principal Michael Fuller, Senior Director Jay Ruffin, and Tech Practice Principal Scott Holland about key findings from The Hackett Group's recent Cloud Migration Study, the largest-ever study of its type.Show NotesWelcome to The Hackett Group's Business Excelleration Podcast, where — week after week —  we hear from experts on how to avoid obstacles, manage detours, and celebrate milestones on the journey to world-class performance. Today's episode is hosted by Chris Key, Global Advisory Practice Leader at the Hackett Group. His guests are Mike Fuller, Principal in the Tech Transformation Practice, Jay Ruffin, Senior Director, and Principal Scott Holland. The focus of today's discussion is the results of the largest ever cloud migration study conducted to date. This study was conducted in October-December of 2021 and represented a wide demographic of global companies ranging from $500 million to over $30 billion. The goal was to identify real business value generated by the migration of infrastructure and application to the Cloud. Of the 1,000+ companies that participated, data was collected from 4,000 applications pre and post Cloud. They considered cost, availability, scalability and operations. About 82% of the companies were multi-cloud.The biggest difference between the top and average performers was their approach to technology. Top performers saw technology as part of their DNA and course strategy, while the averages were just looking for a way to reduce cost. Scott believes it important to recognize that the value of cloud migration goes way beyond cost and scalability. The Cloud promotes availability, agility and ease of operation. In terms of top performers, they were more likely to migrate IT infrastructure and security and migrated much sooner than everybody else. There are four primary ways which organizations are migrating workloads to the cloud. Companies that do the work up front see much more benefit as compared to companies who go to the lift and shift path. At the end of the day, cloud is the basis of digital operations. The most common goal among all performers was reducing cost. Among top performers, however, the most common goal was to utilize the cloud to enhance their current services and products. Top performers are migrating 52% more apps than others. The cloud is becoming the norm and those who don't migrate will likely be left behind.Referring back to our key issues study, Jay defined the Cloud as a foundation for many of these goals. For example, it allows for faster time to value, cost efficiency, engagement from anywhere, and much more. Top performers were able to reduce their infrastructure spend by 37% compared to average performers' 12%. This significance all comes back to how they manage their portfolios overall. Shifting to security and the influx in data breaches and ransomware attacks, Mike speaks to the board's watchful eye of these issues. After cloud migration, organizations on average saw a 44% reduction in cyberattacks, while top performers' improvements were even larger.A complete list of show notes is available here for download.

A slightly different episode this week as first we join Charles at Harpole Playing Fields where NTFC Women are taking on Notts County and then we're in the pub with Charles, Neil and Fan Club member, Mike Fuller. Northampton Town WomenWhile we have been huge champions of the Cobblers' women's team for the last couple of years, we've not that often managed to get to see them play live. On Sunday, Charles popped over to Harpole to witness the team's return to league action. James Wiles provides us with a report from the game and post match interview with managers Lou and Josh. In The PubWith Christmas just days away, Charles and Neil agreed to meet up in the pub for a drink and a chat about the Cobblers with Fan Club member, Mike Fuller. While there may have been no Cobblers 1st team game this week, there's still plenty to talk about including circuit breakers, mandatory vaccinations for players and the East Stand. PostbagThis week's question comes from John Mantle who asks: When/if the east stand is developed, how will the away allocation work as obviously currently a proportion of the east is given over to away supporters. The point being, I would be interested in a box for either matches or even a season, but would not want the box behind an away following! My understanding is that boxes would run along the entire stand, maybe this won't be the case? Struggling to see how this would work, as in the 1st division, many teams would bring with them more fans that the 980 or so housed in the south stand, so would for most home games have to give up space in the new east stand. I really do think that the east stand should be completed as a much wider plan for the stadium, but sadly can't see this happening. Oddly, I'm amazed that the club don't reach out to businesses to support financially, and have naming rights for example? Clemson's first brewery has been a long time coming, and a long time working for the two co-owners who continue to juggle demanding full-time jobs in addition to getting Kite Hill Brewing Company off the ground after opening their doors in early July. The Clemson Dubcast goes on-site to interview the key players, including master brewer Mike Fuller. An avid Clemson fan and longtime Tigerillustrated.com subscriber, Fuller spent time out west and then the better part of nine years in Asheville. As he worked his way up the brewing ranks, he had a dream to return to Clemson and give the city its first brewery. Last December he answered an ad posted by co-owners Bobby Congdon and Bryon Leggett. Congdon is the assistant director of Clemson's Sonoco Institute of Packaging Design and Graphics. He's also married with two children. "I'm making it work now, working through some annual leave," Congdon said. "And I have a forgiving boss that likes beer. So that helps." Leggett has a background in chemical engineering and works in business development for a Wisconsin-based contract manufacturer, a job that consumes 50 hours a week by itself. He said he's worked 90 to 100 hours a week the last few months. He's married with a 9-month-old infant at home. Leggett and Congdon met as students while working for Clemson's student radio station. They both graduated in 1998. "Our vision is to have a community gathering space with something for everybody," Leggett said. "So it's not just about the beer." Congdon started home-brewing in 2005 inside an apartment not far from Kite Hill's present location in Patrick Square. "By the third batch we started talking about how cool it would be to open a brewery in Clemson," Congdon said. "That persisted for years and years, but common sense said 'Don't do that. That's insane.' But about four years ago I sent an e-mail to Bryon. I had been drinking beer, and I got the idea: 'We should actually do this!'"

