Enslaved in 1840s Virginia, Henry Brown has himself nailed into a postal crate and mailed to a free state. But that's less than half his story. In freedom, he becomes Henry Box Brown, and uses his escape box as the basis for a subversive magic act that sees him tour the stages of the UK and Canada — his final home.
So The Mariners missed an opportunity to re-write the history books on Saturday and secure a record breaking sixth straight away win but they did at least remain unbeaten on the road with a hard fought point at Newport, remarkably our first draw of the season. The guys begin by discussing whether or not it was a point gained or two dropped, the heroics of MOTM Jordan Wright and the controversial penalty award he superbly saved. The conversation then moves on to the recent cup success of the youth team, the senior debuts for Callum Storr and Henry Brown and the exciting future of the club's academy.
In this essay, Henry Brown examines the controversial participation of anarchists in the Republican Army during the Spanish Civil War (1936-9). Despite the universal association of anarchism with antimilitarism, the Spanish anarchists responded to the demands of antifascist war in a nuanced fashion, creating a distinctive military subculture based on solidarity, comradeship, and clandestine political agitation. Henry Brown is a PhD candidate at the University of Kent, examining military culture and identity in the Popular Army of the Spanish Republic (1936-9). His most recent publications include ‘The Anarchist in Uniform: The Militarisation of Anarchist Culture during the Spanish Civil War' and his contribution to the Special Issue ‘Iberian Anarchism in Twentieth-Century History': ‘“¡Vivan las tribus!”: persecution, resistance and anarchist agency in the Popular Army.' This week we're re-delivering some of our favorite episodes about letters, packages and deliveries. In this episode from March 2021, Henry Brown escapes slavery from a Virginia plantation in a very unusual way: he arranged it so he could hide in a small wooden box that was sent to Pennsylvania. Plus: a paramedic rescues a doctor from a fiery car crash, 30 years after that same doctor had helped the paramedic survive as a newborn. Slavery cost him his family. That's when Henry ‘Box' Brown mailed himself to freedom. On today's Primary Source Monday offering, we have the first of a three-part series, which consists of most of the autobiography of J. Henry Brown. In 1847, while a lad of 15, Mr. Brown crossed the great prairies and mountains of the Oregon Trail in a wagon train with his father, grandfather, and sundry other relatives. Brown's grandfather kept a store back East in Illinois, and, being unable to liquidate it on congenial terms, packed all the inventory into wagons and hauled the whole thing across the country to Salem, where he set it up again. It was the first store in the history of the town of Salem. (For text and pictures, see https://www.loc.gov/item/wpalh002000/)

This episode for our Host Randal Wallace may be the most fun of any we have done. It tells the story of the life of the Congressional District and region of South Carolina that was the 6th District of South Carolina. It opens after ABSCAM has ended John Jenrette's career and everyone involved is moving on from the scandal. The District was represented by John Napier for a single term, then by a Florence , South Carolina Democrat named Robin Tallon for a number of years. But after the 1990 census the former 6th District is divided up geographically and its political strength evaporates. Tallon steps down as James Clyburn is elected to serve the new 6th District which engulfs Florence County. While Horry County is placed in the South Carolina First District where it is dominated by Charleston S.C. Over the next twenty years the region has several different Congressman all but one of which is from Charleston County with various interest levels for what is happening in Horry and Georgetown Counties. We are represented by Tommy Hartnett, Arthur Ravenell, Mark Sanford, Henry Brown (Berkely County) , and Tim Scott. Then in 2010 everything changed. A new census led to a big fight in the South Carolina State House as the state was awarded a new 7th Congressional District. We will see the maneuverings by the man who could rightfully be called the Father of the 7th district, Alan Clemmons, lead to the South Carolina Pee Dee Region finally getting its seat back in which the region was represented together. That is where the fun part for our Host begins as we relive that very first race for Congress and the election of that first 7th district Congressman ensues. which eventually led to the election of Tom Rice. A race in which our host, Randal Wallace, was a small part as a candidate for Congress. We will also see the rise of our new Congressman Russell Fry, who attained the office just at the beginning of this year , 2024, after his endorsement by former President Donald Trump, and his historic election victory. All of which will lead us back to a final look at the remarkable life and contributions to our region of our first, and until this year, only Horry County native Congressman John