Get the show notes here: https://lauriechristine.com/how-to-talk-to-your-kids-about-pornography/Pornography. It's not a fun topic to discuss, but it's a very important conversation to have with our boys. (And not just an isolated discussion, but an ongoing conversation!)The average age that kids are exposed to pornography is between the ages of 8-10. It's literally everywhere. Especially when younger and younger kids have unlimited access to cell phones, ipads, and other devices. Even if you've been super careful to limit your child's internet access, chances are they have a friend at school, on the bus, in the neighborhood and yes, even at church, who might expose them to pornography. Pornography is a world-wide pandemic that has been normalized by our society. I don't think many Christians truly realize the danger of pornography. This is a quote that I found from an article on NPR that I think describes this pandemic very well: “Imagine a drug so powerful it can destroy a family simply by distorting a man's perception of his wife. Picture an addiction so lethal it has the potential to render an entire generation incapable of forming lasting marriages and so widespread that it produces more annual revenue … than all of the leading technology companies combined.”So, what can we do about this drug that is destroying the very foundation of our society? How can we protect our children and teach them to value God's design for marriage? We have a special guest on the show to help us answer these questions. Kristen Jenson is the founder of Defend Young Minds and the #1 bestselling author of Good Pictures Bad Pictures, a read-aloud book to teach young children how to reject pornography. Her trusted resources and content, including the Brain Defense Digital Safety curriculum, have helped millions all over the world to defend children from all forms of sexual exploitation.
As parents, we spend a lot of time and energy ensuring that our kids are safe in their physical spaces. We put up safeguards around hour homes. We go to great lengths to live in a safe neighborhood and send our kids to a safe school. But what about our kid's digital spaces? The threats for our children are as significant in cyberspace as they are in their physical space. Catherine welcomes back Kristen Jensen, founder of Defend Young Minds, to discuss the threats our children face in cyberspace and how to protect them. Defend Young Minds creates powerful resources to protect children online Our culture says that our children deserve privacy online, but no child deserves to face these threats alone. We may think that our child is just upstairs playing a video game, but there are dangers in digital spaces. You wouldn't drop your child off in Central Park and say, “Have fun! I'll see you in a few hours…” And yet we often leave our kids vulnerable to dangerous influences from around the world when we hand them an unprotected, unmonitored device. Some digital dangers that can ensnare kids include: Pornography Sexting Cyberbullying Sextortion Trafficking Tackling all the technology surrounding our kids may seem like an insurmountable task, but while our kids may have more tech savvy, we have wisdom. And we must use it to protect our kids. About the Guest: Kristen A. Few conversations make parents fill more ill-equipped and tongue-tied than discussing the topic of pornography with our kids. How do we even broach the subject? Catherine's guest has created a book series that does all of the hard work for us. Kristen Jensen is the #1 best-selling author of the Good Pictures Bad Pictures series of read-aloud books, which have been translated into 10 languages. These books define pornography and warn against the threats, and then they provide parents and kids with a game plan to defend young minds against the dangers. In this episode, Kristen walks parents through the Defend Young Minds triple defense plan for parents: Get the facts. Arm your kids. Continue the conversation As parents, we must give our kids the proper vocabulary to discuss this threat while explaining the dangers lurking behind enticing pictures and videos. And we need to empower our children to resist the temptation. Pornography isn't your child's fault, but it is their problem. No child deserves to face the porn industry alone. They need to be educated and they need to have a strategy for the moment when they encounter pornography. About the author Kristen A. This week on the Exodus Cry Podcast, we are joined by Defend Young Minds founder Kristen Jenson to discuss protecting children from porn in the digital age. Kristen is the acclaimed author of Good Pictures Bad Pictures, a digital safety expert, and the CEO of Glen Cove Press. In 2011, Kristen found out her friend's oldest son had sexually abused their younger children using pornography. Distraught, Kristen felt compelled to search online for resources to warn her friend's younger children about the dangers of viewing pornography but could not find anything. She set out to create resources for parents to address pornography exposure and consumption. As she began researching and talking to parents, she realized the need was even greater. Kristen began blogging about all she was learning, and it was out of this that Defend Young Minds was born. Here's a topic that has not been covered on this show, but I want to cover it because it's not only important to the health of our own minds, but to the world around us.The amounts spent on pornography in just the United States is staggering, and no one is immune from the risk. It's more