She is lighter, happier, wiser, and more anchored on the other side of her 5 months in Granada, Spain. Listen to the end as there are lots of good nuggets. No pasa nada, dear people. x

Sam Lamott is an artist, writer, and host of the How To Human podcast, which explores how to acquire the psychological skills needed to thrive as an adult. How To Human was featured on Itunes New and Noteworthy as well as Apple's top 200 podcasts in both Health and Self Help. Sam is also owner of Square 1 Studio in San Anselmo California and founder of Hello Humans, a platform for storytellers to share their trials and capture the truth of what it means to be human. He is also co-author of the New York Times bestseller, Some Assembly Required. Sam describes himself as a single dad, college drop-out, and ex-meth head, who, at the age of twenty two, came out of a ten-year bender with severe clinical depression, a two-year-old child, and zero life skills. He knows that life is more than what we show the world on social media, that it's often much messier, but that the lessons learned from those messes are as valuable as anything on this adventure and creation of being human. Additionally, in the time we at Cutting For Sign have known and and collaborated with Sam, he has proven to be dogged in his commitment to both self betterment and the projects that have captured him. He's become a friend, someone we can call for personal or professional support, and a fierce advocate for the transformation of the primordial energies we find ourselves steeped within, into the woven gold we call story. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/cutting-for-sign/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/cutting-for-sign/support

Have you been moving so fast that you've left people in your wake? Has social media jaded your heart with regard to compassion? Do you typically judge first or love first? Amanda Valantine is back with a new episode of Hope Worth Repeating featuring Carlos Whittaker's new book, “How to Human: Three Ways to Share Life Beyond What Distracts, Divides, and Disconnects Us".Whittaker's book meets us in a post-pandemic society that is very disconnected and distracted. But as Jon Acuff said about the book in his New York Times review, Whittaker has served up “an antidote to what ails us.”Whether you are feeling disillusioned by the lack of compassion in the world pr are feeling fatigued by the incessant distractions and devices, this book will speak to you. How can we show up in any and all relationships from accountability and empowerment and less from control and judgment? Whether we stay or go is up to us but how we show up in the relationship is where our greatest power and growth resides. See you on the inside! x

Today I talk with Sam Lamott, the creator of the podcast, "How To Human" about...getting to know Sam Lamott. Really, this is an episode about friendship and what it takes to make friends: the defenses, expectations and projections--and all of that coming from two directions at once. A few other topics we will cover: body dysmorphia, missing fathers, mentorship, addiction, and what it means to live, or not live, in the future. Lastly, we will also discuss our upcoming business venture—an audio video production company in Marin county. "It's okay to withhold trust and make it be something earned; it's also beautiful to give somebody a ton of trust from the start and let them have something that they can lose." — Sam Lamott is the host of the How To Human podcast (which has reached over a million listeners) where today he interviews guests like Brené Brown on how to acquire the psychological skills needed to be a functioning, thriving adult. Sam also co-wrote the New York Times bestseller, "Some Assembly Required" with his mother, author Anne Lamott. Part Two of this conversation is all about relationships, specifically romantic. Sam outlines how to set a boundary with anyone, and how freedom and sacrifice show up in both healthy and toxic relationships. If you haven't listened to Part One yet, skip back one episode to hear the whole thing, or listen here. "I have this critic inside that is so abusive... but what's its motivation? It doesn't want me to get attacked from the outside so it's willing to attack me from the inside. That's when it's time to invite the critic to the table and say, 'I know you want me to make great work, but you can't speak to me that way — you're in my house.'" Sam Lamott describes himself as a “single dad, college drop-out, ex-meth head who came out of a ten-year bender at the age of 22 with severe clinical depression, a two-year-old, and zero life skills.” So he started the How To Human podcast where today he interviews guests like Brené Brown on how to acquire the psychological skills needed to be a functioning adult. Sam is also the co-author of the New York Times bestseller, "Some Assembly Required," which he co-wrote with his mother, author Anne Lamott. Sam and I ended up talking for over an hour, so we split the conversation up into two episodes. In this episode (Part One), Sam and I talk about how your inner critic is actually trying to protect you, how physical symptoms can indicate unresolved internal conflict, and why the "starving artist" mentality can be so detrimental when it comes to your relationship with money. Sam Lamott is the creator of the Hello Humans website and How To Human podcast. If you like this podcast you should definitely check his out as well! He’s had many wonderful guests including Brené Brown, Byron Katie and his mom Anne Lamott. In this conversation, we get deep real fast. I love that Sam speaks so openly and honestly about his story. He talks about being the sensitive kid who didn’t feel like he belonged. About being an addict and getting sober at 22. On being a young dad. Learning how to live well with depression. On getting past envy, and how to keep going, even when you feel like a failure. He also tells us how pain has been his biggest teacher, and we talk about how the smallest moments of kindness can make a major impact on ourselves and others. If you’ve struggled with any kind of addiction, I think it will be especially powerful for you to hear Sam’s story, but no matter who you are or what you’re going through, you will find plenty of wisdom, comfort and inspiration throughout the episode.Where to Find Sam/Hello Humans:Sam on InstagramHello Humans InstagramTwitterHello Humans WebsiteThis episode was audio produced by Aaron Moring. Welcome to How To Human! In today's episode we explore the importance of dreaming and utopian thinking, and it is so important for us human beings.
This episode, recorded May 19, is packed full of flavor. The WASH ladies saw "I Feel Pretty" and it's just...UGH. Also, England has a POC Princess and the ceremony has a lot of cool African American shit in it. Well done, Meghan Markle. The Fat-Phobic disaster comes from England where some ad in the tube says that being fat causes cancer. Oh yeah? PROVE IT. Turns out most studies are being funded by people who have an agenda. The Body Politics Win this week is DOGS!!! The Feminist Forum features Dr. Tyndall and his culture of rape at USC. Recommendations! Slow Burn by Kacey Musgraves is sooo good. Also check out How To Human podcast. Lastly, go listen to the On Being w/ Krista Tippett episode that was filmed at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum's Global Forum.
