While no longer the case as of a few months ago, legendary director Hayao Miyazaki's last film was to be 2013's The Wind Rises, a fictionalized biography of Japanese WWII engineer Jiro Horikoshi spliced with a wondrous Miyazaki manga, wrapped up in the classical Studio Ghibli bow with gorgeous animation and vibrant, memorable scenes. There's plenty of controversy surrounding the implications of celebrating the mind behind the most destructive Axis warplane in WWII - and the gang discusses this at length - but overall we think the film is a uniquely thought-provoking and emotional entry from Miyazaki, worth its spot in the Miyazaki/Ghibli pantheon in its own right. Krysta discusses a recent trip to see 'Jesus Christ, Superstar' at Starlight Theater as well as discusses some of her favorite extinct animals including the Dodo, the Sabretooth Tiger and the Thylacine! Then we settle into this week's topic with a broad strokes and very miniscule overview of World War II and after that we discuss three men who were stationed at different places in the Pacific in the early 1940's and none of these men returned home until the 70's. From the quiet hidden life of Shoichi Yokoi as he simply tried to survive in hiding, to the war of Hiroo Onoda who refused to surrender until his commanding officer came to the Phillipinse and ordered him to surrender, to Tetsuo Nakamura, a Taiwanese Indiginous person who served in a unit of 'Volunteers' until he was lost on the Island of Morotai where he lived in a hut he built in a small fenced in field for almost twenty years. We cover their lives in wartime and afterwards in this unforgivingly historical episode of the Family Plot Podcast! This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4670465/advertisement

Throughout Martin Dugard's life, running has been a consistent place he always returns. He's written for Outside, Sports Illustrated, and Runner's World about the world of running. He recently updated and rereleased his best selling book 'To Be A Runner'. Since his start as a writer, Martin has gone on to be a New York Times bestselling author writing books with Bill O'Reilly, James Patterson, and Mark Burnett. In today's episode we chat about his rereleased book, taking the risk to leave a corporate job to chase his dream of being a freelance writer, the process of writing, collaboration with others to write books, and his tips for those who want to take the risk and go 'all in' on chasing their dreams.TODAY'S EPISODE IS SPONSORED BY Penji - Use code 'JUMBLE' to get 15% off your first monthOpportunityInChina.comAbout MartinMr. Dugard is also the author of the critically lauded memoir To Be A Runner, a series of essays which takes the reader around the world as he recounts his personal journey through the world of distance running. It is a book about life itself, and how the simple act of stepping outside for a run is a metaphor for our daily desire to be the best possible version of ourselves, step by step. This attribute can be seen in the diversity and depth of Mr. Dugard's body of work. His writing and research into global exploration resulted in The Explorers (Simon and Schuster, 2013), an engaging narrative about the motivations for pursuing adventure — even at the risk of death. His ten years covering the Tour de France resulted in Chasing Lance (Little, Brown, 2005) a travelogue combining history, sports and gastronomy. Other works include the New York Times bestseller The Murder of King Tut (with James Patterson; Little, Brown, 2009); The Last Voyage of Columbus (Little, Brown, 2005), which tells the riveting tale of the legendary Admiral’s final, ill-fated journey in crisp, swashbuckling fashion; Into Africa: The Epic Adventures of Stanley and Livingstone (Doubleday, 2003), Farther Than Any Man: The Rise and Fall of Captain James Cook (Pocket Books, 2001), Knockdown(Pocket Books, 1999), and Surviving the Toughest Race on Earth(McGraw-Hill, 1998). In addition, Dugard lived on the island of Pulau Tiga during the filming of Survivor's inaugural season to write the bestselling Survivor with mega-producer Mark Burnett.Mr. Dugard is the writer and producer of A Warrior's Heart, starring Ashley Greene and Kellan Lutz, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2011.An adventurer himself, Dugard regularly immerses himself in his research to understand characters and their