Kristen Jenson at defendyoungminds.com wrote an article entitled, Today's Porn Industry: Five Things Every Parent Needs to Know. Parents, as you engage in continued conversations with your kids about the dangers and sinful nature of this horribly broken and addicting expression of God's good gift of sexuality, keep in mind these warnings from Jenson. First, the porn industry is complicit with the sex trafficking of minors, rape, and pedophilia. Porn has become synonymous with sex crimes. Second, the pornography industry makes hard-core pornography available for free. If it doesn't find your kids, your kids will find it. Third, pornography normalizes incest, racism, and violence to women. Fourth, the porn industry is a mainstream big corporate business. Yes, computer scientists, lawyers accountants, and HR execs are all a part of the scheme. And finally, the porn industry is doing all they can to deny the truth, to disinform, and to defame their critics. Parents, protect your kids from pornography.

Get the show notes here: https://lauriechristine.com/how-to-talk-to-your-kids-about-pornography/Pornography. It's not a fun topic to discuss, but it's a very important conversation to have with our boys. (And not just an isolated discussion, but an ongoing conversation!)The average age that kids are exposed to pornography is between the ages of 8-10. It's literally everywhere. Especially when younger and younger kids have unlimited access to cell phones, ipads, and other devices. Even if you've been super careful to limit your child's internet access, chances are they have a friend at school, on the bus, in the neighborhood and yes, even at church, who might expose them to pornography. Pornography is a world-wide pandemic that has been normalized by our society. I don't think many Christians truly realize the danger of pornography. This is a quote that I found from an article on NPR that I think describes this pandemic very well: “Imagine a drug so powerful it can destroy a family simply by distorting a man's perception of his wife. Picture an addiction so lethal it has the potential to render an entire generation incapable of forming lasting marriages and so widespread that it produces more annual revenue … than all of the leading technology companies combined.”So, what can we do about this drug that is destroying the very foundation of our society? How can we protect our children and teach them to value God's design for marriage? We have a special guest on the show to help us answer these questions. Kristen Jenson is the founder of Defend Young Minds and the #1 bestselling author of Good Pictures Bad Pictures, a read-aloud book to teach young children how to reject pornography. Her trusted resources and content, including the Brain Defense Digital Safety curriculum, have helped millions all over the world to defend children from all forms of sexual exploitation.

As parents, we spend a lot of time and energy ensuring that our kids are safe in their physical spaces. We put up safeguards around hour homes. We go to great lengths to live in a safe neighborhood and send our kids to a safe school.   But what about our kid's digital spaces?   The threats for our children are as significant in cyberspace as they are in their physical space.   Catherine welcomes back Kristen Jensen, founder of Defend Young Minds, to discuss the threats our children face in cyberspace and how to protect them. Defend Young Minds creates powerful resources to protect children online   Our culture says that our children deserve privacy online, but no child deserves to face these threats alone. We may think that our child is just upstairs playing a video game, but there are dangers in digital spaces. You wouldn't drop your child off in Central Park and say, “Have fun! I'll see you in a few hours…” And yet we often leave our kids vulnerable to dangerous influences from around the world when we hand them an unprotected, unmonitored device.   Some digital dangers that can ensnare kids include: Pornography Sexting Cyberbullying Sextortion Trafficking   Tackling all the technology surrounding our kids may seem like an insurmountable task, but while our kids may have more tech savvy, we have wisdom. And we must use it to protect our kids.   About the Guest: Kristen A. Few conversations make parents fill more ill-equipped and tongue-tied than discussing the topic of pornography with our kids. How do we even broach the subject?   Catherine's guest has created a book series that does all of the hard work for us. Kristen Jensen is the #1 best-selling author of the Good Pictures Bad Pictures series of read-aloud books, which have been translated into 10 languages. These books define pornography and warn against the threats, and then they provide parents and kids with a game plan to defend young minds against the dangers.   In this episode, Kristen walks parents through the Defend Young Minds triple defense plan for parents:   Get the facts. Arm your kids. Continue the conversation   As parents, we must give our kids the proper vocabulary to discuss this threat while explaining the dangers lurking behind enticing pictures and videos. And we need to empower our children to resist the temptation.   Pornography isn't your child's fault, but it is their problem. No child deserves to face the porn industry alone. They need to be educated and they need to have a strategy for the moment when they encounter pornography.    About the author Kristen A. This week on the Exodus Cry Podcast, we are joined by Defend Young Minds founder Kristen Jenson to discuss protecting children from porn in the digital age. Kristen is the acclaimed author of Good Pictures Bad Pictures, a digital safety expert, and the CEO of Glen Cove Press. In 2011, Kristen found out her friend's oldest son had sexually abused their younger children using pornography. Distraught, Kristen felt compelled to search online for resources to warn her friend's younger children about the dangers of viewing pornography but could not find anything. She set out to create resources for parents to address pornography exposure and consumption. As she began researching and talking to parents, she realized the need was even greater. Kristen began blogging about all she was learning, and it was out of this that Defend Young Minds was born. Why Girls Engage with Pornography

The folks at Defend Young Minds have released a list of the three top reasons why more our girls are seeking out and engaging with pornography. To know the reasons is to know how to push back on this trend. First, our girls are feeling a growing pressure from boys to watch pornography. Girls are feeling compelled to conform to these expectations. We must respond by helping them understand the immoral nature of these expectations, along with encouraging them to feel the freedom to come and talk to us when they encounter the expectations. Second, may girls accidentally discover pornography, many times through social media feeds and chat groups. Borders and boundaries are needed, along with parental oversight, and again, the encouragement to talk openly with us as parents. Finally, they go to pornography out of curiosity. Parents, remember that your child's sex education needs to be rooted in Scripture, along with what you are teaching them in the home.

