Jenson Summary"Good Pictures Bad Pictures" by Kristen A. Jenson is a children's book designed to help parents educate their children about pornography and the importance of internet safety. The book aims to provide a framework for discussing the difference between appropriate (good) and inappropriate (bad) images in a way that is age-appropriate and understandable for young readers. Summary:The narrative follows a child who is taught by their parents about the concept of good and bad pictures. "Good pictures" are depicted as images that make the child feel safe, happy, and comfortable, such as family photos, nature scenes, and illustrations from books. On the other hand, "bad pictures" are images that can cause feelings of confusion, fear, or discomfort, often portraying inappropriate or sexual content. The book emphasizes the importance of recognizing these images and encourages children to share their feelings and experiences with their parents. Jenson provides practical advice for children on how to handle situations when they encounter bad pictures, such as covering their eyes, walking away, and telling a trusted adult. Additionally, the author stresses the value of developing a strong moral compass and understanding boundaries. The underlying message is to empower children to make safe choices and utilize the tools available to them when faced with potential exposure to harmful content.By addressing the topic gently and directly, "Good Pictures Bad Pictures" serves as a resource for families to foster open communication about difficult subjects and guide children toward safe internet usage.Chapter 3 Good Pictures Bad Pictures AuthorKristen A. This is episode 3 in a month-long series on Parenting in the Digital Age and Protecting our Kids from Pornography. In this episode, I share practical tips for talking to our kids of any age about pornography and helping them develop a “porn plan”—that is a way to respond to pornography exposure as quickly and safely as possible. Some other key takeaways from this episode are: *We are built for connection and few things cause greater disconnection than pornography. *Corrie ten Boom said there is no pit so deep that God's love is not deeper still. I'd add, even the pit of pornography. * Pornography is a health crisis. It impacts the very body, the mind and the very soul of the person who is consuming it. * Pornography is not just a male issue. It is a human issue. It impacts every one of us—man, woman, boy and girl. * Conversation is the number one tool in keeping our kids safe from pornography. Routers, software, and parental controls are important, but if your kids can't talk to you when those things fail, then all the safeguards you have put into place mean nothing. *Your littles need a definition of what porn is, but give them the least amount of information needed to keep them safe. *Tell them: “Porn is bad for your body, brain and heart. I want to keep you safe!” *We want to talk to our kids before they are exposed to pornography. That is why we begin these conversations when they are around the age of 5, 6 or 7 years old. *Your middles need to know that porn is dangerous, and they need a way out if they see it. Give them an escape plan. *Help them see porn impacts their brain and heart by explaining what objectification is. Read my article here for help. *They don't need a smart phone. They need a safe phone! *Check out Gabb phones and use my code GRETA for a discount. *Also look at this article for more safe phone choices. *Your teens need you to discuss porn with them even if you never have before. Now is the time! *Also discuss topics like sexting, nudes, and sextortion. Do they know what to do if they are in those situations? *Delay social media for as long as possible with teens. Not before 16 and I suggest waiting until after high school. *Your young adults don't need you to preach to them but rather to invite them into conversations on this topic. *My challenge to you: have the first conversation about pornography with your kids this week! *And look for tickets to my online seminar on protecting kids from porn happening in May! Books I recommend in this episode: *Good Pictures Bad Pictures Jr. *Good Pictures Bad Pictures *How to Talk to Your Kids About Pornography *Chasing Love *A Students Guide to Culture *Website: Fight the New Drug Don't forget to subscribe to this podcast, and I'd be so very grateful if you leave a 5 star rating of the podcast and also a quick review. Does keeping your kids safe on the internet ever feel like a game of Whack-a-mole - frenzied and unending, always trying to fend off the threats that pop up? Or maybe you've been afraid your kids would be or feel left out if you had more limits on their screens? You've seen the documentaries and the research of how addictive social media can be and the average age in which kids are exposed to pornography keeps going down and yet, we know on some level what we forbid our kids to do has the potential to become the only thing they want. Families around you probably have a wide range of tech norms in their households. Kids relentlessly request screen time. Honestly, sometimes we long for the quiet of a kid mesmerized by a screen. What's a mom to do? Enter this week's guest, Chris McKenna, dad of four