Do your kids have a great relationship with their grandparents? Family is everything, but not everyone realizes that. And if they do, sometimes it's already too late and regrets always come later. But if you can be more intentional with nurturing relationships within your family, you will be surprised by how everyone can uplift each other's lives. Cal Fussman has interviewed icons from the last 70 years. In this conversation, we had a heartfelt discussion around his personal wisdom as well as some insights that he gleaned from the wisdom of people he had interviewed such as Robert De Niro and George Foreman. Cal shares his insights into the loss of a parent and his wisdom around the importance of family.  Despite being a celebrity and being amongst celebrities, Cal reminds us that we each, at our core, have similar experiences. And so, this interview is less about glitz and more about those special moments. Hopefully, you're able to get Cal's insights and make them personal in your family and ensure your kids have a great relationship with their grandparents.  Every person has a story, they just have to be asked the right questions. As you think about the next family gathering, try to ask your grandparents or your parents about their early childhood, or a story about their first job, their first love, or their dreams. Cal also shares this fun family exercise that you can do with your family so everyone can practice the art of listening. The key to getting the right answers is by asking the right questions. Being able to ask perceptive questions can set you apart from everyone else, either at work or at home. If you want to know more about my insights into how to ask questions that are memorable and get better answers, join my free masterclass called How to Ask Wildly Perceptive Questions. Just go to www.melissallarena.com/questions. Learn how to better refine your question-asking skills, the psychology of asking questions, and the do's and don'ts of asking questions.  Share this episode with anyone living far away from their parents. In this conversation, Cal provides ideas on how you can ensure that there's a bridge between the generations. Enjoy this spectacular conversation! Cal Fussman's Biography For over four decades, Cal Fussman has interviewed hundreds of the world's most influential individuals: Muhammad Ali, Jack Welch, Mikhail Gorbachev, Serena Williams, Jeff Bezos, Jimmy Carter, Kobe Bryant, Richard Branson, and the list goes on.  Now, as a New York Times bestselling author, keynote speaker, world-renowned interviewer, and host of the Big Questions podcast, Fussman travels the world teaching the world's largest companies, universities, and associations about leadership, storytelling, innovation, teamwork, and more. When Cal speaks, you're listening to everyone he's ever interviewed – the lessons and stories from hundreds of world icons, all coming through one man in a fedora.  Over the past several years, Cal has delivered keynotes for industry-leading organizations including General Motors, Facebook, Pixar, Twitter, The Vanguard Group, Apple Music, Snapchat, Samsung, Turner Broadcasting, Vans, Lululemon, YPO, and Entrepreneur's Organization; universities like UCLA and Georgetown; and at conferences as far as South Africa and Kenya. After Cal spoke at Facebook, Chris Sanders in Global Marketing Solutions said: “We literally have people using the term, ‘Cal Question.' He has become a part of our culture.”  Born in Brooklyn, Fussman spent ten straight years traveling the world, swimming over 18-foot tiger sharks, rolling around with mountain gorillas in Rwanda, and searching for gold in the Amazon. He boxed against then-undefeated world champion Julio Cesar Chavez, won a James Beard award, and served as sommelier atop of the World Trade Center.  After having breakfast with broadcaster Larry King in Los Angeles nearly every day for 12 years and watching his three children go out into the world, he now lives in North Carolina with his wife. Highlights Courage: If you want to build a bridge between generations, take courage to evaluate your own relationship with your parents. Creativity: Go first for someone's heart. If you're trying to build a relationship with someone you feel is out of reach or preoccupied, think about a sincere question pertaining to matters of the heart. Curiosity: Be curious about the stories of your parents and grandparents. Ask more questions about their childhood or their first love or their dreams. Bond: Make sure that you bond your kids with your parents now. If there's a lot of physical distance between your kids and your parents, organize Zoom calls between them. Even if it's just for a few minutes, keep that bond growing.  Intentional: Most people want to go out with their family around them at home. But only 20% of people do go out that way.  Uplifting: Kids will help you in some way that you will never be able to predict. It's going to establish and fortify this bond so that when that time comes that your parents are coming close to death, your kids will be there in a way that's going to lift your parents' lives. Care: Over the next few years, America is going to become an older nation rather than a younger one. Older people are going to need more care, and we don't know if they're going to get it due to nurse shortage.  The middle of the sandwich generation: There's a lot of stress on the generation in the middle – those in between their parents and their kids. They have to take care of their parents and their kids and make everything work. And having your kids there to help out is going to be invaluable. Hope: There's an unspoken code that you want to make the person feel like they can live as long as they possibly can. And so, you don't want to take them down in any way. Treasure: Your kids are going to bring something else to the equation and it will give them something that they will have for the rest of their lives. It will be part of their upbringing.  Understanding: We're all going to be getting different messaging based on our relationship with our parents. But make sure every last conversation with them is the way they wanted to.  