2021 – the year that Joe Biden replaced Donald Trump, took international troops out of Afghanistan, and the Taliban swept back to power. The final Sitrep of the year examines the key events of the last twelve months, and what they mean for the UK and the world.Britain's first carrier strike group deployment in a decade, HMS Defender's run-in with Russia in the Black Sea, and the defence review that shrinks the Army again but promises new high-tech planes and vehicles in years to come.So who has had a good year, and who's had a bad one? And what can the world expect in 2022?
From September 10 – 16, ZAPAD 2021—a major Russian military exercise that includes thousands of troops—will take place in and around Belarus. The exercise follows months of reports that the Russian military has been involved in actions that potentially could spark a major and violent confrontation between Russia and other countries, including a March deployment by Moscow of some 100,000 new troops in and around Ukraine and a June incident in the Black Sea in which Russian forces seemingly faced off against the British destroyer HMS Defender. In this episode, Lt. General Ben Hodges (Ret.) analyzes whether these developments represent a major escalation and imminent conflict with Russia; whether they are part of a deliberate, coordinated strategy by the Kremlin; and what, if any, guardrails could prevent Russian aggression against its neighbors or a direct conflict with NATO.
In the twelfth episode of Geostrategy360, Viktorija speaks to our Associate Fellow Dr. Mark Galeotti - an expert on modern Russia and its security and politics - and James Rogers, our Director of Research and expert in Britain's geostrategic power. They discuss the incident involving HMS Defender in the Black Sea and how Russia views the region.

In this episode, the panel discuss the fast-evolving security environment in the Black Sea region, including the significance of the recent confrontation between the UK warship HMS Defender and Russia's armed forces in waters off Crimea. Dr Dmitri Gorenburg, Senior Research Scientist at CNA in the US, and Dr Maryna Vorotnyuk, RUSI Research Fellow, discuss how security relations have shifted around the Black Sea following Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea and the subsequent build-up of regional military forces with host Dr Neil Melvin, Director RUSI International Security Studies.
On June 23, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that it fired "warning shots" and dropped bombs to deter a British Royal Navy destroyer, accusing the warship of violating Russia's state border in the Black Sea. In turn, the British authorities denied both of these claims, while maintaining that the ship, HMS Defender, was conducting "innocent passage through Ukrainian territorial waters" near the Russian-annexed Crimean Peninsula. The British Defense Ministry added that the crew had been made aware of Russian training exercises in the area. However, a BBC defense correspondent on board HMS Defender reported that there was firing, though it appeared to be out of range of the ship.
Two weeks ago tensions bubbled up in the Black Sea as a British warship, HMS Defender, sailed through Ukrainian waters and encountered Russian forces. What really happened during those 36 minutes? A top-secret 50-page document belonging to Britain's Ministry of Defence, found behind a bus stop by a member of the public, reveals that Britain knew all along that sailing a Royal Navy warship off the coast of Crimea would provoke Russia, but did it anyway to avoid looking scared of president Vladimir Putin. You'll remember Russia described the incident as a dangerous provocation while the Brits said it was all a storm in a teacup! Question is, who's telling the truth?

Vladimir Putin has accused the UK and US of “provocation” following the incident involving HMS Defender. Last week, The Royal Navy warship was shadowed by Russian vessels and buzzed by jets as it sailed through the disputed waters around Crimea near the Russian Black Sea Fleet headquarters in Sevastopol. The Russian president claimed there was US involvement in the operation, with an American plane sent to monitor Moscow's response. Moscow claimed that warning shots were fired by Russian vessels at the destroyer as it passed through the contested part of the Black Sea on June 23 – an assertion dismissed by the UK Government, which said only that a routine “gunnery exercise” took place. During a marathon live call-in show on Russian television, Mr Putin said “I don't think we were on the brink of World War Three” but the incident “was a provocation”. Will this mean that we are already in a conflict with Russia - one that's even more intense than the Cold War and could this one get hotter? Andy Bell speaks with former Europe minister in the Labour Government and now Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Russia, Chris Bryant. Mr Bryant talks us through the relationship between Russia and Britain since Vladimir Putin took power. "Cordial but robust" is how Chris would describe the relationship Britain should have with Russia. "We are already in conflict," he points out and there is a "semi warfare going on already" but he doesn't think Britain and Russia will end up shooting artillery at one another.
Today on TruNews, host Edward Szall and the team dig into the present realization that the COVID pandemic and vaccine rollout may be a racist bio-weapon developed and implemented by China. Together they look at the history of ‘ethno-bombs' tying apartheid states such as Israel and South Africa into the elimination of races. The team also looks at the Russian response to continued NATO aggression in Crimea, saying he ready to sink sinks such as the HMS Defender. Rick Wiles, Edward Szall, Doc Burkhart. Blustering Boris Johnson almost provoked a major war over an infantile desire to continue poking and prodding Russia in its own backyard. This time the war was averted, but what about next time? Will the adults ever be in charge?
