Die Hölle des Nordens In zwei spektakulären Rennen wurden die neuen Siegerinnen und Sieger im Velodrome von Roubaix ermittelt. Bei den Männern prägten viele Defekte das Renngeschehen, ehe am Ende Wout van Aert und Tadej Pogacar um den Sieg sprinteten. Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP   It's Paris–Roubaix week, and it felt like the perfect time to bring back one of the interviews I'd wanted to do from the very start of Life in the Peloton. Sitting down with Tom Boonen at his place in Mol is still one of my favourite conversations we've had on the pod, so I thought this was the right moment to share it again.   When it comes to the Cobbled Classics, Tom's palmarès are mind blowing. He's the joint record holder for wins at both Flanders (3) and Roubaix (4), as well as the outright record holder for the most wins at E3 (5). Just one of those victories would define most careers, but Tom can also count three Gent–Wevelgems, a couple of Scheldeprijs titles and a world championship for good measure.   This was an extra special pod for me personally. Tom's career wrapped up in 2017, which meant I spent a big part of my own racing career lining up against him at the Classics and getting my legs blown off by his attacks. He was the wheel everyone wanted to be on when the racing got serious. I managed it once… have a listen to hear how that went.   I was lucky enough to sit down with Tom at his home in Mol and really get stuck into chatting about the races that we both love so much. He's a fantastic interviewee, and I got a real buzz from the excitement he still clearly feels when talking through the ups and downs of his biggest wins and defeats.   As well as revisiting some of the most legendary Classics moments of the last decade, I also got to ask a few questions I'd always wanted to know the answers to. What was it really like being a superstar in such a cycling-mad country? How did he handle the pressure of becoming world champion at just 24? And we also talked about a comeback story that often gets overlooked alongside Matt Hayman's incredible ride at the 2016 Paris–Roubaix.   Honestly, I could have stayed chatting about the microscopic details of the Arenberg sector for hours if I could. Die Pavé-Sektoren mit groben Pflastersteinen fordern besondere Leidensfähigkeit von den Fahrern. Der Glarner Urs Freuler, 10-facher Weltmeister auf der Bahn und Sieger von 15 Giro-d'Italia-Etappen, ist die Hölle des Nordens in den 80er Jahren neun Mal gefahren – und kennt die Tücken des Kurses wie kaum ein anderer Profi.  Intensive Strecken-Recons waren zu Freulers Zeit wederüblich noch möglich. Darum hätte er sich an die «Schüttelei» von Mal zu Mal gewöhnen müssen. «Man muss erst lernen, dieses Rennen zu begreifen», so Urs Freuler, der heute mit dem Radsport immer noch verbunden ist. SCHMERZEN UND STÜRZE Freuler erinnert sich an die Eigenheiten der Hölle des Nordens, und erzählt unter anderem über- seine «Hassliebe» zu diesem Rennen, - seine Schmerzen und Stürze,  - das Material von früher, - die Schlüsselstellen wie den Wald von Arenberg, - seine Konkurrenten, darunter der Ire Sean Kellyoder der Holländer Adrie van der Poel, der Vater von Mathieu van der Poel - oder die Ernährung vor dem Rennen, die mit der heutigen nichts zu tun hat.  Paris - Roubaix wird in diesem Jahr am 12. Ursula Hertewich ist überzeugt, dass viel zu viele Missverständnisse über das Bild von Heiligen existieren. „Der Begriff Heiligkeit wird leider viel zu häufig verwechselt mit moralischem Hochleistungssport,“ erklärt sie. Es ginge in keiner Weise um Fehlerlosigkeit oder Makellosigkeit, sondern darum, sich zu trauen, ganz zu sein vor Gott – das Menschsein zu entfalten, mit allen Facetten, die dazu gehören. Und Fehler gehörten eben unbedingt zu Heiligen dazu. Aufgewachsen ist Ursula Hertewich in der kleinen Gemeinde Wadgassen im Saarland, wo Sie mit kurzen Unterbrechungen 30 Jahre Ihres Lebens verbracht hat. Obwohl sie Pharmazie studiert und im Fach auch promoviert hat, entschied sie sich gegen eine Karriere und trat ins Kloster Arenberg ein, wo sie nun seit 19 Jahren lebt. Und sich als Seelsorgerin engagiert. Sie liebt menschliche Begegnungen, weil sie eine andere Sicht auf das Leben ermöglichen und uns sowie unsere Entwicklung bereichern. Der Orden der Dominikaner wurde im frühen 13. Jahrhundert vom heiligen Dominikus gegründet. Als erster Orden für das Heil der Menschheit. Es ist diese Weltoffenheit, die Schwester Ursula von Anbeginn begeistert hat und die sie in all ihrem Tun praktiziert. Sie schreibt Bücher über Themen, die uns alle bewegen (unter anderem das Buch „Zwei Sichten“ zusammen mit dem Autor Mirko Kussin). Und sie ist unterwegs auf Social Media. Ordensschwester Ursula Hertewich – eine Frau, die sich einen frischen und unverstellten Blick auf das Leben und alle kirchlichen Bräuche bewahrt hat – und viel darüber zu erzählen weiß.