motivations better. To better understand Columbus he traveled through Spain, the Caribbean and Central America. For Tut he explored pharaohs' tombs in Egypt's Valley of the Kings. He followed Henry Morton Stanley’s path across Tanzania while researching Into Africa (managing to get thrown into an African prison in the process), and swam in the tiger shark-infested waters of Hawaii’s Kealakekua Bay to recreate Captain James Cook’s death for Farther Than Any Man. And for To Be A Runner, he ran with the bulls in Pamplona, suffered electric shock and hypothermia as part of Britain's Tough Guy competition, and explored Japanese WWII bunkers on the island of Saipan. On the more personal side of adventure, Dugard competed in the Raid Gauloises endurance race three times, and flew around the world at twice the speed of sound aboard an Air France Concorde. The time of 31 hours and 28 minutes set a world record for global circumnavigation. Dugard’s magazine writing has appeared in Esquire, Outside, Sports Illustrated, and GQ, among others. In 1997, Dugard was awarded the Dallas Area Press Club’s Katie Award for Best Magazine Sports Story.Mr. Dugard spends his afternoons as the Head Cross Country Coach at JSerra Catholic High School in San Juan Capistrano, California — a position he has held since 2005. His boys and girls squads regularly qualify for the California State Championships, and his girls team won the state title in 2010, 2011 and 2012. In addition, he serves on the Board of Directors of the USA Track & Field Foundation, charged with growing youth distance running in America. Martin Dugard and his wife live in Orange County, California. They have three sons.

The Japanese military of World War Two has a nasty reputation—kamikaze pilots, baby killers, and brain-washed, honor-obsessed soldiers who threw away their lives for a lost cause. Parts of this reputation is earned but much of the stereotype has come out of World War Two films. Depicting WWII Japan fairly in film and television while humanizing its people isn't easy, but Dan King is up to the job. King is a WWII Pacific war historian who reads, writes and speaks Japanese. After returning to the US he worked on several dozen movies and historical documentaries as a technical advisor, historical & language consultant and re-enactment coordinator. He was the assistant military advisor for Tom Cruise's The Last Samurai (he had a cameo as a German officer), a researcher for Clint Eastwood's Letters From Iwo Jima/Flags Of Our Fathers, and technical consultant for Nicolas Cage's Windtalkers. His passion for the subject of the war in the Pacific has also led him to seek out over 250 Japanese WWII veterans and personally interview 97 of them, in their own language. He has also been interviewed on several radio programs and has spoken to hundreds of people about Japanese aviation. Dan King was also employed by EA GAMES as the WWII Japanese technical consultant for the worldwide best selling "Medal of Honor" video game series. His basic task was to provide information to the game creators in order to make the game as accurate as possible. This included providing examples of Japanese WWII uniforms and gear; infantry weapons; tanks, large guns, ships and aircraft; Japanese language supervision during VO recording; and battle tactics and hand signals.   RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE Dan's Site Historical Consulting A Tomb Called Iwo Jima The Last Zero Fighter: Firsthand Accounts from WWII Japanese Naval Pilots TO HELP OUT THE SHOW Leave an honest review on iTunes.   Welcome to the Holbrook New Media Audio Feed. We do Audio, Video, Content Creation and That Other Stuff. holbrooknewmedia.com I'm Jeffrey K. Holbrook. Today we are going to do something a little different. Look for the usual episode of Geoff & Jeffrey: The Weekly Catch Up next week. Shortly after the death of my father-in-law, Hillard Hamilton, my wife was contacted by a guy we call Uncle Moe. He was in the army with my father-in-law during World War II. He ended up making a cassette tape for Dee, telling stories of the war, and also playing a resonator guitar and harmonica with songs they sang back then. It honestly has the feel of an old time radio show. He has quite a sense of humor, and can spin a great yarn. Please bear in the mind that this was recorded before political correctness was as big a