A pilot with many hours of experience and an instructor rating died following the bad decision to fly his newly purchased airplane without first understanding how the aircraft systems operate. He also did not review the logbooks or have the plane looked over after 10 years sitting idle. The pilot had purchased a Piper PA-30 Twin Comanche. Key facts in the NTSB report and public docket show that the pilot did not have a pre-buy inspection, was not familiar with the aircraft's systems, and ignored the advice of his friend and former CFI to not fly.The pilot knew about a landing gear indication light problem before takeoff. He proceeded without resolving it or reviewing the appropriate emergency procedures for operating the landing gear. The plane stalled and crashed while he tried to troubleshoot the issue in flight. In this analysis with John Goglia and Todd Curtis, Greg Feith shares that he is currently in the process of buying a used airplane. Like the accident pilot, the aircraft has not flown in several years. Unlike the accident pilot, he is working closely with an experienced mechanic to make the aircraft airworthy and to examine all systems on the aircraft.Greg is frustrated with the quality of the decisions made by the pilot before and during the flight. He's further critical of the NTSB's analysis of this accident. The probable cause statement focuses on a stall that happened at the end of the flight rather than all the pilot actions before and during the flight.“[The NTSB probably cause statement is] so vanilla. It is such a cop-out,” Greg says. This accident is a result of poor aeronautical decision-making by the pilot and the actions of others around the pilot who failed to assert proper safety practices. Season 5, Episode 230 Local Alaska Pilots and the National Guard Saved a Family from a Frozen Lake The Heart-Stopping Rescue of a Pilot and His Daughters on Alaska's Kenai Peninsula According to the Associated Press and OutdoorLife.com, a dramatic rescue unfolded on Alaska's Kenai Peninsula this week after a pilot and his two daughters were stranded for hours on the wing of their half-sunken plane in a frozen lake. The family's plane, a Piper PA-12 Super Cruiser, crashed Sunday evening during a sightseeing trip. As night fell, the pilot and his daughters, who have not been identified, were forced to cling to the wing of the plane, waiting in the freezing cold for help. It wasn't long before the tight-knit community of Alaska's bush pilots sprang into action. When the plane was first reported missing, local pilots immediately rallied to join the search. By Monday morning, a group of volunteers, including pilot Terry Godes, took to the skies in their own planes, hoping to spot the wreckage. Godes, who had seen a Facebook post about the missing family, was the first to spot the plane, with the family waving from the wing, signaling they were still alive. After Godes radioed in the location, the Alaska State Troopers and National Guard were quickly alerted. The National Guard sent in a C-130 transport plane and a helicopter for the rescue operation, but conditions were challenging. The ice was too soft to land on, and the rotor wash threatened to blow the children off the wing. Despite these difficulties, the National Guard performed a flawless, one-of-a-kind recovery, saving the family from the icy wilderness. The pilot and his daughters were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The rescue, which involved the quick thinking and coordination of local pilots, the Alaska State Troopers, and the National Guard, was a testament to the strength of Alaska's community and the courage of those who risked their lives to bring a family home safely. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Muslim militants kill 9 in Congo, Africa Muslim militants from the Allied Democratic Forces, a terrorist group, launched a brutal assault in North Kivu, Congo, Africa on March 8th, killing at least nine people, reports International Christian Concern. The attack began at dawn, catching villagers by surprise. Armed with guns and machetes, the Muslims targeted the farming community, swiftly overpowering the residents. The assault, which included the destruction of homes, left dozens of families displaced, worsening an already dire humanitarian crisis in the region. Eastern Congo remains plagued by violence, with more than 100 armed groups vying for control of the region's valuable resources. The innocent civilians continue to bear the heaviest cost. Despite repeated calls for action, the Congo government has been unable to protect its citizens from these frequent raids. According to Open Doors, Congo, Africa is the 35th most dangerous country worldwide for Christians. King Charles hospitalized from cancer treatment side effects Buckingham Palace has confirmed that King Charles III was taken to the hospital in a car yesterday after suffering predictable side effects from his cancer treatment, reports The U.S. Sun. He has had to cancel a string of engagements set for today in Birmingham, England. And he was unable to greet Ambassadors of three different nations yesterday. Trump affirmed two God-given genders, opposition to transgenderism President Donald Trump criticized gender ideology during a recent Women's History Month event held at the White House on March 25th. He reaffirmed the two genders created by God. TRUMP: “On Day One, I made the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders: