Perhaps in no previous time has it become more obvious that boys are struggling. Their mental health challenges have become severe. Boys are behind girls in education and maturation. Screen time and social media have become an affliction. Many of our sons grow up courting violence. Many others live in quiet desperation. While arguments about the politics of masculinity abound, there is little help today for parents, schools, and communities to raise, educate, and nurture boys. In this podcast we interview Michael Gurian, PhD talks about how to connect with our boys and addresses differences in the neurology and overall psychology of our boys to better understand their needs.Michael Gurian is a marriage and family counselor in his thirty-fourth year of private practice (michaelgurian.com) and the New York Times bestselling author of thirty-six books. The Gurian Institute, which he cofounded in 1996, conducts research internationally, launches pilot programs, and trains professionals (gurianinstitute.com). Dr. Gurian has a new book out "Boys: A Rescue Plan" that delves further into this topic: https://a.co/d/2NmJdnY Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In this episode, I go deeper on the topic of codependency in parenting.I talk about what codependency is and how it shows up in the parent/child relationship - through a lack of healthy boundaries, enmeshment, over-involvement, and more. Codependency in parenting also correlates to permissive parenting. Single parents need to be especially vigilant, as codependency can unconsciously cause them to treat the child as their spouse. They may fill an internal void with the child's life and not give them space to develop their own sense of self.I speak about the negative impacts codependency in parenting has on children and teenagers, and also speak about energetic cords and energetic standpoint of problems it can cause.Ultimately, every step forward in your own healing of codependence will benefit your child (or future children). The all-consuming human pursuit of the self has destroyed bonds of life. So, Isaiah contrasts their choice: trusting in nations results in a desert; trusting in God results in a garden. Isaiah 35 is a poem that describes a future kingdom brought by a future messianic King who will put all things right. Christians believe that King is Jesus, who makes deserts bloom. References: "Until recent times, human beings usually had a permanent community of relatives. They had dozens of homes to go to. So, when a married couple had a fight, one or the other could go to a house three doors down and stay with a close relative until he or she was feeling tender again. Or if the kids got fed up with their parents that they couldn't stand it, they could march over to their uncle's for a while. Now this is rarely possible. Each family is locked into its little box...When we ponder what's happening in America, the answer is perfectly simple. We're lonesome. We don't have enough friends or relatives anymore." Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., quoted by Michael Gurian, The Wonder of Boys, 67

On this week's podcast, we're joined by two instrument-making legends, Michael Gurian and Dick Boak. Gurian was of course the namesake founder of Gurian Guitars, while Boak famously worked at Martin Guitars for four decades. Michael and Dick recently co-authored the Fretboard Journal's first standalone book, 'An Instrument Maker's Guide to Insanity and Redemption.' It's a compilation of off-beat and behind-the-scenes stories from dozens of instrument makers and repair people. Included are entries by George Gruhn, Kathy Wingert, Joe Glaser, Bob Taylor, Linda Manzer, and others. During our chat, the duo talks about how the book project came together, the recurring themes found amidst these various luthiers' tales, why instrument makers need to have a great sense of humor, and so much more. In addition to talking about the book, we also hear about the instruments Michael and Dick are currently working on, including the all-spruce guitar that Boak recently built. Michael shares stories from the old days of wood buying in New York City and tells us about how he just reunited with one of his old clients, Paul Simon. It's a great chat with two acoustic guitar innovators. "If you do great work, you absolutely deserve referrals, but you do not owe them. So you have to be willing to do a little bit of work to receive them, and you can't do the things that make everybody, including yourself, uncomfortable or feeling desperate." "It takes two things for a referral to happen: desire and opportunity." "When we can impact how our referral sources feel about us, and how I want them to feel about me or feel about you… we then earn the opportunity to direct how they think." "When you give a referral, your reputation goes with it every single time, and if the referral goes wrong, it is on you to help make it right." "Life is all about relationships and we get out of them exactly what we put into them." What does Janet's 8-month-old grandson have in common with a bunch of guys throwing darts at each other in a dark basement? A fascination with objects moving through space -- a nearly universal male tendency that Janet is witnessing in real-time as her grandson delights in pushing, pulling, and moving objects that are bigger than he is. You can learn so much about boys by simply observing them. It's not always easy to take (or make) time to do so -- especially when you're in the thick of parenting -- but those moments of observation help you understand the boy in front of you. They help you connect, and may even help calm your overwhelmed brain. Parenting (& child development) unfolds over time. "None of this happens over a moment or in a day," Jen says. You don't have to address every problem or issue immediately. Sometimes, Jen says, "the best thing you can do is go to bed." The problem will still be there in the morning, and you'll likely have a bit more energy and perspective. Remember that your son's actions are not a reflection of your parenting skills. Being a "good parent" doesn't mean that your son will never misbehave or make ill-advised choices. It means consistently loving, supporting, and nurturing your son through it all. When Michael Gurian published The Wonder of Boys in 1996, there "wasn't any national consciousness about boys' issues," he says. A quarter century later, there are dozens of books about boys, and parents, educators, and politicians alike are realizing that we must address boys' issues if we are to address the current epidemic of violence. Yet despite this progress, "we are still talking about ancillary concepts as to why these boys kill people rather than getting to the root causes of what's going on," Gurian says. We also "still don't systemically understand boys or how to raise them." What Parents Need to Know About Male Depression Male depression, for instance, is often