That is how Trump supporters would be feeling if Harris had won. Each side feared tyranny if the other side won, and neither can imagine how the other side could feel that. The work now is to reduce the chasm between these lived world views and for both sides to be vigilant and protect the rights we cherish.”Resources Mentioned in This EpisodeBook: To Stop a Tyrant by ChaleffBook: Intelligent Disobedience by ChaleffBook: The Courageous Follower by ChaleffAbout The International Leadership Association (ILA)The ILA was created in 1999 to bring together professionals interested in studying, practicing, and teaching leadership. With Donald Trump set to return to the White House for season 2 of his dystopian presidential freak show, Democrats and liberals like me are bracing for a potentially major blow to the democratic institutions and processes of the United States. Based on the past actions Trump has taken to expand and hold onto power, and also on promises he has made to further consolidate power and weaken or eliminate checks and balances against him, concerned citizens on the left, and also many on the right, see a tyrant in the making in Donald Trump. Can he be stopped before it's too late to save the American experiment? In this episode, I talk with the person who can answer this question perhaps better than anyone. Ira Chaleff is an internationally recognized expert on leadership and political followership studies, a field in which he's considered a pioneer. He has spent decades working in and around Washington in nonpartisan organizations, including over 20 years as director of the Congressional Management Foundation. Ira has led and participated in democracy-strengthening programs in Asia, West Africa, and Eastern Europe. His books The Courageous Follower: Standing Up to and for Our Leaders, and Intelligent Disobedience: Doing Right When What You're Told to Do is Wrong, are used widely in leadership programs and have been translated into multiple languages.Ira Chaleff's latest book is To Stop a Tyrant: The Power of Political Followers to Make or Brake a Toxic Leader, and I am proud to be its publisher under the Wonderwell Press imprint. Ira is a political independent, and in this interview, he struck a much more balanced perspective than I personally hold (or even feel all that comfortable engaging with). But I learned a lot from him and could feel my blood pressure deescalating even as we spoke. Yes, we are at a risky point in our political history, but no, it's not too late to do something about that.In this episode, we explore the definitions of tyranny, autocracy, and toxic leadership, emphasizing the importance of political followers in shaping leadership behavior. Ira introduces the concept of proto-tyrants and the critical window for intervention before a leader consolidates power. Our discussion also covers the types of followers—conformists, colluders, and courageous followers—and the dire consequences of inaction against tyranny. We also talked about the challenges posed by the current information ecosystem and the need for informed citizenry to safeguard democracy. Ira's book and message are for everyone, anywhere on the political spectrum. If you are alarmed or dismayed by the current state of our political climate and feeling powerless, listen in to learn how to effectively wield the power that you really do hold, not necessarily as a member of the opposition, but as a responsible and engaged follower. Historically, almost all democracies descend into tyranny. Ours doesn't have to.Learn more about the book, its author and publisher:To Stop a Tyrant (buy the book)Ira Chaleff (author website)Wonderwell PressMore about Selfish Gift host Maggie Langrick:https://maggielangrick.com/instagram.com/maggielangrick
When thinking about political leaders—those with influence over national or global issues—how often do we consider the role of their political followers? Could you or I say “no” to a toxic leader and courageously defy their commands? This consideration is critical. Leaders don't operate in isolation. They need political followers who support, amplify, and even challenge their actions. These checks and balances support strong, fair leadership and ensure the political process is just. To Stop a Tyrant is a book approved of by readers at both ends of the political spectrum as it is a non-partisan and evergreen topic. In my interview with Ira Chaleff, author of The Courageous Follower and Intelligent Disobedience: Doing Right When What You're Told to Do Is Wrong, we explored this multifaceted relationship as he explained how political followers have the power to support healthy leadership or enable authoritarianism. His fascinating perspective comes from a dedicated career of studying the dynamics of leadership and followership – specifically in political contexts. Together, we unpacked his insights on what he calls “Courageous Followership,” his perspectives on intelligently and ethically disobeying harmful instructions from a leader, and the roles of followers who have the power to combat undue influence. Former Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley says she wants Trump to win, but that's not going to happen if he keeps using race to attack Vice President Kamala Harris and complaining about crowd sizes at her