Valentino Zucchetti When Valentino Zucchetti won the gold medal at the Genée International Ballet Competition in 2006, Dance Gazette called him ‘dazzling' and ‘above all, devastatingly charismatic.' The Italian artist has brought those qualities as dancer with the Royal Ballet in London (especially in vivid roles like Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet, Lescaut in Manon and Lensky in Onegin), and an award-winning choreographer. Works like Scherzo, Anemoi and Jeunesse (created for the RAD's Fonteyn competition in 2023) radiate a lyrical eye and a heartfelt response to music. As he prepares a premiere for the London Handel Festival, he discusses the rewards and challenges of his dual career. Valentino Zucchetti trained at La Scala and the Royal Ballet School and won the RAD's 2006 Genée International Ballet Competition (now The Fonteyn) and the 2007 Solo Seal award. He danced with Zürich Ballet and Norwegian National Ballet before joining the Royal Ballet in 2010, promoted to First Soloist in 2014. He won the RBS's Ursula Moreton Choreographic Award in 2005, and has created ballets for New English Ballet Theatre (Orbital Motion, Enticement's Lure, Firth of Fifth, Into the Light) and the Royal Ballet, including Scherzo (South Bank Sky Arts Award for Dance) and Anemoi (Critic's Circle National Dance Award). He created Jeunesse for The Fonteyn 2023. LINKShttps://www.london-handel-festival.com/show/2025-double-bill-tales-of-apollo-hercules/ Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Which gig pigs gig has your disbelief been most suspended at? What's Alex's dad doing for his 90th? And who is Ted Sneezington? This and other big questions resolved in an epic poem of a Gig Pigs episode which is set in the Royal Opera House, but still manages to spend much of it debating Strokes albums. We're so fun! Working with narcissistic leaders in dance and experiencing dehumanization as a dancer are sad realities that many dancers face, especially in the professional ballet world. In today's episode, we are talking about how dancers can reclaim a sense of agency over themselves and their journeys even in the midst of this broken system. Melody Mennite Principal ballerina formerly with Houston Ballet and currently dancing with Vitacca Ballet. She has toured internationally to perform the classics as well as contemporary work in dance. Some of her classical Principal roles include Odette/Odile, Aurora, Kitri, Sugar Plum Fairy and Clara in The Nutcracker, Cinderella, Manon, Juliet, The Sylph in Bournanville's La Sylphide, Nikya in La Bayadere, Ciao Ciao San in Madame Butterfly, Marie in the ballet Marie, Tatiana and Olga in Onegin, Stephanie and Mary Vetsera in Meyerling, Swanhilda in Coppelia, Valencienne in The Merry Widow, and Lise in La Fille mal Gardee. Melody's most recent international appearance was in the role of Juliet for the Houston Ballet's Romeo and Juliet tour to Melbourne, Australia. During Melody's professional career she has also originated roles in new classical and contemporary productions by choreographers Christopher Wheeldon, Justin Peck, Stanton Welch, Ben Stevenson, Christopher Bruce, Jorma Elo, Cathy Marston, Paul Taylor, Aszure Barton, Nicole Fonte, Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, Olivier Wevers, Oliver Halkowich, Jane Weiner, and Garret Smith as well as in her dual role as dancer/choreographer for several films. Melody enjoys all forms of dance and has extensive training and experience with styles rooted in classical ballet, contemporary, jazz, and hip hop. She is passionate about both learning and teaching what she has learned with others. Ms. Mennite has graced the cover of both Dance Magazine and Dance Europe and is celebrated as the Audrey Hepburn of ballet due to her dynamic acting and a predisposition for comedic roles. As an actor Melody has achieved two award winning performances in film and continues to build this part of her resume.

In today's episode, a conversation with David McAllister, author of Ballet Confidential. Ballet Confidential takes us backstage, in a manner of speaking, and serves as a wonderfully elucidatory introduction to the world of ballet. McAllister's enthusiasm paired with experience, mastery even, means that Ballet Confidential has something for everyone, from longtime fans of ballet to those who it might have never occurred to step a foot inside the theatre. Mcallister is the former artistic director and principal dancer of The Australian Ballet, which he joined in 1983. Among many major works, he performed principal roles with the company in The Sleeping Beauty, Romeo and Juliet, Don Quixote, Coppelia, Onegin, and Manon.

