Our teacher today is John Crowley. It is difficult to appropriately describe John and the Crowley family's story without drawing comparisons to superheroes. Harrison Ford gave it a shot, and the result is Extraordinary Measures, a blockbuster movie he starred in, alongside Brendan Fraser and Kerry Russell. The movie is based on Gita Anand's book The Cure, which tells the story of John and his wife's journey to save two of their children from a then-untreatable disease called Pompe. Thanks to John, that's no longer the case, and now more than 20 years later, both of his children and many others with Pompe are not only still living, but thriving. Since that time, John's gone on to build several successful biotech companies, including Amicus Therapeutics and Novozyme. And just a few days before the release of this class, it was announced that John is now the new CEO of Biotechnology Innovation Organization, or BIO, which is the leading biotech advocacy, education, and policy organization in the world. There's nobody more purpose-built to give us a history lesson on the biotech industry. Please enjoy this class with the incredible John Crowley. Bringing Friends to Christ Mark 2:1-12 Mark 2:1 And when he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. 2 And many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to them. 3 And they came, bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men. 4 And when they could not get near him because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him, and when they had made an opening, they let down the bed on which the paralytic lay. 5 And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” 6 Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, 7 “Why does this man speak like that? He is blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” 8 And immediately Jesus, perceiving in his spirit that they thus questioned within themselves, said to them, “Why do you question these things in your hearts? 9 Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, ‘Rise, take up your bed and walk'? 10 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the paralytic— 11 “I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home.” 12 And he rose and immediately picked up his bed and went out before them all, so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, “We never saw anything like this!” Bringing Friends to Jesus is the greatest Act of Love for a believer! When people were dying from AIDS in the 1980s and 90s, Congress found a way to expedite the drug approval process and saved countless lives. Established in 1992, the Accelerated Approval Program allows the FDA to speed approval of drugs for patients with serious and life-threatening conditions. In this episode we talk with the father of children with a rare disease, a company CEO working to treat rare diseases and two policy experts on Accelerated Approval.
Based on a true(ish) story where Brendan Fraser plays a father who struggles and perseveres to find a cure for his two kids who have a rare condition known as Pompe Disease. Joined by grumpy doctor researcher Harrison Ford, the two race against the clock to save the kids' lives with the aid of... you guessed it... Big Pharma.
Since the U.S. brushed up against its debt limit in January, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has been stretching the government's money as far as possible using “extraordinary measures” to buy time for Congress. One listener thought to ask: How, exactly, does that work? And how long could they last? We'll get into it and answer more of your questions about where the funds for military assistance to Ukraine come from and why the Federal Reserve's strategy to bring down inflation may come with unwanted side effects. Byrne A graduate of Boston College with a double major in finance and theatre and an M.F.A. in Acting from the prestigious Theatre School at DePaul University, actor P.J. Byrne stars alongside Dwayne Johnson to save the world from global catastrophe in the action film Rampage loosely based on the video game of the same name. He can also be seen in 15:17 Train to Paris which marks the second time Byrne has worked with Oscar Award winning director Clint Eastwood. Byrne's latest movie is Green Book for director and writer Peter Farrelly. Green Book tells the story of a working-class Italian-American bouncer who becomes the driver for an African-American classical pianist on a tour of venues through the 1960s American South and stars Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali. "With the debt ceiling fight, U.S. Treasuries' extraordinary measures have been enacted ten times since 2010. Investors can expect weeks of wrangling ahead which will be a distraction and stoke uncertainty. I don't expect the market impact to be long lasting. Indicators such as inflation and employment are moving in the right direction and point to a soft landing and Fed deceleration," says Aoifinn Devitt.
Sarah, Jonah and David wonder what's left of fiscal responsibility in the Republican Party as the debt-ceiling deadline hits Congress. Who's serious about digging in and balancing the budget? Will taking on the "weaponized" beauracy make a dent? And, haven't we been in this before? The crew also tallies which countries are providing tactical support to Ukraine (and how much). Our country has never defaulted on its debt. The government has no intention of breaking that record. It was on a Friday the 13th in late winter 1997 when John Crowley's life changed forever. John and his wife Aileen had been noticing concerning symptoms in their infant daughter Megan for several months, and after a few rounds of testing she was diagnosed with a rare form of muscular dystrophy known as Pompe disease. Doctors told the Crowleys their daughter likely only had a few years to live, an outlook that ultimately sparked John's remarkable efforts to find treatments for Megan as well as her younger brother Patrick, who was also struck with Pompe. His family's amazing journey was the inspiration for the movie Extraordinary Measures starring Brendan Fraser and Harrison Ford. Join host Shiv Gaglani in this captivating and inspiring conversation with Crowley, now the Executive Chairman at Amicus Therapeutics, to learn about how he and his team are shedding light on some of the rarest diseases in the world, the promise of new technology in genetics, and the need for an Operation Warp Speed to develop rare disease treatments. As Crowley puts it, “We can beat nature, we think, in the years and decades ahead. We just oftentimes have to beat time.”Mentioned in this episode: https://amicusrx.com/

Always two, there are: a Child of Darkness, and a Child of Light. Or something. Things get kind of convoluted in this 1991 made-for-USA-television thriller starring Sela Ward and a very young Josh Lucas. And for a literal "blink and you'll miss it" moment, we bring you the very first appearance of Brenden Fraser on film - years before returning to Portland for "Extraordinary Measures." For literally a second-and-a-half in the background. We've all got to start somewhere.