Unity: Families, where people don't get along, can be a completely different experience. But it's an opportunity to turn that experience into a place where the elders can see the kids, who've been fighting for many years, coming together. Legacy: Strengthening the basics is going to give the kids a sense of responsibility because they're going to be hooked up to their grandparents. It will be something they want to pass on to their own kids and can be passed on to their grandkids. Listen: If you're not carefully listening, then you're not taking in everything that's been given to you. If only for five minutes, you can give your family a face that's telling them that they could pour out anything they want to pour out, they're going to feel like they were listened to. Family exercise: Get two people and seat them across each other. Think of a song that everybody knows. With your knuckles, wrap out the melody of that song, and the person sitting across from you has to try and guess it. Then have everybody else in the room get directly behind the person who's knocking out the melody so they can look into the face of the person who's trying to guess it.  Links to continue to learn from: Website: https://www.calfussman.com  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/calfussman  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/calfussman  If you enjoyed this conversation, check out these episodes with similar themes: Episode 07: Former Starbucks and Nike advertising executive Michelle Ghilotti shares how she decided to process her grief over the loss of her mom and her brother.  Episode 11: Professor Sree Sreenivasan talks about the art of storytelling and that every person has a story – they just have to be asked the right questions. We all age, right? It’s a natural part of our life cycle. But unfortunately, we often fail to take advantage of the lifelong opportunities we are given to maximize our health and age gracefully, ensuring we remain healthy and active as we get into our later years. Dr. Nancy Rolnik, who has special expertise in sports, lifestyle, and regenerative medicine, understands that better than most. Her unique training gives her the knowledge to treat each patient holistically, combining the best of Western and Eastern medicine to help her patients recover and thrive. She is amongst a growing group of regenerative pioneers around the world aiming to help patients heal instead of using band-aids to control pain. Dr. Rolnik knows all too well the pain and suffering that comes from experiencing too many fitness-related injuries, so she easily empathizes with her patients and creates a whole-body treatment plan to help her patients recover from their injuries or reduce chronic pain without surgery or pain pills. There’s no cookie-cutter medicine at Remedy! Her goal is to safely and quickly get her patients back to the sports, workouts, and daily activities that make their lives full. Dr. Rolnik helps you stay healthy for life! Dr. Rolnik earned her BS in biochemistry from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, and attended medical school at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. She is board certified in family and sports medicine and has worked tirelessly over the past 20 years to advance her training, knowledge, and skills in lifestyle and regenerative medicine treatments to offer patients safe, effective, and state-of-the-art options for injury and pain management. Joining the show today, Dr. Rolnik and Kirsten discuss the best options for pain management, how health and wellness are vital for maintaining optimal function, and the steps you can take to implement a healthier lifestyle one improvement at a time. Whether you’re an athlete or daily workout junkie, or you experience wear-and-tear pain, this episode will help you recognize what you might be missing and help get you back on track. Highlights from Episode #032: Our body is the only true healer of pain. Modern medicine helps the process. Getting into the groove of a healthy lifestyle can be hard and overwhelming. Pick one thing you want to work on or improve, whether that is giving up soda or going for a walk every day at lunch, and master that. Then, once you have that down, add on something new. Tracking progress with a planner helps. We all need to take responsibility for our own health and wellness – there is no magic pill or program to make you healthy. Daily efforts to maintain or improve your health add up to a healthier life! Living to an advanced age with vitality requires a plan and consistency. Time-stamped Show Notes: 5:44 – How do you advise for pain management and chronic pain? 10:20 – How much is enough exercise for the average person? 14:42 – Dr. Rolnik shares an excellent tip for incorporating stretching into your routine. 16:11 – How can maintaining your fitness and wellness impact cognitive needs? 18:55 – How do you compare the health span to life span? 20:50 – What is an even more significant factor in maintaining overall health and wellness? 22:30 – Dr. Rolnik and Kirsten discuss inflammation and how to address that root cause. 25:05 – What are the most common foods that are inflammatory? 32:36 – Dr. Rolnik weighs in on whether coffee is good or bad for you. 36:46 – Kirsten and Dr. Rolnik break down the process of platelet-rich plasma Injections. Episode #032 Freebie: The Remedy Wheel of Hope There are various approaches to injury and pain management. Many depend on your efforts, and some depend on the advice and skills of healthcare professionals. The strategy that helps your knee pain, for instance, will look entirely different for someone else. Dr. Rolnik is providing Absolute Trust Talk listeners exclusive access to her resource, The Remedy Wheel of Hope. This pie chart breaks down eight different non-surgical factors that Dr. Rolnik uses in custom combinations to reduce pain and improve function without resorting to going under the knife or using opioids. Some people will improve simply with a few of these options without consulting with a physician, and others need to incorporate all of them in some form or fashion. Dr. Rolnik assesses each individual and formulates the best combination for success. Click here to download your FREE copy now.