male and female. Is there anybody that disagrees with that in this room? (laughter) I was thinking, maybe somebody from the press might raise their head. I don't think so. “For four long years, we had an administration that tried to abolish the very concept of womanhood and replace it with radical gender ideology. They destroyed women's spaces and even tried to replace the word ‘mother' with the term ‘birther person.' A mother became a ‘birther person.' “Under the Trump administration, we're ending the Marxist war on women, and we're protecting women's rights, defending women's dignity, and standing up for the American moms and daughters.” Trump also made a definitive statement about men who pretend to be women. TRUMP: “No matter how many surgeries you have or chemicals you inject, if you're born with male DNA in every cell of your body, you can never become a woman! You're not going to be a woman. (applause) And that's why, last month, I proudly signed a historic Executive Order to ban men from competing in women's sports. And it was very popular.” Trump withdraws Stefanik's nomination to be U.N. Ambassador President Donald Trump has withdrawn the nomination of Republican Congresswoman Elise Stefanik of New York to be U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, reports The Epoch Times. Trump announced the move on Truth Social on March 27th, citing the narrow majority that the GOP has in the House of Representatives. He wrote, “As we advance our America First Agenda, it is essential that we maintain EVERY Republican Seat in Congress. I have asked Elise, as one of my biggest Allies, to remain in Congress to help me deliver Historic Tax Cuts, GREAT Jobs, Record Economic Growth, a Secure Border, Energy Dominance, Peace Through Strength, and much more, so we can MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN. With a very tight Majority, I don't want to take a chance on anyone else running for Elise's seat.” Trump said Stefanik will join his administration in the future. Manhattan's Planned Parenthood closes after years of pro-life prayer After years of monthly prayer processions, often led by a pro-life activist priest named Fidelis Moscinski, Planned Parenthood of Greater New York has announced it will be selling its SoHo building and shutting down its Manhattan abortion mill, reports LifeSiteNews.com. Wendy Stark, the New York abortion giant CEO, claimed the decision was made due to “the gap between inflation and stagnant (Medicaid/insurance) reimbursement rates.” Christian pro-lifers, like David who fought Goliath, know that you cannot continue to mock the living God and expect to be victorious. Psalm 34:16 says, “The face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to cut off the memory of them from the Earth.” Three survivors of Alaskan plane crash rescued And finally, fearing the worst after a prop plane was reported overdue for landing in Alaska last Sunday, search and rescue volunteers searched for the pilot and two children of elementary and middle school ages who had been on a sightseeing tour, reports Good News Network. Dale Eicher was one of the locals who heard the call for help. EICHER: “I saw the Facebook post about the missing plane and decided to go look for it.” Providentially, that singular Facebook post about the missing father and kids had been re-shared 420 times. John Morris, the father of the missing pilot, told CNN affiliate, Alaska's News Source, that his son's cell phone sent its final ping at about 5:00 p.m. Sunday evening over Tustumena Lake. Within an hour of flying, Eicher saw them. EICHER: “They were walking across the lake when I flew over the plane.” The Piper PA-12 Super Cruiser had crash landed on the frozen surface of Tustumena Lake. EICHER: “I was really shocked. I did expect that we would find them, but I didn't expect that we would find them alive, for sure. I've done a little bit of search and rescue before, and it doesn't always turn out this well.” The three survivors were taken to a Kenai Peninsula area hospital and treated for “non-life-threatening injuries.” When the reporter asked what motivated Dale Eicher to search for the missing plane, he said this. EICHER: “It's the right thing to do. I do volunteer with the Civil Air Patrol some. And I have my own plane.” Indeed, it was the right thing to do! After all, as Genesis 1:27 articulates, each of us, including those three plane crash survivors in Alaska, have been created in God's image and are worthy of rescuing. Max talks about the NTSB's final report on the fatal crash of a Piper PA-28-140 in Moab, Utah, in October 2023. The crash killed a North Dakota State Senator, his wife, and their two children. The probable cause was spatial disorientation due to somatogravic illusion, leading to controlled flight into terrain. Despite being an experienced military helicopter pilot with over 2,000 flight hours, the pilot had limited fixed-wing and night-flying experience. The crash occurred on a dark night with no moon, conditions that significantly increase accident risk. ADS-B data shows the aircraft climbed slightly, then turned right while accelerating, ultimately descending into terrain. Max explains how somatogravic illusion can mislead pilots into believing they are climbing when they are actually level or descending. He discusses night flying risks, noting that while only about 5% of personal flights occur at night, 20% of fatal accidents do. He emphasizes better