Please welcome to our show, Eden Alpert, partner at Vibrato Grill Jazz in Bel Air, which remains one of the most outstanding places in LA to hear LIVE music while enjoying amazing food and drink. But it's the story behind Vibrato that really steals the show, and it's all about Eden. Eden grew up in LA, the adopted daughter of jazz great Herb Alpert and his then wife, Sharon. She was adopted through Vista Del Mar, an all Jewish Family and Child non-profit service agency at the time. But as Eden tells it, her early years were far from perfect, describing her mother as a raging alcoholic and drug addict, while her dad was on the road. Which was a lot. Her parents divorced when she was three. But Eden decided she didn't want to be a victim to her past, she did A LOT of therapy to find peace and balance. She also went on a journey to find her birth mother, but that didn't quite work out as expected, and we'll talk about it. When her father opened Vibrato, Eden worked as a hostess, but after her dad saw how customers gravitated towards her, she not only managed the place, she eventually became partner. Let's just Eden is who people ask for when they walk through the door, she keeps it going as the vibrant, A-list venue that it's known for. Yet it's tucked away in a quiet neighborhood, so locals love it, too. Eden has one daughter, the light of her life, and when we spoke she was busy planning her wedding. And she was also on her way to a board meeting. She is big into philanthropy, and serves on four boards. Yet she still found time to call me for a preinterview, because that's how Eden rolls. Please find my full conversation with Eden on all video and audio platforms of #DeborahKobyltLIVE, and invite your friends, too. I'm your host, #DeborahZaraKobylt, and I thank you for joining us.

Why do we even bother listening to music? What's the kiki-bouba effect? What is our role as performers in the elegant cog of music making, and why is American vibrato so awful? Your old pal Inline G has it all covered in this week's episode. grma x Inline G Merch
Andy Vargas, acclaimed successor to the throne of Latino soul music in the U.S., has been making waves in the music industry for over two decades. As Santana's lead vocalist since 2000, he has collaborated with musical titans such as Juanes, Mana, Chris Perez, Frankie J, The Black Eyed Peas, Beyonce, and Enrique Iglesias. Given his first shot by legendary producer and managers Terry Melcher, Bruce Johnston of the Beach Boys, and Lou Adler, Andy inked a record deal at the age of 16 to Ron Fair at RCA, BMG. Here, he wrote and recorded Pop, Latin funk, and R&B Soul music. This caught the interest of Clive Davis and Carlos Santana, who asked him to support the worldwide smash “Supernatural” record. Vargas has crafted a unique music genre, earning him widespread recognition and acclaim. He has also expanded his professional reach by co-founding Malaspalabras Records (MPR) alongside acclaimed comedian George Lopez and music distribution giant, United Masters. MPR is committed to safeguarding artists' rights and launching fresh talents in both conventional distribution and the evolving Web3 arena. This year marks a significant milestone in Andy's journey as a musician. He has earned solo recognition, securing a coveted spot among the illustrious lineup of the Dave Koz Friends at Sea Cruise. For two weeks of musical bliss sailing through the Mediterranean, he'll share the stage with fellow superstar musicians, promising an unforgettable experience for all aboard.% But Andy's musical odyssey doesn't end there. He's set to join his mentor, the legendary Carlos Santana, and the Santana Band for the 2024 Oneness tour, featuring the iconic Counting Crows. This collaboration with musical giants is a testament to Andy's talent and unwavering dedication to his craft. Beyond his musical pursuits, Vargas is dedicated to giving back. In 2015, he founded The Andy Vargas Foundation (AVF), a non-profit organization with a mission to inspire, mentor, and educate underprivileged youth with dreams of making it in the music industry. AVF offers a host of free community programs, such as instrument training, vocal coaching, music composition and production workshops, music business courses, and college scholarships. Amidst these grand ventures, Andy remains deeply connected to his roots, finding solace and joy in performing on his favorite local So Cal stages, Spaghettini in Seal Beach and Herb Alpert's Vibrato, throughout the year. Here, amidst the cozy ambiance and intimate setting, he shares his gift with fans, creating moments of magic that linger long after the last note fades. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/matt-brown57/support

