We sat down for a talk with conductor Paul McCreesh. First established as the Artistic Director of Gabrieli Consort & Players, he now guest-conducts some of the world's finest orchestras including the Leipzig Gewandhaus, Bergen Philharmonic, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Sydney Symphony, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Montreal Symphony, New Japan Philharmonic, Verbier Festival Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra and Dallas Symphony. He is a former Principal Conductor and Artistic Director at the Gulbenkian Orchestra, Lisbon, and served for six seasons as Artistic Director of the Wratislavia Cantans festival in Wrocław, Poland.

She has performed as soloist with the orchestras of Cleveland, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle, the Boston Pops, Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, NDR Symphony, Zurich Chamber Orchestra, Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, Strasbourg Philharmonic, Bournemouth Symphony, Camerata Ireland, Belgrade Symphony, Amsterdam Symphony, and the Akbank Chamber Orchestra in Turkey, among others. Lara has also performed with the Queensland Orchestra, Adelaide Symphony, ACO², Auckland Philharmonia, Tokyo Symphony, Kyoto Symphony, Yomiuri Nippon Symphony, Hong Kong Philharmonic, China Philharmonic, Hangzhou Symphony and the Shanghai Symphony. She has technique to burn and plays at a constant high heat.” Lara owns and runs her own label, Ancalagon, which she founded in 1999.  Bach: The Six Sonatas & Partitas for Violin Solo was the best-selling double album on iTunes in 2007.  Her 2008 world premiere recording of Matthew Hindson's Violin Concerto prompted Gramophone to write: “It's the sort of work that should get audiences running, not walking, back to concert halls on new-music nights.” In 2009, American Record Guide said of her Vivaldi/Piazzolla disc with the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela: “I can imagine no suaver, more atmospheric performance.”  Her Mozart recording won a Juno Award in 2011. In 2014, her Schubert album with Berlin Philharmonic harpist Marie-Pierre Langlamet, cellist Ludwig Quandt and soprano Anna Prohaska was chosen as one of ‘The Best CDs of Spring' by Der Tagsesspiegel and MDR Figaro recommended it for its “boundless enchantment.” Her 2016 release of re-imagined folk music with pianist Matt Herskowitz got a five-star review from All About Jazz: “Music like this is beyond imagination and talent. It exists only in the loosely-held molecules found on the razor's edge of Creation.” She has been featured in People, US News and World Report, on CNN's Showbiz Today, NPR's All Things Considered, CBC, BBC, a Bravo! Special: Live at the Rehearsal Hall and on the cover of Strings. Lara began playing the violin when she was two years old. She made her first appearance as soloist with orchestra at age four, and her European debut with the Gulbenkian Orchestra when she was 10. She toured Spain, France, Portugal and Hungary at ages 12 and 13 and entered the Curtis Institute at 13. Her teachers have included Felix Galimir and Joey Corpus. From 1979 to 1987 he was professor of cello at the Moore's School of Music at the University of Houston. During the summer, he is a faculty member at The Meadowmount School of Music and The Young Artist Program at the National Arts Center in Ottawa Canada under the direction of Pinchas Zukerman. He has been a guest professor at the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California, The Oberlin College Conservatory, The Eastman School of Music, The Academy of Music in Sydney, The Royal Academy of Music in Copenhagen, the Tokyo College of Music and the Musashino Academy of Music in Japan, the Festival de Musica de Santa Catarina in Brazil, The Jerusalem Music Center, and the PyeongChang International festival and School in Korea.   Mr. Jensen has performed as a soloist in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Japan including solo appearances with the Danish Radio Orchestra, the Basel Symphony Orchestra, the Copenhagen Symphony, and the Irish Radio Orchestra under the baton of conductors such as: Simon Rattle, Mistislav Rostropovich and Carlo Zecchi. Episode #100 with guest John Brancy on the power of voice, song, psylocibin mushroom and the journey of holistic visions.  Baritone John Brancy is “a vibrant, resonant presence” (New York Times) on the international opera, concert and recital stages. Brancy is the recent winner of the 1st Place Prize at the 2018 Montreal International Music Competition, 1st Place Prize at the 2018 Kurt Weill Foundation's Lotte Lenya Competition, 2nd Place Prize at the 2017 Wigmore Hall International Song Competition and the Media Prize at the Hans-Gabor Belvedere International Vocal Competition. This 18/19 season, Brancy performs an eclectic season of new music, his memorial in song recital tour and several key debuts in concert and opera. Brancy makes a return to Oper Frankfurt for a new production of Olga Neuwirth’s Lost Highway directed by MacArthur Genius grant recipient Yuval Sharon, conducted by Karsten Januschke. Brancy will then embark on a national tour of his critically acclaimed programs A Silent Night: A WWI Memorial in Song and Armistice: The Journey Home with internationally renowned pianist and collaborator Peter Dugan. This tour takes Brancy to locations such as Stanford University, West Point Academy, the Smithsonian Institute, the US Naval Academy and the Kennedy Center to name a few. Brancy then goes on to sing a tour of Handel’s Messiah with performances in Victoria Symphony in Canada, the Johnstown Symphony and a return to Carnegie Hall’s Isaac Stern stage under the baton of Kent Tritle. Brancy then makes his way to Lisbon, Portugal for a semi-staged production of Romeo et Juliet with the Gulbenkian Orchestra and Chor conducted by star ascendant conductor Lorenzo Viotti. Additonally, Brancy will collaborate again with director Yuval Sharon as a featured performer on a new production of Meredith Monk’s ATLAS, this will mark Brancy’s debut with the LA Philharmonic. Brancy is also the co-creator of Operation Superpower, a Superhero Opera for children that aims to combat bullying through the courage of knowing and believing in one's own Superpower and voice.