planning, including avoiding night takeoffs when possible, delaying turns until reaching a safe altitude, and using a disciplined instrument scan to prevent fixation. He also suggests time-saving strategies like using food delivery services to avoid unnecessary delays that push departures into nighttime conditions. A fatal Piper PA-28-300 plane crash was caused by a loose fuel line that should never have been installed on the aircraft. The NTSB investigation of the fatal May 2018 crash shows that a fuel line that was not approved for use on that aircraft led to an engine fire. Todd Curtis and John Goglia examine the details. Although the fuel line used was an approved aviation part, it was not approved for use in this aircraft. The NTSB could not determine who installed the part or when it was installed.Approved parts used in unapproved ways is an ongoing issue in aviation. Some individuals in the general aviation community even promote the use of auto parts instead of more expensive approved aviation parts.John, who worked on FAA committees on the issue of unapproved parts in the 1980s, has seen many unapproved part issues with several major airlines. The FAA began requiring more documentation for aircraft parts in the 1990s, but the problem persists. The accident pilot was aware that the engine had issues. Before the flight, the pilot told a CFI that he would perform an engine runup and take off only if the runup was successful. This accident involved pilot decision-making under uncertainty concerning whether to take off with an engine problem. This kind of issue happens at all levels of aviation. The fatal crash of an Alaska Airlines MD83 in 2000 is just another example. In this episode of the Aviation News Talk podcast, Max discusses the crash of N629AG, a Piper PA-46-350P Malibu Mirage, which occurred on a visual approach to Anderson, Indiana (KAID) on a Friday morning. The aircraft, arriving too high and fast, attempted a go-around but stalled shortly after, killing the pilot and three passengers. The flight had departed from Fort Dodge, Iowa (KFOD) under IFR, leveling off at FL210 before beginning its descent. The pilot likely lost situational awareness, as the aircraft descended too slowly to correct for the high altitude and fast speed on final approach. Despite having tools like the Garmin G1000, which could have alerted the pilot to the impending danger, the descent planning was inadequate. The episode emphasizes the importance of proper descent planning and the use of avionics tools to prevent accidents, especially in situations where an aircraft is too high and fast for a safe landing. Max also highlights the potential distractions in the cockpit that could lead to a failure in maintaining critical airspeed during such a high-pressure situation. Send Me A Text Message I would love to know where you are listening to me from!!Hello again Fellow Golfists, In the episode I vented about a less than ideal golf experience that I had this past weeekend trying to play golf somewhere that had a cooler climate. I took a risk and it didn't work out. I also had the chance to get out and practice at the Sacramento National at Haggin Oaks driving range where I had a breakthrough with regard to alignment and setup. And met up with a couple of older gentlemen who I met back in the winter. Rudy and Ray were delightful to chat with. Rudy Danzinger was the founder at Tower Records, which is a historic music store institution, that, to my knowledge started in Sacramento California. Also got to chat with an someone who had a eagle eye viewer account of the small airplane that crashed last weekend at the Haggin Oaks Blue and Red Nine clubhouse. Thanks to Augusto at Haggin Oaks for chatting with me about what he observed last sunday when the Piper PA 28 aircraft fell out of the sky and landed with no power against the Haggin Oaks clubhouse. Also got to visit Ancil Hoffman golf course and practiced more of my putting by "looking at the hole" where results were promising. And spoke about what it is like to finally understand a golf concept, that took 30 years to finally realize. Thanks again for listening to The Knackered Golfist Podcast. Send Me A Text Message I would love to know where you are listening to me from!!Hello again Fellow Golfists, A small airplane took off on Sunday afternoon August 4th 2024 from McClellan AFB / Airport and crash landed on the east side of the Sacramento National / Haggin Oaks Blue And Red Nine golf course pro shop and blue and red practice putting green. The Piper PA 28 Cherokee had an engine failure and the pilot had to make an emergency landing. Miraculously this crash landing did not cause any substantial injury to either the pilot, golfers, or golf course personnel on the ground. The practice putting green and the golf course clubhouse, originally built in 1932, sustained damage. In this episode I reflect on a plane crash that I observed first hand when I worked as a 2nd Assistant Superintendent at Cinnabar Hills Golf Club in San Jose California way back in 2002, and an incident with a piece of golf course equipment during my time at DeBell Golf Course in Burbank California. Here is a link to a newspaper article of a plane crash that happened on 3.7.02 at Cinnabar Hills Golf Club. https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/samaritan-pilot-feared-dead-plane-crash-on-san-2867721.phpThis story made it to Golf Digest, the El Segundo Times, KCRA Channel 3 News in Sacramento, KOVR