Fall is here! There is so much to do in fall in Kansas City that sometimes it's hard to know where to begin. We discuss something new we plan to try, something we always do, and something we plan to do at home with our families. Something Old Sarah and her family always get the Johnson Farms season pass. She loves being able to pop over there for an hour and not feel the need to make it an entire day (which is easy to do there!) Megan and her family love attending Deanna Rose Farmstead's Night of the Living Farm. Her kids are almost 8 and 11 and still love this great event. Buy tickets in advance! The Coffeys also love the Jack's Hollow spooky drive through in Gardner. Sign up for a spot online- it's free but they accept donations of unwrapped gifts for the charitable organization Secret Santa. Something New Before kids, Megan and her husband would frequent this awesome annual event but then... kids. This year they are planning to take their kids down to the Plaza Art Fair. It runs Friday, September 19 through Sunday, September 21. More information can be found here! Megan also hopes to take her Dogman-loving son to Dogman the Musical at the Folly Theater! Tickets are on sale now. Sarah is going to try out the Renaissance Festival, as well as attend Beauty and the Beast at Music Hall. Check out our Renaissance Festival guide here! At Home Simmer pots are something that Sarah has been wanting to try out for awhile and this is her year to shine. Send all good-smelling simmer recipes her way! Megan has never been able to figure out a fall front porch display due to paralyzing indecision. This year she plans to keep her mums alive and add a little more decor! Be sure to check out our 101 Things to Do This Fall list, as well- lots of free options there! Tag us at @kansascitymomcollective and tell us what fall things you're up to! What catches their eye could make them cry! Survey your kid's play area for liquids like fingernail polish or colorful cleaning products they may mistake as a beverage. To avoid this, we suggest storing these products out of sight and reach of children as well as keeping potent liquid in their original container. An additional precaution is to never set an item like this on a table where it could mistakenly be forgotten. Children's Mercy Kansas City is built for kids. In this episode, we sit down with a Kansas City TV news reporter Abby Eden. Abby has spent years telling the stories that shape our communities — while managing the beautiful chaos of raising a family. From the childhood spark that drew her to the newsroom, to the challenges of covering difficult events, she shares an inside look at the fast paced, ever-changing world of journalism. When she's not working or parenting, Abby's an avid runner, lifelong learner, and perpetual consumer of information — always curious, always connected Need to help your little swimmers ...and their swimmer's ear? Kids normally describe swimmer's ear as: itching, painful, loss of hearing, a feeling of fullness in their ear, or a sharp pain when chewing or tugging on the lobe. To combat this, we suggest using a hair dryer on the lowest speed to gently dry water that remains in the ear. If your child gets swimmers ear often and you know they do not have a punctured ear drum, you can use equal parts white vinegar and rubbing alcohol as a drying solution. Another precaution is to warn your young ones about putting foreign objects into the ear canal which can lead to similar symptoms. Children's Mercy Kansas City is built for kids. On today's episode, we're honored to hear from Lou Eisenbrandt, who in the late 1960s was a young nurse who answered the call to serve in Vietnam. What she witnessed, what she endured, and what she carried home with her became the foundation for a lifetime of reflection and advocacy. Her experience didn't end when the war did. In the years since, she's written two books and spoken to a variety of audiences- helping shine a long-overdue spotlight on the women who served in Vietnam. And when Parkinson's disease entered her story, she met it with the same strength and openness that's defined her life. Today we will talk about her journey through war, healing, motherhood, and purpose—and what it means to carry a story for so many others. Growing up in a small Illinois town, Lou joined the Army to "see the world." After graduating as a Registered Nurse in June 1968, she attended officers' basic training, at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, then headed to Ft. Dix New Jersey, her first duty assignment. In September 1969, she received orders for Vietnam, arriving there on November 1. During her year at the 91 st Evac Hospital in Chu Lai, she cared for GIs, South Vietnamese soldiers and civilians, even Viet Cong and NVA soldiers. From malaria and hepatitis to double amputees, massive head traumas and deadly gunshot wounds, she saw it all. Her book, Vietnam Nurse, Mending and Remembering, published in June 2015, chronicles her experiences. She takes you through the sights and sounds of combat nursing, waterskiing on the South China Sea, a weekend jeep trip with flak jackets and helmets, and surviving early-morning rocket attacks. Since 1970, she has made 4 return trips to Vietnam. In September 2014, she joined 11 other vets, all male, 12 College of the Ozarks students and several faculty members, to visit sites where each of the vets had been stationed during the war. The trip was sponsored by the college and became one of the motivating factors for completing her book. For the past 40 years, Lou has been sharing her experiences with students, veterans, and community groups. In addition, she has served on the boards of directors for numerous not-for-profit organizations and is currently a board member of the Veterans' Voices Writing Project. She is a past member of the People with Parkinson's Advisory Council of the Parkinson's Foundation. She has been employed as a travel agent, children's cooking instructor, and stained-glass artisan. Her other interests are: travel, photography, golf, gardening, and