accessible than ever before; and the barriers of shame that once existed have been lifted. Perhaps the most vulnerable to the dangers of porn are the children, who simply have not developed morally to even understand what addiction is, let alone take action once it has occurred.Kristen Jenson has provided an incredibly valuable service with two easy to read books that describe the nature of porn, how to recognize it, and how to make a plan of action on how to avoid its destructive nature and enjoy sex as we were created to!Here's a bit of what you'll hear in today's episode:-Porn is all too often the #1 perpetrator of molestation among youth...06:00-Definition, warning, plan: ways we can teach children to reject pornography...10:00-How to know if your child might be exposed to porn...16:30-The physical and spiritual repercussions of children and adults being exposed to porn...24:00-Challenges parents face when confronting the porn issue with their kids...32:38-We implore you to take matters into your own hands when it comes to porn...37:30-Rejecting porn alerts young people to rejecting potential sexual abuse...39:30-And more...Resources mentioned:Defend Young MindsGood Pictures, Bad PicturesConnect with today's guest!Kristen A. How can I help him? Patrick recommends “Legacy: A Father's Handbook for Raising Godly Children” by Stephen Wood and “Good Pictures Bad Pictures” which can be found at www.holyheroes.com Becky - Thank you for a suggestion you made on air. I disagree with you that we should not attend weddings of Catholics outside the Church. Peter - A parishioner asked me for advice for his daughter who came out as gay. What should I do? Does the Church have an opinion about “Human Composting?”

Welcome to episode #112!In this episode, Matt and Braden talk to the author of Good Pictures Bad Pictures and founder of Defend Young Minds, Kristen Jenson about how to talk to our children about porn in age appropriate ways. What do I tell my children about porn?Kristen has a three-step outline to help you know how to talk to your young children about porn. Definition Warning Plan Defining porn helps kids recognize porn in all of the diverse ways that porn is produced (cartoon, real life, anime, inappropriate visuals with clothes on, etc).Warning kids about the dangers of porn and why to turn away is crucial because if they don't know what harms they can incur from pornography, the enticement of it will take over and they'll find ways to search it out. When kids have a plan in place that they've communicated with an adult beforehand, it helps them know exactly what to do when they see porn. Having a plan eliminates room for shame because it gets things in the open and the child feels great that he/she did the right thing. When should I talk to my children about porn?Talking about porn is always done in an age appropriate way. Kristen has multiple resources and book on how to talk to our kids about sex and our bodies in the preschool years. As adults, we understand to a greater degree what pornography is, but we aren't going to tell our young kids information they can't handle. We have to start young, but always by doing it in an age appropriate way. Being proactive will set our kids up for success! How to protect your child with devicesYour child needs an internal filter. Talking to them with open communication with some regularity is going to be the best way to protect your children from porn. This will establish a warm bond, which is crucial in order for them to be open with you. When you're talking about devices, let them use your device. Don't give them their own. If it's their own, they have control, but if it's yours, you can set passwords and check on it at any time. When giving them access to a device, here are three things to consider: Establish guidelines Monitor the child Have consequences or give rewards based on their choices Share this with your friendsWho do you know that can benefit from this podcast and other episodes coming in the future? After introducing their more PG-13 subject of pornography, Greg explains some history behind how we got to where we are. RD is quick to point out that this issue affects both men and women. The two discuss how there are often only two schools of thought about pornography: It is the unforgivable sin (which leads to shame and not real conversation), or it's celebrated as providing sexual freedom. Greg is emphatic that it is not a sin to look at someone and be attracted sexually to them because God created us to be attracted to them. It becomes a sin when the thought turns to lust. RD adds that pornography is bad because it makes sex transactional and takes away the covenant partnership tied to sex. Greg brings up society's attachment to technology; he references the hikikomori in Japan and an article by Maggie Jones. RD implores listeners to have real conversations about pornography so as to bring freedom to those in its bondage. He mentions how Jesus was friends with and forgave prostitutes and those living in sin as a way to show that Jesus pursues all of us no matter what we've done.As an additional resource for kids, Greg references a book called Good Pictures Bad Pictures. RD and Greg transition into helping listeners know how to react and what to say when someone in their life confesses to them that they watch porn. Greg specifically speaks to people getting into new relationships, and how to handle when the other person says they watch porn. As they wrap up, the two reference resources available at Fellowship Church, like the counseling department.