unrecognized (and untreated) because it is covert. A boy who immerses himself in video games, does just enough school work to get by, or uses drugs or alcohol may actually be depressed. As many as 10-20% of males may be experiencing unrecognized depression, and these males are having an outsized impact on our culture and lives, Gurian says. Parents, healthcare providers, and counselors need to learn about male development -- and they need to learn how to recognize and respond to the signs of male depression, which may include anger, irritability, withdrawal, and substance use. Parents and educators must also partner together to figure out how to help boys succeed in school. How Parents Can Partner with Schools to Help Boys Succeed "Parents and schools need to get really well connected around a specific question: How do we make sure the boys can succeed as well as the girls?" Gurian says. He suggests parents of boys connect with other parents of boys (from at least 3 other families) to create teams to share info, gather data, and approach school administration, expressing their concern and willingness to help address gender disparities in academics and discipline referrals. In this episode, Jen, Janet, & Michael discuss: Progress we've made -- and not made -- regarding boys' issues over the last 2+ decades What the Left and Right get wrong about boys & men Why you may want to consider going organic Male depression The need to train healthcare providers & counselors in male development Importance of fathers and male mentoring Advocating for boys at school How tech affects boys' brains Boys & violence Male bonding "Toxic masculinity" Links we mentioned (or should have) in this episode: Gurian Institute -- online home for all things Gurian (includes links to his books, classes, & upcoming events) What We Must Do to Stop the Killing -- blog post by Michael Gurian Helping Boys Thrive virtual summit, sponsored by The Boys Initiative and Gurian Institute -- online event happening October 8, 2022 (register HERE) The Wonder of Boys: What Parents, Educators, and Mentors Can Do to Help Boys Become Exceptional Men, by Michael Gurian The Minds of Boys: Saving Our Sons from Falling Behind in School and Life, by Michael Gurian and Kathy Stevens Saving Our Sons: A New Path for Raising Healthy & Resilient Boys, by Michael Gurian Anxiety and Depression in Boys -- ON BOYS episode Kellen CARES Foundation -- non-profit that helps young men & their families navigate mental health issues My Family Tested 20 Kid-Safe Phones & Devices -- and These Were the Best -- article mentioned at 23:10 BACK TO SCHOOL is happening around the globe and that carries it's own set of challenges. The battle of the sexes is the longest running battle in human history. Waged on playgrounds, in homes and pretty much anywhere you can find people, the conflict has in recent years taken on a new dimension in the West, with one side – the males – being declared toxic. Are the good old boys really so bad? To discuss this, Oksana is joined by psychotherapist and bestselling author Michael Gurian.
After a busy life raising a family and building a career in sales at Sony, Barbara Annis turned her interest in gender differences into a lifelong mission to bring Gender Intelligence into the workplace. In today’s episode, Barbara shares the story of her journey with Paul, and explains why there’s so much more to accomplish. One of the biggest ‘a-ha’ moments for Barbara was when she realized she wasn’t being fully authentic in her life. She describes how her persona at work, where she took on ‘alpha’ male behaviors to fit in and compete with her male colleagues, clashed with who she really was. Paul shared how when he first met Barbara, he instantly understood what she meant using the term “Gender Intelligence.” He says the title of Barbara’s first book, “Same Words, Different Language,” also rang true to him. Barbara described the process of writing, then editing her first book. She says it was well received, and a common reaction from people was “why didn’t I know this 20 years ago?” She says it was always her goal to create balanced learning for both men and women, without blame. She says men find it very freeing, and women find it incredibly validating. Find Barbara’s first book “Same Words, Different Language” here: https://www.amazon.ca/Same-Words-Different-Language-Intelligence/dp/0134513274 Barbara and Paul discussed some of the books Barbara co-authored. She described how her work with author Michael Gurian led to their partnership to write “Leadership and the Sexes. Find “Leadership and the Sexes” by Barbara Annis and Michael Gurian here: https://www.amazon.ca/Leadership-Sexes-Science-Business-2008-08-25/dp/B01FKWTYO0/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=annis+gurian&qid=1618508935&s=books&sr=1-1 Paul and Barbara also discussed Barbara’s book with John Gray entitled “Work With Me,” and how the two authors collaborated on ways to be authentically Gender Intelligent at home and at work. Find “Work With Me” by Barbara Annis and John Gray here: https://www.amazon.ca/Work-Me-Intelligence-Succeed-Barbara/dp/B00QAU26YC/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=barbara+annis+john+gray&qid=1618509058&s=books&sr=1-2 Today, Barbara describes her life as being much different than it was before the Covid-19 pandemic. Due to the success of her books and consulting work, Barbara spent many years ‘living out of a suitcase,’ and traveling from one keynote address to another. Today she does most of her work virtually. She says she’s finally convinced that workshops can be delivered virtually, and it’s an extremely useful platform for learning. That’s a big advantage for companies that wanted her to be able to scale her corporate learning programs globally. Barbara says the pandemic hasn’t changed her mission to bring the value of Gender Intelligence to thousands of organizations. She says a key to that is her “Be Gender Intelligent” online learning platform. It’s a 15-hour program where learners can earn their Gender Intelligence Ambassador certification. Childhood trauma is devastating. When a child's brain develops it is exquisitely sensitive to stress - before and after birth. Stress hormones literally rewire the brain, affect healthy attachment, and impair the development of pathways that promote self-regulation. This means that when we see highly dysregulated behaviour it is often due to childhood trauma. In this episode we talk with psychologist Dr Michael Gurian about different types of trauma and how they affect child development - causing not only mental health issues but also physical illness even decades later. Learn more about the Adverse Childhood Experiences Study and what you can do to prevent the harmful effect of ACEs in your own children. Dr Gurian also shares his own experience with childhood sexual abuse. (Please be aware that we speak frankly about sexual abuse in this episode).