rallies. Haley appeared on Fox News and said that what America sees is Harris inspiring hope and Trump dredging up the past. She'd like to see the Trump campaign focus more on Democratic policies instead of attacks that likely won't go anywhere and don't matter to voters, but is Haley asking Trump to be something he isn't?We will talk politics with legendary broadcaster Gil Gross. Frances spent the first 44 years of her life as a Jehovah's Witness. Since leaving, she has dedicated herself to counselling former members. As Frances says, authoritarian cults give members overwhelming and impossible responsibilities. They can also diminish the real responsibilities we should accept. After leaving a cult, it is important to reassess beliefs and responsibilities. While we take a vacation, we’re rebroadcasting a few of our favorite episodes from the archives of the earlier years of the show. This one was originally broadcast as episode 15. Enjoy! All of us are both leaders and followers. While we often focus on how to lead, author, speaker, workshop presenter and innovative thinker Ira Chaleff has focused his career on the beneficial use of power between those who are leading and those who are following in any given situation. Ira chatted with TalentGrow Show host, Halelly Azulay, about ways in which we can all become more courageous followers and why there are times when we should all choose the path of intelligent disobedience. Taken from the lexicon of guide dog training, Ira introduces the term Intelligent Disobedience to fit our model of leadership and followership in organizations, societies, and families. Based on his latest book of the same name, Ira talks about when we should feel the responsibility – even the obligation – to speak up and push back to those in power, because it is the right thing to do and it helps our leaders avoid big, possibly hurtful, mistakes. And Halelly and Ira discuss the important ways in which, as leaders, we can create the kinds of cultures that supports courageous followership. This episode will expand your view of leadership, courage, and living in a principled way and leave you deeply inspired. Ira Chaleff is the author of a very unusual book called Intelligent Disobedience; Doing Right When What You’re Told To Do Is Wrong. It was named the best leadership book of 2015 by the University of San Diego and has been featured in many publications including Fast Company and Forbes, as well as in the New York Times Educational Supplement. Ira is a frequent speaker and workshop presenter on Courageous Followership and transforming hierarchical relationships into powerful partnerships. Ira is also the founder and president of “Executive Coaching & Consulting Associates” and an adjunct faculty member at Georgetown University. What does a small business owner need to understand? You need to hope your employees say what is needed -- don't create an environment where they would be afraid to give you valuable insight. What are some strategies small business owners can use to launch a new product? Don't put out your new ideas too enthusiastically -- ask for feedback first and invite discussion. Are there other skills business owners need to master to reap the benefits of a 'culture of candor'? You have to master your body language -- learn to master how to get feedback and not seem defensive. Most influential lesson learned from a mentor "Slow the motion down and understand the situation." What should the leader/follower dynamic look like? Being a "follower" isn't a personality trait -- it's a role -- not everyone needs to be a leader all the time -- be able to pay both roles. How does 'intelligent disobedience' fit into being a parent? We put too much weight on obedience in childhood development -- we inadvertently contribute to a mindset where we believe he must do what authority says. What one strategy or “recipe” would compound into big wins for business owners? Focus on missions and values -- what are we here to do? How to exceed expectations and add the most value? An individual would come to understand their mission, value, and role -- and no longer needed orders. What strategy would you recommend new business owners focus on to best ensure success? Pay attention to cashflow -- don't take your eye off the ball Have exceptional customer service -- your customers won't let you know if they leave because of bad customer service Build a culture How best to connect with Ira: Website: www.irachaleff.com You can also find us here: ----- OnwardNation.com -----
Ira Chaleff’s Intelligent Disobedience: Doing Right When What You’re Told to Do Is Wrong: Torture at Abu Ghraib. Corporate fraud. Falsified records at Veterans Administration hospitals. Teachers pressured to feed test answers to students. These scandals could have been prevented if, early on, people had said ‘no’ to their higher-ups. In his timely book, Chaleff—one of Leadership Excellence magazine’s “100 Best Minds on Leadership”—uses dozens of vivid examples of historical events and everyday situations, and offers advice on judging whether intelligent disobedience is called for, how to effectively express opposition, and how to create a culture where, rather than “just following orders,” citizens are educated and encouraged to think about whether those orders make sense.
