In this year's GateSlashers podcast special, hosts Dan and Ethan sit down to talk about IT, the two-part film adaption of Stephen King's iconic horror novel. Released in 2017, IT Chapter One, directed by Andy Muschietti, adapted one half of King's novel, focusing on a group of teen outcasts known as the Loser's Club as they encounter a malevolent entity known as Pennywise the Dancing Clown in their hometown of Derry, Maine. IT Chapter Two, released in 2019, again directed by Muschietti, finds the Loser's Club reuniting 27 years later to once again face-off with a returned Pennywise. On the podcast, we discuss our love of these films, how they are a shining example of studio horror, and true fear brought on by Pennywise. We also dive into the perfect casting across the board, from the young Loser's Club to their adult counterparts, and the sublimely terrifying performance by Bill Skarsgård as the titular IT, Pennywise.

Apparently this movie was first slated to come out more than four years ago?  Yup after several years of pre-productions stops and starts, COVID-related delays, a revolving door of talented directors joining the project, and....a lot of dicey criminal activity from its start not long after production completed, DC's stand-alone movie focused on one of its most beloved superheroes is FINALLY coming to the big screen!  Ezra Miller stars in the titular role of the Scarlett Speedster,  otherwise known as The Flash - his actual character's name is Barry Allen and he's embarking on a unique journey of attempting to change one tragic part of his past through the power of his speed......officially known as the "Speed Force." Of course he ends causing more damage than expected within a different time line...and chaos ensues.  Fortunately, Barry is able to enlist in getting help from an old friend, Bruce Wayne - although this is a different Bruce Wayne than he has known before, this time played by Michael Keaton!  Yes the same Michael Keaton who played Bruce Wayne/Batman in Batman from '89 and Batman Returns from '92.  Only this time, he's NOT being directed by Tim Burton - the director who finally took on the role of completing this epic saga is Andy Muschietti who recently gave us It: Chapter One and It: Chapter Two.  So after all the craziness which lead up to its release, did we actually get a GOOD movie in the end?  Only one way to find out....  Host: Geoff Gershon  Editors: Geoff and Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Topics covered in this episode include: why this Stephen King adaptation works as opposed to Children of the Corn, the pitch perfect casting for the Losers, the tendency of director Andy Muschietti to go HUGE with set pieces and imagery, Henry Bowers' truly scary mullet, and the infuriating fact that a lot of the best lines of the film were improvised by 12 year olds (seriously, these kids have NO RIGHT to be this good). We also critique the various changes from book to screen, and confess which one of us is, in real life, truly freaked out by clowns. We start a new series for the podcast, by talking about the original films versus the remakes or reboots. Do they work? Do they fail? This is the idea behind the new idea. And first up to debut this new creation is our chat about the IT movies. So let's take a look at what we'll be talking about. And if you enjoyed this idea, please offer suggestions for future episodes. --------------------------------------- IT (1990): In 1960, seven pre-teen outcasts fight an evil demon who poses as a child-killing clown. Thirty years later, they reunite to stop the demon once and for all when it returns to their hometown. This was also known as a TV Mini-Series. Separated into 2 Episodes for One Season. --------------------------------------- IT CHAPTER ONE (2017): In the summer of 1989, a group of bullied kids band together to destroy a shape-shifting monster, which disguises itself as a clown and preys on the children of Derry, their small Maine town. This was the remake from the original mini series, taking both parts and turning them into two separate films. --------------------------------------- IT CHAPTER TWO (2019): Twenty-seven years after their first encounter with the terrifying Pennywise, the Losers Club have grown up and moved away, until a devastating phone call brings them back. The second and final chapter of the new run. Which the original showed both "chapters". ---------------------------------------

Immediately IT CHAPTER TWO was announced to great hope and finally appeared at theaters in late summer 2019. Now adults, the “loser’s club” is called back to Derry, Maine by Mike, the only member to remain in town, when he discovers Pennywise, the evil clown, has returned. Soon more people go missing or are found dead, and the group is forced to return to their childhood haunts to find a way to kill a creature that seems impossible to kill. The film is once again helmed by Andy Muschietti. Screenwriter Gary Dauberman is back to personally write the script. Starring award winning actors James McAvoy and Jessica Chastain, and including a cast of up-and-comers, the movie was a hugh success even though its reviews (though good) were not as positive as the first. Dark Discussions takes a look at this new horror film based off Stephen King’s novel, IT (1985). A 2 Hrs. 50 Min. horror movie? Yes please! We revisit Derry, Maine 27 years later to see what our lovable group of Losers is up to. Director Andy Muschietti adapts the second half of Stephen King's It word-for-word in this epic horror masterpiece. Before floating into IT Chapter Two we give our thoughts and feels on the recently revisited IT Chapter One. Then we settle into the AMC Dolby Digital recliners for an eternity of thrills and chills. We also eat a giant movie theater pretzel. The movie stars Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, Bill Hader, Isaiah Mustafa, Jay Ryan, James Ransone, and Andy Bean as the adult versions of the Losers Club. Jaeden Martell, Sophia Lillis, Finn Wolfhard, Chosen Jacobs, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Jack Dylan Grazer, and Wyatt Oleff reprise their roles as the younger Losers, while Bill Skarsgard also returns as Pennywise the Dancing Clown.

This week Josiah and John are taking a trip to Derry to confront IT CHAPTER TWO. This adaptation of the lengthy Stephen King novel is eaqually lengthy, running 2 hours and 50 minutes. As a sequel to IT Chapter One, It is serviceable, but "it" does not reach the same horror heights. Full of quality jump scares and some excellent acting, pacing is the challenge for the filmmakers. We are joined by Alec in the car, and haunted by a security guard, as we give our immediate take on the film and then we take some time to put the film in context in "chapter two" of our podcast with just Josiah and John. Her friend Daniela however arrives to hang out with the two. While left alone she sneaks off. Finding keys to the artifact room and enters. When she begins touching things, she is unaware that she is disturbing evil presences. Soon ghosts appear and the three become endangered. ANNABELLE COMES HOME is the directorial debut of successful screenwriter Gary Dauberman. Having written or co-written such blockbusters IT CHAPTER ONE (2017) and ANNABELLE: CREATION (2017), his debut was highly anticipated. To download the rundown used during the It anatomy, click here: http://audio.afterbuzztv.com/media/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/MTN/It2017.pdf It (titled onscreen as It: Chapter One) is a 2017 American supernatural horror film directed by Andy Muschietti, based on the 1986 novel of the same name by Stephen King. The screenplay is by Chase Palmer, Cary Fukunaga and Gary Dauberman. It is intended to be the first installment in a planned duology. The film tells the story of seven children in Derry, Maine, who are terrorized by the eponymous being, only to face their own personal demons in the process. The novel was previously adapted into a 1990 miniseries. HELPFUL LINKS:

Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and William Thrasher talks about The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, the middle film in the popular live-action trilogy. Director Peter Jackson only covers two thirds of the novel here, keeping himself busy with juggling three different storylines involving humans, hobbits, orcs, and Ents. Fans at the time criticized Jackson for making a liberal adaptation of the book, but for many this is the best film in the trilogy. Although it takes a bit to find its footing, things get a grand pay off with the Battle of Helm's Deep towards the end of the flick.  Mat plays a brief clip from a live panel at Rose City Comic Con 2017 in Portland, Oregon in which he asks a question to Star Trek: The Next Generation actor John de Lancie. Thrasher feels mixed on Charlotte, a horror anthology film featuring a weird wraparound story about a woman being turned into a doll.