Channel 13 News in Sacramento, and KXTL FOX 40 News in Sacramento. Missing equipment and inexperience led to a plane crash that killed 3. Precipitation, turbulence, and icing were factors in the crash of a Piper PA-30 Comanche in Oklahoma. The pilot did not have an instrument certification and was not able to handle the conditions. The pilot had a private pilot and multiengine rating but did not have instrument training. Todd Curtis, Miles O'Brien, and John Goglia discuss what may have driven the pilot to fly into deteriorating weather. “Getting there” seems to have been the focus rather than planning and preparation. The pilot was cruising at about 8,500 feet and climbed to as high as 16,500 feet. While the aircraft could provide supplemental oxygen, the equipment to use that system was not on board. The pilot likely climbed to escape a storm. He flew to an altitude where supplemental oxygen was required. The plane crashed and all 3 people on board were killed.Related Documents are available at the Flight Safety Detectives website. Injured by an Aircraft Fuselage Arose Out of Ownership of Aircraft Post 4727 A woman was severely injured while moving an inoperable airplane. She now seeks to recover from her husband's homeowner's insurance policy. The insurance policy excludes injuries "arising out of" the ownership, maintenance, use, loading or unloading of an aircraft. The policy further defines "aircraft" as "any conveyance used or designed for flight." In Lisa Thompson v. United Services Automobile Association and Matthew Mrzena, No. S-18462, Supreme Court of Alaska (January 26, 2024) the Supreme Court resolved the dispute over interpretation of the policy wording. FACTS Claiming that the policy should cover her injury because in her view the aircraft became mere "parts" after her husband removed the wings, elevators, and tail rudder. The superior court disagreed, concluding that the fuselage was still an "airplane" and that, in any event, her injuries arose from her husband's ownership of the aircraft. The court determined that her injuries were therefore not covered by the policy. Around 2011 Matthew Mrzena purchased a 1946 Piper PA-12 airplane (Piper). Mrzena stopped using the Piper in 2014 when it failed an annual inspection and was deemed no longer airworthy. Mrzena removed the wings, tail rudder, and elevators from the fuselage, leaving the remainder of the fuselage and many other parts intact, including the wheeled landing gear, propeller, seats, windows, and engine. Mrzena kept the Piper in a plastic temporary garage at his home in Palmer, Alaska. In 2019, Mrzena purchased a new residence where he planned to live with his now-wife Lisa Thompson. During the summer Thompson and Mrzena were in the process of moving their belongings, including the Piper, to the new home. As part of the move the Piper needed to be pushed out of the garage and onto a trailer. Mrzena was pushing from the back of the Piper, with Thompson at the front, when Thompson became pinned under the Piper's nose. Thompson's resulting injuries were severe. At the time of the injury Mrzena had the Piper registered as an aircraft with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). He also held an aircraft owner-specific liability policy on the Piper with Avemco Insurance Company (Avemco). Throughout his ownership of the Piper, Mrzena continued to renew both the Piper's FAA registration and the Avemco aircraft policy. DISCUSSION Interpreting USAA's aircraft exclusion pursuant to the reasonable expectations of the lay insured, the Supreme Court concluded that the policy's exclusion of coverage for injuries arising out of the ownership or maintenance of an aircraft applies to exclude coverage for Thompson's injuries. The USAA policy broadly excludes coverage for bodily injury "arising out of" ownership and maintenance of an aircraft. This language supports the reasonable expectation that Thompson's injuries would not be covered because Mrzena and Thompson's movement of the fuselage, and her resulting injuries, "ar[ose] out of" Mrzena's ownership and maintenance of the Piper. Reasonable plane owners would not expect that their planes cease to be aircraft solely because the aircraft had been partially disassembled to perform maintenance. . ZALMA OPINION Common sense exists in the Alaska Supreme Court. An aircraft under repair is still an aircraft even if it cannot fly. The Plaintiff was injured while she an her husband were moving the aircraft to a new home where the intended repairs could continue. Therefore, the Plaintiff and her husband were involved in the ownership, maintenance use of an aircraft and the exclusion applies. (c) 2024 Barry Zalma & ClaimSchool, Inc. In this episode of Air Traffic Out Of Control, a Piper PA-28-236 aircraft (N51SW) takes off from JFK and almost immediately after take off, the cabin fills with smoke and the aircraft loses all engine power. The pilot, in a panic, radios the tower and asks to return immediately. Given the urgency, he doesn't have time to go around and make a proper approach, so he requests a landing in the opposite direction on the runway. The tower has no choice but to quickly get other aircraft to vacate the runway to allow the Piper to land. You will hear how shaken the pilot is after safely executing the emergency landing. The news about the deaths of two Meadowcreek High School students this week has left the school's community reeling as it mourns the teens. First