The Cicle Classic is England's answer to the spring classics. Paris-Roubaix is the Hell of the North so perhaps this ought to be known as the Beast in the East. The race celebrates its 20th anniversary this month, with the 2025 edition taking place on Sunday, April 27. Held in the East Midlands, the race criss-crosses the countryside, taking in rough, rutted farm tracks. If it was created today it would be considered a gravel race. The Tour of Flanders has the Koppenberg, Gent-Wevelgem has the Kemmelberg, Paris-Roubaix has the Arenberg – the Cicle Classic has Somerberg. Lionel Birnie explores the history and character of the UK's highest-ranked one-day race and hears from the founder Colin Clews who had the idea, Matt Stephens, who was third in the first edition two decades ago, Conor Dunne, who won in 2016 and James McCallum, who was on the podium in arguably the most dramatic and certainly the muddiest edition in 2012. From Omloop, through E3 and Wevelgem, Flanders, and then the big one - Paris Roubaix; these are the biggest and best races on the calendar for me, so I was super excited to sit down with Tom Southam and Luke Durbridge to break down this year's edition of Paris Roubaix in this month's Race Communique. This year's Roubaix was an absolute cracker; totally flat out from the gun. Even before Arenberg - where the race used to really kick off back in my day - the bunch was strung out and the real favourites were taking huge chunks out of each other. Tom, Luke, and I run through the riders that really made this race such an epic edition. Of course, it was dominated by Mathieu Van Der Poel on his way to his third victory in a row, but what about Pogačar?! His first go at Roubaix and he's up there rubbing shoulders with the big boys, and I literally mean the big boys; he's ten kilos lighter than most of these guys! Southam made a good point actually; is he going to be carrying some extra timber into the Ardennes that kick off next week? Of course, we also had the women's race the day before. That's something I love about Roubaix; the men's and women's races being on different days means we get a whole weekend of Paris-Roubaix action! What a cool race, with absolute legend Pauline Ferrand-Prévot putting her immense off-road skills to use to become the first French rider to list that big cobblestone since Frédéric Guesdon in 1997. I absolutely loved to see the GOAT herself; Marianne Vos, riding in support of her Visma LAB team mate; for me, that's what makes her a true champion. Obviously, there's been other races going on aside from the cobbled classics. We wanted to talk briefly about the Tour of the Basque country, and for good reason; after a few years in the wilderness, Caleb Ewan is winning at the highest level again. What a move that transfer to Ineos turned out to be! It's so cool to see Caleb getting his hands in the air again, and I think it represents a real shift in mentality at Ineos - who have been looking a bit lost for a few seasons now.  Southam was actually down in the Basque country in the car for EF Pro cycling - who knocked out a stage win with young Ben Healy - so he gives us a quick breakdown of the race in this week's Talking Tactics. Healy's win came after a ridiculous 57km solo move, so this month Tom's talking about the art of the solo breakaway. We see these long range attacks sticking more and more these days; with everyone aero optimised and more and more data and information being fed to riders. Southam compared his view from the car to being behind a rider in a TT, and being able to feed him really accurate cues about the course ahead played a huge part in Healy's win.  Poor old Durbo got a bit cut off in this month's Pelo Chat, so we rolled it in ahead of the Communi-Quiz! Durbo wanted to talk about race programmes, and how the teams decide who's racing where. Of course, the Spring Classics is a savage block of racing; and plenty of riders don't make it all the way to the end owing to sickness or injury, which creates plenty of headaches for team directors trying to pull together squads at short notice.  