Peter Pan is a 1950 musical adaptation of J. M. Barrie's play Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up with music and lyrics by Leonard Bernstein; it opened on Broadway on April 24, 1950.[1] This version starred Jean Arthur as Peter Pan, Boris Karloff in the dual roles of George Darling and Captain Hook, and Marcia Henderson as Wendy. The show was orchestrated by Hershy Kay and conducted by Benjamin Steinberg. The show ran for 321 performances, closing on January 27, 1951. The production was initially intended as a full-blown musical, with Bernstein composing a complete score for it, but was staged with only five songs – "Who Am I?", "Pirate's Song", "Plank Round", "Build My House", and "Peter Peter" – to accommodate the limited vocal ranges of the principals. In 2000, conductor Alexander Frey learned about the full score, and restored the omitted material, which included almost an hour of previously unperformed Bernstein music. The restored songs included "Captain Hook Soliloquy" and "Dream With Me". The world premiere recording of Bernstein’s complete score was released on CD in 2005, conducted by Frey, and featuring Broadway star Linda Eder in the role of Wendy Darling, and baritone Daniel Narducci as Captain Hook, on the Koch International Classics label. In September 2008 the world premiere performance of the full Bernstein score was performed in concert with Alexander Frey conducting the Gulbenkian Orchestra, and dialogue adapted from the original J. M. Barrie play by Nina Bernstein Simmons. Three performances were given in Cascais, Portugal, for a combined audience of over 10,000 people, and featured Geraldine James (narrator), John Sackville-West (Peter Pan), Charlotte Ellett and Rachel Nicholls(Wendy) and Nicholas Lester (Captain Hook). The first stage production of the full Bernstein score was given by Santa Barbara Theater (California) in December 2008, directed by Albert Ihde and again conducted by Alexander Frey. A new chamber adaptation of the score will be produced at the Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts in June 2018, directed by Christopher Alden.

Today we are featuring an interview with Marc Ramirez. Originally from New York, Marc is the principal bassist with the Gulbenkian Orchestra of Lisbon, Portugal. Marc and I had a great conversation about his path to this job overseas, where he has now been for 17 years. We talk about similarities and differences in American and European orchestras, auditioning, traveling with a bass, his beautiful Cavani bass, and many other topics. We also feature excerpts from Marc’s performance of the Bottesini Grande Duo Concertante para Violino e Contrabaixo with Bin Chao on violin. Up Magazine recently did a great profile on Marc covering his journey from the United States to Portugal, touring with the Gulbenkian Orchestra, and many other topics.