Our guest this week is none other than Team USA's Olympic medal-winning gymnast @asher_hong04! Now, amidst the Olympic glory, a video of Asher discussing his love of fragrance went viral on social media. In an interview during the games, Asher revealed he uses specific fragrances for competitions, AND revealed a super-sniffer ability to detect which scent the interviewer was wearing. Clearly… he's one of us! So, we were thrilled to welcome Asher to On the Scent…Asher has also posted videos on his Instagram, where a roommate challenged him to smell randomly picked fragrances from his collection, while blindfolded. Asher completely nailed the world's most difficult vault during the U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Trials, then went on and WON a bronze medal for Team USA during the Paris Olympics! From a Reuters news report on Asher:“Most gymnasts would prioritise packing items such as uniforms, tape and hand grips when preparing to compete on the world's biggest stage but inspirational fragrances were on top of American Asher Hong's mind heading to Paris. The 20-year-old has over 70 bottles of perfume in his collection and has brought seven with him to the Games, reflecting the recent social-media-driven rise in fragrance enthusiasm among young adults…”Asher's dedication to his sport *and* to somehow finding time for his love of fragrance is quite remarkable, and we can't wait to hear what fragrances he discovers next. Plus, who else thinks a fragrance brand needs to sponsor Asher?! The #12 2023 Cigar of the Year is the Aging Room Quattro Nicaragua Sonata Vibrato. While it's distributed by Altadis U.S.A., Aging Room is a brand owned by Altadis' Director of Product Capability, Rafael Nodal. Aging Room, and particularly the original Aging Room Quattro line, has seen tremendous success. In 2019, the Aging Room Quattro Nicaragua garnered critical acclaim, including a Top 20 Cigar on Cigar Coop and a Cigar of the Year from Cigar Aficionado. This past year, Nodal introduced a new line, an offshoot of the Quattro Nicaragua line known as the Aging Room Quattro Nicaragua Sonata. Like many Aging Room Cigars, the Aging Room Quattro Nicaragua Sonata is inspired by Nodal's love of music. A Sonata is a classic music composition for an instrumental soloist, often accompanied by piano. After the success of the original Aging Room Nicaragua Quattro, Nodal decided he wanted to compose his own interpretation of a sonata, but in the form of a cigar. In this episode, Dr. Hettie V. Williams is in discussion about Martin Luther King, Jr. with Dr. Maurice O. Wallace. Williams is Director of the Trotter Institute at UMass Boston and Wallace is Professor of English at Rutgers University-New Brunswick, author of Constructing the Black Masculine: Identity and Ideality in African American Men's Literature and Culture, 1775-1995, and coeditor of Pictures of Progress: Early Photography and the Making of African American Identity. Williams and Wallace discuss his latest book King's Vibrato: Modernism, Blackness, and the Sonic Life of Martin Luther King, Jr. (Duke University Press, 2022) in which he explores the history of sound in the Black experience through an analysis of King's vibrato. In this text, Wallace conjoins history and critical theory to discuss the “modernist soundscapes” that shaped King's voice and expression. He further argues that King's vibrato was produced out of a series of elements including ecclesiastical architecture, instrumentation (the organ), the audience, song, and technology. Virtuoso Fritz Kreisler was known and is remembered for his artistry as a violinist and composer -- and, also, as an unashamed showman. He was one of the most beloved and best known of the early recording-era artists, and a household name in his day. In fact, he was so adored by his audiences that when he revealed some of the pieces he'd performed and attributed to composers such as Vivaldi, Pugnani, and Couperin were, actually, his own compositions, the critics were irate, but his fans continued to pack concert halls.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
