We want leaders to do the right thing when tested, and we want and believe we will rise to the challenge when the moment presents itself. But the current way we learn how to act ethically in those critical moments doesn't always translate or cause us to think we can do it effectively and confidently. Why not? How can we better prepare ourselves and our leaders when the moment arises? This is that episode. Giving Voice to Values (GVV) is an innovative approach to values-driven leadership development in business education and the workplace. Drawing on actual experience and scholarship, GVV fills a long-standing critical gap in the development of values-centered leaders. It's not about persuading people to be more ethical. Rather GVV starts from the premise that most of us already want to act on our values, but that we also want to feel that we have a reasonable chance of doing so effectively and successfully. In this episode we'll explore how to raise those odds.***ABOUT OUR GUEST:Mary C. Gentile, PhD, is Creator and Director of Giving Voice to Values (www.GivingVoiceToValuesTheBook.com), launched with The Aspen Institute and Yale School of Management and hosted at Babson College for 6 years, now based at UVA-Darden. In the impact space, there is often pressure to work for free or support every cause. You can easily find yourself having to make tough decisions about which projects to take on. Our guest, Rebekah Miel of Miel Creative, will share practical tips pulling from years of experience about how she has managed these experiences, lessons she has learned the hard way, what she learned about how to avoid the overwhelm, and how to make decisions that still align with your values. “In my younger years, I aspired to changing the world. Then reality kicked in, and I settled for 500 square feet.” - Betty Soskin, 102 year old, retired park rangerIn their career, Rebekah Miel has had the good fortune of being able to travel around the globe to hear the stories of frontline community members impacted by everything from climate change to natural disasters to harmful industry. As an empath and an impact-focused entrepreneur, it can be overwhelming. There are too many directions to go in. While it is a noble pursuit to want to change the world, it's important to recognize that making an impact often starts with small, intentional acts close to home. Rebekah notes: "The question I find myself asking over and over is: how can I create change in my industry while staying true to my values? It's not about the size of the impact I make, but the depth and authenticity of it. A common mistake I see is the belief that impact has to be massive to be meaningful. This often leads to burnout or a sense of inadequacy when the reality doesn't meet the ideal. What I want people to understand is that focusing on smaller, manageable projects can often lead to more sustainable and genuine impact. True change is a collective effort, and sometimes the best thing we can do is inspire and empower others to take action alongside us. Other times the best thing is simply show up and listen." Rebekah Miel is that lone pair of headlights driving in the opposite direction during a hurricane evacuation. You'll no longer find her sweating through a Tyvek suit in the lower 9th or eating curry in a refugee camp in Unawatuna, but that doesn't mean she is any less risk-averse. These days she's balancing the death-defying feat of raising pre-teen twins with the act of listening hard for how to be a good citizen in her adopted hometown of Durham, NC. Her current job title is Creative Director of her own creative shop, Miel Creative where she helps make beautiful sense out of a complex world for B corps, non-profits, and other purpose driven organizations. https://mielcreative.com/https://www.linkedin.com/in/rebekahmiel/:#BCorp #BeTheChange #BeautifulSense #TheHardSkills #OrganizationalImpactTune in for this empowering conversation at TalkRadio.nyc

What do you do when you are part of a marginalized group trying to make a greater impact but your own community is imploding? In this episode, we unpack when it's toxic and when it's simply constructive feedback and how you can handle it. WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:How do we distinguish toxicity from supportive critical feedback? What can people from marginalized underrepresented communities who are passionate about making a great impact do to avoid or address this situation in an empowering way? Is it possible to turn this into an empowering experience? Currently, Dr. Case's research focuses on the systemic impact of workplace cultural mismatch on how social justice academics navigate job demands with particular attention to health, performance, and retention outcomes. This episode will be part celebration, part reflection, and part insight. We will be celebrating what we learned from 1 year of hosting a live radio show and podcast, looking back at some of the highlights, and also sharing specific data on a group coaching program that follows the framework that our seasons have been focusing on this past year: Navigating Uncertainty, Developing Leadership Identity, Mapping a Strategy, Navigating Complexity, and Making a Greater Impact. What might be the impetus for starting a group coaching program within academic healthcare - what was the need identified and why group coaching?2. What can you expect to gain from such a program and what are the implications?3. What impact could this kind of program potentially serve in highly complex academic medicine and healthcare environments in supporting leaders in those environments. In work and life, many of us encounter groups with different norms, expectations, and beliefs. As we navigate the workplace, this flexibility can be helpful, except when it causes us to lose touch with our truer selves or deprives us of our deepest connections. We may be so responsive to others that we lose what makes us special. On the other hand, we may protect our identities so fiercely that we close ourselves off to the potentially positive influences of others. Based on personal and professional experience as psychologist in federal corrections, Dr. Lyn will help us learn how to identify and embrace our unique combination of life experience and world view and use them to connect with others, express our individuality, and manage seemingly conflicting roles. ABOUT THE EPISODE:Based on the experiences of a unlikely leader in federal corrections, listeners will be inspired to embrace the complexity of their identities and create ways to fit in, stand out, and make peace with seemingly conflicting roles in their own challenging work environments.***ABOUT OUR GUEST:Dr. Tamara S. Lyn offers unique insights into leadership after decades of service in federal corrections. Her fascinating career as a psychologist-leader culminated in the role of Warden, where she was one of very few women, and even fewer psychologists, in the position. She is the founder of High Ready Coaching and Consulting, supporting leaders in high-stakes, high-impact careers, including law enforcement, health care, and higher education. We often think about the many competing responsibilities that we have as leaders. But do we have to take responsibility for them all? Can we instead be responsive? In this episode you will learn the guiding principles of Responsive Leadership. This includes the seven core values and seven essential skills to approach leadership through a stance of being Responsive TO rather than taking Responsibility FOR in your work.We will discuss the ways in which many of the pressures of work are often framed from an assumption that we have to take responsibility for expectations that are placed on us, when we are more likely to be effective when we can be responsive to the expectations instead. We'll talk about the importance of Clarity Skills, which are tools to help leaders create Role Clarity, Systems Clarity, and Communication Clarity. Additionally, we'll spend some time talking about how Dr. Callandrillo came to create this model after working in an industry with high levels of stress and expectations from leaders, particularly middle managers.