Would you have the honour to behave like a coward?'Eugene Onegin' by Alexander Pushkin is a novel in verse of an unhappy Russian dandy. Onegin lacks meaning from a city life and struggles to find it in the countryside, with the same superficial gossip, flirtatious women and rash young men. The poetry is renowned for it's unique rhyme scheme known as the 'Pushkin Sonnet' or 'Onegin Stanza'.I summarised the book as follows. "It's easily my most favourite poetry that I've read. Not only does the style roll of the tongue but the characters, scenery, plot and narration all kept me highly engaged. My one gripe is that I don't know Russian so couldn't read this in the Russian original, although the English translation is still outstanding!"I hope you have a fantastic day wherever you are in the world. Hør dramaturg Hedda Høgåsen-Hallesby fortelle om Tsjajkovskijs opera Eugen Onegin, og om denne oppsetningen, i regi av Christof Loy.
Today, we have an interview with Boris Dralyuk. Dralyuk is a literary translator, poet, and the Editor-in-Chief of the Los Angeles Review of Books. He holds a PhD in Slavic Languages and Literatures from UCLA, where he taught Russian literature for a number of years. He has also taught at the University of St Andrews, Scotland. His work has appeared in the Times Literary Supplement, The New York Review of Books, The New Yorker, London Review of Books, The Guardian, Granta, and other journals. He is the author of many books and is a wonderful translator and has won many prizes for his work. His new book is called My Hollywood and Other Poems, which was published early this year. It is a collection of lyric meditations on the experience of émigrés in Los Angeles. In forms ranging from ballades to villanelles to Onegin sonnets, the poems pursue the sublime in a tarnished landscape, seek continuity and mourn its loss in a town where change is the only constant. My Hollywood draws on the poet’s own life as a Jewish immigrant from the Soviet Union, honors the vanishing traces of the city’s past, and, in crisp and evocative translations, summons the voices of five Russian poets who spent their final years in LA, including the composer Vernon Duke. Our conversation here is focused around Russian history in Los Angeles, Russian immigration, the war in Ukraine, his time as an editor of the LA Review of books and more. Please enjoy our wonderful conversation and buy his equally wonderful new book.

On the first episode of the second season of 'A Body's Language' we speak to David McAllister. This episode was recorded late last year, in Davids final week as director of The Australian Ballet Company.David shares stories about his dancing days with The Australian Ballet, working with the likes of Nureyev and Glen Tetley, speaks about pieces of music still make him feel sick with nerves and provides great insights into his philosophies on directorship- reflecting on how The Australian Ballet chose to prioritize the mental health of their dancers during the pandemic while maintaining their world leading physical healthcare program.A graduate of The Australian Ballet School, Perth-born David McAllister began his training with Evelyn Hodgkinson and joined The Australian Ballet in 1983. He was promoted to senior artist in 1986 and to principal artist in January 1989.During his time with the company, he danced many principal roles, including those in The Sleeping Beauty, Don Quixote, Coppélia, Manon, La Sylphide, John Cranko's Onegin and Romeo and Juliet, and Jiří Kylián's Stepping Stones; in 1985 he won Bronze at the Fifth International Ballet Competition in Moscow.Throughout his career, David made numerous guest appearances worldwide, dancing with Bolshoi Ballet, the Kirov Ballet, the Georgian State Ballet, The National Ballet of Canada, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Singapore Dance Theatre and, in 1992, as part of a Royal Gala performance in London in the presence of the Princess of Wales. In 2000, he completed a Graduate Diploma in Arts and Entertainment Management and in 2001, took his final bow as a dancer after a performance of Albrecht in Giselle at the Sydney Opera House, partnering Miranda Coney. In July of that year, David became artistic director of The Australian Ballet. He was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia in the 2004 Australia Day Honours List.Over the next two decades, on his way to becoming The Australian Ballet's longest-serving artistic director, David invigorated the company's repertoire with a series of new commissions from the world's foremost choreographers, including Alexei Ratmansky, Graeme Murphy and Wayne McGregor. He appointed two new resident choreographers, Tim Harbour and Alice Topp, and, through co-productions with leading international companies, secured major works such as Christopher Wheeldon's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland© and Yuri Possokhov's Anna Karenina. As a director/choreographer, he gifted the company with a lavish and widely acclaimed new production of The Sleeping Beauty, funded largely through donations from philanthropic supporters, and three works in the Storytime Ballet series, made especially for young children.Since stepping down as director in January of 2021, David has created a new 'Swan Lake' for Finnish National Ballet, is currently staging Lucas Jervies 'Spartacus', created for The Australian Ballet in 2018 and is in high demand as a guest teacher and choreographer in Australia and abroad.