Jenrette. His career was a rollercoaster ride of wild excess, historic success, and an enormously dramatic and historic fall, all of which happened in a pivotal 6 year period that laid the foundation for a region of the country that can now lay claim to the title the fastest growing area in the nation. Had they opened the box, they would have been surprised to learn that the box contained Henry Brown, a Richmond slave who was mailing himself to freedom. In March 1849, Henry Box Brown, a slave paid $86 to ship himself into a 3-foot by 2-foot crate from his master's home in Richmond, Virginia, to Philadelphia. The box was lined with baize, a coarse woolen cloth with a small hole on one side for Brown to breathe. It was nailed and tied with straps and Brown carried with him a packet of biscuits and a can of water. Brown was fully prepared to ‘conquer or die' on his mission as he traveled 350 miles over 27 hours by a variety of wagons, railroads, steamboats, ferries, and finally, a delivery wagon that deposited the box in the office of the Philadelphia Anti-Slavery Society just before the office closed for the day. Brown reportedly jumped out the box and greeted the abolitionists Passmore Williamson, James Miller McKim, and the rest of the Philadelphia Vigilance Committee by saying. “How do you do, gentlemen?” 4:30 - 4:45 Advertisements CQ, LLC QK 4:45-5:20 Let's Dive In GÜD TYMZ: Güd Tymz was born out of our President and Co-Founder Michael Visher's realization that in order for edibles to work well in most social situations, they needed to kick in quickly and deliver a predictable experience that lasts for a reasonable amount of time. So he set out to create an edible that could do just that. In 2018, Michael joined forces with biochemist Dr. Audrey Shor to tackle the problems of slow-acting, inconsistently dosed cannabis edibles. Over many months of research and development, they successfully produced a wholly new, water-soluble cannabis formulation capable of powering truly fast-acting cannabis edibles and revolutionizing the edibles market. From there, Michael and Audrey dove head first into developing fun, novel edibles infused with their proprietary solution and designed to work perfectly in most any social setting. Combining pharmaceutical-grade delivery technology with confectionary chemistry, Güd Tymz was born. With dedicated attention to the highest quality ingredients and the most sophisticated processing techniques, Audrey and Michael launched Güd Tymz Cannabis-Infused Gelatin Shots in 2021 in Denver, Colorado, followed shortly by Güd Tymz Java Shots. History of Billy the Kid by Charles A. Siringo audiobook. A cowboy outlaw whose youthful daring has never been equalled in the annals of criminal history. When a bullet pierced his heart he was less than twenty-two years of age, and had killed twenty-one men, Indians not included. The author feels that he is capable of writing a true and unvarnished history of "Billy the Kid," as he was personally acquainted with him, and assisted in his capture, by furnishing Sheriff Pat Garrett with three of his fighting cowboys--Jas. H. East, Lee Hall and Lon Chambers. The facts set down in this narrative were gotten from the lips of "Billy the Kid," himself, and from such men as Pat Garrett, John W. Poe, Kip McKinnie, Charlie Wall, the Coe Brothers, Tom O'Phalliard, Henry Brown, John Middleton, Martin Chavez, and Ash Upson. All these men took an active part, for or against, the "Kid." Ash Upson had known him from childhood, and was considered one of the family, for several years, in his mother's home. Other facts were gained from the lips of Mrs. Charlie Bowdre, who kept "Billy the Kid," hid out at her home in Fort Sumner, New Mexico, after he had killed his two guards and escaped.

I really enjoyed my conversation with this week's guest — the one and only Keith Henry Brown. This prolific artist has a catalog that few can touch, with work appearing in The New York Times, Carnegie Hall, Blue Note Records, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music, just to name a few. But Keith is so much more than just an artist, as you'll come to find out!We started off talking about his current and upcoming book projects, and he shared how he balances his day job with his other career passions while giving a peek into his creative process. From there, he spoke about growing up in Staten Island, getting a shot to draw for Marvel Comics, and getting handpicked by Wynton Marsalis to be creative director at Jazz at Lincoln Center. We even spent some time geeking out about jazz, and he shared one of his dream projects that he'd love to accomplish one day. Keith's journey as a creative is all about not being afraid to do what you want to do — very inspiring!LinksKeith Henry Brown's WebsiteKeith Henry Brown on FacebookKeith Henry Brown on InstagramKeith Henry Brown on Twitter“Because of You, John Lewis”“My Dad Is A DJ”
This story of Henry Brown is 11:48 second long. It starts with him leaving his family at the age of 17 and his adventures from that time until his death at the age of 27. Yet he lived a full and interesting life. This is not a typical Wild West story as you will see.