As always, we wrapped up with the Communi-Quiz. Poetry of Witness is our fourth conversation in a series centering the Warscapes anthology Insurgent Feminisms: Writing War (Daraja Press). Featuring Otoniya J. Okot Bitek, Jehan Bseiso and Meg Arenberg. What is the poet's role in the event of the erasure of an entire people? Even as we deem certain acts of violence as “unspeakable” and “indescribable”? As the refrain “no words left” rings in our ears, many of us find ourselves seeking solace or sense from poetic language. Poetry and poets have long been understood (and also wilfully misunderstood) for the ability to deploy resistance to silence and to complicity. More than ever, words matter and words provide witness. Meg Arenberg will speak with poets Jehan Bseiso and Otonya J. Okot Bitek about their respective writing practice, their sense of poetry's role in a violent world, the value of poetry in the face of numbing horrors, and their specific work putting words to the unspeakable in Palestine and Rwanda.Otoniya Juliane Okot Bitek is an Acholi poet. Her 100 Days (University of Alberta 2016) a book of poetry that reflects on the meaning of memory two decades after the Rwanda genocide, was nominated for several writing prizes including the 2017 BC Book Prize, the Pat Lowther Award, the 2017 Alberta Book Awards and the 2017 Canadian Authors Award for Poetry. It won the 2017 IndieFab Book of the Year Award for poetry and the 2017 Glenna Luschei Prize for African Poetry. Otoniya's poem “Migration: Salt Stories” was shortlisted for the 2017 National Magazine Awards for Poetry in Canada. Her poem “Gauntlet” was longlisted for the 2018 CBC Poetry Prize and is the title of her most recent work, a chapbook with the same title from Nomados Press (2019). She is an assistant professor of Black Creativity at Queen's University in Kingston, which occupies the lands of the Anishinaabe and the Haudenosaunee people. Otoniya's work has been published widely online, in print and in literary magazines.Jehan Bseiso is a poet, researcher, and aid worker. Her poetry has been published on several online platforms. Her co-authored book I Remember My Name is the Palestine Book Awards winner in the creative category (2016). She is the co-editor of Making Mirrors: Writing/Righting by and for Refugees (2019). Jehan has been working with Médecins sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders since 2008.Meg Arenberg is an Assistant Professor of Comparative Literature in the Department of Humanities and the African Languages and Translation Program at the Africa Institute. She earned her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Indiana University Bloomington in 2016. Prior to joining the Africa Institute, she completed postdoctoral research positions in the Department of African, Middle Eastern, and South Asian Languages and Literatures (AMESALL) at Rutgers University, New Brunswick and the African Humanities Colloquium at Princeton University. It's my favourite time of the cycling year and I am so stoked to be able to bring you an absolute legend of the Classics, a Flandrien legend, and a true king of the cobbles, Tom Boonen.  When it comes to the Cobbled Classics, Tom's palmarès are mind blowing: he is the joint record holder for wins at both Flanders (3) and Roubaix (4) as well as being the out and out record holder for the most wins in E3 (5). Just one of those wins would be enough for most riders, but he can also count three Ghent Wevelgem's, a couple of Schelderprijs… and we may as well mention his world championship for good measure.  This is an extra special pod for my personally, as Tom's career wound up in 2017, meaning that I spent a good portion of my racing career at the classics getting my legs blown off by his attacks, and knowing that his was the wheel that everyone wanted to be on when the races got serious (I managed it once - have a listen to see how that went…). I was lucky enough to sit down with Tom at his home in Mol and really get in to chatting about the races that we both love so much. Tom is a fantastic interviewee, and I got a real buzz from the excitement that he obviously felt recalling the ups and downs of his career and the details of some of his most incredible wins and defeats.  As well as getting some great takes on the races that have become legendary in the last decade, I got to ask some of the other questions that I'd always wanted to know about; what was it really like being a superstar in such a cycling mad country? How did he handle the pressure of being a 24 year old world champion? I also got to ask about a comeback story that is remarkable in that it has always been overshadowed by Matt Hayman's own incredible tale around the 2016 Paris Roubaix.  Amazingly after such a successful career, Tom hasn't sat back and just smoked cigars since 2017. He's now a racing car driver and he talks as passionately about his new career as he does his old one.