Gerald Horne, professor of history at the University of Houston, author, historian, and researcher, joins us to discuss Syria and Iraq. US forces in Syria come under intense rocket attack as Iraqi, and Syrian militias declare open war on occupation forces. Meanwhile, the Iraqi government calls Biden's bombing attacks blatant and unacceptable violations of sovereignty.Scott Ritter, former UN weapon inspector in Iraq, joins us to discuss the UK provocation in the Black Sea. Leaked or lost documents show that the British government lied about their provocation off the coast of Crimea. There was significant opposition to Prime Minister Boris Johnson's plan for a military confrontation with Russia and the story that was released was contradicted by several sources, including the BBC reporter that was placed on the HMS Defender.Linwood Tauheed, associate professor of economics at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, joins us to discuss President Biden's bipartisan infrastructure bill. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) wants to detach the bipartisan part of the infrastructure agreement from the parts of the project that will be pushed through the reconciliation process. Also, our guest expounds upon the concept of asset recycling and how the process works in favor of powerful corporations. Joe Lauria, editor-in-chief at Consortium News, joins us to talk about Julian Assange and Mike Gravel. Long-time peace advocate and retired Senator Mike Gravel has passed away at the age of 91. Also, we review a Counterpunch article in which Julian Assange is discussed in the context of current threats against the First Amendment.Dan Lazare, investigative journalist and author of "America's Undeclared War," joins us to discuss Iran. President Biden met with the Israeli president and promised him that Iran would not get a nuclear weapon. Also, Biden said that the recent bombing of Iraqi and Syrian resistance groups was meant as a message to Iran. Is Biden deliberately sabotaging the nuclear negotiations?Mahder Tella, data scientist and strategic planner for the Tigray Action Committee, joins us to discuss Ethiopia. Reports are that the interim government of Ethiopia's Tigray region has fled, and that rebel fighters have advanced into the region's capital. K.J. Noh, writer and peace activist, joins us to talk about the "rules-based order." Our guest speaks about a recent article in Responsible Statecraft in which the claims of a rules-based order are examined. The article posits that “since the ‘rules-based order' is never adequately defined, America's claim to uphold it can never be disproved.”Mark Sleboda, Moscow-based international relations security analyst, joins us to discuss Belarus. The Western regime change attempt in Belarus has backfired, as leaders of the Eastern European nation have announced that they are cutting ties with the EU and further integrating their tax and economic system with Russia.
Text by Sylvia HuiSensitive defence documents containing details about the British military have been found at a bus stop in England, the BBC reports. The papers included plans for a possible UK military presence in Afghanistan, as well as discussion about the potential Russian reaction to the British warship HMS Defender's travel through waters off the Crimean coast last week, the BBC said. The broadcaster said a member of the public who wanted to remain unnamed contacted it when they found the pile of documents — about 50 pages in all — in a soggy heap on Tuesday behind a bus stop in Kent, southeast of London. The Ministry of Defence said an employee had reported the loss of the documents last week. It did not provide details about the incident or confirm the documents were found at a bus stop."The Ministry of Defence was informed last week of an incident in which sensitive defence papers were recovered by a member of the public," it said in a statement."The department takes the security of information extremely seriously and an investigation has been launched."It would be inappropriate to comment further."John Healey, the defence spokesman for the opposition Labour Party, said the incident was both embarrassing and worrying."Ministers must be able to confirm to the public that national security has not been undermined, that no military or security operations have been affected and that the appropriate procedures are in place to ensure nothing like this happens again."The HMS Defender upset Russia's military on Wednesday when it sailed south of the Crimean Peninsula in a Black Sea area that Moscow claims as its territorial waters. Many nations, including the UK, do not accept Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea from Ukraine and consider that area to be Ukrainian waters.Russia said one of its warships fired warning shots in response to the destroyer's intrusion, but Britain denied that account and said the warship was not in Russian waters. The UK's Ministry of Defence said the ship was "conducting innocent passage through Ukrainian territorial waters in accordance with international law".The documents showed officials conducted high-level discussions before Wednesday's clash about how Russia may react if HMS Defender sailed close to Crimea, the BBC said.
A war of words between Moscow and London escalated on Thursday as both sides accused one another of giving inaccurate accounts of an incident involving a British warship and Russian forces in the Black Sea.Russia says it fired warning shots and dropped bombs in the path of HMS Defender on Wednesday as it sailed off the coast of the Crimea peninsula, accusing the Royal Navy destroyer of breaching its territorial waters. The United Kingdom disputed Russia's account, saying no warning shots were fired and no bombs were dropped but suggested a Russian gunnery exercise had been taking place in the area.British Prime Minister Boris Johnson told reporters that HMS Defender was acting legally in international waters and described the vessel's route as wholly appropriate.