and founder of Protect Young Eyes, an organization devoted to helping parents create safe digital spaces for their kids. Chris encourages us that while there are real things our kids need protecting from on the internet, there are real ways we can foster digital trust and create safe digital spaces for our kids. Chris helps us understand that rather than a controller, our kids want a coach - someone to teach them how to use technology in ways that honor God, themselves, and others. At what age should we start having conversations with our kids about our body parts, privacy, what's appropriate and not appropriate - and, what does that look like? How has our rapidly advancing technological world impacted the conversations we need to be having with our spouses and children? What safe guards should we have on our phones, tablets and computers when it comes to inappropriate pictures and videos? What can we do if we or a loved one is trapped in a pornography (or other sexual) addiction? Finally, prayer for those dealing with a pornography addiction. We pray for Jesus to break the chains of sin in your life to give you Freedom In Christ!See below for many resources! Nathan and Anna Sutherland are the founders of Gospel TechWhy Gospel Tech?We believe Jesus came to set us free. Often, our technology gets in the way of our relationship with God and others. We want to see children and parents alike freed from the hold tech has on them. Our goal is simple: Teach families to see where tech is helping and where it is hurting their call to love God and love others; teach the difference between Tool Tech and Drool Tech; provide resources to develop healthy habits; build a community of support as families create new relationships with tech.https://www.gospeltech.net/https://storage.snappages.site/ZKJSB6/assets/files/Axis-Parents-Guide-to-Pornography-Bundle-22.pdfResources mentioned in the show: https://gabbwireless.com/https://www.covenanteyes.com/?msclkid=382071a11689197e8e2b117f05a10687https://www.drdougweiss.com/product/lust-free-living-dvd/https://www.protectyoungminds.org/good-pictures-bad-pictures-jr/Even young children have access to the internet and they deserve to be armed early against its dangers.Good Pictures Bad Pictures Jr. makes it easy for parents to protect young children ages 3-6 with the Turn, Run & Tell plan!Written by the best-selling author of the original Good Pictures Bad Pictures book, the Jr. version is a comfortable way for parents to empower their young kids with their first internal filter!http://www.godmadeallofme.com/God Made All of Me is a simply-told, beautifully-illustrated story to help families talk about these sensitive issues with two- to eight-year-old children. Because the private parts of our bodies are private, the home is the ideal environment where a child should learn about his or her body and how it should be treated by others. God Made All of Me starts from the fundamental truth that God created everything and applies that truth—the doctrine of creation—to kids and their bodies. It equips parents to talk with both boys and girls about their bodies and to help them understand the difference between the appropriate and inappropriate touch of others.Go to Freedom Families Community (locals.com) for everything you need to know, all resources and to interact with E.J. and other Freedom Families!Listen to all the Freedom Families episodes on any podcast app!https://freedomfamilies.buzzsprout.com/

We talk about protecting our children from pornography ... but if they've seen it, have we failed? What should we do AFTER our kids are exposed to porn? Our world is saturated with inappropriate images, and chances are that as hard as we try, our kids are likely to be exposed. You are not a failure! But what do you do now? We can help with that. Kristen Jenson joins us on today's show to talk about her S.M.A.R.T. plan, which she developed just for this purpose. It includes 5 steps to help parents after their kids have been exposed to pornography. S - Stay calm. It’s critical to deal with your own emotions first! M - Make a plan. Don’t confront your child until you’ve figured out a game plan. A - Assist your kids to sort out their feelings: Porn is confusing to kids and parents can help kids figure out their feelings and triggers. R - Regularly check in with your kids: How to keep the conversation going! T - Train your family: Porn can hurt the entire family, and everyone needs to be involved in the family’s defense plan. Are you connected with your loved ones? Do your kids talk to you about their feelings? Does your family set aside regular and routine time to talk and connect without electronics? This is a struggle many families face today. With technology being so widely accessible, families can often not even realize that they are connecting to their screens, but not to each other. What can we do to foster and facilitate genuine connection and conversation with our children, family members, and significant others? Authentic Relationships Built On Trust Kat Rowan says that she has found a way that works. Kat is the founder and Creative Director of TiffinTalk, and says that her company offers a unique way to facilitate conversation between parents and children. More specificially, Kat wanted to help