Paul Herriott caught up with Danielle de Niese before rehearsals to chat about her work and time spent in Ireland this year.
Introduction: Minutes 0 to 5:00 We will have an episode out next week and will be off on February 11. I've been watching The Last of Us. Chandra is watching the Australian Open. Royals: Minutes 5:00 to 19:30 Reactions to Spare are focused on Meghan and wondering where she is instead of addressing Harry's explosive claims, particularly about the press. We would love to read Meghan's memoir and hear her take on some of these stories. The royals are sending other people to do their dirty work. A woman named Marjorie Wallace, who founded a mental health charity and worked as an investigative journalist, claimed Meghan is “playing the victim card” by discussing her suicide ideation on the Harry and Meghan docuseries. Wallace is friends with Charles and Camilla. A mixed race Opera singer named Danielle de Niese claimed Meghan was calling the entire country of Britain racist, which de Niese said “hasn't been my experience.” Danielle de Niese is married to a white aristocrat and they live on a huge estate that's been in his family for generations. That column was by Richard Eden and Chandra wonders if he was putting words in de Neise's mouth. The Guardian sent a journalist to Montecito, where it sounded like Harry and Meghan have a quiet life of doing normal things like shopping and going to shows. A local bookstore had sold 30 copies of Spare, and this was somehow news despite the evacuation in Montecito. It was hard for me to listen to Harry talk about how much he drank and did drugs. The media keeps asking where Meghan is but they berated her and nitpicked everything she said when Archetypes was airing. Princess Kate has assembled a team of advisors to her Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood. She's going to meet with them a whole two times a year. They released a one and a half minute video from that and I could barely hear what she was saying. Chandra thinks she has improved since the time she introduced Jill Biden. Kate and William also graced a Windsor food bank with their presence since they couldn't be bothered to announce a donation or bring anything with them. William brought the Earthshot finalists to Windsor after failing to invite them to the awards ceremony in Boston. Virginia Giuffre's one year gag order in her settlement from Prince Andrew is about to run out. She's the woman raped by Andrew when she was trafficked to him at 17 by Jeffrey Epstein. She has reportedly signed a memoir deal worth millions. There are stories that Andrew inherited millions from his mother's estate and has a “war chest” he's going to use to fight Giuffre in court. Andrew reportedly wants to use his HRH title privately in business dealings. Oscar nominations: Minutes 19:30 to 24:00 We got the Oscar nominations and there are some surprises. Both Viola Davis and Danielle Deadwyler got snubbed in the Best Actress category while Ana de Armas got nominated for Blonde and Andrea Riseborough got a nomination for To Leslie. It's another case of Oscars so white. There are also no women nominated in the Best Director category. We hope Brendan Fraser wins Best Actor over Austin Butler. Chandra loves Tar but I don't have a movie I want to win Best Picture yet. Comments of the Week: Minutes 24:00 to end My comments of the week are the responses to Lolo86lf on the post about Sean Penn and Robin Wright reuniting. Chandra's comment of the week is from Nixie on the post about Gerard Pique going Instagram official with his new piece. Thanks for listening bitches!