PODCAST #25 SUPPLEMENT POEMS FOR “ONEGIN” In Podcast #24 I recited the first few dialogic exchanges of sonnets between Pushkin's verse novel “Eugene Onegin,” and me, the translator and collocutor. Here I'd like to supplement our book-long con-verse-ation or interview with additional lyrics, mainly by Pushkin, which I added to clarify crucial moments in the Russian poet's text. I'll begin my sampling with an introductory lyric, “Collocutor's Preface” (26-27) that will convey my mood when beginning the innovative interview project, modeled upon my earlier exchange of sonnets with those of Shakespeare in my book “Shakespair” and with Rilke in "Rilke's Art of Metric Melody." Then I'll read Pushkin's poem of delight called “Winter Morning” (388), where the mood matches my own in the “Preface” poem. “I built myself a monument” (140), based on an ode by Horace, shows Pushkin's satisfaction with his career as inclusive poet welcoming many traditions. “Earliest memories…” (335) shows the poet in a more troubled self-presentation, written in the Dantescan terza rima to convey a solemn tone. Then we'll highlight Pushkin's talent as ballad writer in “Once there lived a simple knight” (327). The astonishing poem “Feast in Time of Plague” (322), from a minidrama of that name, shows a Shakespearean dramatic power. I'll offer a couple of strophes in Russian to show the force of the original. Lastly, I'll sample a couple of poems on mermaids, one by Pushkin's disciple Mikhail Lermontov, and one by the later Symbolist poet Konstantin Balmont, to which I'll offer a final brief reply (108-109).
Synopsis for Podcast 22 Pushkin's Onegin with Replies Alexander Pushkin (1799-1837) is Russia's most beloved poet. Eugene Onegin, called by Pushkin a “novel in verse,” is Russia's favorite narrative poem and her most influential novel. The narrative – about what was widely called a “superfluous man” – sets a context for the works by Turgenev, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, and Chekhov that were to follow. From Lord Byron, Pushkin borrowed a clever device: the use of a casual narrator who becomes a fascinating character in the story. Tchaikovsky made Onegin into a great tragic opera, but he had to leave out the entertaining character of the narrator – plus all the delightful mood changes in the storyteller's personality. Form-faithful translator Martin Bidney has created a new genre of literature, the verse interview book. For every 14-line poem of Pushkin's, Bidney writes a Pushkin-style “reply” poem! So the book becomes a total dialogue, really two verse novels in conversation. Utterly unprecedented. The translator as collocutor.

Exploring the drama filled "Eugene Onegin" by Tchaikovsky, this episode we dive into the topics of love, boredom, and the fragile ego of a title character who causes chaos in the lives of others. Premiered in 1879, this opera remains strikingly relevant in today’s social media driven world, where a social circuit of expectation and gossip has been replaced by the need to present our “best selves” online. On korona tuonut Marjukka Tepposen kulttuurielämään iloisiakin tuotoksia. Tammikuussa perustettiin Karttulan musiikinystävät ry, jonka puheenjohtajana hän toimii. Mika Aro haastattelee Marjukka Tepposta.

Russian Diction is our topic this week--baritone Dmitri Vargin helps us work through the text to Onegin's aria "Вы мне писали... Когда бы жизнь домашним кругом". Our focus this time is on unstressed Os in every position. Finally there's a working link to this libretto that doesn't need to be downloaded! So here is the libretto for Евгений Онегин, scroll down to "page" 37 to find the recitative and aria for today. If you have the book Russian Songs and Arias, be aware of two typos in their transcription of this aria: In the first line, кругом has the wrong stressed syllable so the O is unstressed On the second page of it, the seventh line, годам also has the wrong stressed syllable so in this case the O is stressed.
