Few conversations make parents fill more ill-equipped and tongue-tied than discussing the topic of pornography with our kids. How do we even broach the subject? Catherine's guest has created a book series that does all of the hard work for us. Kristen Jensen is the #1 best-selling author of the Good Pictures Bad Pictures series of read-aloud books, which have been translated into 10 languages. These books define pornography and warn against the threats, and then they provide parents and kids with a game plan to defend young minds against the dangers. In this episode, Kristen walks parents through the Defend Young Minds triple defense plan for parents: Get the facts. Arm your kids. Continue the conversation As parents, we must give our kids the proper vocabulary to discuss this threat while explaining the dangers lurking behind enticing pictures and videos. And we need to empower our children to resist the temptation. Pornography isn't your child's fault, but it is their problem. No child deserves to face the porn industry alone. They need to be educated and they need to have a strategy for the moment when they encounter pornography. About the author Kristen A. Jenson, MA is the founder of Defend Young Minds and #1 best-selling author of the Good Pictures Bad Pictures series of read-aloud books which have translations in 10 languages. Today's episode is about our kid's access to pornography. Kids are getting access to porn earlier and earlier. I wondered, how is the early access to today's boundary-pushing pornography affecting them? So I brought in Kristen A. Jenson of Defend Young Minds. Kristen advises parents when and how to have the conversation about pornography with our kids. One thing I learned -- we cannot let the internet teach our kids about sex and porn. The risks are too great. Here's a topic that has not been covered on this show, but I want to cover it because it's not only important to the health of our own minds, but to the world around us.The amounts spent on pornography in just the United States is staggering, and no one is immune from the risk. It's more accessible than ever before; and the barriers of shame that once existed have been lifted. Perhaps the most vulnerable to the dangers of porn are the children, who simply have not developed morally to even understand what addiction is, let alone take action once it has occurred.Kristen Jenson has provided an incredibly valuable service with two easy to read books that describe the nature of porn, how to recognize it, and how to make a plan of action on how to avoid its destructive nature and enjoy sex as we were created to!Here's a bit of what you'll hear in today's episode:-Porn is all too often the #1 perpetrator of molestation among youth...06:00-Definition, warning, plan: ways we can teach children to reject pornography...10:00-How to know if your child might be exposed to porn...16:30-The physical and spiritual repercussions of children and adults being exposed to porn...24:00-Challenges parents face when confronting the porn issue with their kids...32:38-We implore you to take matters into your own hands when it comes to porn...37:30-Rejecting porn alerts young people to rejecting potential sexual abuse...39:30-And more...Resources mentioned:Defend Young MindsGood Pictures, Bad PicturesConnect with today's guest!Kristen A. Does keeping your kids safe on the internet ever feel like a game of Whack-a-mole - frenzied and unending, always trying to fend off the threats that pop up? Or maybe you've been afraid your kids would be or feel left out if you had more limits on their screens? You've seen the documentaries and the research of how addictive social media can be and the average age in which kids are exposed to pornography keeps going down and yet, we know on some level what we forbid our kids to do has the potential to become the only thing they want. Families around you probably have a wide range of tech norms in their households. Kids relentlessly request screen time. Honestly, sometimes we long for the quiet of a kid mesmerized by a screen. What's a mom to do? Enter this week's guest, Chris McKenna, dad of four and founder of Protect Young Eyes, an organization devoted to helping parents create safe digital spaces for their kids. Chris encourages us that while there are real things our kids need protecting from on the internet, there are real ways we can foster digital trust and create safe digital spaces for our kids. Chris helps us understand that rather than a controller, our kids want a coach - someone to teach them how to use technology in ways that honor God, themselves, and others. Tracy and Rachel celebrate the Season 4 finale of Isn't it Lovely? by welcoming Sioux Falls Christian Elementary School Principal Dr. Kym Johnston to the podcast! A daughter and granddaughter of educators, Kym reflects on a passion for education that dates back to playing school as a little girl, reveals how the belief of a leader inspired her dream and goal of becoming a principal, and offers encouragement to those walking through seasons of discomfort and growth. Tracy and Kym discuss the double-edged sword