This month I am doing a series on a series on Parenting in the Digital Age and Taking Steps to Protect Our Kids from Porn. This is the second part of my two-part interview with Chris McKenna. Chris is the founder of the amazing organization Protect Young Eyes. In this episode we are talking about an idea that Chris often shares with parents: delay is the way! Here is some more of our conversation: *No parent ever says “I've failed as a parent because I gave my kid snapchat too late.” *Chris shares this quote from Dr. Mitchell Princstein, chief science officer of the American Psychological Association, “there are no findings showing harm to children who stay off of social media, in fact, some emerging evidence suggests that the most socially competent kids are refraining from using these platforms.” *Chris suggests waiting until high school for a smart phone. *I suggest waiting until after high school for social media. *“May we raise kids who don't have to recover from their childhood.” Pam Leo *Chris shares tips for parenting in the digital age with our littles, middles and teens. *For littles: Get a router that will help prevent early accidental exposure. The router is your guard! Use it! Everything you need to know about routers from Chis found here. *For middles: Build that relational connection Have conversations that assure them no matter what happens they can land softly and safely with you! *Use parental control software on all devices (learn more about those here) *Give them a plan for what to do if they see pornography or other problematic things in the digital space. More on that in episode 8! *For teens: Keep talking! Almost annoy your kids with the frequency of these convos! Where to find more help from Chris? Website here Don't forget to subscribe to this podcast and I'd be so very grateful if you leave a 5 star rating of the podcast and write a quick review. Reviews are incredibly helpful to me as a new podcaster. Thank you for listening and being part of my team. I love you guys! Greta
This month I am doing a series on Parenting in the Digital Age and Taking Steps to Protect Our Kids from Porn. I kick of the series with a two-part interview with one of my personal heroes, Chris McKenna. Chris is the founder of the amazing organization Protect Young Eyes, whose mission is to show families, schools, and churches how to create safe digital spaces. In this episode, Chris and I talk about: *the quiet that is missing from the lives of children today. *the need to parent with empathy and compassion. *that it's tough to raise kids right now, and it's hard to be a kid right now. *our kids need to know we are on their team in this digital journey. *where digital trust is high, digital friction is low. *we need to stay calm when we're talking to our kid about porn *we need to stay calm when we're talking to them after they've seen porn. *we need to respond like Jesus, with grace and truth. (John 1:7) *the truth that porn is bad for them and that we must protect them and the grace for their mistake. *a child needs to know 2 things after he's made a mistake: am I going to be OK and are you still OK with me? *parents have to do their own work in preparation for these moments. This is part of parenting in the digital age. *read the blog post where I talk to my daughter about the inappropriate half time show here. Be sure to come back for part two next week! Don't forget to like and subscribe to this podcast, and I'd be so very grateful if you leave a review of the podcast on iTunes. Reviews are incredibly helpful to me as a new podcaster. In part-two of our time with Chris McKenna, of Protect Young Eyes, we're sharing about the top five social media apps as we head into the end of 2023. This is a highly valuable episode, as it walks parents through what these social media apps are, how they work, and things to be aware of in evaluating whether or not parents should allow their children to use them. THIS MONTH'S PRAYER GUIDE: Praying God's Word for Your Child to Have Wisdom Should you get your child a device for Christmas? Allow them to have the latest social media apps? Our children are guinea pigs in many ways. They are living a life we never lived, or at least living it in a way we never had access to because of social media and cell phones. Research is just now coming out about the impact of social media and cell phone usage on our children, especially post-pandemic, when our children were most likely on their devices more than any of us were thrilled about. This episode is the first of a 2-part interview with Chris McKenna, of Protect Young Eyes, about the impact of social media on our children. In it, we tackle questions like: What's the updated research on how social media is affecting our kids? Specifically post-pandemic? What are some general principles for parents who are talking to their kids about social media? How should they approach their kids? What's important for parents to know about their children, and about how social media works? Don't miss this important episode friends. It sets the tone for