Thank goodness for internet friends, you guys. AustinChanning Brown is a leading new voice on the intersection of racial justice, faith, and black womanhood. I recently read her book I'm Still Here: Black Dignity in a World Made for Whiteness  and let me tell you, it is covered with notes, highlighter, underlining, and all the things. It also made it to the top of Amazon's Top 20 Best Sellers list! Austininvites others into a dialogue through her writing, her speaking, and her workshops.    Beyonce and Faith • The first time I stalked Austinon Instagram and saw that she hosted a workshop on Beyonce and faith, I knewwe would be best friends. (Anyone else bummed they missed out on this?) •She hosted this workshop at a music and faith conference after realizing how much Lemonade was packed with faith.  • The visual album also shared the story of black womanhood in a major way. •"She didn't just kind of feature black women. She went all the way there."   I'm Still Here •When her book first came out, it went out to Amazon reviewers and the reviews were not pretty. • After her husband told her "Austin, would you change one word? Is there anything you would change to have this reviewer like the book?"she realized the answer was no. •The book allows white readers to confront some of their own behavior and allows black readers to maybe identify with parts of Austin's story.   Diversity v Reconciliation  •People play a numbers game with people of color, using them as "sprinkles" instead of bringing them in to the core. •This creates a guise of diversity when it remains wholly lacking in diversity where it counts. •"We are whole human beings." • The key to stopping the "token" behavior is bringing in black people who can change the culture that is catered to white people. •Austinremembers the chapel services at her university lacked the music and influence of other cultures. Instead of introducing a single black hymn, they brought in a pastor who could bring power and influence to the service.     Hope "There are places. There are moments. There are institutions. There are people for whom I'm hopeful. But if I broaden it out to the entire country, I have zero evidence that by the time my son is grown he won't have to deal with this."   •Even in the absence of hope for the country's eradication of racism, she puts in the work to bring about change. •She looks at photos of ancestors, some of whom were enslaved and feels a duty to them. •"I have work to do whether I feel great or not. That is my privilege. My privilege is being free."   On Being a Spokeswoman •There is an immense pressure put on black people to be the spokesperson for the entire community. •Her book focuses on her personal story as a black woman, but it invites others in the black community to share their experiences. •"It gives people a starting place as opposed to 'this is how it is'." •Paul Laurence Dunbar's We Wear the Mask is an important piece of work in Austin's life. She remembers a teacher who brought this work into the curriculum in a way she had never experienced. •She is grateful for the way he expected the white students who filled the class to unpack the poem, and it's themes the way she had been expected to do the same for white authors.  •She remembers being engaged in the work and feeling understood by the work, but her teacher never put on her the responsibility of sharing her thoughts with the class. •"He didn't make me the temporary substitute teacher on race." •To Hell With Good Intentions  outlines that good intentions are often based on assumptions. •"We don't suddenly become all about our race because you decided to introduce diversity into the class."   I'm Still Here •We, as a nation, place so much importance on our history, but fail to give everybody'sstory the same attention. "All of our stories are tied together at one point or another. When we go back to the beginning, it helps us understand how we got here." •We talk about the fear white people have being called racist. Years ago, they saw that as perfectly normal.     "When we embrace that we are still learning. That's the journey. We point out areas where we can go. We commit to it and we laugh that we haven't realized it before."   Y'all, this interview was full of so much wisdom and laughter. I hope it was transformative for you. Hope: There are few other words more important than hope. It can make the difference between overcoming or being overcome, moving forward or shrinking back, believing life can be better or falling into despair. Hope changes things. The problem with hope is that it is very difficult to measure on a graph. Therefore, hope rarely […]

Me he sorprendido.
