Episode Summary: Have you felt the pang of loneliness? Do you find yourself longing for deeper connections, for meaningful friendship? People are designed to be in community with one another, yet so many of us suffer from loneliness and isolation. Feelings of disconnect are more common than you may have realized and can have devastating consequences. My colleague, Dr. Gregory Jantz, and I want to help you with that. In this episode, we talk about how building meaningful connections can combat the effects of loneliness. Quotables from the episode: Pre-pandemic studies revealed that over 61% of the population admitted to feeling lonely. The majority of people can't name one close friend. Everything on social media is instant, and social media says we're more connected when in reality, the opposite is true. Those who are lonely tend to experience a foreshortened future with no hope. Loneliness is really disconnection and longing for relationships. Isolation and loneliness are serious problems with real and often devastating consequences. Humans are social creatures in need of connection with others. Lack of strong relationships increases premature death by 50%. When we need people the most, we tend to withdraw. Real connection means connecting with real people. It requires an investment of time, emotions, and trust. There is a high cost to loneliness including decreased immune system, physical ailments, decreased mood, increased anxiety, decreased self-esteem, and increased panic. A universal critical need is the need to feel understood. Hope comes with a plan. Scripture References: Genesis 2:18 “It is not good for the man to be alone.” Proverbs 27:9 “The heartfelt counsel of a friend is as sweet as perfume and incense.” Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.” Recommended Resources: The Power of Connection: Maximize Your Health and happiness with Close Relationships by Gregory L. So you have to be willing to do a little bit of work to receive them, and you can't do the things that make everybody, including yourself, uncomfortable or feeling desperate." "It takes two things for a referral to happen: desire and opportunity." "When we can impact how our referral sources feel about us, and how I want them to feel about me or feel about you… we then earn the opportunity to direct how they think." "When you give a referral, your reputation goes with it every single time, and if the referral goes wrong, it is on you to help make it right." Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States, and its rate increased by 33 percent between 1999 and 2019. Yet that statistic doesn't include the number of Americans who thought about or attempted suicide: according to Mental Health America, more than 10.3 million U.S. adults have had serious suicidal thoughts. So many people are silently hurting.Award-winning author and popular speaker Gregory L. Jantz, PhD, equips readers to step up and speak out to those who may be considering suicide in his new book, So Much to Live For: How to Provide Help and Hope to Someone Considering Suicide. With great compassion and clear, actionable strategies, Jantz shows readers what to do, what to say, and how to intervene if they suspect a friend or loved one is considering suicide.“I say with both realism and optimism that hope can prevail over dark circumstances and belief in the future can provide the inspiration to press on,” writes Jantz. “I have seen scores of people meet their worries, fear, and anxieties head-on, helping them break through to recovery. I've seen hope win out over despair, trust win out over fear, faith triumph over adversity.”In So Much to Live For, readers will learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of suicide, understand the potential causes of suicide, and build the courage to step up and speak out to those who might be considering suicide. Jantz encourages readers to know they can be instrumental in helping to save a life, and gives them the knowledge and tools to know how.
Libros “Healing depression for life”, Gregory L. Jantz. “Indomable” Glennon Doyle. ¡Bienvenidas a nuestra tercera temporada! Teenagers can be moody, unpredictable and withdrawn, all signs – for almost any other age group– of an emotional problem. Unfortunately just being a teenager is something of an emotional problem. The transformation from child to adult is like a reptile shedding its skin, says psychologist Gregory L. Jantz, author of “When Your Teenager Becomes … The Stranger in Your House”.
Hump day is supposed to be happy, because you're halfway done with the work week. Instead it's stress day, split evenly between general worry and the kind of stress that makes suicide one of the leading causes of death for police officers. Friend to Friend: Hope for your Heart and Help from His Word
My friend, Michelle Cowling, joins me today on the podcast! She’ll share about her own insecurities as a first-time mom, how her philosophy of motherhood has changed over time and how God has taught her to not only receive grace but to also extend that same grace to her children. We also discuss the important role a mother plays in her son’s life and how that role changes as our children grow. Whether or not you have sons, this episode is for you! Friends and relatives of mothers, I believe this episode will give you insight -equipping you with knowing how to better pray for and graciously walk along side your mom friends. You will find Michelle’s transparency and humble approach to motherhood refreshing and encouraging! If you, like myself and my guest, have sons, then count it as an added bonus! She shares insight and resources from walking the same path of mothering sons. We take time to speak hope and courage to single moms and conclude that a mother’s heart to see her children succeed cannot rest alone in a husband, mentor or "perfect home” but can only truly rest in the heart of her Savior. Is there a difference between how men and women define their productivity strategies? Not necessarily. But there should be. Men and women have different ways of thinking, and there's research to back up that. Here's an article by Gregory L. Jantz Ph.D. that shows us how our brains work in different ways. Now, remember, no way is better than the other, they're just different. And understanding how our brain works, helps us create leverage and increase our results.
