Drew Dekes & Annik Lemire discuss everything you need to know about Geoff Molson's press conference and the Habs' recent front office changes including the firing of GM Marc Bergevin, Trevor Timmins, and Paul Wilson. Now in charge is Jeff Gorton who has been hired as Vice President of Hockey Operations for the Montreal Canadiens, leading to big questions about the future composition of the front office and coaching staff. #montrealcanadiens #habs #geoffmolson

Matt Murray is now an extremely expensive AHL player. We discuss a little football from Sunday; The sons of two former NHL stars get nasty with each other and Brendan Lemieux apparently bites Brady Tkachuk. As you polish off your Thanksgiving leftovers, I'll serve up plenty of dessert to satisfy your sports tooth as Episode #226 is primed and ready to go. On deck: (5:39) It was another ho-hum weekend for the NFL after an underwhelming Thanksgiving holiday schedule as the season continues to drag along. I'll highlight the winners (Buffalo & San Francisco) and losers (an early epitaph for my beloved Pittsburgh Steelers) and other key takeaways (The officiating throughout the league. The end of Cam Newton. New England's success. I'm still not sold. I explain why. A look at the Week 13 slate. The first ballot nominees for the Pro Football Hall of Fame and more.) (35:37) The college football season has superseded the NFL, in my opinion, as Jim Harbaugh FINALLY slayed the Ohio State Buckeye dragon as they upend their rivals and their playoff chances in the process. Is it time to celebrate in Ann Arbor? Why this win isn't the end all, be all for the Wolverines? I'll discuss the chances for Alabama as they'll face the #1 team in the country in Georgia. Do they have a shot? Also, will some potential fresh blood in the Final Four bring morePlus, all of the other possibilities for teams to sneak into the top four (i.e. Notre Dame, Oklahoma St. and Baylor) as Conference Championship Week is on the horizon. (49:57) MLB has surprised yours truly as there has been plenty of activity on the transaction front, with the Mets being at the forefront of the free agent party, which delivered four players including three time Cy Young Award winner, Max Scherzer (NOTE: This was made official after recording, but I do share some thoughts on it.) Are the Mets done with improving their team? What other reinforcements do they need to compete? Will the top shortstops (i.e. Carlos Correa, Trevor Story, Corey Seager, Javier Baez) among others, get signed before the Collective Bargaining Agreement expires at midnight on December 1st? I'll have a hot take on that, as well as, how shrewd were the Tampa Bay Rays were in signing budding superstar, Wander Franco to a long term deal? (Although it comes with a caveat) And I know the Yankees and Brian Cashman are laying in the weeds as I'm sure a blockbuster trade and/or free agent signing is forthcoming. (1:09:17) The NBA season is at the quarter mark. Besides the Warriors being a top story to date, the Suns have been scorching out West nipping at the heels of Golden State. The East has been a log jam early on as 13 teams are separated by six games. There was no fallout from the Pistons and Lakers second go round, where Isaiah Stewart and LeBron James were suspended last week, but will there be any carryover in Miami as Nikola Jokic and Markieff Morris re-acquaint themselves after their run-in a few weeks back in Denver? (1:13:52) College basketball talk before December? You better believe it as I'll get into Gonzaga's busy week where they destroy #2 UCLA (which was a far cry from the Final Four game back in April) but then lose a tight one against #5 Duke. Even #4 Kansas was upset by Dayton as the sport is looking to take a page out of what the college football season has exhibited to this point. (1:17:40) The Islanders season has now taken a turn for the worse as they've played more home games than they've won AND scored goals combined! (Four home games, three goals scored, zero games won) Now, with a COVID outbreak throughout the team that's postponed a few games from their schedule, it begs the question. Is this break a blessing or a curse? The Canadiens front office has cleaned house as GM Marc Bergevin has been fired where assistant GM, Scott Mellanby, stepped down abruptly. Is there something going on in Montreal that we don't know about? And where will former Sharks forward, Evander Kane end up, now that he's a free agent? (1:25:01) I'll touch on the charity golf event between Brooks Koepka vs. Bryson Dechambeau in where the post match interviews between the two were more entertaining than what took place on the course as Koepka dominates Dechambeau over the 12 hole contest. (1:27:00) Lastly, I'll have my Hero and Zero of the Week. Alex flies solo in the first installment of 'Raw Takes', TSP's unfiltered bonus episodes. He bemoans his Montreal Canadiens defeat at the hands of the the "Champa Bay" Lightning, and praises the prowess of goaltenders Carey Price and Conn Smythe winner Andrei Vasilevsky. Alex discusses Lauren Thiesen's thought-provoking article on Defector that ponders how good the Habs truly are, briefly touches on the key decisions GM Marc Bergevin needs to make this offseason, and what the future holds for this upstart team.