of increased technology in the classroom and how to utilize it to better enhance, yet not replace, instruction, while Rachel marvels at Kym's ability to greet every student (and their siblings) by name in below-zero temperatures at morning drop-off while looking like a million dollars. Kym models ways to demonstrate to your professional team that you trust and care about them and reminds us that all children seek to feel safe and loved. Tracy and Rachel request advice for helping children embrace imagination and empathy, while also learning the finer points of South Dakota's geography, despite combined decades of living in the Mount Rushmore State. Kristen is the founder of Protect Young Minds Org and the author of Good Pictures Bad Pictures and Good Pictures Bad Pictures Jr. Today, we’re going to be discussing the incredibly important topic of porn-proofing your kids. It’s truly stunning and deeply distressing to know how many children are confronted with images they don’t want to see every single day, and as parents we need to protect them but also to equip them to know what to do if they do encounter something they know they shouldn’t look at. Kristen’s resources give parents a Can Do plan to share with their kiddos, and I’m really excited to let you hear from her today. Additional Information: Kristen A. Jenson is the author of the Good Pictures Bad Pictures series of read-aloud books, powerful resources to help children reject pornography and sexual abuse. The 5-point CAN DO Plan™ teaches kids how to avoid the brain-warping images of pornography and minimize the troubling memories of accidental exposure that can lead them into a dark and destructive addiction. To stay safe in the digital age, kids must install an internal filter in their own brain. Good Pictures Bad Pictures shows them how. Special thanks to this week's sponsor, Alpha Omega Publications. Porn is a billion dollar industry and a national epidemic that aims to turn your children into addicts. If the porn industry can get your kids addicted while they are young, they know they will grow into porn-addicted adults, and thus make money off of them for years to come. On Episode 110, Daniel and Christina interview Rosie Makinney about practical tools parents can take to porn-proof your kids. We discuss what signs to look for to know if your child is watching porn and how you can support a child who is struggling with a porn addiction. In This Episode, You Will Hear About: Why porn is so addictive for children and teens 4 steps to help porn-proof your children Signs to look for to know if your child is watching porn How you can support your child if they are struggling with a porn addiction Incredible age-appropriate resources to help you continue this important conversation with your kids and teens Resources Mentioned During the Episode: Listen to our previous episode with Rosie, My Spouse Is Addicted To Porn Rosie Makinney's Fight For Love Ministries and Fight For Love Podcast Fight For Love: How To Take Your Marriage Back From Porn by Rosie Makinney Media Savvy Moms Podcast Parents Aware.info Fight The New Drug Fortify: Science Based Support For Lasting Change (program for ages 13 to 17 years old) Your Brain On Porn Protect Young Minds.org Culture Reframed.org How To Talk To Your Kids About Porn (Interview With Simon Sheh) Protect Young Eyes.com Good Pictures Bad Pictures Jr: A Simple Plan to Protect Young Minds by Kristen A. Pretending that everything is fine will backfire. @RosieMakinney Average age of first exposure to porn is eleven. Other studies say the figure is closer to eight. @RosieMakinney My top piece of tech advice to parents is to ensure that you restrict your child's ability to download apps onto their phone without your knowledge. You need to keep on top of what black holes your child has access to. @RosieMakinney Porn-proofing your kids does not happen in a single conversation. It is an on-going dialogue.@RosieMakinney Even when your kids' dumb decisions trigger you, don't forget to take a few deep breaths before responding. Your goal here is to keep the channels open. This is an episode that EVERY parent needs to listen to. Pornography is simply, picture poison and is a health crisis we can’t ignore. Any child with a device has access to porn. By the age of 12, it’s extremely rare for a child not to have seen a pornographic image according to my guest and author, Kristen Jenson. There are SO MANY reasons why you NEED to teach your children to reject porn. Did you know that Porn has a special grip on us because we are naturally wired to be interested and curious? It's a biological reality and when young children see it, it sexualizes our children pre-maturely. Ignoring this issue or thinking your child won’t be affected, doesn't prevent your child from seeing it. If you haven’t had a conversation with your kids, when they see it, they’ll be caught off guard and don't know what to do! Open up a dialogue with your kids before now or before they see it. The benefits of good porn refusal techniques can keep you kids safe from sexual predators because they use pornography to groom children and