When Gideon Gono became the Governor of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe in late 2003, his country was already suffering from terrible hyperinflation. Throughout the 1990s, inflation in Zimbabwe averaged well over 20%. And just a few years later inflation had reached 200%. That's when Zimbabwe's government hired Gideon Gono to fix the inflation problem. Gono had a reputation as a sharp, competent banker. He had previously been the managing director of Zimbabwe's largest bank-- Bank of Credit and Commerce-- so the government thought that Gono had the skills to turn Zimbabwe's economy around. Despite his keen understanding of money and finance, however, Gono's policies plunged Zimbabwe even further into hyperinflation. Inflation was running at 600% per year when Gono took over the central bank. And at first, inflation fell to ‘only' 133%. But by 2007, four years into his term, inflation in Zimbabwe reached more than 60,000%. And by the end of 2008, nearly 80 BILLION percent. Such figures are incomprehensible. I've been to Zimbabwe several times and have heard a number of first-hand accounts from residents who lived through this period. There were food shortages, fuel shortages, electricity shortages, and more. Unemployment skyrocketed. Crime rates soared. It was complete and total despair. What could have possibly caused such chaos? Simple. Gono printed absurd quantities of money. And that tidal wave of money flooding into Zimbabwe's economy caused prices to spiral out of control. By 2006 they had to issue a new currency, essentially chopping a few zeros off of the old currency. Then they started printing million, billion, and trillion dollar bank notes, with which you could barely buy a loaf of bread. In his later memoirs, Gono acknowledged the inflationary risks of his actions. He knew that prices would rise. But as he explains, the situation was so bad that the only sensible course of action was to keep printing more money! Gono's book, Extraordinary Measures for Extraordinary Challenges, reads something like Julius Caesar's Commentaries on the Gallic War… or Andrew Cuomo's ridiculous book on leadership during Covid. They're all fairly pompous and self-aggrandizing; Gono even defends his actions, saying “To ensure that my people survive, I had to print money. I found myself doing extraordinary things that aren't in textbooks.” He's a true hero. It's ironic, however, that Gono is considered almost a joke among central bankers for failing to control hyperinflation, and he's soundly criticized for having printing so much money. Yet in an interview with Newsweek, it was Gono wagging his fingers at Western central bankers, saying, “The whole world is now practicing what they have been saying I should not. . .” In other words, most central banks in the world have resorted to printing unimaginable quantities of money, just like Gono did. What's interesting is that Gono made those comments back in 2009-- during the first Global Financial Crisis. Central banks responded to the big crash back then by printing money and expanding their balance sheets; the Federal Reserve, for example, created so much money after the financial crisis that its own balance sheet increased from $850 billion (in 2008) to more than $4 trillion by early 2020. And then Covid happened. In the last 18 months or so, the Fed has printed so much money that its balance sheet now stands at more than $8.3 trillion. That's nearly TEN TIMES the size from 2008, before the last financial crisis. By comparison, the US economy has grown 23% in ‘real', i.e. inflation-adjusted terms since 2008. So, the last 13 years has seen 23% real economic growth… and 946% growth in money supply. Last year in particular, M2 money supply grew at a higher rate than any other year in US history aside from 1944. And in completely unrelated news, US inflation over the past several months is near its highest level in more t...