Three years ago the Montreal Canadiens were sitting at the bottom of the NHL standings and ripe for a rebuild. Instead of blowing up the team, GM Marc Bergevin looked West, to the expansion Vegas Golden Knights, for a different approach to constructing his roster. Now as the Habs and Knights face off in the Stanley Cup Semifinals, the Athletic's Arpon Basu tells us how Bergevin managed to rebuild the Canadiens in the Knights image and why that just might have saved his job.You can read Arpon Basu's story about the Canadiens here: https://theathletic.com/2647540/2021/06/11/a-look-at-how-the-canadiens-were-built-reveals-road-map-drawn-by-the-golden-knights/
Conor, Shaun and Eric discuss the Habs' sweep of the Winnipeg Jets, the pressure on GM Marc Bergevin and of course, get to their fab four...frozen treats!
NHL Topics: Here’s our weekly snapshot.News:Fans are returning to the NHL rinks. Rates are going down, but all of NY state is allowing 10% in all arenas. Rangers had fans on Thursday. Isles and Sabres on Sunday. Canada will probably not have fans this season (3% vaccinated in Canada, want 70%). Claude Julien was fired as head coach of the Canadiens on Wednesday despite his team being in a playoff spot at 9-5-4. Won only 2 of their last 8 and were 8 pts behind the Leafs for 1st. Dominique Ducharme was named interim coach and the team also added Alex Burrows to the staff. The Habs also fired Kirk Muller who served as HC while Julien had surgery for a heart procedure while in the playoffs. GM Marc Bergevin is in the hot seat as well after an extremely busy off season (added Allen, Edmundson, Toffoli, Anderson, etc.) as he only has this current year on his contract. Ducharme is considered an up and coming coach, but how will the organization view him in the offseason? Who’s next? DJ Smith in Ott, Blashill in DET, Krueger in Buff, Torts in CBJ, Hynes in Nashville?Sabres star C Jack Eichel was removed from the lineup during warmups on Thursday against the Devils. Coach Ralph Krueger said it was an injury. Eichel came out and contradicted his HC’s statement and said it was an injury from the Devils game on Tuesday and the team knew he would be out. Eichel returned in Sunday’s loss to the Flyers after missing 2 games. Eichel was also the #2 ranked player on the big board. Many execs think he will be traded by the deadline and a few said the Rangers definitely. Darren Dreger reported that Eichel had officially asked for a trade. Per Dreger “There’s some who wonder if Eichel’s hurt, but his body language and the way he’s playing doesn’t look good at all”. Could he pull a James Harden?Another Buffalo player that continues to have issues with the team is Jeff Skinner. He was sat for 3 consecutive games (returned Sunday and skated 12 mins) and his agent, Don Meehan (one of the top guys out there) had a talk with GM Kevyn Adams on their options. Skinner has a NMC and is owed 54 million over the next 6 seasons. If they were to buy him out, they would owe 37 million over 12 years. Skinner might have to waive his NMC or allow more teams into the list if he wants out. Panarin still a week away at least as he deals with the fallout from the Russian story about his domestic violence incident. Many players, the KHL and law enforcement officials have come out and said it is not true. Many NHL execs, including Steve Yzerman, want the draft to be pushed back so the 2021 prospects have a chance to play. The teams also want scouts in the building. Lundqvist posted a video of his skating and making saves. Says it will be months before he can say if he will play again. Just good to see him out there and in pads. Pretty funny occurrence last week. There was a 3:36 sec delayed penalty against the Kings vs the Blues. Possibly a new record (not recorded). Torry Krug with 2:53 sec shift. Elliot Friedman relayed a story about Gary Galley and Rob Blake. Galley was playing for the Kings and had a shift that was closing in on 3 minutes. Both him and his D partner were gassed and couldn’t get the puck out of their zone. Blake jumped on the ice and took a too many men penalty. Galley asked him why he did that and Blake said “I just felt really bad for you”. Brett Connolly put on waivers by Cats. Oilers add Stalock off waivers. Binnington went off on SJ players. Went over to the bench after Sharks players made comments. Then attached players on the way out, including goalie Devan Dubnyk. STL is fiery and doing quite well in the absence of Parayko. Jordan Kyrou at 5 on 5 pts per 60 is one of the best in the league. 3 stars of the week:Vasilevskiy - 79 saves on 81 shots, 3-0, .67GAA, .975svpct, 2SO against Canes (x2) and Stars. 2nd behind Fleury on the season in both GAA and SVPCT. P Kane - league leading 3-5-8pts in 3 wins last week, including 400th goal. 2nd in NHL in pts with 11-23-34 in 23 games (McDavid with 40pts). 9th US born player and 100th overall player with 400G. Zuccarello - 2-6-8pts in 4 games to help Wild to 2nd place in West. In 7 games this season, Zucc has 3-8-11pts. NHL announced its fan skills at home contest on TikTok/Instagram. March 1 to April 28, fans can submit videos of themselves performing hockey skills of all levels in any of 5 categories: shootout, accuracy, celly, trick shot and stickhandling. I suggest a video of Steve backhanding a puck to my groin, JJ dangling Kevin or Valvano uppercutting someone (accuracy). Or Dean trucking Schmim. Montreal defenceman Joel Edmundson signed a 4 year deal with the Habs after they traded for him. Joel says he likes the moves that GM Marc Bergevin made in free agency to improve the team. Joel also says it’ll be a dream come true when he puts the jersey on for the first time as it was his dad’s favorite team growing up.