Big Wireless Awaits Big Decision on T-Mobile/Sprint Merger Plan (0:34)Guest: John Kwoka, PhD, Neal F. Finnegan Distinguished Professor of Economics, Northeastern UniversityAT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint are the four main wireless carriers across the country. Two of them, T-Mobile and Sprint, are hoping to merge. But a dozen states filed a lawsuit to block the merger because they say it'll result in higher prices for wireless customers. That trial wrapped up a week ago, and we're now waiting for the judge's ruling. 10 Years After Citizens United (16:05)Guest: Michael Morley, JD, Assistant Professor of Law, Florida State University10 years ago, the US Supreme Court ruled that corporations and unions have a First Amendment right to express themselves through unlimited spending on campaign advertising, so long as they aren't directly donating to or coordinating with a candidate or party. In the very next Presidential election in 2012, spending by groups not directly linked to a candidate or party skyrocketed to $1 billion – three times what had been spent by so called “outside” groups in the 2008 presidential election, before Citizens United. And then in 2016, outside spending climbed to nearly one and a half billion dollars. The sky's the limit for 2020. So, was the Citizens United ruling a mistake? Henry ‘Box' Brown: The Man Who Mailed Himself Out of Slavery (39:35)Guest: Martha J. Cutter, PhD, Professor of English and Africana Studies, University of ConnecticutThroughout the practice of slavery in the United States, there were countless desperate attempts to escape. But few were as unique as Henry Brown who mailed himself to freedom in a box. The story became a core part of his identity and professional success as an entertainer. “Box” became his nickname. Why We Don't Have a Female World Chess Champion (50:43)Guest: Alexey Root, Professor of Education, University of Texas at DallasWe're on the final stretch of a 12-game match of Chess between two women - one will be named best female chess player in the world on Thursday. What's odd is that there's no title for male world champion – they only compete in the world championship for both genders. Confusing, I know. So why do women have their own tournament while men don't? Women do have an inherent physical disadvantage when it comes to sports, so it makes sense that we would compete separately in that arena. But in chess? It's only a battle of wits. How Bear Hibernation Might Work for Humans (1:06:12)Guest: Heiko Jansen, PhD, Professor of Integrative Physiology and Neuroscience, Washington State UniversityImagine if humans hibernated like bears. Science fiction has toyed with this idea for a long time – putting astronauts into hibernation could help them weather a years-long trip into space more easily. And they'd need less food and oxygen. Even if it wasn't full hibernation, but just a way to slow some of the body's systems down, that could be really useful in treating diseases like diabetes or cancer. Living Concrete: Scientists Create Bacteria-Based Buildings that Grow Themselves (1:23:35)Guest: Chelsea Heveran, Assistant Professor of Engineering, Montana State UniversitySmart homes are all the rage these days, but what if your house were alive? Not haunted, but alive in the sense that the building materials in the walls and floors contained living organisms that could regrow and repair themselves? Chelsea Heveran was part of a team developing a kind of living concrete made of sand and bacteria and some other special ingredients.
Steve Luxenberg has created an unusual history of the famous Supreme Court case Plessy v. Ferguson and the 19th century's segregationist practices in his book Separate: The Story of Plessy v. Ferguson, and America's Journey from Slavery to Segregation (Norton, 2019) It is unusual because it is chiefly an ensemble biography of Henry Brown, John Marshall Harlan, and Albion Tourgee, three men intimately connected with the Plessy case. The book covers the Antebellum period youth of the three men, each from a different part of the young nation and each encountering freedmen, slaves, and the institution of slavery in different social and political contexts. We follow these men through the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the post-Reconstruction period leading up to the Plessy decision. The Plessy case helped solidify official, state-enforced segregationist practices throughout the United States. It made the now-infamous phrase “separate but equal” a constitutional doctrine that was the law of the land until the 1950s and 1960s. Ian J. Drake is an Associate Professor of Political Science and Law at Montclair State University. His scholarly interests include American legal and constitutional history and political theory. Jen Bekman, Zoë Salditch, and Mike Merrill were our guests live on stage at the XOXO 2014 festival in Portland, Oregon, as part of the Story evening that also featured Hrishikesh Hirway's Song Exploder, featuring a song by The Thermals; John Roderick (The Long Winters) interviewing Chelsea Cain; and Harmontown with Dino Stamatopoulos.Jen Bekman founded 20x200 in 2007 to provide art at accessible prices. She spoke about her in work in 2012 at XOXO. Then she had a terrible, no good, very bad year. For a lot of reasons, she can't discuss the particulars of what happened, but she had to reboot 20x200: its site, its technology, its art, and its trust with existing customers. If you have beautiful digital art, you need a place to display it. That's the idea behind Electronic Objects, a massively funded Kickstarter project from a month ago. But Zoë Salditch's interest is less in the technology than the uses to which people will put it. In the midst of producing their EO1 model, they have artists in residence working on concpetual ideas and are considering one future for their hardware as a platform for art — maybe 20x200 and EO have a lot in common? With most people, saying "I can buy and sell you" is a boast about one's own ostensible net worth. With Mike Merrill, it's the literal truth. Mike is a publicly traded company, and shareholders can vote on the course his life takes, including how he pursues romantic interests. Shares in KMIKEYM have traded as high as $25 and typically change hands in a band of $5 to $10.