Today on The Neil Haley Show, Neil Haley will interview PJ Byrne of The World Without You. P.J. Byrne A graduate of Boston College with a double major in finance and theatre and an M.F.A. in Acting from the prestigious Theatre School at DePaul University, actor P.J. Byrne has compiled a long list of impressive film and television credits. Byrne stars alongside Dwayne Johnson to save the world from global catastrophe in the action film Rampage loosely based on the video game of the same name. He can also be seen in 15:17 Train to Paris which marks the second time Byrne has worked with Oscar Award-winning director Clint Eastwood. In 2014, Byrne starred alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in The Wolf of Wall Street for director Martin Scorsese and proceed to team up again with the famed director in 2016 on Vinyl for HBO. He also can be seen on Big Little Lies with Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon, another HBO production and on the Showtime series I'm Dying Up Here staring Melissa Leo. Incredibly well versed in drama, comedy and science fiction/fantasy work, Byrne is one of the stars of the upcoming SyFy Channel series Temors, which also stars Kevin Bacon. Tremors is a television reboot of the film of the same name in which a small town is gripped with fear over giant underground worms living beneath them. Renowned for his pivotal scene-stealing role in Horrible Bosses, Byrne's character supports the stars of the film as they plot to kill their bosses. This film allows him to add Jason Bateman to a long list of important actors with whom he has had the opportunity to work. He has played opposite: Steve Carell in Dinner for Schmucks, Zach Galifianakis in The Campaign, Harrison Ford in Extraordinary Measures, Tom Hanks in Mike Nichols' Charlie Wilson's War, Will Ferrell and Nicole Kidman in Nora Ephron's Bewitched, Jack Black in Michel Gondry's Be Kind, Rewind, Jim Carrey in Bruce Almighty and Clint Eastwood in Bloodwork. Byrne was very well received for his starring role in the 5th installment of the phenomenally successful Final Destination franchise for Warner Bros. In the film Byrne's character meets one of the more unusual demises ever in the series of sci-fi horror films. Byrne's television credits include the fan favorite role of Irv Smiff, the driven sports agent, who represents a number of professional football players in the ongoing BET hit series The Game. Byrne is also adding writer to his resume having recently sold Brothers of the Bride to Newline, a feature film that he will co-write and star in which is being produced by Ben Stiller's Red Hour Productions. In addition to his on-screen roles, Byrne also voices "Bolin" in the Emmy- nominated Nickelodeon series, The Legend of Korra now entering its third season, and received a Behind The Voice Award for his portrayal of that character. When the Lord Jesus provided for every need of body and life, he didn’t lower his blessings through shining clouds on a glowing beam. There were no divine fireworks. He did the extraordinary while using ordinary matter. Starting with a boy’s lunch and enlisting his disciples as his distributors, Jesus showed God’s compassion as well as God’s ability to provide for all people in simple yet meaningful ways. Today we see him work through simple means — water, bread, wine, and his word — to provide us with eternal blessings of forgiveness, peace, and lasting joy.

Aim- To Understand that Faithfulness occasionally Calls the Church to some Extraordinary Measures
Elamin gets the most important question out of the way first: how are you? As the entire country faces an unprecedented public health emergency, it’s easy to get lost among the nonstop COVID-19 updates — and Rosie and Elamin get it. It’s a lot. It’s unusual to see the prime minister announcing major updates every day, let alone in front of his house while he continues to self-isolate. But are Canadians hearing what they need to hear from the government right now? And with Parliament suspended, is it harder for journalists and opposition parties to scrutinize the government’s latest crisis measures?

