This week on the second biggest podcast in the Pacific Northwest behind only the Sasquatch Hunters, we celebrate our 1 Year Anniversary, recorded at Hopworks Urban Brewery, the Birthplace of The BOB, with Founder and Head Brewmaster, Christian Ettinger. Christian has been brewing beer for over 25 years and first experienced the brewpub as the center of the community while living abroad in Cologne Germany. Upon returning to the U.S., as the craft beer scene was exploding here in the Pacific Northwest, Christian knew by the age of 19 that he wanted to start this business. Combining the European style brewpub experience with the more modern craft brewing approach, Hopworks Urban Brewery opened in Portland, OR in 2007.  We already knew going into this episode that we loved Hopworks, and we were pleasantly surprised that Christian shares our love of quoting Seinfeld and movies, hope you have as much fun listening as we did recording.  Prost!   In this episode: People have been gathering around beer for the last 9000 years since the ice age receded.  The plural of Sasquatch is Sasquaii, the second "i" is silent.  Company culture starts with the founder and the things you stand for, and then build a team that is like minded and thoughtful.   A camel is a horse designed by committee B Corp provides a way to benchmark themselves and focus on local neighborhoods and environmental groups and to be profitable in a meaningful way, as well as spotlight areas where more work needs to be done.   The pandemic is a shared experience for all small businesses, but you have to get scrappy, be resourceful, surround yourself with great people, and really get back to basics.   Getting lean is about getting rid of dead weight and focusing on what can you reasonably accomplish yourself and what you need help with. Both are ok, but don't ever be all in one pot.      Guest Beers: Hopworks Urban Brewery - Portland, OR Abominable Winter Ale, 7.3% abv, 65 IBU "Abominable is a perfect blend of caramel malts and Simcoe, Azacca, and Centennial hops, creating a complex, spicy, and citrusy winter ale."   Hopworks Urban Brewery - Portland, OR Fresh Hop Abominable Winter Ale, 7.3% ABV, 65 IBU "You've never tasted Abominable like this before! Fresh Hop Abominable stays true to its namesake with fresh Centennial hops that add juicy notes of pine for a perfect PNW fresh hop ale."   Angie's Mystery Beer: Hopworks Urban Brewery - Portland, OR Fresh Hop Ace of Spades, Imperial IPA, 8.6 ABV, 100 IBU "This fresh hop beast is hopped out with Cascade, Centennial, Simcoe, Mosaic, and Amarillo hops to balance beautiful citrus notes, a dank fresh Strata hop addition, and a clean malt bitterness."   Episode Links: Hopworks Urban Brewery Beer Time  Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale Wyeast Labs B Corp Leed for Buildings Angie's Mystery Beer

Craft Brew News – 11/29/19(Stories Courtesy of Brewbound – www.brewbound.com)Hopworks Urban Brewery Opens Mug Club to Members of Closed Portland Breweries’ ClubsAfter a spate of craft breweries and cideries closing in the Portland, Oregon, Hopworks Urban Brewery announced it will extend its mug club membership to members of similar clubs at any now-closed businesses. The craft brewery also invited former workers to apply at its taprooms.Hopworks founder Christian Ettinger said in a press release “When we heard about the recent closures of Portland institutions, we felt a void in the community,” “A lot of livelihoods and social occasions are affected by these closings, and we want to help, whether it’s honoring closed establishments’ mug clubs or helping people who have lost their jobs get back on their feet.”Former employees of closed businesses are invited to apply for jobs at Hopworks’ locations in Portland and Vancouver, Washington. The offer is valid through December 31 and provides consumers with 21 oz. pours for the cost of 16 oz. pours and 10% off merchandise and growler fills. In the past year, Portland has seen the following businesses close: Cider Riot, Coalition Brewing, Rock Bottom Brewery & Restaurant, Lompoc, Bridgeport and Burnside. Widmer Brothers, Portland Brewing and Alameda closed taproom locations, though their brands continue.Asahi Bets Big on BeerAsahi Group Holdings has doubled down on acquisitions of breweries outside its home market of Japan.CEO Akiyoshi Koji told reporters that his goal is for Asahi to lead the premium beer segment in every market it’s in, according to a report on Yahoo Finance. Koji helped propel his company to growth through a blockbuster $11 billion deal in July to acquire Melbourne, Australia’s Carlton & United Breweries from Anheuser-Busch. Under Koji, Asahi has spent more than $20 billion making other acquisitions across the globe. These moves are antithetical compared to how other global brewers are facing beer’s slowdown; many, such as Constellation Brands, are expanding into industries like cannabis or launching different beverage products like hard seltzers.Minnesota Remains Last State for 3.2 BeerMinnesota remains the last state in the nation to limit beer sales at grocery and convenience stores to beer with an alcohol by weight (ABW) of 3.2% or lower, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.Earlier this month, Utah loosened its laws to permit sales of beer that’s 4% ABW (about 5% alcohol by volume), leaving Minnesota as the last 3.2 beer state.Shady Oak Barrel House Under Fire for Derogatory PG&E Beer NameSanta Rosa, California-based brewpub Shady Oak Barrel House was overwhelmed with negative online reviews and phone calls from consumers after it named a beer “Fuck PG&E” to disparage executives of Pacific Gas & Electric, the utility company whose lines have allegedly sparked wildfires in California over the past several years.Negative reviews poured in from public utility employees and their supporters from across the country who took umbrage with the name. Shady Oak Barrel House posted an apology letter to its Facebook page last week, explaining the intent behind the name.