There's something about just hearing the word pedophile that makes the hair stand up on the back of our necks. We wonder how there can be people out there who actually take the time to carefully approach and groom kids into situations where they sexually assault and exploit innocent and unsuspecting children. The folks at Defend Young Minds are now warning parents to be aware of the many places and ways that predators engage our kids in the world of gaming apps. Specifically, these predators are using the chat features in a variety of games, including Roblox, Minecraft, and Fortnite, which are all games played by a younger crowd. After the initial grooming takes place, the predators then move the conversations to different messaging apps, thereby keeping parents out of the loop. Parents, you need to know that where kids play, predators are playing as well. Talk to your kids about the dangers, monitor their online time, and be sure to use parental controls.

We seek after wisdom, and we believe wisdom is the highest possible form of knowledge. Brittany Homer from the Raising Today's Kids podcast and Project Stand. “I remember when I was young, realizing the importance of giving children a good foundation, how if they are given a good foundation in their life, then there is no limit to their potential.” – Brittany Homer “Anytime you try to change the economy of God, you're doing it wrong.” – Haitian guide as remembered by Brittany Homer “In order to help children be successful, in order to help them reach their potential, parents have to do their job, and parents have to know how to do their job, and parents have to feel empowered.” – Brittany Homer “If I'm going to prevent human trafficking, I've got to address pornography exposure and help people prevent that or address that.” – Brittany Homer “We felt like, in order to keep kids safe from all of these forms of sexual exploitation that are out there, we've got to help them be safe online.” – Brittany Homer “Really the most important factor is that parent-child relationship.” – Brittany Homer Some organizations that Brittany mentioned include the National Center on Sexual Exploitation, Fight the New Drug, White Ribbon Week, Defend Young Minds, The Coalition to End Sexual Exploitation, the Utah Coalition Against Pornography, Utah PTA Digital Wellness Committee, and Safeguard Alliance. “I love how we are all in the business of trying to help children and strengthen families.” – Brittany Homer “I feel like God is at the core of everything that I do, and so I find a lot of strength in Him, and I feel like sometimes He guides me to spend some time learning, and sometimes He guides me to just slow down and focus on the people.” – Brittany Homer “Too much screen time can be related to sleep. Problems, aggression, desensitization, nightmares, fear, impulsivity, depression, low self-esteem, anxiety, low attention span. I mean, there's so, so many negative things that are associated with too much screen time.” – Brittany Homer “The more time someone uses social media, the more likely they are to be depressed. Social media increases the risk of bullying, clique forming, sexual experimentation. It leads to privacy issues, Internet addiction, sleep deprivation, anxiety, depression.” – Brittany Homer “Cyberbullying – One in four children has experienced cyberbullying, and cyberbullying victims are two times more likely to commit suicide.” – Brittany Homer “This statistic blew my mind: 27% of all video content online is pornographic.” – Brittany Homer “I'm very hopeful, because I know that children can be resilient.” – Brittany Homer “I believe that an educated parent can just be so powerful in the lives of their kids and protecting them.” – Brittany Homer “I'm just so glad that you followed up those statistics with hope and that idea that if we can teach them to use their screen time wisely, then there's nothing that they can't do. I think that's really encouraging and exciting. It puts a lot of pressure on us parents, but it's exciting. We can become educated.” – Dana Robb Healthy Technology Path “Take ‘Just a SEC' – Stop, Evaluate, Choose – whenever you're going to post or search or share something online.” – Brittany Homer “I love your approach to questions. It's not accusatory. It's not assuming that they're doing something bad or dumb, and you're allowing them to collaborate with you and to share their inner selves. And I love the section where you focus on values and helping them discover their own. I think, as parents so many times we assume that we're going to instill in them our values and what's important to us is going to be important to them, but it's so much more powerful to discover where they're at and help them decide on their values, and there's such a range of good values out there. We don't have to have all the same things.” – Dana Robb “Parents are the most important protective factor, and you are qualified to be the parent of your children. And not only are you qualified, but you're qualified today right now.” – Brittany Homer “Wisdom is achieved by uniting our internal compass or conscience with our life experiences.” – Dana Robb   Brittany has always believed that with the right tools and support there is no limit to a child's potential. She has a master's degree in Family and Human Development, is a Certified Family Life Educator, and is creator and host of the podcast, Raising Today's Kids where she shares her deep belief in the power of parents. Brittany has also served as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), Sexual Assault (SANE) Advocate, and is actively involved in the Safeguard Alliance (a task force of the National Center on Sexual Exploitation). Brittany has a bucket list the length of Montana. She would love to experience every adventure from learning to yodel, to running an ultra-marathon, to seeing the northern lights from a hot spring. She loves to travel and integrate with the locals wherever she goes and has had life-changing conversations in cultures from Israel to Haiti. The experience that trumps all others though, is that of being a mother. She and her husband feel so blessed to have four children who inspire her to fight to protect all children.

