The Director of STEAM and the Imagination Lab at Richmond Community Schools, Steven Hensley, joins us to discuss building a brand new and innovative program from the ground up. Steven Hensley serves as the Director of STEAM & Imagination Lab at Richmond Community Schools. His journey into education was not exactly linear, but he is so glad to have found his way here. Steven has been privileged as a classroom educator for the last six years, teaching anything from AP Computer Science to Biology 1, with the majority of his teaching experience at the 9th and 10th grade level and his beloved middle school kiddos. Steven works passionately to develop cross curricular units and weave in interdisciplinary techniques, all from an inquiry based instructional approach. He champions the best ideas and techniques for kids because at the end of the day, “if it doesn't work for kids, it doesn't work." Moderated by Keep Indiana Learning Digital Learning Coach, Tim Arnold. Tim Arnold is a District eLearning Specialist with Richmond Community schools in Richmond, IN. Prior to that he was a social studies teacher, coach, and educational leader at Nettle Creek Schools in Hagerstown,IN. Tim was selected as a Top Ten Educator in the State of Indiana in 2008, taught Social Studies methods in the Earlham College Master of Arts in Teaching program, and has presented at multiple local, state and national conferences (ICE, HECC, CanvasCon, InstructureCon, ISTE) on topics he is passionate about including blended learning, student engagement, Canvas, G Suite for Education, and EduProtocols. Additionally, Tim holds certifications in Technology Leadership (CIESC Cohort 8), Google (Level 1), FlipGrid, and Nearpod and collaborates with @RCSLearn colleagues to host a Twitter chat with over 130 episodes. The Oregon Tribal Student Grant program aims to help members of the nine federally recognized Native American tribes in Oregon who are attending eligible colleges or universities in the state. The grant will cover the costs of attendance beyond additional federal and state financial aid and can be used for tuition, housing, books and other expenses. The Oregon Legislature approved the program for one year. It's unclear if it will continue after the 2022-2023 school year. At least 531 people have started applications, according to HECC. We hear from Sandy Henry, education director for the Cow Creek Band of the Umpqua Tribe of Indians and Ben Cannon, executive director of Oregon's Higher Education Coordinating Commission, which administers the grant.
Can we have a real conversation about what it feels like for classroom teachers when an e-learning specialist, full of good intent and ideas, enters their classroom? We'll be looking at perspectives of both parties, and trying to arrive at a healthy and helpful compromise that best serves teachers and therefore students. After teaching 6th grade for a number of years, along with a few other experiences, he became one of Richmond Community Schools' first eLearning Specialists. Mom Enough: Parenting tips, research-based advice + a few personal confessions!
Where should we turn if we think our child's development might not be on track? For example, our toddler isn't saying as many words as other kids her age? Or, our one-year-old isn't sleeping through the night? Or perhaps our three-year-old is aggressive with other kids? And what if our parents or other family members tell us one thing, based on their cultural traditions and beliefs, and our healthcare provider or an early childhood professional suggests something else? This is a common dilemma. But this week's Mom Enough guest, Zang Vang-Lee, brings wisdom on how to bridge those two worlds, based on her own experience as a Hmong mother of three and an experienced early childhood professional with a Masters of Education from the University of Minnesota. Zang speaks with grace and respect about her own parents' more relaxed approach -- “He'll do it when he's ready” -- compared to professional encouragement to take a child in for early childhood screening. She tells how a shaman helped her family get through a rough time with an unconsolable infant, as well as how her whole family came together around a wise decision to seek professional help for another challenge. Most of all, Zang explains and exemplifies how important it is for early childhood professionals to do all they can to understand a family's culture and history, build a relationship of trust, and listen carefully in order to co-create a plan that addresses the needs and strengths of the child and the whole family. Marti & Erin thank Help Me Grow for their sponsorship of this informative and inspiring discussion with Zang Vang-Lee, as well as their long-time supporting partnership with Mom Enough. WHAT CULTURAL BACKGROUND OR FAMILY HISTORY FACTORS HAVE PLAYED A ROLE IN YOUR PARENTING? How does your cultural background or history shape the way you think about early child development? To what extent do you and the previous generation in your family hold the same beliefs, and does that pose a dilemma when you are deciding how to handle a difficult parenting situation? Where do you turn for information that you can trust to help you figure out the best next step for your child and you? Visit the Help Me Grow website to see how their carefully developed resources can help you learn more about child development and where to go if you are concerned about one of your children.