We demo and compare the Fulltone OCD V1.7, OCD V2 and the Custom Shop OCD GE overdrive pedals through a Marshall Plexi amp and Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. This is the audio from our video here: https://youtu.be/lYX8MJt4ulc The Fulltone OCD is without question among the most loved and successful guitar overdrive pedals of all time. Introduced in 2005 (we think!), its creator Mike Fuller wanted an OD pedal with plenty of dynamics and headroom, a relatively open EQ response and of course plenty of full, rich and dynamic overdrive. It is noted for responding well off the guitar’s volume pot and is used in pretty much every musical genre you can mention. There were a number of incremental changes to the design over the years from V1 to V1.7 - notably tweaking the midrange and adding germanium clipping diodes – then in 2017, Fuller surprised everyone with a V2, which is where we pick up the story in this video. Oh, and there's a Custom Shop GE version too. As a point of interest, this is also probably just about the best demonstration of what buffers to do your tone that we’ve stumbled on yet. Mike: Hi, I'm Mike Fuller. Kari: And I'm Kari Aguila. Mike: And we're actors on the improvised audio fiction podcast, “Broken, Alaska”. Broken is a tiny town. Kari: Only 71 people… Mike: It's small, but it's full of stories. The show revolves around the people who live in Broken, and the ways that they handle the stresses of living in such a secluded place. Kari: And just like in a real small town, there are people from all walks of life and all political ideologies, and a lot of the richness of the story we create comes from those differences. One of the greatest things about “Broken, Alaska” is that the neighbors often disagree, argue even, but they still have to really rely on each other. You can't unfriend anyone in Broken just because they drive you nuts – you'll still see them in the grocery store tomorrow. The characters really are like family. Mike: The good and the bad… Kari: Broken, Alaska began several years ago. We were all taking an improv class with Kay Lavergne Jaz, and one night at the end of a class Kay said, “Ok, pick the name of a town.” Somebody said, “Broken, Alaska.” Kay said, “Ok, one at a time go on stage, decide a name and a job for your character, and just run with whatever happens.” And one-by-one we all created the characters and the town of Broken. Mike: It was a really amazing scene. Kari: It was! It was one of those moments when you think, “This is good!” So, we wound up going back to Broken whenever we had a few extra minutes in class. Mike: Then about 2 years ago, a new radio station here in Seattle asked me to come up with some original programming. I'd worked in radio for a lot of years, and I thought, wouldn't it be great if we could do Broken as a radio drama? Kari: Everybody was on board. Mike: Yeah. And all those characters we'd been playing in class, pretty much became the characters you'll hear on the podcast now. Kari: Broken, Alaska is an improvised show, though I do write a basic story outline for each episode just to keep us on track, and to give us some landmarks to hit during each scene. For example, I'll write: Scene 1, setting, Produce Stand; Rose and Heather worry that George has been acting weird; by the end of the scene, they agree to talk to Burt about it. And that's really all the actors get. Every line of dialog you hear, is the cast just making it all up as they go along. Mike: Which makes it really weird sometimes. But also, really amazing. Kari: Definitely! We hope you'll agree that “Broken, Alaska” is a unique improvised podcast with a rich set of characters, and an endearing, and, sometimes sort of odd story. Try the first episode of Season 2*. It's called “The Munskie Library”. We think it introduces you to a lot of the characters in town, and it highlights the incredible improv skills of the actors on the show. Broken is a town full of heart, full of warmth and weirdness, and we hope you'll fall in love with “Broken, Alaska”. Mike: Thank you for listening. *Last minute change! The episode you'll hear is called “Doc Burgess”. It's the 2nd episode of Season 2, but it's still a great example of what we do in Broken. We started Season 2 on September 24, and the AVA Awards are for the period beginning October 1st, so we had to pick a different episode to submit for the Showcase. Enjoy! https://www.brokenalaskapodcast.com

Special Guest: Jordan Stevens (Perfecto / Las Vegas). Jordan Stevens has been DJing since 2003. Starting off in the West Coast USA rave scene he quickly became an underground favorite. In 2005 he decided it was time to make the jump to the club scene, landing his first residency at Las Vegas's #1 afterhours, late night Empire. From there he went on to open for the likes of Christopher Lawrence, Judge Jules, and Eddie Halliwell. He was a mainstay in the club until 2008 when Empire Ballroom closed its doors for the last time. Jordan's career soon kickstarted into full force starting with openings at Godskitchen in the trance show scene with ATB, 4 Strings, and Above and Beyond to name a few. Jordan soon captured the attention of Mike Fuller at the Palms and was brought into play all the major dance music events, including Paul Oakenfold's "Perfecto" and Goodlife Sundays at Moon. Voted "Best House/ Electronica DJ" by Las Vegas's City Life in 2010, at 26 years of age, the sky is the limit for this up and coming DJ.