Rachael Watts has spent her life hiding a secret. Now 40, she was seven years old when Russell Bishop - known as the Babes in the Wood murderer - abducted, attacked and sexually assaulted her in 1990. It is a crime that should never have happened, as back in 1987, Russell Bishop had been charged with the murders of two nine-year-olds, Nicola Fellows and Karen Hadaway. But police were unable to secure a conviction when a series of prosecution blunders meant evidence and testimonies failed to stand up in court. Bishop was able to walk free and three years later he abducted and attacked Rachael, leaving her for dead. Miraculously she survived and it was her testimony which finally meant Bishop was convicted and put behind bars, despite him protesting his innocence. However, in 2018, forensic scientists presented new DNA evidence and Bishop received two life sentences for the murders of Nicola Fellows and Karen Hadaway. Ever since her attack, Rachael's family have fought to protect her privacy, hoping she could lead as normal life as possible. Rachael has never done a broadcast interview about what happened to her. But since Russell Bishop's death in January this year, she decided she wanted to tell her story. Danielle de Niese has been hailed as 'opera's coolest soprano' by New York Times Magazine. She has starred in the West End musical 'Man Of La Mancha' alongside Kelsey Grammar, hosted at the BBC Proms, performed on stage with LL Cool J, and sung in a Ridley Scott movie. She is now taking over the theatres in London in the build up to Christmas. She joins Emma to discuss her recent performance at the Royal Opera House in La Boheme, current role as the angel Clara in the new opera It's A Wonderful Life at the ENO, and to perform a sneak preview from the forthcoming immersive experience of Handel's Messiah. 'Where are you really from?' It's a question the black British charity boss Ngozi Fulani was asked repeatedly at an event earlier this week at Buckingham Palace, she's told the BBC the experience was 'abuse'. Lady Hussey has resigned since the incident. The Palace described the remarks as 'unacceptable and deeply regrettable'. A spokesperson for Prince William said 'racism has no place in our society'. We hear from Ngozi and Emma speaks to Professor Nicola Rollick, author of The Racial Code.
Ahead of her concert next week with the LSO, Tom Service speaks to the pianist Alice Sara Ott who is also preparing to embark on a tour which features lighting and images alongside performances of Chopin's Op 28 preludes, and other contemporary works from her recent Echoes of Life album, to create a multi-media experience that extends the boundaries of what's possible in concert halls. As the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference concludes, Music Matters hears from Managing Director of the London Symphony Orchestra, Kathryn McDowell, Chief Executive of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Michael Eakin, Executive Chairman of Harrison Parrott, Jasper Parrott, and Professor of Geosystem Science and leader of the group responsible for climate modelling at the University of Oxford, Myles Allen, about the degree to which the classical music industry is delivering its own promises to reduce its impact on the environment. With all eyes on Qatar for the opening of the FIFA World Cup, Tom hears from the BBC's Series producer for Arabic Digital Investigative Documentaries, Rosie Garthwaite, about the construction she witnessed of Doha's opera house in the Katara Cultural Centre. He learns how the country has nurtured both Western art forms and cultural institutions, and the potential projection of soft power. Tom joins the soprano Danielle de Niese and tenor Frederick Ballentine during rehearsals for a new production, by English National Opera, of Jake Heggie's It's a Wonderful Life. The composer shares how he adapted the story behind Frank Capra's classic movie, and Tom speaks to the journalist, broadcaster, and author, Matthew Sweet, about the phenomenon of setting operas from film, as well as different roles music plays on both the screen and the stage.
This week we're talking about the exciting opera and dance coming up in time for Christmas. Annilese Miskimmon, Artistic Director at ENO (English National Opera), tells us about re-imagining Frank Capra's enduring and much-loved 1946 Christmas movie ‘It's a Wonderful Life' as an opera, which opens on 25th November at the Coliseum. Adapted by Jake Heggie and Gene Scheer, George Bailey, the down-on-his-luck banker so memorably played by James Stewart in the film, is played by Frederick Ballentine but Clarence the Guardian Angel now becomes Clara, played by soprano Danielle de Niese. Other than the gender swap, the opera is otherwise remarkably faithful to the beloved film and is certain to be a festive treat. In the world of dance, Rambert is already wowing audiences with its adaptation of Peaky Blinders: The Redemption of Thomas Shelby, which opened at the Birmingham Hippodrome and is now on tour and in London at Troubador Wembley Park till 6th November. We're thrilled to be talking to the creator, writer and Executive Producer of Peaky Blinders, Steven Knight, alongside Helen Shute of Rambert. We find out that Steven's always loved ballet and so it was a natural progression to ask him to adapt his multi-award-winning series into a dance theatre show. Tune in to hear how the opera and dance worlds are bursting with innovation and new ideas, including the first-ever football opera Gods of the Game at the Theatre in the Woods at Grange Park Opera, complete with a chorus made up entirely of footy fans who've been trained to sing.