Tim has been an ordained pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America since April of 1984 when he joined Community Church of Joy, Glendale, AZ, as the associate pastor after graduating from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. Much of the work Tim did during his 22 years at Joy centered around creating seeker-friendly worship experiences, managing the staff, and overseeing Joy’s Leadership Center. In 1994, Abingdon released Tim’s first book, A Community of Joy: How to Create Contemporary Worship. The book went on to become a “standard” book in Church Growth Circles on Worship and was even used in some Christian colleges/Seminaries as a recommended text on Contemporary Worship. Other books included Unfinished Evangelism: More Than Getting Them in the Door (Augsburg); a handbook on worship called Contemporary Worship (Abingdon); The Ministry Marathon (Abingdon); and The Prodigal Hugging Church (Augsburg Fortress). Tim has had the opportunity to lead training seminars for pastors and church leaders in Australia, England, Finland, Canada, France, and Germany. In March of 2005 he left Joy to start a sister congregation of Joy called Community of Grace, in Peoria, AZ. This new church start has enabled him to pursue new ministry opportunities, specifically in the areas of connecting the church’s mission to the wider world, resulting in 3 trips to Rwanda; and in finding new ways to disciple children through adults based on the latest in brain research and theology. That’s when Michael Gurian came into his life! Tim and Michael Gurian have been working together since 2006 on issues of boys and girls. Together they have created several rites of passage programs and they travel the country presenting a one day seminar called The Helping Boys Thrive Summit. Tim’s newest books are available on Amazon: Searching For Tom Sawyer: How Parents and Congregations Can Stop the Exodus of Boys from Church; and Sunday Schooling Our Kids out of Church: The True Story of How One Congregation Dropped Sunday School to Save its Soul. Tim is married to his high-school sweetheart, Jan. They have two children: daughter Alycia, married to Corey, and son Mike, married to Amber, and 5 grandchildren. Brad Leslie was one of the founders of The Young Men's Adventure Weekend, an event that takes teens through a series of challenging adventures designed to draw out the qualities he will need as a man. The creation of the YMAW program was informed by numerous rites of passage from around the world, incorporating long-standing traditions in to a palatable journey for the young men of this era and culture. Brad breaks down a number of definitions and key points in the work of initiating young men: Initiation as a starting point. A lift-off point from which you cannot go back. A boy's journey from "Mom's world" to "man's world" and the journey in between. What initiation looks like in some indigenous cultures. Initiation - The transformation from needy & dependent to accountable & useful. What uninitiated men look like. What the initiated man looks like. A young man looking for camaraderie will join a team, a gang, or the military to initiate himself. The Boy Crisis - by Warren Farrell and John Gray The value of sports teams in building the character of young men. 3 steps in an initiation: Separation from community, Ordeal/Challenge, Return to community. The value of separating boys and girls to teach them about manhood and womanhood as they age. Michael Gurian's book - The Purpose of Boys. Why sex does not pass as an initiation in to manhood. How men drain their vital energy by getting in to co-dependent relationships. The simple way that men can connect with young men just by hanging out. The result of a culture that doesn't have elders. The odd story of how we lost our elders in the US and Canada. Elephants have elders too. Initiation for men who were never initiated - get in to self-development work and find a men's group. The ultimate cheat code to initiating yourself in to manhood - get in to service to your community. The Young Men's Adventure Weekend happens every July in the lower mainland area of Vancouver, BC, Canada. This event happens because men volunteer to make it happen, and young men aged 12-18 sign up.Young men, go here to sign up for a life-changing experience.Men, go here to be of service and transform how you see young men. There are other events that happen in other corners of North America.