came the news that the remains found off State Route 316 this week belonged to Susana Morales, 16, who had been missing since last summer. Then came the news that another student who had recently gone missing, Rodrigo Floriano Mayen, 17, was recently found dead from an overdose. Police said on Friday that the deaths are not related to one another. The deaths prompted Meadowcreek Principal Kevin Wood to send a letter to parents on Thursday. According to Gwinnett's local health department, GNR Public Health, the Georgia 9-1-1 Medical Amnesty Act is designed to encourage people to seek help in the event of an overdose by providing “limited immunity from arrest, charge and prosecution for possession of certain drugs and drug paraphernalia for individuals who experience a drug overdose and are in need of medical care and for those who seek medical care in good faith for a person experiencing an overdose.” Wood told Meadowcreek parents that counselors and social workers are being made available to students and staff members who need to talk to someone as they grieve the deaths of Morales and Mayen. Duluth police have arrested a man, who has been described as a “witch doctor,” on charges that he allegedly raped a woman who went to him for a cleansing ritual last weekend. Hassan Shalgheen, 44, met the victim through social media and set up a meeting for a cleansing at his apartment. On February 5, the victim contacted police, however, and told them that, rather than receiving a cleansing, she had been assaulted instead. Shalgheen was arrested on February 6 and booked into the Gwinnett County Jail. He has been charged with rape, sexual battery, false imprisonment and theft by deception. Police are now looking to see if there are other women who have also been victims. Anyone who has been a victim, or has additional information about the case, is asked to call the detective handling the case. In commemorating National School Counseling Week, Gwinnett County Public Schools held an awards program on Feb. 7 to recognize its top counseling award winners for 2023. Those honored included Dr. Natalie Pugh of Gwin Oaks Elementary School, Jameela Hall of Lilburn Middle School and Dr. Cedric Cooks of Norcross High School. In addition, Dr. Eric Davidson, principal at Duluth High School was recognized as the Mary Joe Hannaford Counselor Administrator of the Year Award. At the awards program, the school district also honored Duluth High School as a 2022 Recognized ASCA Model Program recipient. There are 34 counseling departments in the school system that are recipients of the RAMP National Award, which is awarded by the American School Counselor Association and recognizes schools that have established comprehensive data-driven counseling programs. This marks the second time Duluth High School has received RAMP recognition. A list of those honored can be found at Gwinnett Daily Post dot com. Gov. Brian Kemp announced on Wednesday that he has picked two members of Gwinnett County's legislative delegation to serve on a joint committee that provides legislative oversight for MARTA. State Senator Gloria Butler of Stone Mountain, and Representative Scott Hilton of Peachtree Corners, were among six legislators that Kemp appointed to the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Overview Committee, also known as MARTOC. While MARTA has its own board of directors, made up of members from counties that participate in the transit system, MARTOC is a joint House and Senate committee that serves a statutory role to provide oversight for MARTA, particularly in budgetary matters. Although Hilton and Butler do represent districts that include parts of Gwinnett, their districts also include portions of counties which participate in MARTA. In Hilton's case, that is a portion of Fulton County. In Butler's case, it is a part of DeKalb County. For more information please visit Duluth GA dot net. A plane that was damaged as it was forced to make an emergency landing on Interstate 985 last month did so because it had lost all power on its way back to Briscoe Field in Lawrenceville, according to report from federal investigators. The National Transportation Safety Board's preliminary report into the Jan. 24 incident near Buford and Sugar Hill shows the Piper PA-28-140 airplane had been on a instructional flight when it experienced trouble. It's landing on the interstate shut down I-985 for hours during rush hour traffic. The instructor was able to confirm that the plane's throttle was full forward and that its fuel air mixture was full rich after the plane lost power, but they were too far out from Briscoe Field, where they had taken off from, to make it back safely. The plane was damaged during the attempted emergency landing. It clipped a truck before landing and the landing gear under the nose collapsed during the landing as well. There was other damage that was also listed in the report. Despite the damage to the plane, the flight instructor and the student pilot were not injured during the landing. Episode 134 Poor decision-making by the pilot is showcased in the examination of a Piper PA-24 crash in Angel Fire, New Mexico. The Flight Safety Detectives find that the NTSB report of this air crash provides helpful information and findings that every pilot can learn from. Greg, John and Todd review the facts, conditions and circumstances of the accident to amplify the role of the pilot's decisions before and during the flight. A lack of preparation led to this crash and two fatalities. The pilot was not prepared for the gusty winds present at takeoff. He was also not familiar with the high-density altitude conditions common during hot weather at this airport. Todd estimates the pilot had about 45 seconds between realizing something was wrong and hitting the ground. This week in airplane news: The NTSB has issued a surprisingly short final report for the redbull plane swap, the prelim report is out for the CASA Skydiving accident, airplane parts fall from the sky, and another highway landing. The NTSB has issued a remarkably short analysis and probable cause of the Redbull plane crash Probable Cause: “The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be: The unoccupied airplanes exceedance of the critical angle of attack which resulted in a stall, subsequent inverted spin, and impact with terrain.” WPR22LA165 https://data.ntsb.gov/carol-main-public/basic-search The NTSB Prelim report has come out for the strange occurrence of the co-pilot falling out of the plane The report states the copilot may have gotten sick, was visible upset, and lowered the rear ramp of the aircraft The PIC then stated the SIC removed his headset, apologized, and departed the aircraft via the aft ramp door - without a parachute. ERA22LA348 https://data.ntsb.gov/carol-main-public/basic-search According to the department of public safety in Maine, a 6-7lb metal sleeve-like object landed near a Capitol Police Officer. No one was injured and multiple people saw it happen The FAA believes the part came from a wing flap of a large passenger jet. Nearby aircraft were notified and all landed safely. https://abcnews.go.com/Weird/wireStory/airplane-part-falls-sky-hits-man-maine-88415457 Another highway landing has occurred and luckily all 5 people involved were uninjured. A Piper PA-32 landed on Route 91 in California, striking a Toyota pickup truck. The two people in the plane were able to get out prior to a post-crash fire and there were no injuries in the pickup truck. https://www.avweb.com/aviation-news/yet-another-highway-landing-this-time-alls-well-that-ends-well
This week in airplane news: A bill has been introduced in Congress to raise the retirement age of pilots, a congressional committee will hold a hearing on 100LL avgas, a plane crash near lifeguard training, CAE & Piper have partnered to develop an Archer electric conversion kit, and JetBlue will be buying Spirit airlines after a months-long battle with Frontier. Two bills introduced in congress would raise the airline retirement age from 65 to 67. These bills seek to reduce the pilot shortage, and this would be another increase in pilot retirement age since it was changed in 2007. ALPA said, “This discussion is yet another attempt to distract the conversation from the real issue which is the failure of airlines to deliver on a key goal of the multibillion-dollar relief plan Congress provided them during the pandemic which was to effectively manage air-service operations as travel resumes. ALPA strongly opposes this proposed legislation as there is no reason to change the retirement age today and doing so would only increase costs for airlines as well as introduce unnecessary risks to passengers and crew alike.” https://www.avweb.com/aviation-news/congressional-bills-would-raise-airline-retirement-age-to-67 Congressional Committee is going to hold a hearing called “Toxic Air: How Leaded Aviation Fuel is Poisoning America's Children” This committee is looking to ban 100LL It is expected that the EPA will issue a finding on leaded avgas next year https://www.avweb.com/aviation-news/congressional-committee-looking-at-national-100ll-ban An airplane crashed in Huntington Beach California this week during a lifeguard competition This competition quickly turned into a real rescue. The crash happened in between events and the veteran lifeguards quickly swarmed the wreck. The pilot was taken to the hospital with bruises but was otherwise unharmed. https://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/plane-crashes-lifeguarding-competition-pilot-rescued-87269378 CAE announced that they are working with Piper Aircraft to develop an Electric Propulsion Conversion Kit for the Piper PA-28-181 Archer. The development of this technology is a first for CAE,” said CAE President and CEO Marc Parent. “As an engineering powerhouse and one of the largest Piper Archer operators, CAE is uniquely positioned to make the electric-powered flight a reality at our flight schools and beyond. CAE's partnership with the Government of Canada and the Government of Quebec for investment into R&D has enabled us to boldly look to the future and prepare our electric aircraft for take-off.” https://www.avweb.com/air-shows-events/farnborough/cae-piper-to-develop-archer-electric-conversion-kit/ JetBlue will buy Spirit for 3.8 billion after a months-long battle between JetBlue and Frontier. This merger will create the 5th largest airline in the country The deal must be approved by regulators and will be the largest deal since Alaska Airlines beat out JetBlue for Virgin America. “We have two priorities: one is to get this deal closed and get the airline integrated and build a bigger JetBlue,” JetBlue CEO Robin Hayes said in an interview Thursday. “Secondly to run a reliable operation in the meantime.” https://www.cnbc.com/2022/07/28/jetblue-airways-reaches-deal-to-buy-spirit-airlines.html

This week in airplane news: Regional Carrier Piedmont pilots get a big raise, double-decker airline seats still in development, Foreflight sentry plus, and a mystery aircraft that violated 7 airspaces in Europe Piedmont Airlines has reached a deal to give pilots raises. A one-year First Officer will have a base salary of $60 an hour with a total bonus rate of $90/hour A four-year captain will go from $157 an hour to $161 an hour Piedmont hopes to retain pilots with this massive raise plan. “With the supportability premium, our pilot wages will be 50-70% higher (57% on average) than the next highest-paid regional carrier, Endeavor,” a joint letter from the company and ALPA to the 700 pilots said. “Including all bonuses, a new hire pilot should expect to make 31% more than pilots at Endeavor and 10% more than pilots at leading ultra-low-cost carriers (ULCCs) over the first five years.” https://www.avweb.com/aviation-news/piedmont-pilots-get-hefty-raise A design we talked about last year is making a comeback - the double-decker airline seats This design removes overhead bins and staggers passengers to fit more inside of the airplane The creator, Alejandro Núñez Vicente, has put his degree on hold while he pursues the creation of the seats. https://www.ctvnews.ca/lifestyle/here-s-what-it-might-be-like-to-travel-on-a-double-decker-airplane-seat-1.5945854 Foreflight has released the Sentry Plus, an ADS-B IN receiver This is a flight data recorder with a g-load, automatic power settings, an 18 hour battery life, carbon monoxide detector, and FLARM (European ADSB) The Sentry will retail for $799 and was developed in collaboration with uAvionix. https://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/general-aviation/2022-06-13/foreflight-releases-sentry-plus-ads-b-receiver A mystery aircraft flew over several European countries. Taking off from Lithuania, The Piper PA-23-250 Aztec flew south, through Poland, Slovakia, and into Hungary where the plane landed for fuel After landing without permission, people in the airplane got into an argument with airport workers, who called the police When police were seen approaching, the people got back into the airplane and took off, resulting in the scrambling of two SAAB Gripen fighter jets The pair of Gripen then intercepted the Piper, but the piper kept going, ignoring the fighters The aircraft continued south, into Romanian Airspace. Due to defense treaties, the Hungarian Gripen were allowed to continue following the rogue piper Eventually, two US F-16s took over monitoring the aircraft until it crossed into Serbia. Overflight of Serbia lasted only a few minutes and the aircraft crossed back into Romania, before entering Bulgaria. The mystery aircraft landed in Bulgaria, covered the airplane, and left it. Bulgarian Authorities found the aircraft while the engines were still warm. https://mentourpilot.com/mystery-aircraft-flies-illegally-over-seven-countries/
On 9 June in 2006, a Piper PA-44-180 Seminole aircraft, registered VH-CZE, departed Santa Barbara California for Hilo, Hawaii. During the flight, the pilot in command advised US Air Traffic Services that the left engine had failed and that the aircraft would have to be ditched as the aircraft was 7 hrs from Hilo but only had 5 hrs of fuel endurance remaining. At about 0145 UTC, the aircraft ditched 980 km north-east of Hilo. In our last episode (Episode 27) of The NATCA Podcast, we brought you the story of Fort Worth Center (ZFW) air traffic controllers and NATCA members Brian Cox, Larry Bell, and Colin McKinnon. The trio worked together as a team to help pilot and flight instructor Anise Shapiro and her student, Jouni Uusitalo when the engine failed on his Piper PA-46 Malibu halfway into a 75-minute flight over West Texas. For their efforts, the controllers are being honored this year with the NATCA Archie League Medal of Safety Award for the Southwest Region. Now, we bring you part two of this event - a conversation with Shapiro. She describes what the experience was like and how she and Uusitalo and the six dogs they were transporting all escaped unharmed after landing safely in a wheat field. Shapiro has been flying since 1997. This was her first engine failure, something she trains for regularly with her students. Shapiro said she could feel the ZFW team behind her, having her back. “Knowing that you're not alone actually is more helpful as a pilot than anything,” she said. “They stayed super calm. The calmer each transmission was, the calmer I felt.”
Halfway into a nearly 75-minute flight last spring to Graham Municipal Airport (RPH), 80 miles northwest of Fort Worth, Texas, pilot and flight instructor Anise Shapiro, in a Piper PA-46 Malibu, lost the engine for the first time in her 23 years of flying. At 14,500 feet and needing quick options, she declared an emergency to Fort Worth Center (ZFW) NATCA member Brian Cox. Onboard with Shapiro were her student pilot, Jouni Uusitalo, and six dogs they were transporting. With the vast West Texas terrain beneath her and losing altitude steadily in a strong headwind, Cox and fellow ZFW members Larry Bell and Colin McKinnon worked quickly as a team to assist her. Unable to make either Plan B, Harrison Field of Knox City Airport (F75), or Plan C, Texas State Highway 114, Shapiro and Uusitalo spotted a final option: An open wheat field with no trees or cattle. For their efforts, Cox, Bell, and McKinnon have been named the recipients of the NATCA Southwest Region Archie League Medal of Safety Award.

Chandra Beckman is part of the elite group of women who have flown the United States Air Force fighter jets. As a young girl, she was captivated by the fast-paced and driven environment of an Air Force career and sought to overcome the social barriers that presented it as a man’s world. Never one to back down from a challenge, Chandra succeeded in her goal and has flown T-37, T-38, F-15C, F-117A, and T-6A military aircraft, as well as the Piper PA-28 Cherokee, Cessna 172, and Beechcraft Sierra C-24-R civilian aircraft in her personal time. How a fighter pilot had to dismiss the medical system to save her life! After 8 years in the Air Force, Chandra’s health inexplicably began to deteriorate. Suffering from fatigue, food intolerances, weight loss and many more slowly emerging symptoms, she sought medical help, only to be advised that her symptoms were psychosomatic. Years of fighting for medical care that didn’t brush off her symptoms, or negate her illness, resulted in Chandra retiring from the Air Force so that she could seek medical help from outwith the institution, in a bid to discover what was causing her plight. Now fighting to save her life, as neurological symptoms were setting in, Chandra embarked on a journey into Holistic Healthcare, researching all possibilities. In today’s episode, she shares her journey with us, as well as the diagnosis she finally received, and her ideas on how to treat this life-threatening illness. Press play to find out what that diagnosis was and how dismissing the mainstream medical system finally saved Chandra Beckman’s life. Where can people discover more about Chandra? Each case is different and you should seek an attorney in your own state who can advise you for your particular situation. News Poway approves first-of-its-kind drone law The Poway, California City Council voted to ban drones from flying over most of the city. What started out as an attempt to address concerns over drones interfering with firefighting efforts, grew in scope to cover 75% of the city. The mayor says, "This is not the perfect ordinance. We are not going to use this like a hammer, and say you can't play with your drone in your driveway. You won't see us enforce this unless we have a wildfire and someone is interfering with first responder efforts." As Drones Flood US Skies, States Are On A Legal Collision Course The growing patchwork of state and local laws and ordinances has commercial drone operators nervous, and with good reason. There are questions of jurisdiction to enact laws, overreaching laws that stifle innovation and commerce, and enforceability. Drone reports detailed This article from the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) says that 51% of the drone sightings reported by pilots to the FAA have come from California, Texas, Florida, New Jersey, and New York. Unconfirmed midair between Piper Apache and unidentified RPA (update) FAA Investigating Reported UAV Collision with Piper Twin A twin-engine Piper PA-23 Aztec was struck at 2,500 feet near Lewis University Airport (KLOT) in Illinois on August 27, 2015. The pilot says it was a UAV that damaged a horizontal stabilizer leading edge. Some reports say it was a bird strike. The FAA is investigating. FAA Releases Updated Model Aircraft Guidance The FAA published Advisory Circular No. 91-57A, Model Aircraft Operating Standards [PDF] to update the guidance from 1981 to reflect “current law governing hobby or recreational use of unmanned aircraft.” That previous guidance was written in 1981,
August 10, 2015 - Three mules, two brothers, and a Jack Russell terrier. Together they rattle 2000 miles from Missouri to the great American Northwest in a covered wagon. That isn't the setup for a Vaudeville joke, but there are plenty of laughs found on the ruts, roads and interstates. That's right, interstates. The trip doesn't take place before the Civil War, but in our time. We can go along for the ride from the comfort of our reading chairs thanks to author Rinker Buck's New York Times best-seller: The Oregon Trail: A New American Journey. It's the first such crossing in a century, which meant our unlikely group of pioneers had to reinvent the lost art of wagon travel along the way. Mr. Buck grew up on the family farm in historic Morristown, New Jersey, and attended Bowdoin College in Maine. His career in journalism earned him the Eugene S. Pulliam Journalism Writing Award and other accolades. In his 1997 book, Flight of Passage, he shared another adventure: Piloting a Piper PA-11 across the United States in 1966. Just 15 at the time, he became the youngest airmen ever to complete the trip. You can follow his continuing adventures by liking him at Facebook.com/RinkerBuck. In 1828, a 16-year-old boy appeared in Nuremberg, claiming that he'd spent his whole life alone in a dark cell. In the latest Futility Closet podcast we'll follow the short, sad life of Kaspar Hauser and ponder who he might have been. We'll also revisit the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus, encounter some self-landing planes, and puzzle over why a man would bury 15 luxury cars in the desert. For months I had been planning a dive trip at Cayman Brac, one of the Cayman Islands. My nonpilot “co-pilot” Lynn and I have gone on many dive trips in my Piper PA–32-260 Cherokee Six. (Please note that Lynn is a male. For some reason, my wife of 25 years won’t let me go on flying/diving trips with single females.)