grandchildren. Lou is passionately involved in finding a cure for Parkinson's Disease, which she has lived with for 22 years as a result of exposure to Agent Orange. In her latest book, published in May 2022 and titled Unsteady as She Goes: Battling Parkinson's After Vietnam, she shares her thoughts on living her best life with a chronic, progressive disease. She and her husband Jim have been married for 53 years and live in Leawood Kansas. They have two children and two grandchildren. If it's loose - it is no use! While we gear up for summer, we want to remind parents that bike helmets save lives! A properly fitting helmet should sit about two finger widths above the eyebrow, remain level, and have a chin strap that is snug. Children's Mercy Kansas City is built for kids. Traditional schooling is not for every kid or every family. Our conversation today is with Vanessa Knight, a local mom who found this to be true for her own family, and started an organization to create community among other families like hers called AnySchoolers. AnySchoolers is one of Vanessa's heart projects after seeing that the world of schooling outside the traditional classroom needed a networking and connections infrastructure. "With what we know about how adaptive the brain is, how it learns, what the ideal environment is for learning, our society needs to think about educating children in a completely different way. Learning happens anytime, anywhere, with anyone, so we actually actively limit opportunities for exploration, adaptation and curiosity when we limit learning to a building/classroom. I do believe that this is part of the reason that we see many of the issues in our society that most parents are concerned about." AnySchoolers is a grassroots 501c3 nonprofit organization with the goal of national advocacy, resourcing, & connection on several levels for families who want to educate secularly outside of or in hybrid collaboration with the traditional school system. It was founded in 2022 by two seasoned parents, a mental health professional (Vanessa) and an education professional, working together to imagine a new community with no barriers to participation, safety on every level, and reciprocity between families. AnySchoolers families are preschoolers, virtual and hybrid schoolers, world schoolers, road schoolers, forest/farm/fine arts schoolers, homeschoolers, traveling schoolers, families who have children both in and out of traditional school and everything in between. They are widening the scope of how, with whom, and where learning happens - not just within the walls of a school building. AnySchoolers are also widening their reach to new communities around the United States and abroad. Our guest, Vanessa, is a 44 year old mother of four ages 18 to 8, a professional counselor and owner of a Kansas City counseling practice, Secure, that has served the metro for 15+ years. Vanessa studied music, art and writing for her bachelors degrees, which evolved to psychology and counseling for higher ed. Vanessa and her family live most of the time in the Historic Northeast of KC, and also live part time in Belize, Central America. In KC, the Knights have an urban microfarm with fruit trees, flowers and vegetables growing, chickens, and all the things that go with them. Vanessa has a special love of the natural world and has several side projects, including training to teach Morning Altars, primate studies, and embroidering on the go. Every new mom and family has a unique story to tell about the birth of their baby. While many of those stories are filled with joy, some can be marked by unexpected challenges. So what happens when the birth experience doesn't go according to plan? Today we'll dive into a sensitive topic that's getting a lot of attention right now – birth trauma. This type of trauma doesn't always mean a worst-case scenario, like a NICU stay or a C-section, but rather those moments where things don't go according to plan, and the experience leaves an emotional or physical mark. Join us as we talk with Dr. Natasha Ahmed, an OB-GYN with HCA Midwest Health about what birth trauma is and what to do if your birth plan doesn't go as expected. HCA Midwest Health hospitals deliver more babies in the Kansas City region each year. With four labor and delivery hospitals across the Kansas City area, we make it convenient to receive exceptional pregnancy and childbirth care. Visit HCAMidwest.com to find a doctor near you. We are here on today's episode with the team from the Golden Scoop, Lindsey Krumbholz, Kim Manford, and Golden Scooper, Jill Witwer. The Golden Scoop is a local ice cream and coffee shop (now with two locations) with the mission of providing meaningful employment for people with developmental disabilities. It's one of those places where you go and are instantly in a better mood because of it. We hope this interview has the same effect! Lindsay Krumbholz is Golden Scoop's Chief Mission Officer. She graduated from Saint Thomas Aquinas High School in Overland Park, Kansas and has a degree in early childhood/special education from Pittsburg State University. She started her career as a behavior assistant at Olathe School District, working with students on the autism spectrum. She moved to another role to learn Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and launched in-home therapy for a small company. For 12 years, she provided in-home services for special needs clients ranging from 18 months to 39 years old. Lindsay's focus turned to working with families on development of independent living skills and preparation for special needs adolescents to gain employment and potentially transition to living on their own as adults. Lindsay listened and understood the concerns of the families she worked with throughout Kansas City, which led her to develop The Golden Scoop. Kim Manford is Golden Scoop's Social Media Director. Kim earned degrees in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Special Education from the University of Kansas, and for almost 30 years, she has served as a Preschool