“The name was not intended to go after honest hard-working people that have been and still currently are helping our community,” the post said. “It is not to undercut or attack those that have been away from their families in order to serve others in times of recent disasters. The name doesn’t suggest anything remotely like this; however, some people chose to read it this way.”To combat the deluge of one-star ratings, Shady Oak Barrel House has offered to discount beer purchases by $1 for any customers who leave “an honest Yelp, Google or Facebook review.”PG&E was found to be at fault by Cal Fire for 2018’s Camp Fire, which killed 85 people and destroyed nearly 20,000 structures, and is facing trial for its role in the 2017 Stubbs Fire, and is being questioned about last month’s Kincaid Fire, according to SFGate.Craft Beer Storm Website: www.craftbeerstorm.com If your Company, Hotel or Restaurant wants to book a CraftBeer Weekend or Craft Beer Evening for your guests or employees send an email to Michael@craftbeerstorm.com Linked In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/craft-beer-storm-podcast-30776075/Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2Support ACS In NYC MarathonI ran the NYC Marathon through the American Cancer Society and I am aiming to raise $32,000 ($3,200 Minimum X 10X) - please follow link below to donate what you can - $25, $50, $30K! - Onward... - Here is link –http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?fr_id=94035&pg=personal&px=49477898&fbclid=IwAR2mBEvhF1wMA_BbHPhkavichNSFrE9Y9gi2RVZzfQ_4Da5Sht7gvH9rY_k*** A Top 20 Podcast in Food on iTunes ***Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NH*** Interested in starting your own brewery? Hopworks was founded in 2007 by Christian Ettinger, their Brewmaster. He started brewing in his parent’s kitchen during his first summer break in college and it didn’t take long to decide he would open his own brewpub. Christian began his career at the Eugene City Brewery, where many of Oregon’s great brewers have had their start. He completed Intensive Brewing and Science and Engineering courses from the American Brewers Guild and was awarded the World Beer Cup Champion Brewmaster while brewing at Laurelwood Pub and Brewery in Portland. Blueberry Milkshake IPA has a velvety texture from an abundance of wheat and oats, along with berry-forward Galaxy and Vic Secret hops for flavor and aroma. The beer is then fermented on mounds of blueberries and added lactose for extra body and sweetness. Welcome back to another installment of the Oregon Brewery Running Series Podcast. Inspiring Oregonians to Get Active, Have Fun, and Give Back. We host family-friendly, 5K fun runs that start and end at some of Oregon's best breweries. In today's show, Nathan reflects on our 2017 season, thank a bunch of people who made it happen and hear from a few of our participants. We'll also give you a sneak peek into the 2018 season! 2017, By The Numbers In 2017, we hosted 18, 5k fun runs, at 16 different breweries. We were at Portland Brewing twice (once for the Hoppy Earth Day Brewfest), and at two of the Hopworks locations (Powell and Vancouver). In 2017, we had 2,061 participants, and based on our best guessitmation, nearly 1,300 different people ran at least one event, meaning, a whole bunch of you ran more than one. People like Kim C, Kim W, Mark (there are three of them, you know who you are), Robert, Chris, Bill, and Laura (to name a few), ran in 5 or more events, which is pretty impressive. We also kept track of the number of pints of beer you all drank, or at least the ones we purchased. Between all participants, volunteers, partners and our musical guests, that number is, approximately, 2,466. You also ran 5,111 miles or 8225.4K. We raised just over $4,000 for the Oregon Brewshed Alliance, The Portland Parks Foundation, and Life Vest Inside. Thank you for making our second season such a memorable one. The participants, you, are indeed an inspiration. Hearing some of your stories helped Drew and I realized the diverse backgrounds we all have. From those working in the medical profession to creative types, teachers, lawyers, insurance providers, entrepreneurs, active military personnel and so many more. We all share a deep love for running and beer. But it's not really about the beer and running for us. It's about bringing people together as part of a community. Many of our participants ran their very first organized 5K this year, and we feel so honored they did so with us. Whether or not they run in a whole bunch more of our events, we hope that running and being active becomes a lifestyle for all of you. We also know that some of you are hardcore runners, doing other timed races in the area. We appreciate you too and love that you chose one of our events to take it easy for a day. We hope that bringing together these two different types of runners inspires everyone to stay active, have fun, and give back as we all discover and enjoy the intricacies of craft beer in this great state of ours. After our last event of 2017 at Stickmen Brewing in Tualatin, Oregon on November 11, I walked around and interviewed some of our participants. I wanted to get a sense of why they decided to spend a Saturday morning with us. Here are a few of my favorite quotes: It's laid back, low key, no pressure! Running and beer...what else is there to say? Easy way to get back into running after an injury. Feel like family..like that it's a small group of people. It's just really fun! And a lot more, so listen now!