There was a medical emergency on an airplane and a surgeon took measures to save this person't life... be warned.
I've been fascinated by what it takes for us to finally give up on our plan for life and pick up God's plan. Great examples are of entertainers that live such savage lives while they're young, yet turn to God and the church during the later moments in their lives. The moments when the popular culture has deamed them too old, irrelevent, and no longer trending. Everyday people do the same. When we're young, dumb, and full of selfish outcomes, we just wanna do us (and as many others and possible). But, when and accident happens, bad medical report pops up, or life appears to be ending, God is the answer for us. Why does it take all that to follow Christ? Should it? What about in your life? What or who are you following, liking, and giving influence? There's a point in your life that you have to understand who and why you're following, liking, and/or serving.
The stock market has had a miraculous start to the year... but why? In this video Tim goes over a power point that points to several pieces of data that refutes the current narrative that is out there. The boil down is that now bad news... is good news. Two years ago it was good news is bad news. Listen to see what has changed and you decide for yourself. This is news you aren't getting anywhere else. "Extraordinary Measures," the 2010 Portland-filmed movie starring Harrison Ford, Brendan Fraser, and Keri Russell, works on several levels: a dull one, a tedious one, and a crotchety one. "Inspired by true events," this movie is like overhearing someone mumbling a conversation about the exiting world of bringing a new drug to market. That being said, talking about the movie is infinitely more funny and interesting than actually watching it, so join us as we discuss just what "Extraordinary Measures" measures up to. Be sure to visit www.PortlandAtTheMovies.com for the visuals of how Portland looks in the movie.
John F. Crowley is the Chairman and CEO of Amicus Therapeutics, a publicly traded biotechnology company, which he helped to found in 2005 and is now a 300+ person company in 22 countries. John's involvement with biotechnology stems from the 1998 diagnosis of two of his children with Pompe disease -- a severe and often fatal neuromuscular disorder. In his drive to find a cure for them, he left his job and became an entrepreneur as the Co-founder, President, and CEO of Novazyme Pharmaceuticals in 2000, a biotech start-up conducting research on a new experimental treatment for Pompe disease (which he credits as ultimately saving his children's lives). In 2001, Novazyme was acquired by Genzyme Corporation for nearly $200 million. John and his family have been profiled on the front page of The Wall Street Journal and are the subjects of a book by Pulitzer prize-winning journalist Geeta Anand, The Cure: How a Father Raised $100 Million -- and Bucked the Medical Establishment -- in a Quest to Save His Children. The major motion picture Extraordinary Measures, starring Brendan Fraser and Harrison Ford, is inspired by the Crowley family journey. John is the author of a personal memoir: Chasing Miracles: The Crowley Family Journey of Strength, Hope, and Joy. John also served as a commissioned intelligence officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve from 2005-2016. He was assigned to the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) and is a veteran of the global war on terrorism, with service in Afghanistan. He graduated with a B.S. in Foreign Service from Georgetown University, and earned a J.D. from the University of Notre Dame Law School and an M.B.A. from Harvard. He previously served (2014-2016) as the National Chairman of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America and is a founding board member of the Global Genes Project. John is a Henry Crown Fellow at The Aspen Institute. This is an incredibly powerful episode. Enjoy! Show notes and links for this episode can be found at www.fourhourworkweek.com/podcast. This podcast is brought to you by iD Commerce + Logistics. I'm asked all the time about how to scale businesses quickly. Rule number one: remove unnecessary bottlenecks. Many businesses can do so by outsourcing inventory management and fulfillment to a company that makes this its primary focus. iD Commerce + Logistics is just such a company. It helps online retailers and entrepreneurs outgrow their competition by handling all types of details -- from inventory to packing and shipping. I depended on iD to handle these types of details when I launched The 4-Hour Chef so I could focus on promoting the book. As a listener of this podcast, you can get up to $10,000 off your start-up fees and costs waived by visiting tim.blog/scale or idcomlog.com/tim. This podcast is also brought to you by Wealthfront. Wealthfront is a massively disruptive (in a good way) set-it-and-forget-it investing service, led by technologists from places like Apple and world-famous investors. It has exploded in popularity in the last two years and now has more than $2.5B under management. In fact, some of my good investor friends in Silicon Valley have millions of their own money in Wealthfront. Why? Because you can get services previously limited to the ultra-wealthy and only pay pennies on the dollar for them, and it's all through smarter software instead of retail locations and bloated sales teams. Check out wealthfront.com/tim, take their risk assessment quiz, which only takes 2-5 minutes, and they'll show you -- for free -- exactly the portfolio they'd put you in. If you want to just take their advice and do it yourself, you can. Or, as I would, you can set it and forget it. Well worth a few minutes: wealthfront.com/tim.***If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes? Extraordinary measures by Chief Rabbi Dr Warren Goldstein
When we say we cover all movies Harrison Ford has been in, we meant it. Nothing proves that more than this episode. Can we make these two movies interesting enough to podcast about? Only one way to find out. One of these movies, Crossing Over and Extraordinary Measures, just might surprise you and contains one of Harrison's most underrated characters. We get into some current Harrison Ford news (there's plenty of Force Awakens stuff going on) and learn about some fan fiction that could end up being Indiana Jones 5. ——————————————- -Website: GetOffMyPodcast.com-Music by Night Stop, song called “Harrison Ford”. -Show is hosted by Mike and Trent. You can thank Chris for that title, so I hold no responsibility for the title at all. In reference to the title we have a pretty big piece of news that will probably enrage most people. But before all of that we cover the rest of the news. Allison goes on a huge rant, that Chris and I eventually join in on. No Trailer Spot this week. Chris does the Box Office Report, and for reviews this week we cover Extraordinary Measures and Legion. Enjoy the show! Opening and Closing Song: Taking Back Control by Sparta

Extraordinary Measures requires extraordinary tolerance for bathos, bombast and plain old unpleasantness. It's a fictionalized – and sadly trivialized – adaptation of a non-fiction book, The Cure, which was written by my Wall Street Journal colleague Geeta Anand... Creation is a fancier botch, blissed out on its own cleverness. Paul Bettany is Charles Darwin, struggling to finish The Origin of the Species while he grieves the loss of his beloved daughter Annie, who died at the age of ten.

Things (almost) get nasty in the New Movies Podcast this week. Grand Rapids Press film critic John Serba and producer pal Cory Olsen watched "Extraordinary Measures" -- the new drama starring Brendan Fraser and Harrison Ford -- and walked out with clashing opinions of the talent on hand. They also mull over kid flick "Tooth Fairy," Pedro Almodovar-Penelope Cruz collaboration "Broken Embraces," top-shelf sports drama "The Damned United" starring Michael Sheen and new faith-based indie drama "To Save a Life." Oh, and Serba makes a must-see recommendation among new DVD releases. Give it a listen:
