South African opera star Pretty Yende is performing her biggest gig yet at the Coronation. She was personally selected by the King to sing at the service in Westminster Abbey. Growing up in the small rural town of Mpumalanga, Yende's passion for opera began when she saw a British Airways advertisement featuring the Flower Duet by Delibes. She asked her teacher about it, who advised her to join the school choir. Abandoning her initial plans to become an accountant, Pretty Yende went on to study at La Scala in Milan before making her Metropolitan Opera debut in New York in 2013, in the role of Adèle in Rossini's Le Comte Ory. A last-minute substitute, Yende had only weeks to prepare for the part. She tripped as she went out on stage, but picked herself up and carried on, going on to receive a standing ovation. Mark Coles talks to family and friends about one of the rising stars of opera. Credits: Title: I Feel Pretty (from the musical West Side Story) Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim Music by Leonard Bernstein. Synopsis A number of the quintessentially “French” operas are set in other lands. Bizet's “Carmen” is set in Spain and Gounod's ”Faust” is in Germany, to cite just two examples. But Spain and Germany were familiar next-door neighbors for 19th century Frenchmen, and in that colonizing age, Parisian audiences also enjoyed traveling to much more exotic corners, all the while safely ensconced in their plush balcony seats, of course. One of the grandest of French grand operas, Meyerbeer's “L'Africaine,” has as its eponymous heroine the African Queen of an imaginary East Indian isle, with none other than European Vasco da Gama as her love interest. Another famous French opera set in the mysterious East had its premiere performance on today's date in 1883, at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. This was “Lakmé” by Leo Delibes. In this one, the title heroine is an East Indian priestess of Brahma whose taboo love for an English Colonial officer leads to tragedy and death—but not before lots of gorgeous singing. The popular “Flower Duet” from “Lakmé” achieved a particularly late 20th-century brand of fame when it was used as the soundtrack to a British Airways TV commercial. Initially, the final two tracks had a lot of issues. 'Sunchyme' was overly compressed to the point that the bass would rumble and 'Flower Duet '99' was pitched way too high with a thin bassline. I have old plugins that require manual adjusting to get the sound you want as opposed to a one click solution. I spent so much time messing with the quality, that it didn't dawn on me until listening back in my car that FD was still pitched too high and that it would better serve the overall flow of the mix to switch the songs due to significant tempo changes. Everything is now fixed to my anal satisfaction. It's hard to appreciate my attention to detail until you hear the differences side by side but these were so noticeable — I felt compelled to go back and fix them for preservation. Party Favorz is dropping the fourth and final volume of the Ultimate Trance Classics series — a tribute set that's been in the works for over a year since the original release in 2010. Other than the fact that these sets are mixed much better than the original — they expand the original's reach delivering a memory trip for those club kids who were at all the raves dancing their assess off until the break of dawn. One caveat is the closing 'Sunchyme' by Dario G — a song that holds a very special place in many a heart. I opted not to go with the original (which worked) but found the official remixes that accompanied this release lacking. Club 69 (a.k.a. Peter Rauhofer) tried to remake the wheel for this song and it fell flat. The same can be said for Sasha who also contributed an official remix. The familiar choir hook lifted from the 'Life In a Northern Town' by Dream Academy (1986) set across an uplifting intrumental with piano wasn't something you wanted to stray too far from. Enter the Mastermix 'Diffusion Remix' from 2006. This version was included because not only did it stay true to the original, it's the only other remix this song should have received. By bumping up the BPM and adding a deep bassline to the original version, this remix (which borders on Eurodance) would have been the definitive dance floor version had it been released at the time, thus its inclusion. I don't think anyone will be disappointed because it just makes sense. I hope all our little Trance-loving kids enjoyed these sets as much as I've enjoyed bringing them back to life. I really was pleasantly surprised at how well this all came together after struggling to create the original series in 2010. I'll back next week just in time for everyone's Spring Break with some party music fair. Until then...ENJOY! As many of you may not know, Party Favorz hosting is up for renewal in a few days and it would be helpful if you could help pitch in to cover the costs. This is a once a year ask for donations but is not mandatory. I want to give a shout out to Gene R. ($10) for his generous donation. We're just under $100 shy of reaching our goal. Musicality is so much more than dynamics. It is truly our own self-expression, our individuality revealed through our music. In our role as interpreters of music written by others, we often limit ourselves to following the indications the composer has written on the page. But with so many more tools and options for bringing creativity to our music, why should we stop at dynamics? In this episode, I will reveal three ways in which you can make your music - any piece of music - more musically expressive. You will discover: Why you need to focus on “dimensions” instead of “dynamics.” How to practice playing more expressively whether you're an expert or a beginner. How adding more expression to your music may be the key to solving some of those trouble spots in a piece. Plus, I think you'll learn how to do the most creative and interesting practice you've ever done! In this much-anticipated episode, Scott, Karl, and Trent dig into what makes opera music so great, and why you should give it a chance if you haven't yet. Whether you’re completely new to opera or just need a refresher, you're bound to learn something new. Opera shares a root with the Latin word 'opus' meaning "to work, effort." Scott says, "It's so tortured and so far removed from reality and normal ways of being, all to prove a point about the culture." Karl adds, "It's something that you probably ought to know something about, just because it's such a peak of human artistic work." For many people, opera represents (whether this is understood positively or negatively) the very embodiment of “high culture.” But as Trent points out, "You're taking small, pedestrian moments and we're elevating their experience to the very height and grandiosity of the human experience." From gateway pieces to start out with as a new listener to the basic types of voices you encounter in an opera, the trio covers all the bases. Tune in for more music and ideas, brought to you by onlinegreatbooks.com. Pretty Yende is a young South African opera singer at the top of her game. Having enjoyed a meteoric rise performing in opera houses internationally, this autumn she took on the lead role of Violetta in Verdi's 'La Traviata' at Paris Opera. In this ‘In the Studio’, the cellist Abel Selaocoe talks to her about her preparations for the role, follows her as the challenging production takes shape, and meets her after her triumphant first performance to find out what it means to her. ‘Even if I want to admit it or not, being the first black person to sing this role at Paris Opera is a huge deal’ Yende tells Abel after opening night. For someone who became interested in opera aged 16 after hearing the Flower Duet on a TV advert, success has come swiftly. She made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 2013 when she was just 27, and released her first album in 2016. Abel talks to Yende about her background in a Zulu speaking home in Piet Retief in South Africa, and asks what it took for her to get where she is. She reveals the way she approaches her work, and reflecting on the opportunities she has had, says: “I represent every person that was never given the chance to be here. Every one of my brothers and sisters with tremendous talent that never got here. I get to be entrusted with the honour of saying ‘it’s possible’.

In Ep. 5, The Life of Fritz Kreisler, pt. I tells the story of Vienna's greatest violinist, Fritz Kreisler, from birth to his marriage in the beginning of the 20th century. His rise to fame was an eventful one and we will see him grow from a normal little boy into a first rate wunderkind. Following the glories of his youth, Kreisler will give up the violin to pursue the medical arts and also do a bit of soldering. But in the end, the call of music was too great and he set his sights once more on a career as a virtuoso violinist. ---------------- For all things GCP Please rate, review, and subscribe on iTunes! Lyric soprano Danielle de Niese was a star performer at Last Night of the Proms 2015. It was another milestone in this Australian-born American star's glittering career. Growing up, Danielle won various talent and television competitions and debuted at New York's prestigious Metropolitan Opera House when she was 19 years old. She says she knew she wanted to sing opera from the age of eight. Described as "opera's coolest soprano", Danielle is best known for her performances of Handel, Mozart, baroque music, as well as her reality TV shows, including The Diva Diaries. South African soprano Pretty Yende discovered opera by chance. She was 16 years old and watching a television advertisement for an airline, which featured The Flower Duet, from the opera Lakme by Léo Delibes. Pretty fell in love with the sound and instantly wanted to imitate it. She went to be classically trained at Cape Town University and then got a place at the Accademia Teatro alla Scala, in Milan. In 2011 Pretty won first prize in Placido Domingo's Operalia competition and two years later she shot to fame when, at short notice, she had to stand in to perform Countess Adele in Rossini's opera, Le Comte Ory. This was Pretty's Metropolitan Opera House debut. (Picture: Opera singers Danielle de Niese (left) and Pretty Yende. Credits: Chris Dunlop/Kim Fox)