deal as it is now. During the war, the U.S. government put out a lot of propaganda films and radio programs in which the enemies in the Pacific war were collectively called "The Japs". Many of the WWII generation were trained to call them that. While this could be considered offensive today, just remember that it is highly likely that Japanese WWII veterans are likely to call Americans a few choice names as well. If we sanitize history, we will never learn the lessons that history can teach us. We would never know how offensive these names could be if we simply eliminated mention of them. We would do well to remember that Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it. I for one would not want mankind to endure WWII, slavery, and so many other things that we now have learned lessons from. If we purge history of unpleasant things, our grandchildren will not believe it ever happened. A couple of notes: Uncle Moe always called Mr Hamilton, 'Hammy". Also, I hope you will forgive the audio quality, since it was recorded on an old style cassette recorder, and later digitized. Enjoy these tales from an old time storyteller. I give you Uncle Moe. -------------------------------- By the way, my wife Dee did eventually locate and get in touch with her half sister, and they have had the opportunity to meet and spend time together. It's a wonderful thing. Thanks for listening today. If you would like to receive notifications of new episodes go to holbrooknewmedia.com. Season 1, Episode 5 - This week, we chat about Session IPA and safely chug Beachwood BBQ Alpha Waves out of Long Beach, California, followed by Going in Blind! Then, Nagel’s non-beers: Sake and Cider.  We start off the show this week with a sessionable IPA from Beachwood BBQ, Alpha Waves then dive into non-beer homebrews from Nagel. Beachwood BBQ & Brewing – Alpha Waves Alpha Waves from Beachwood BBQ & Brewing in Long Beach, CA, is a described by the brewery as a “trickster of a ‘session IPA’ that will knock you down with surges of flavor and aroma.” “Session IPA” have been all the craze this year. Beachwood Brewing’s stands out from the rest in that it is a true session ale, clocking in at 3.8% ABV. It has a healthy malt backbone, and quite a big hop presence, even though it’s only 50 IBU. Feature: Homebrew – Greg‘s Homebrew Sake and Cider Greg’s Sake, named “Kamakazi Gang Bang” was an experiment to see how good a homebrew Sake can be. Much how Japanese WWII pilots would get tons of ass before their final flight, Nagel purchased a Sake kit from homebrewsake.com. Following the arduous broken English daily instructions,  the rice/koji was soaked overnight, baked, cooled quickly, then fed it to the yeast.  Every day, the amount doubles until the kit is finished. Once primary fermentation is complete, it’s racked into secondary, then tertiary after 30 days. After six months, it’s like fuel for a Japanese Zero, but mellows out over time with big vanilla, banana and stone fruit notes. Greg’s Sake in a Bottle of Mother Funker, with Dregs. We also sample Greg’s Cider, named “Cummin’s Cider,” that was ‘brewed’ easily from bringing a carboy up to Oak Glen’s Law’s Cider Mill. Step one: Sing The Sound of Music’s “The Hills Are Alive” while running through the apple orchards, dumping your sanitizer out of our carboy all over the ground. Next, add five crushed campden tabs to the carboy. Have the cider mill crush five gallons right into the carboy. Taste some to make sure it’s not gross. Pitch yeast after 24 hours (I used White Labs Old English Cider yeast). Add yeast nutrient twice daily while swirling and control temp to 68F. After primary, rack to secondary and wait 30 days. Improves considerably with age. Some people like to back-sweeten, which is gross. Save the trouble and buy the millions of sweet ciders available at the store. Feature: “Going In Blind…” We’re back for another round of “Going In Blind,” and this time, the beers were chosen and served up by Yvonne England. John wasn’t able to participate in the first round, since he “accidentally” saw the beer that was being served. Doh! Going In Blind, with Dale’s Pale Ale and Coconut Porter Ultimately, we find out that we’re drinking Dale’s Pale Ale from Oscar Blues, and Maui Brewing Co.’s Coconut Porter. We can’t stress how fun blind tasting is to do. Give it a try with your homies! Cheers, and we’ll see you next week!