Talking to your kids about online safety, needs to be as normal as teaching them to safely cross the street. I know we would rather not talk about pornography but the reality is, that every child with a device connected to the internet, is a portal to porn. If you don't talk to your kids, they will be all alone when they come across porn, (not if, when) and not know how to process what they've seen, or have the language for it. Thankfully there are people like my guest, Kristen Jeson who is the founder of Defend Young Minds.com. I love talking to Kristen, but I also hate that I have to. What should we tell our kids about pornography? In a recent article on the Defend Young Minds website, Gabe Deem listed the three things he wants to teach his kids about porn. Gabe was first exposed to porn at age eight. By age twenty-three he reached a point where he was addicted to and dependent on pornography in ways that I will not mention here. He is committed to teaching his son these three things about what pornography does to us. First, pornography can harm you physically. He goes on to offer evidence regarding pornography's negative effects on both the brain structure and the body. Second, pornography can harm you mentally. When he finally broke free from his addiction, Deem says he experienced a variety of benefits, including improved concentration and memory. And third, pornography can harm you emotionally, including leading to depression. Parents, God is the creator of his good gift of sexuality. But God's enemy wants to undo it all, and porn is one way he does it.

Welcome to episode #112!In this episode, Matt and Braden talk to the author of Good Pictures Bad Pictures and founder of Defend Young Minds, Kristen Jenson about how to talk to our children about porn in age appropriate ways. What do I tell my children about porn?Kristen has a three-step outline to help you know how to talk to your young children about porn. Definition Warning Plan Defining porn helps kids recognize porn in all of the diverse ways that porn is produced (cartoon, real life, anime, inappropriate visuals with clothes on, etc).Warning kids about the dangers of porn and why to turn away is crucial because if they don't know what harms they can incur from pornography, the enticement of it will take over and they'll find ways to search it out. When kids have a plan in place that they've communicated with an adult beforehand, it helps them know exactly what to do when they see porn. Having a plan eliminates room for shame because it gets things in the open and the child feels great that he/she did the right thing. When should I talk to my children about porn?Talking about porn is always done in an age appropriate way. Kristen has multiple resources and book on how to talk to our kids about sex and our bodies in the preschool years. As adults, we understand to a greater degree what pornography is, but we aren't going to tell our young kids information they can't handle. We have to start young, but always by doing it in an age appropriate way. Being proactive will set our kids up for success! How to protect your child with devicesYour child needs an internal filter. Talking to them with open communication with some regularity is going to be the best way to protect your children from porn. This will establish a warm bond, which is crucial in order for them to be open with you. When you're talking about devices, let them use your device. Don't give them their own. If it's their own, they have control, but if it's yours, you can set passwords and check on it at any time. When giving them access to a device, here are three things to consider: Establish guidelines Monitor the child Have consequences or give rewards based on their choices Share this with your friendsWho do you know that can benefit from this podcast and other episodes coming in the future? My guest this week is Kristen Jenson In this episode, Kristen and I discuss a sensitive but really important topic of pornography, as it relates to our children's safety and wellness. As the amount of screentime has dramatically increased across all ages over the last few years, exposure to pornography is pretty common. Uncomfortable or difficult as it may be to talk about pornography with your children, it's our responsibility as parents to set aside our own discomfort around the topic, so that we can be an accurate and healthy source of information and be a support for them. Kristen and I discuss all aspects of the inevitable exposure to pornography, inappropriate images and videos, and digital safety. We talk about the common questions of, “How do I address this with my child?”, “When do I address it?”,  “How to keep my child as safe as possible?”, and so much more.  Kristen Jenson is the founder of Defend Young Minds, and a number one best selling author of the Good Pictures, Bad Pictures, a series of read aloud books. Defend Young Minds is an organization committed to helping parents and other caring adults give young children the information, skills, and mindsets they need to defend themselves against pornography and sexual exploitation. In a recent online call to action, Defend Young Minds reminded parents that during 2022, they must be especially vigilant in this task as exposure to pornography is, as they say, always just two clicks away. Parents are reminded that in today's world, pornography is actually educational, as what our kids see will misshape their beliefs and their behaviors about sexuality. Without going into detail, Defend Young Minds describes how violent pornography becomes normalized for our kids, which then results in kids mimicking and even expecting what they see online. Parents, keep the smartphones out of the hands of your young kids. And teach them that porn is a fallen expression of God's good and glorious gift of their sexuality.