children develop and maintain critical and creative thinking skills in helping all people talk to one another directly, without technology as an intermediary. The result was TiffinTalk, a company that makes daily cards that encourage people to talk to each other, that began with more than 4000 homemade lunch notes for her daughters. Kat explains, "It’s really amazing to me, and it still is amazing, the power of talk. There is so much research out there, that points to the addictive behaviors that we’re having with technology and how it is interfering with our empathy and our personal relationships because we’re not talking. A text message is not talking." Honesty Helps Build Connection Connection is a basic human need and having connected relationships gives way to authentic honesty and vulnerability, which is essential in feeling unconditionally loved and developing empathy and other social skills. Anne, founder of Betrayal Trauma Recovery, said her children love anticipating the cards for the next day and collecting them throughout the week. Anne goes on to describe her experience using the cards with her son, saying, "He absolutely loved it. He wanted to talk about how he’s a little bit lonely and he’d like to change that. I didn’t have any advice for him, I just said I’m not sure, what do you think you would do? I didn’t realize how excited they would be to really talk about things and how it would foster openness and sharing." Kat adds, "Every child deserves one-on-one time with their parent, even if we can’t do it every day and we have to just squeeze it in, but where we turn off our technology. I say no pings, no rings, no dings. Just taking a few minutes with that child and giving them your full attention is so important. You really learn so much about them." Why Open Conversation Is Important During this Christmas or Hanukkah or holiday season, whatever it is for you, if you’re looking for awesome meaningful gifts for your kids, I encourage you to go to TiffinTalk.com, and also check out our books page. We’ve just redesigned it. We have so many books on our page that are really helpful for children and they’re excellent gifts for Christmas. Like Good pictures/Bad Pictures, and Good Pictures/Bad Pictures Jr, and How to Talk to Your Kids About Pornography, and 30 days of Sex Talks. You can find all of the books that we have recommend here. A big giant thank you to all of you who donated for GivingTuesday. We really, really appreciate it. Kristen A. Jenson is the author of the Good Pictures Bad Pictures series of read-aloud books including the best-selling Good Pictures Bad Pictures: Porn-Proofing Today’s Young Kids and Good Pictures Bad Pictures Jr.: A Simple Plan to Protect Young Minds. She is the founder of ProtectYoungMinds.org, a website dedicated to helping parents empower their kids to resist and reject pornography. Kristen is a popular guest on radio and TV broadcasts as well as podcasts and webinars. She is a leader in the Safeguard Alliance of the National Coalition to End Sexual Exploitation and has testified before the Washington State Senate Law and Justice Committee on the public health crisis of pornography. Kristen continues to be a strong voice for protecting children from all forms of sexual exploitation. Kristen is the mother of two daughters, and a son who is waiting for her in heaven. Her latest honor is becoming a grandma! She lives with her husband and sassy chocolate Schnoodle puppy in the beautiful state of Washington. Kristen earned a B.A. in English Literature and an M.A. in Organizational Communication. This is a difficult topic to discuss, but I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to talk about. Kristen tells us that porn is predatory. Kids do not have to look for it, it is looking for them. It will find them. The discussion needs to be centered around what our kids can do when porn finds them. Kristen offers several resources on her site to help parents with this topic, with media literacy, and creating a plan to help our families navigate this over-sexualized culture. Help children understand three things: what pornography is teach our children that pornography is dangerous have a plan for what to do when they see pornography Learn why filters are good for our devices, but more than that, we need to help our children develop internal filters. We need to be the ones talking to our children about pornography and sex so that we become the authority. They don't want to be the ones who don't understand when their peers refer to these things, so they are going to seek out this information. Parents need to be the authority and give their children permission to talk to them about these things. Protect Young Minds has amazing resources to help parents learn how to become their child's mentor to talk through difficult topics, and talk out big emotions. Parents can become the safety for kids who need to understand, and navigate their development into adulthood. As Kristen says, put on our big girl/big boy pants and talk about this stuff. Note: around timestamp 30:55 is a trigger story. I left it to illustrate why children need to know all human anatomy, not just their own, and they need to know proper names of the body parts. This story illustrates why this is so important.
