This year's San Diego Comic-Con brought a lot of news. Possibly the most surprising and easily the most exciting was DC's announcement that The New Gods were coming back to comic shops and that their latest saga would be steered by writer Ram V and artist Evan Cagle. While these characters loom large over the DC universe, they've rarely carried a solo book for any significant amount of time. One reason for that might be that they're such pure Jack Kirby creations, and following in the King's footsteps is more than a challenge. If anyone is up for such a task, it's Ram V. The writer's first work within DC was on Swamp Thing, and he easily proved he could step into a beloved property and add a little of himself to it. He recognizes fans' preciousness toward Jack Kirby's Fourth World, but he equally understands how The New Gods could speak very much to the moment. We met with Ram V atop the DC booth on Saturday at San Diego Comic-Con. We begin our conversation with our love for all things Kirby and move toward parenthood, specifically fatherhood, and how it will thematically propel his take on The New Gods. What has Scott Free learned from his two dads, Darkseid and Highfather? SUBVERSIVE SUPERHEROES! This will actually be the first in a series of QTD episodes where we talk about some of the more...subversive takes on some of DC Comics greatest heroes. What happens when you're a war veteran, were in the CIA, saw some shit, decided to start making PTSD-inspired, superhero comics? This week we're talking about 2018's "MISTER MIRACLE" by Hugo award winning writer - and ex-CIA officer - Tom King and artist Mitch Gerads ... the same team behind “the Sherrif of Babylon.”.Mister Miracle is an ambitious new take on one of Jack Kirby's most beloved New Gods - and his dysfunctional family. Mister Miracle is about SCOTT FREE, the son of the Highfather - a good-guy demi-god who rules over New Genesis To make the peace in an all out war amongst gods of good and evil, Scott is traded at birth with the Highfather's opposite - the stone cold evil that is Darkseid of Apokolips (pretty much DC's version of Thanos before Marvel ripped off DC). Growing up a nameless youth, Scott is tortured. But along the way, he becomes a master escape artist (escaping “Scott Free”), finds love in the fiery pits of Apokolips, becomes the superhero "Mister Miracle" and and moves to earth to join the Justice League with his new wife Big Barda,...and domestic bliss ensues. it's basically a pleasant rom-com of a comic! …OK, not really, this is some PTSD-laden shit, and one of the best new comics we’ve read in awhile…and a great book to kick off our “Subversive Superheroes” series...

New Gods #7, "The Pact", is generally considered to be one of the greatest comics Jack Kirby ever created. in this 28-minute podcast, Jason and Amr talk about Kirby's technological sublime, the terrors of World War II, and the religious transformation of Izaya into Highfather.