desensitize/normalize it so it’s easier to abuse the child. Listen in as Kristen talks about how we need to give kids a definition for what pornography is, then we give them a warning and a plan of action. Listen to Kristen’s plan for young kids with "Turn, Run Tell" and older kids “Can DO”. About Kristen Jenson: Kristen A. Her latest honor is becoming a grandma! She lives with her husband and sassy chocolate Schnoodle puppy in the beautiful state of Washington. Kristen earned a B.A. in English Literature and an M.A. in Organizational Communication. This is a difficult topic to discuss, but I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to talk about. Kristen tells us that porn is predatory. Kids do not have to look for it, it is looking for them. It will find them. The discussion needs to be centered around what our kids can do when porn finds them. Kristen offers several resources on her site to help parents with this topic, with media literacy, and creating a plan to help our families navigate this over-sexualized culture. Help children understand three things: what pornography is teach our children that pornography is dangerous have a plan for what to do when they see pornography Learn why filters are good for our devices, but more than that, we need to help our children develop internal filters. We need to be the ones talking to our children about pornography and sex so that we become the authority. They don't want to be the ones who don't understand when their peers refer to these things, so they are going to seek out this information. Parents need to be the authority and give their children permission to talk to them about these things. Protect Young Minds has amazing resources to help parents learn how to become their child's mentor to talk through difficult topics, and talk out big emotions. Parents can become the safety for kids who need to understand, and navigate their development into adulthood. As Kristen says, put on our big girl/big boy pants and talk about this stuff. Note: around timestamp 30:55 is a trigger story. I left it to illustrate why children need to know all human anatomy, not just their own, and they need to know proper names of the body parts. With the prevalence of explicit content online, parents must take active steps to protect children from pornography. Parents must create safe boundaries, foster honest conversation, and work to develop good character in their kids. Kristen A. Jenson is an author and speaker who is committed to informing parents about how pornographic content threatens children today. She is the author of Good Pictures Bad Pictures: Porn-Proofing Today's Young Kids, a bestseller designed to help parents explain the dangers of pornography to their kids. Kristen also founded ProtectYoungMinds.org, an online resource designed to equip parents with tools and strategies to protect their children from pornography. Kristen frequently speaks about these issues as a guest at various events and on radio programs and podcasts. Kristen is also a parent, and she lives in Washington State with her husband. How to Begin to Protect Children from Pornography Though Honesty and Good Character Last week, Kristen A. Jenson and I started a conversation about the dangers of pornography. This week, we continue discussing this topic. As Kristen mentioned in part-one, the availability of pornographic content online is one of the major factors that leads to exposure or addiction to pornography. Parents must not be ignorant about this fact or naively believe their that children are going to be the exceptions when it comes to discovering pornography online. There are plenty of steps parents can take to protect their kids online, but even after preventative measures have been taken, kids can still be exposed to overly sexual content. Young people are not only barraged by the temptation of instant pornographic content online, but also the sexual themes and images on television and advertisements. As with any other addictions, accessibility often triggers cravings for addicts. So, on top of making wise decisions about Internet accessibility in the home, parents must also be honest about sex, love, lust, and pornography with their children, and guide their young sons and daughters away from lust and objectification and toward love and empathy. Kristen A. Jenson and I continue to discuss how to protect children from pornography as we cover the following topics: One reason teens are struggling in today's digital age. The need to protect your child, and teach them self-discipline. How to address the topic of how pornography objectifies women. The problem with younger children exposed to pornography. Learn to be proactive not reactive to inform your child about the dangers of pornography. Informing your children early on helps them to trust and talk honestly with you about pornography. Even if your favorite private school allows smartphones on campus—whether it's a Christian school or not—again, the chance of your child viewing pornography dramatically increases. It has been around ever since man could draw pictures, form clay, or carve wood and stone.