Director in the Kansas City area. Kim joined The Golden Scoop as a volunteer when they first opened and quickly fell in love with the mission and amazing staff. She has a passion for hospitality, leading people, and sharing the Golden Scoop story through social media. Have fun in the sun - safely! We all know the story of Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas. But, did you know a Kansas City dad is responsible for the Grinch's story sequel? On today's episode, we are visiting with author Alastair Heim, who now writes under the Dr. Seuss name, as well as his own. He is the author of 20 children's books including the #1 NY Times Best Selling official sequel to How the Grinch Stole Christmas, How the Grinch Lost Christmas. Alastair is also a husband and father and lives here in Kansas City. Meet Alastair Heim My name is Alastair Heim and I write children's picture books. I live in Kansas City with my awesomely, awesome family who inspires me everyday. Laughter is my favorite sound, purple is my favorite color, and other-people-cooking-for-me is my favorite food. I am a huge fan of music and have been known to play the guitar with impeccable mediocrity. I started writing picture books because of my kids - plain and simple. After experiencing the joy, laughter and wondrous awe picture books brought them (and still continue to), I thought that there would be nothing cooler than to see that same reaction come from one of Daddy's stories. And boy, was I right. I'm grateful, everyday, for getting to write these books and hope that, at the very least, one of mine puts a smile on your kid's faces, too. Take care of those pearly whites! Until children are about 9 years old, they'll need help from an adult while brushing and flossing their teeth. Try things like letting them pick their toothbrush, singing a tooth-brushing song or using a sticker chart to make brushing their teeth fun. Children's Mercy Kansas City is built for kids. Have you been feeling overwhelmed with balancing the desire to stay informed with functioning as a mom? The beginning of this year has brought changes in government and systems that go against the norms and laws that we have trusted no matter which political party is in power. Plus recent tragedies, including the first major commercial airline crash on U.S. soil since 2009, has likely added to fear and uncertainty for many. We are hearing from moms who aren't sure how to regulate themselves on a daily basis along with the everyday challenges of being a mom. We talked with licensed therapist Elizabeth Kaufman about these very normal feelings and how to support a friend who might feel differently. She offers practical short and long term strategies to regulate when we feel out of control, and ways to remain engaged with the world while still being an effective parent, friend, partner and employee. Elizabeth Kaufman, LCMFT, is a clinically licensed mental health therapist and the owner of Elizabeth Kaufman Therapy. She works with couples and individuals to go below the surface of day-to-day survival mode and create new patterns for their lives. Elizabeth specializes in anxiety and identity work, guiding clients to heal from unhelpful messages and wounds and live according to their values. In addition to practicing therapy, Elizabeth is an adjunct professor for a local graduate therapy program and a Kansas Behavioral Sciences Board-approved supervisor for therapists seeking clinical licensure. Happy New Year! A lot of you may be thinking about resolutions or things you want to change in the coming year. We discuss the mental load of moms and how that impacts our fashion, how what we wear influences mindset and energy, favorite stores, and practical steps we can take to feel better about ourselves in what we wear. Katie established Intentionally Chic to offer expertise to empower women, especiallymothers to rediscover their identity through style. When her third child was still a baby, she relocated to a new state and leave behind a teaching career she adored. Despite being told she was too expensive to be hired due to my experience in the new state, I had to reinvent myself while caring for three young children. Before her interview at Stitch Fix, she looked into her closet and felt lost. She realized she needed to discover her authentic style. Katie put in the effort and walked into that interview brimming with confidence. While at Stitch Fix, she saw her journey mirrored in the stories of countless women. Our interview with Alyssa Hodges, who you may remember from our episode on divorce, talks about everything moms need to know, including why Taylor Swift needs a trust not a will! Alyssa wrote an article for us on estate planning. She writes, "We teach our kids to look both ways when crossing the street and to wash their hands (stomach flu fear lives #RentFree in my head). We teach them not to talk to strangers and to be aware of their surroundings. We worry about the immediate dangers. But we have to cover the long-term dangers, too." Meet Alyssa Hodges Alyssa Hodges is a KC-based family law and divorce attorney. She earned her law degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law and is pursuing a master's in tax law at Washington University St. Louis School of Law. Ms. Hodges enjoys preparing for trial and being in the courtroom. This podcast is sponsored by University Health. Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women. Much of this is due to a long history of systemic racism and bias. Studies show that when Black women suffer from severe injuries or pregnancy complications or simply ask for assistance, they are often dismissed or ignored in the health care settings that are designed to care for them. Today we talk with Dr. Traci Johnson and Dr. Tiffany Ruffin from University Health about their efforts to improve these outcomes. Through their program, EleVATE, University Health offers group prenatal care, mental health services, and education for moms-to-be — an initiative that is not only empowering moms but leading to better outcomes.