The latest in Tate Britain's series of annual commissions is an installation by the artist Hew Locke. It's called The Procession and is comprised of approximately 150 life-size figures - adults, children, animals - arranged in a hundred-yard-long parade. Each one is unique, dressed in colourful fabrics, many specially printed, and wearing masks. It evokes carnival parades, protest marches and funeral corteges. Tom talks to Hew about how he set about making such an ambitious and complicated artwork and finds out about his fascination with obsolete share certificates. Theatre director Ivo Van Hove and soprano Danielle de Niese join Tom to explore why Jean Cocteau's play La Voix Humane is having a moment, with various stage, screen and opera productions opening this spring. As the war in Ukraine continues, we talk to UNESCO's Assistant Director-General for Culture, Ernesto Ottone, about the organisation's activities protecting Ukrainian culture and heritage artefacts. We also discuss UNESCO's recent report on the economic impact of the pandemic on creativity across the globe. Zack Wheat was overlooked by the baseball Hall of Fame for years. In 1959, after a unanimous vote, Wheat was elected to the Hall – an honor long overdue, but an honor he was able to enjoy in person. When you look back at the history of the great Los Angeles/Brooklyn Dodgers teams, their all-time team reads like a who's who of baseball history. Names like Koufax, Campanella, Hodges, Robinson, Reese, Snider, Garvey, Cey, Lopes, are all names that fans of the Dodgers from coast-to-coast love to recall and reminisce about. But one name that is usually omitted from that all-time great's list is that of Zack Wheat. A star for the Dodgers from 1909 through 1926, Wheat was a career .317 hitter and as late as 1925 when he was 37, playing a full season, Wheat hit .359! He was a hitting machine. On this episode of Sports' Forgotten Heroes, author Joe Niese returns to the podcast for a wonderful conversation about a guy who challenged the system, won … and lost … and was named one of the 100 greatest to ever play the game. Niese, who has been on SFH previously to talk about Gus Dorais, Burleigh Grimes and Andy Pafko, just released a new book, “Zack Wheat”, brings his passion and knowledge about Wheat to make for another terrific discussion about one of the greats – Zack Wheat. The history of flight is full of trial errors; from the stories of Daedalus and Icarus planning escape with wax and feathers, to The Wright Brothers' first successful airplane, human flight has been a dream for humanity for many years. That's what composer Christopher Tin's latest album, To Shiver the Sky, is all about. An "oratorio about the history of flight and mankind's quest to conquer the heavens," ...Sky tells a story of the evolution of this quest for flight, to reach higher than the earthbound. Throughout this album (featuring guest artists such as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Opera Chorus, Danielle de Niese and more), the evolution of flight is paired with the evolution of Western classical music. The album's story is told through the perspective of eleven historical figures, a "who's who" of "astronomers, inventors, visionaries and pilots." Classiclectic host Kurt Hauswirth spoke with Christopher about his album, and how it relates to humanity's efforts to keep

Niese tells the story of being fresh out of a relationship and falling for her Instagram crush. Did they live happily ever after, or was it a disaster?