Our name may lead you to believe it's all about beer and running, but that's just how we accomplish it. We get people active by hosting 5K fun runs that start and end at great breweries. These are family-friendly events where people can run as fast or as slow as they want. It doesn't matter, partially because it's not timed, but also because the idea is just to get your body moving. A lot of good comes from that. The second thing, having fun, also doesn't need an explanation. Yes, our runs involved craft beer from some of the best breweries in Oregon and now Southwest Washington, but the fun doesn't simply come from what's in your pint glass. There's something inherently enjoyable about getting together with like-minded people. Runners and craft beer enthusiasts are some of the nicest folks you'll meet. The runners high is real, and we have a blast celebrating the accomplishment of finishing a 3.1 mile run by pairing good beer with great people. The third thing, giving back, is less obvious, but no less important to us. When Drew and I started this in the summer of 2016, it was important to us that we partner with non-profit organizations doing good in and for our community. We wanted to help, to give back to the great communities we live in. Currently, 10% of our proceeds go to help the work of The Oregon Brewshed Alliance through Oregon Wild, and also the Portland Parks Foundation, the fundraising arm of the incredible Portland Park and Rec department. We're proud to announce a third non-profit partner. Life Vest Inside is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that inspires, empowers and educates people of all backgrounds to lead a life of kindness. Today on the Oregon Brewery Running Series podcast, you'll get to hear my conversation with Jason Hattrick, a local volunteer for Live Vest. He's also a Kindness Ambassador and a Dance for Kindness Group Leader. We talk about the movement that is Life Vest Inside, what exactly Kindness is, why all of us need more of it in our lives, and a few tips for quickly showing the next person you see a random act of kindness. We'd love to invite you to one of our next 5K fun runs that start and end at great breweries in Oregon and now a few in Southwest Washington. November 4 we'll be at the Hopworks location in Vancouver, and next week, November 11, we'll be in Tualatin at Stickmen Brewing. Use promo code LVI5, for Life Vest Inside to save $5 on your entry. Hopworks Urban Brewery, based in Portland, Oregon, believes that creating world-class beer and food doesn't have to come at the expense of maximizing profit over sustainability. They believe in using business practices that improve the environment and inspire the community. And that's more than just a marketing thing. Their founder, owner, and brewmaster, Christian Ettinger, believes deeply in the idea of using beer as a source for good. Christian asks himself, What do I need to make a respectable living, to treat my employees and the external community properly, and not pillage the planet while sourcing? Today on the show, I'm talking with Christian Ettinger, from Hopworks Brewery. I sat down with Christian over a few beers, three to be exact, a while back, and got to know more about his passion for creating world-class sustainably produced beer and doing good for people and the planet. In this episode of the Oregon Brewery Running Series Podcast, we'll dig into how he became interested in beer at a young age, and some of the ways Hopworks is utilizing their platform to invest into green initiatives. We will also chat about the organizational culture at Hopworks, and perhaps most importantly, listen to Christian describe the flavor profiles of the beer we tasted, and where those ingredients come from, so keep listening! Before we get to all that, however, here's a plug to signup for our next 5K fun run! We're going to be running at the Hopworks location in Vancouver Washington on Saturday, November 4th. This week on Fuhmentaboudit!, Chris and Mary invite some brewers to the studio all the way from Portland, Oregon. We have Ben Edmunds from Breakside Brewery, Mike Wright and Josh Grgas from Commons Brewery, and Christian Ettinger from Hopworks Urban Brewery. These brewers tell us all about the city of Portland, which has around 180 breweries – that’s 1 brewery for around every 3,000 people! This program has been sponsored by GreatBrewers.com. “We let that yeast speak loudly in our beers, and the hops and the malt are a little more reserved.” Mike Wright on Fuhmentaboudit!