We have a couple of announcements for you! In today’s episode, we’re joined by Joe Giorno, our September Listener of the Month. He told us what he loved about us, what he didn’t like, and how much we’ve grown. Next week, we will be joined with our October Listener of the Month, followed by former ECHL & Europe player, Colin Mulvey. Joe Thornton has finally signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Jumbo was open and honest saying he and the Leafs have been trying for this since 2017. Where does Joe play this upcoming season, and what do we make of all the moves the Leafs have made? What are the expectations? Speaking of which, the people of Montreal should have high ones. GM Marc Bergevin has really put a nice team together and locking in some key pieces. Brendan Gallagher and Jake Allen have both signed and are poised to give the rest of the Canadian teams a run for their money. The speculation of an all Canadian division had us thinking where exactly each team would fall. Among the Leafs and Habs, where do Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, and Winnipeg place with all due respect to Ottawa. We give a little prediction. In this episode, the guys are joined by two good friends of the podcast, Jonathan Kyriacou (Keer-ee-a-koo) and Adam James to chat about the seven Canadian NHL teams, and what their needs are, as we approach the NHL trade deadline.* For the record, Jon and Adam are the only two guests on the podcast who have made a second appearance. * That’s a pretty high honour if we do say so ourselves.Jonathan Kyriacou:Jon is a well-spoken guy with a great hockey mind. He has experience in scouting and player development for various hockey franchises, including the Wellington Dukes of the OJHL, the Ottawa 67s of the OHL, and even the Toronto Maple Leafs of the NHL. In this episode, Jon talks about his most recent experience in organizing the Ivy Sports Conference at Western University. During this event, he was fortunate enough to work with a few high-profile names in the NHL community, including Arizona Coyotes GM John Chayka, and former NHLer Paul “Biznasty” Bissonnette.Adam James:Adam is a long-time friend of the show. He played over 200 games of Junior hockey over his five year career in the EOJHL and the CCHL2. Adam is also a pretty big fan of the Montreal Canadiens. In this episode, Adam chimes in for some Habs talk, as we discuss the trajectory of the slumping Canadiens, and provide suggestions as to what GM Marc Bergevin should do to address both the short and long-term goals of the hockey club.
This week, the guys were thrilled to welcome to the podcast, the First Lady of the Montreal media, Ms. Chantal Machabee. Chantal was incredibly generous with her time and answers and the interview eventually turned into a conversation. Chantal talked about her career, the Habs, her dream interview and shared a touching story about GM Marc Bergevin. The guys also talked about Bergevin’s media tour, Ryan Poehling going to Laval, the opening night roster and Geoff Molson’s baller move on Twitter. Episode 51 is a great way to start the season.
In Episode 37, Mike and John got back into the thick of things with an overview of the wild NHL Entry Draft weekend which saw the Habs draft Cole Caufield - billed as the best natural goal scorer in the draft. Former Hab P.K. Subban is on the move, the discussion of whether or not GM Marc Bergevin should try to sign a free agent to address the very few voids on the roster, and, touched on the harsh reality of the cap era. They capped off the episode with very special guest, Mr. Luc Gelinas. Luc spoiled the guys with some great insight into the Habs and unforgettable stories. John's joined by Eric Engels of Sportsnet and the Boston Globe's Matt Porter to discuss a variety of topics: - GM Marc Bergevin's revival in Montreal - Bounce backs galore: Domi, Drouin, Price - Kotkaniemi tracking towards 1C status - Should Boston break up their top line? - Covering Zdeno Chara day to day
Veteran Tomas Plekanec, waived by GM Marc Bergevin to terminate his contract, has reached the end of his NHL career and will retire as a member of the Canadiens, albeit not under the circumstances he would have wanted. The Athletic Support gives one last hurrah to the team's longest serving player, a title that will now be held by Carey Price. After a decent start to the season, the 31-year old netminder has faltered lately in a way that is reminiscent of last season's struggles. Where do we go from here ? Learn more about your ad choices.