Baseball outlawed the spitball in 1920. However, each team was allowed to designate two pitchers (if they already threw the spitter) to throw it until they retired. Burleigh Grimes of the Brooklyn (Dodgers) Robins was one of those pitchers. His spitball was quite unique in that he “coated” the ball with a special sap from a type of tree in Polk County, Wisconsin. Grimes continued to use his spitter, whenever he felt necessary throughout his career which ended after the 1934 season. Overall, Grimes won 270 games and was enshrined in baseball’s Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York by the Veteran’s Committee in 1964. A fierce competitor, Grimes never backed down from anyone and even let his teammates know it when he was unhappy with them. This trait - “fierceness” - might also be why so many baseball fans know the name Burleigh Grimes, but so few can tell you much about his career. It was Burleigh’s intense desire to win that actually proved to be a detriment to his career as he was shipped from team to team to team. In fact, Grimes changed addresses nine times during his 19-year career that saw him play for the Pirates (three times) the Dodgers (who were also known as the Robins, and we talk about that in this episode of SFH), the Giants, the Braves, the Cardinals (twice), the Cubs and the Yankees. In fact, after going 1908 in his lone season for John McGraw and the New York Giants, Grimes was traded because he just couldn’t get along with a few of his teammates. Well, maybe “getting along” is too strong, but he let it be known if he wasn’t happy with their play behind him when he was on the mound. And that’s too bad, because Grimes could pitch. He won 270 games during his career and helped four of his teams reach the World Series, coming out on the winning side once, 1931, when he went 2-0 for the Cardinals in the Redbird’s win over the Philadelphia Athletics. Author Joe Niese wrote a terrific biography on Grimes, “Burleigh Grimes, Baseball’s Last Legal Spitballer,” and is here to discuss the terrific career of Grimes and also talks about the unique spitball that Grimes threw. 3 Invaluable Lessons from David Niese You can help other people out and get what you need at the same time. If your project staff is happy, everything starts falling into place. It’s not enough to just be right – you need to spend more time on collaboration and listen to what people are saying and what is going on. This week, host Sue Dyer speaks with David Niese about effectively implementing partnering within your team and organization and why taking the hardline when it comes to managing projects doesn’t always yield a positive outcome. About Guest David Niese (1:16) David Niese was one of the trainers for the Caltrans Fundamentals of Partnering. David helped train over 4,000 different project professionals on the fundamentals of making Partnering work on Caltrans projects. David is a Project Executive at Granite Construction in their large project group. David’s Journey to Becoming Project Executive at Granite Construction (2:50) David grew up in the industry and did a lot of surveying with his dad He got a job at a small engineering firm in San Bernadino, CA He worked with Caltrans for 15 years and then jumped to the private industry For the last five years, David has been at Granite Construction How David Went from SOB to Collaborative Leader (5:50) In his first job as a Resident Engineer, David was a hardliner. He expected his contractor to know what he was supposed to do, and David stuck to the contract. In the end, his contractor went bankrupt and in stepped a new company. David learned that you can hold a contractor to the contract, but it is bad for business; but all the contractors start spending more money. It costs the owner more money if they have to deal with a lot of claims. There are always things we can do to help each other on the contract. If the project staff is happy on both sides, everything just falls into place. Your quality is better, your safety is better, your production rates are better because everyone is happy coming to work. Everyone is working toward the common goal of finishing the project. David’s Advice to Someone Who’s Just Starting Their Career (15:15) Don’t let the daily grind keep you from seeing the big picture When you focus on the little things only, you don’t fully understand what the ramifications might be A mentor is extremely important to have the right perspective How to Lead Your Team When There’s Conflict (17:30) Have your partnering process in place, be sure that you listen and understand the position of other people You can help other people out and get what you need at the same time Listen to see where the conflict might be coming from and to figure out how you can avoid it Using a facilitator can really help What People Can Do to Lead Their Team When It’s Struggling (19:45) The Escalation Ladder can be a huge help with things - go up the chain so you can relieve yourself and others from having to worry about the issue The person at the next level of escalation will probably have a different view on the problem Don’t take things personally, there will always be contract disputes Don’t let conflict affect the work going on in the field Looking for a fair and equitable resolution to the problem is