In an application heard in 2020, applicant Chandra Ellaurie sought an order from the Court to impose a ban on the calling to prayer or adhaan at Madrassah Taaleemuddeen Islamic Institute in Isipingo Beach, south of Durban. In Court, Judge Mngadi said Ellaurie was “unashamedly opposed to the Islamic faith” and rubbished claims that Islam was a “false religion.” The judge also dismissed a bid by Ellaurie to get the madrassah - which he said had turned Isipingo Beach, in South Durban, into “a Muslim enclave” – banned from the area. However, the judge found that Ellaurie had made a case against the calls to prayers made by the madrassah. “The proximity of [Ellaurie's] property to that of the Madrasah and the overwhelming evidence of the making of the call to prayer and the purpose thereof create probabilities that favour the [Ellaurie's] version that the call to prayer interferes with his private space,” he said. “[He] seeks to stop the interference with his private space. It could be argued that he moves away from the area, but in my view, this is extreme and does not constitute an alternative legal remedy. There is no other adequate alternative legal remedy available to [him].” But the madrassah says the case is, in fact, about religious intolerance and according to attorney, Ashraf Paruk, who spoke to Radio Islam International, saying that they sought leave to appeal against the order which was refused by Judge Mngadi.

The recent massacre in New Zealand has not only highlighted current antagonisms surrounding nationalism, immigration, Islam, Western identity, and race, but it also reaches far back to the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople, as identified in the shooter's manifesto. Sheikh Imran Hosein, author of over a dozen books mainly dealing with Islamic Eschatology, a field of study which he founded, is uniquely qualified to provide deep insight into all these phenomenon. This amazing conversation is incredibly wide-ranging and iconoclastic. We talk about New Zealand, Islam, Russia, China, the Ottomans, the Mughals, the US, Christianity, Hinduism and much more. It is an amazing, paradigm-shifting interview. Some of the specific issues discussed are:- his firing as Prinicpal of an Islamic Institute in Pakistan due to his refusal to declare Shi'a as non-Muslims- why he regards Sufism is the very heart of Islam, as opposed to literalism and fundamentalism- his opposition to sectarianism of all sorts - comparing the schisms between Eastern and Western Christianity, Catholicism and Protestantism, and Sunni and Shia - Understanding the rise of Russia in this context- his move from the study of International Relations and working in the Foreign Service to global Islamic Scholarship- his founding of Islamic Eschatology- how the Ottoman Empire sabotaged the relationship between Christianity and Islam, through oppression and aggression, and the desecration of the Hagia Sophia - How the New Zealand shooter is explicitly linked to this- Sheikh Hosein's admiration for those who defended Constantinople- why the Mughal rule over India was oppressive and how this sabotaged the relationship between Hinduism and Islam- why the Saudis do not represent Islam- China's role in history and the nature of its alliance with Russia- the madness of the present Turkish government in wanting to re-establish the oppressive Ottoman Empire- the Turkish role in overthrowing Gaddafi in Libya and supporting ISIS- why Trinidad (his homeland) has been one of the biggest exporters of ISIS fighters, on a per capita basis- the problem of "Protestant Islam" This is a profoundly important conversation that deserves the widest audience possible. Please like, share, rate, and review this episode and this podcast in general.

Watching TV — especially when it isn't, strictly speaking, on TV — has gotten complicated. It's not just “should I be staring at a screen for this many hours of the day?” or "I am having 'House of Cards' nightmares." It's that there are so many choices, content-related and otherwise. Sometimes it's hard to sort through them. We want to help you watch online TV better: better shows to watch, better ways to watch, and, to offer up a little guidance on the thorny questions of what to pay for. Hopefully, this week's podcast lightens the conscience of your inner couch potato. Our conversation with Ben Sinclair and Katja Blichfeld, the creators of "High Maintenance," points the way. They've chosen to put their show exclusively online in a bargain that bestows artistic freedom but leaves them kinda broke. We also talk to our friend, Arwa Gunja, otherwise known as "The Streamstress." One of the questions that came up: Is it OK to share log-in information with people outside of your household? If you're like 46 percent of HBO Go/Netflix/Hulu Plus/WatchESPN/Amazon Prime Instant Video watchers, you have too. The CEO of HBO Go may or may not care. There's a shaky, complicated, really, really big debate out there. After we wrapped the taping of our show craving even more certainty, we posed the question to a whole bunch of people who think about the bright lines of acceptable behavior — a priest, an imam, a Supreme Court justice (she very politely declined), and more... Matt Kilmer, Music Coordinator and composer for ‘Louie': "...If you live with two roommates, it's fine to have one account between you all, and likewise with family living under one roof. However, if you are sharing a password with your old best friend from high school who lives on the opposite coast as you, then that's crossing the line IMO...$7.99/mo isn't breaking the bank for anyone who owns a device capable of streaming from any of these services." Marci Auld Glass, pastor of Southminster Presbyterian Church in Boise, Idaho: "I personally share my Netflix and HBO account with my son who is at college. If any other family asked me, I would likely share with them too. I haven't had friends ask me, but I would be less likely to do that, I think... I am not sure I have an objection to sharing digital media. I purchase my digital music and video, and am happy to do so. I understand why companies would put limits on how many “devices” can be used by one account. They need to make money." Mitra Kaboli, senior producer of 'The Heart': "For the last few years, honestly more than I can remember, I've been using an old lover of mine's Netflix account... Ethically, I have no problem with this. It's such a small sum of money and I feel like Netflix acknowledges that accounts are shared so I don't feel any moral qualms. The larger issue was if he got a new credit card, so I could no longer continue my 'Orange is the New Black' binge... Sometimes I got paranoid that these were passive aggressive messages aimed at me. Although, I'm certain they are not. He shared that account with seven or so people."
