We are truly honored to welcome to Beyond the Mouse, Alan Menken. Alan's work has inspired millions. Having begun his career on Broadway, he and his writing partner Howard Ashman brought their talent to The Little Mermaid. That film is credited with saving Walt Disney Animation, and ushering a new era dubbed the Disney Renaissance. Alan has gone onto work on such Disney classics as Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Tangled, Enchanted and so many more. He has earned one Emmy, 11 Grammys, eight Oscars and one Tony. This makes him one of only 16 people to have earned an EGOT. Alan became a Disney Legend in 2001. "During the Vietnam war, the United States used a deadly chemical codenamed Agent Orange in a de-forestation campaign. The collateral damage of this has lasted for generations, but few people know about how the chemicals comprising Agent Orange were then used in the United States commercially to devastating consequences. This is the subject of the new documentary "The People vs. Agent Orange". Director Alan Adelson and documentary subject Carol Van Strum recently sat down with the Network's Jeremy Goeckner to discuss the film and the importance of speaking out even when all hope seems lost." The new documentary "A Most Beautiful Thing" is a tale that is very prescient in our current world. Director Mary Mazzio and subject Arshay Cooper took some time to sit down with the Network's Jeremy Goeckner to talk about making the film and the various messages it deals with. The film chronicles the first African American high school rowing team in the nation (made up of young men from the West Side of Chicago, many of whom were from rival gangs, all coming together to row in the same boat.) It's a time of transition at the Front Row Network. We've changed our name, we've added talent, and now we are restructuring in ways that are going to make you amazed! But to do it we need a little time to not produce the avalanche of content you've come to know us for. Jeremy Goeckner closes out our trip down memory lane as he recounts the very first ever episode of the podcast: Avengers: Age of Ultron. CLASSICS kicks off 2018 at the very tip-top of the movie mountain. In the 2 times the American Film Institute has made their list of the 100 greatest American films, "Citizen Kane" has topped the list both times. And even more, it is usually at the top of most all-time film lists. But why is that? It could be the savant Writer, Director, Producer, Star; it could be the ridiculously ahead-of-its-time cinematography and editing techniques. Or it could be all of these things. Buckle up because the Front Row Crew are diving deep on this one. This episode features Brandon Davis, Lou Hare and Jeremy Goeckner. It's been a short break for Classics as Brandon has been instrumental in participating in the redefining of the Front Row in recent weeks. And while he's also co-hosting the Zone-i-Sodes with Scott, he is now back at his first love of Classic cinema. This week, we thought we'd dip into the classic comedy realm because, well, we all could use it! So we dive into the world of cross-dressing musicians, bad Cary Grant impressions, Marilyn Monroe and mob killings as we break down what many call the best comedy of all time: 1959's "Some Like It Hot". We kick off our MonsterCast promotion month of October by doing another classic from the master of suspense of himself; Alfred Hitchcock. This go-round we take our first in-depth look at Cary Grant's work in the suspense and sardonically-filled masterpiece that is North By Northwest. Host Brandon Davis is joined by Jeremy Goeckner and Allison Means as they discuss the hilariousness of Cary Grant drunk, James Mason as the ultimate ass-hole voice and just how sexy was Eva Marie Saint in this movie?! Give it a listen and then see the film!