doing your job David’s Approach to His Projects with Alternative Processes (25:23) In the bid/build world there is no qualification process, but in the alternative delivery world, your past performances will affect you getting future work. If you’re going up a company that had no claims and you did, that will put you at a disadvantage. Your ability to successfully complete a contract becomes important in alternative delivery. What David Would Do if He Had an Owner Who Was Not Going to Be Fair and Equitable (27:48) If there is an owner with a reputation for not resolving disputes, they choose not to work with those owners. There’s so much work out there, they get to pick and choose who they do and don’t want to work with. You need to look for an owner who will match your core values. How David Overcame the Very Worst Moment He Faced (29:07) The worst moment was also his worst Partnering ever. There were many disputes, but he didn’t let the contract disputes affect the quality of the work they were doing in the field. In the next project they understood what to do and not do to never let that happen again. He tries not to override subordinates in the escalation ladder and resolve at the lowest level possible. David’s Zone of Genius (31:49) A manager should not be judged on how they manage the “A” players. A true manager can take the “C” players and turn them into “B” players and take the “B” players and turn them into “A” players. You have to keep things from becoming a stumbling block. David is good at looking for future problems down the road and letting employees know before they get there. Always have a contingency plan in place. The Best Advice David’s Ever Received (35:19) It’s not enough to just be right. If not everyone’s on board with what you think is right, it’s not enough. You need to spend more time on collaboration and listen to what people are saying and what is going on. Danielle de Niese, “opera’s coolest soprano”, opens the door of her rehearsal room to Edwina Pitman, as she prepares to make her London West End stage debut. Swapping the world of baroque opera for musical theatre, Danielle will be starring opposite Kelsey Grammar in the award-winning classic musical Man of La Mancha. The daughter of Sri Lankan immigrants in Australia, who began her career aged nine winning a TV pop talent contest, Danielle de Niese has a ferocious work ethic which she applies to every role she takes on, whilst also maintaining the gruelling schedule of one of the most sought-after opera singers on the planet. From her rigorous technique and intense training to careful scrutiny of all her rehearsal footage, de Niese reveals her process of perfecting the emotional heart of a role, which to her is the most important aspect of her performance. We also catch a glimpse of her home life at Glyndebourne, in her off-stage role as one half of the husband-and-wife team behind one of opera's oldest festivals, where de Niese herself became an overnight sensation when she made her debut there as Cleopatra in Handel’s Giulio Cesare in 2005.
In April 2019 a new opera with music by the composer Tarik O’Regan had its premiere at Houston Grand Opera. Called “The Phoenix”, it’s based on the life of Lorenzo Da Ponte, best known as Mozart’s librettist. The opera has been years in the making, from Tarik’s first idea to the final rewrites. We follow Tarik through months of creating the music, the orchestrations and the workshop processes with his collaborator, the librettist and director John Caird. From Tarik’s original base in the former Swaziland, now known as eSwatini, to meetings in London and rehearsals in Houston, we hear how the process of working on an opera is a global business and how the music evolves over a long period from first sketches to opening night. This is an updated version of the podcast. We changed the ending because the next podcast will be with the opera star Danielle de Niese, rather than Iris Van Herpen. We’ll get to Iris soon.

Lyric soprano Danielle de Niese was a star performer at Last Night of the Proms 2015. It was another milestone in this Australian-born American star's glittering career. Growing up, Danielle won various talent and television competitions and debuted at New York's prestigious Metropolitan Opera House when she was 19 years old. She says she knew she wanted to sing opera from the age of eight. Described as "opera's coolest soprano", Danielle is best known for her performances of Handel, Mozart, baroque music, as well as her reality TV shows, including The Diva Diaries. South African soprano Pretty Yende discovered opera by chance. She was 16 years old and watching a television advertisement for an airline, which featured The Flower Duet, from the opera Lakme by Léo Delibes. Pretty fell in love with the sound and instantly wanted to imitate it. She went to be classically trained at Cape Town University and then got a place at the Accademia Teatro alla Scala, in Milan. In 2011 Pretty won first prize in Placido Domingo's Operalia competition and two years later she shot to fame when, at short notice, she had to stand in to perform Countess Adele in Rossini's opera, Le Comte Ory. This was Pretty's Metropolitan Opera House debut. (Picture: Opera singers Danielle de Niese (left) and Pretty Yende. Credits: Chris Dunlop/Kim Fox)