part two, airing next week, where Chris leads us through a deep dive on the top five social media apps...what they are and how they work. Tune in now! Welcome to the Love Where You Are podcast! I am joined with Chris McKenna. Chris is the founder of Protect Young Eyes. Protect Young Eyes is a nonprofit that goes around the country educating schools, churches, and other nonprofits on the dangers of the digital age's impact on children. They are also a movement, aiming to empower parents that “delay is the way” and schools should be phone free zones. Growing up was already difficult but adding social media on top of it, and it is no surprise our teens are battling insecurity, anxiety, depression, confusion, and addictions. As parents, we have to approach these delicate situations with empathy and curiosity, not criticism. It is not us versus them, it is us helping build and lift them up. Chris and I talk about ways we can do that and its never too late to get started. Thank you for being here today. Now, let's dive into the conversation! You can connect with Chris and Protect Your Eyes through Instagram and their website. FAVORITE TAKE-AWAYS: *We want to train our kids to be thinkers, not followers. On social media, it's a lot of following and keeping up with the trends. *We can try to censor the world as much as possible for our kids but it won't make a difference if they can't become filters themselves. Once they are out of our protective care, how will they protect themselves? We have to teach them why it is so important and give them the tools to do it. *Best time to plant a tree was ten years ago. The second best time is this afternoon. If you feel like you're too late, you aren't. There is still hope and you can still take charge of your household and protect your child. REMEMBER: *There is a difference between reacting and responding. As parents, we need to respond not react. *The teenage years of development have high levels of social sensitivity. These are also critical years for brain development that leads into their adulthood. *We should be building bridges of trust with our kids and not shy away from the awkward conversations. "I believe in the sanctity of childhood." That's something that Chris says in today's episode and I know each of us can stand behind that. Parenting in the Digital Age may be one of the hardest tasks we are up against with raising our children. "We have children with children's brains, children's development and we put them inside a space that was made for adults and then we get upset when they act like children. "...These spaces were not designed for them in the first place, they are by nature exploitative. They are not protective. We have to hunt for protection. And that's the part that's so difficult and maddening. I want us to embrace what can be so good about technology, but never trust it for a minute. Never turn your back on it.” ~Chris McKenna, Founder and CEO Protect Young Eyes. Let's get connected AND protected with Chris's guidance today. There's a really good chance your child has asked you to get them a smartphone. My first conversation was with my oldest child when he was in kindergarten. His classmate had one and used it to play games during the school day. Whatever age you child, this conversation is fraught with big emotions, a predictable “but everyone else has one” argument, and the difficulty as a parent of threading the needle between being intentional and being out of touch with reality. It's not easy, and today's conversation will walk through the research and practice that will help inform our decisions, as well as practical steps we can take to help get our children on the road to eventual (if delayed) digital independence.Resources:Addiction By Design: Machine Gambling In Las Vegas. Does keeping your kids safe on the internet ever feel like a game of Whack-a-mole - frenzied and unending, always trying to fend off the threats that pop up? Or maybe you've been afraid your kids would be or feel left out if you had more limits on their screens? You've seen the documentaries and the research of how addictive social media can be and the average age in which kids are exposed to pornography keeps going down and yet, we know on some level what we forbid our kids to do has the potential to become the only thing they want. Families around you probably have a wide range of tech norms in their households. Kids relentlessly request screen time. Honestly, sometimes we long for the quiet of a kid mesmerized by a screen. What's a mom to do? Enter this week's guest, Chris McKenna, dad of four and founder of Protect Young Eyes, an organization devoted to helping parents create safe digital spaces for their kids. Chris encourages us that while there are real things our kids need protecting from on the internet, there are real ways we can foster digital trust and create safe digital spaces for our kids. Chris helps us understand that rather than a controller, our kids want a coach - someone to teach them how to use technology in ways that honor God, themselves, and others.
